any announcements as to when major hollywood studios/distributors would discontinue blu-ray releases?
There is no announcement about discontinuing Blu-ray. There are no plans to discontinue it, and there are no rumors that they will discontinue it.
The point is not that BD will disappear any time soon. The point is that it just didn't sell as well as expected.
but what media can store those HD files if not bluray? not everyone have reliable and fast internet speeds..
I think Steve Jobs decision to avoid bluray because they will have to partner up with Sony and it is not good for their ecosystem..but what do I know hehe..never owned an apple product
For now, the highest quality is on BD. Not everyone has a fast internet, but not everyone wants the highest quality either.
In my case, do I want the highest quality? Yes and no. If I really like the movie, I buy the BD. If I haven't seen the movie yet and I don't know whether I'm going to like it or not, I check it out on 720p, 800Mb digital media first.

Steve Jobs never liked physical media. When the Macbook Air came out, I thought it was weird that it didn't have any CD slot at all. Now it turns out that Steve Jobs was right. These days, it's weird for any laptop to still have a CD slot.
i just hope our internet speed catches up when bluray dies.
Don't worry ---
- BD will not die soon.
- New codecs will allow encodes to have smaller sizes yet higher quality.
- Combine that with improving internet speeds, and we might have BD-quality downloads in 3GB sizes in some years' time.
