Congrats to NU - they went against history ....... finally shedding that doormat label.

Speaking of "recruitment", here's a very truthful take from a PBA legend himself.

"Nothing beats having a padrino " - Atoy Co

http://www.spin.ph/basketball/news/nu-feu-uaap-season-77-finals-basketball-atoy-co-hans-sy-danny-ildefonso-support

The padrino teams have annual budgets which makes some PBA teams look like inter-baranggay clubs ...... everyone knows the deal and there's no investigative anything from the media or the authorities.

When NU gave an offer to Jeron Teng to play for them, dad Alvin sought the advise of my ex-PBA & UAAP coach friend ( kumpare nya kasi ).  The offer of NU was this :

P5M signing bonus
1 SUV of choice
1 Condo
P60K a month for Alvin
P60K a month for Wife
1 Franchise of Save More
1 international and local family travel per year all expenses paid
Plus monthly and bonuses for a star player

The signing bonus was later upped to P10M.

DLSU, however, matched the offer.  Plus complete liquidation of Alvin Teng's loans and payables.  And Jeron has a sure place in any San Miguel owned PBA team.  PLus of course the prestige of playing for DLSU compared to NU.

Whew. ( He's 5'8 at 13 and still growing )...

And lesser funded teams face the risk of "bentahan", "hulog" - game fixing.

from what i remember, there were reports that mvp was supposed to shift his support up after the ateneo graduation speech incident. but it was said that alumni wooed him back.

as for some schools who can offer much, i think all don't really offer much other than scholarship, and perhaps board and lodging. it's the alumni and other supporters who spend insane amounts of money.

In a very limited way.  Not as much as he supports Ateneo and San Beda.  He donated a bus to the UP team.  Dati raw kasi commute ang mga players going to the arena.

Extremely doubtful ...... the US NCAA has very strict rules regarding recruitment.

@mattia ...... Bro, you forgot to include that daddy Alvin Teng was given a coaching slot in Danding's ABL team. Hehe.

To be honest, this is all hearsay and really sounds too good to be true for me.  Also, when you say "the offer of NU" it makes it seem that the school itself is the one funding whatever this is, that this is drawn directly from the school's coffers.

Truth is, it is not.  The same can be said of DLSU or whichever school.

Ang maniwala sa sabi-sabi...

One doesnt even have to rely on hearsay ....... the mere fact that tycoons and businessmen and not the academe/school offcials, are doing the recruiting - it doesn't sound fishy or even slightly unethical to you?

Alvin Teng getting a job at an SMCorp ABL team right after Jeron gave his handshake to Danding, doesn't sound fishy to you ? ......... or the late great Bobby Parks Sr. being hired as NU athletic director at around the same time that Ray Parks was mulling his options.

How about Dindin Santiago and a few other UST belles, suddenly transferring to NU, even after coming off a championship season with UST.

If one doesn't know anything about Danding Cojuangco, other than him being a businessman, it would or should be unethical and illegal that he's doing the player recruiting, right? ...... but, history has taught us how Danding does business, right?

Millions of our farmer brothers and their dependents can answer this.  ;)

I have no doubt that old rich men are involved. And yes, I do think it is not ethical.

But that was not my point.

My point was that all that's enumerated below are hearsay.

The offer of NU was this :

P5M signing bonus
1 SUV of choice
1 Condo
P60K a month for Alvin
P60K a month for Wife
1 Franchise of Save More

Sounds really bogus, if you ask me.

You are correct, these numbers cannot be verified ...... though, IMO the specific numbers should't be important, since everyone knows that payoffs are happening.

Sen. Pia Cayetano's proposal for full disclosure of collegiate recruits benefits, allowances, etc is a small step in the right direction.

It's just unfortunate that the supposed bastions of truth and higher learning (some schools) choose to compete using unethical means by using patrons as their lead guys.

Without seeing the actual offer sheet, yes it's hearsay technically.  But as I've said my source was kumpare of Alvin Teng and ninong of Jeron Teng. He just shared to me what the Tengs told him when they asked for advice.  As to the veracity of the numbers, I don't know. Or both.

Yes sir.  Part of the DLSU package for Jeron.  To match that P60K a month offered by NU.  And a sure seat at any PBA team (SMB owned) when Teng graduates.

The idea is not only to compensate the star player but the family as well.

Over in the NCAA, San Beda makes its ninth consecutive Finals appearance.

San Beda vs Arellano Finals starting Monday at MOA.

As usual, San Beda is "llamado" but don't count out the Chiefs.  This is a good team that can very well match up with the Lions ;D

Yes, but that's SMB for you. Hahaha.

Iba naman yun case ni Pacquiao.  Would you really waste a draft pick on him?   ;D
