Anime OAVs on DVD.

I bought a Gundam Wing Operation 1... although the series is good. I got bored and lost interest in continuing the series.

I was satisfied in getting the Endless Waltz movie.

Blue Submarine No.6 also was pain...a 30 minute DVD :(
But the story and the animation are good. I may just have to wait untill all the series has been released...hopefully not more than 10.

DVDs I've regretted buying to some extent, and why:

JFK Special Edition Director's Cut - because it had no extra features at all. The fact that Warner saw fit to release this film -- one of the most densely info-packed movies of all time -- with no extras at all is a criminal move driven purely by desire for profit. In view of the recent release of the Oliver Stone Collection version (with some, not a lot, of extras but still better than what came before), I wasted money on the previous version. But sometimes it's so hard to wait 2-3 more years for a possible revised version.

Princess Bride - great movie, no extras. A revised version is rumored for release later this year or next, so looks like I'll be spending for this one all over again. Dang.

A Fish Called Wanda - Another great movie (#29 on the American Film Institute's top 100 funniest films) with a criminal lack of extras. The only special feature worth noting is the Wanda in the Aquarium screensaver.

Raising Arizona - Yet another wonderful film (#31 on AFI top 100 comedies) with no special features. Bleh.

Rules of Engagement - this is my personal cautionary tale to emphasize the truism: 'if you haven't seen the movie, don't buy the DVD.' Unfortunately I caved in to the hype and the great cast, and bought this without first watching it. It's a decent movie, but not something I'd really want to keep on DVD and watch over and over again. Anyone want to take this off my hands? Footnote: If Larry King says it's a great movie, take it with a grain of salt. Larry's no Roger Ebert.

The Untouchables - Yes, I bought the recent, feature-less release. Paramount is so inconsistent with its releases; sometimes they get it so right, such as with the feature-packed M:I-2, but most of the time they drop the ball as with this mini-classic 1987 Brian DePalma film.

Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan - another one of those feature-sparse Paramount releases. Sigh.

Mission Impossible - Paramount. No extras. Same sh*t, different disc.
It's always darkest just before it gets pitch black.

They're releasing another version of The Princess Bride? If that's true, then I guess I'll have to sell my copy now, while news of a new release isn't common knowledge yet.

DVD'S with worse picture quality than a vhs or vcd....
a great example of this is the highlander director's cut dvd
that was even thx approved, but when i watched it, it was annoyingly so grainy
that i stopped watching the movie, and i have not watched it since then.

Yeah! That Highlander DVD is a bit grainy. No wonder they sell it so cheap at Amazon. It does get a little bit better after a while though.  Being a fan of Highlander in general, of course I sat through it and listened to the commentary as well.

That's pretty much true for any Star Trek DVD, unfortunately. I'll still get this disc at one time or another because I'm a fan of this film and of Star Trek as a whole. I'm very excited about Star Trek The Movie DVD that's supposed to come out soon.

Hi Komikero, always nice to meet a fellow Trekker, though I must admit my interest in Trek has waned since I hit my 30's. I keep seeing in my head that Saturday Night Live skit with Bill Shatner at a Trek convention telling thirtysomething trekkies John Lovitz, Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon to "get a life." ;)

Does the lack of extras hold true even for the STNG movies (Generations, First Contact and Insurrection)? Not that I'm that interested in those sub-par movies, but maybe nice extras would make them worth buying.

Are you talking about the first Star Trek movie, 1979, the one with Stephen Collins and Persis Khambatta? No offense, but that 15-minute scene of the Enterprise entering V'Ger is a very effective cure for insomnia. ;) I much prefer the Nicholas Meyer Trek films, Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country.

Hey BENTLY -- I've been getting the same feedback from Madacy discs on Amazon's user reviews. However I did purchase the low-cost Madacy 5-pack Mysteries and Myths of the 20th Century. Since I'd already seen a few episodes of this series on the Discovery Channel, I knew what to expect. I am very happy with the set, especially at its price. Production value (of the show, not the DVDs) is superb, the writing is top-notch and the topics are well researched. A fine educational set both for mystery buffs and their children. ;)

As for the DVD quality -- you're right, the picture and transfer could have been better. But since this is a TV show put together entirely from stock footage, the video is already grainy and of low quality anyway. I recommend it.

gonz, yep, it's that 1979 Star Trek movie. The first one. Yeah, scenes did kind of drag huh?  But that's what bothered director Robert Wise about that film for years. He claimed that he never had a chance to come in and edit the movie properly because the studio wanted it out as fast as possible. With this DVD, he has the opportunity to cut it the way he originally wanted to. Let's see about that...

When I started buying DVDs, I was really into the big feature craze. I'd go for DVDs of movies I did't really like just because people and critics rated them highly for their extra features. To me, apparantly, great features won't make a good movie look good.

Now I buy DVDs based on how I liked the movie, even if its featureless (unless I feel that a feature-added version is on the way)

Yup. Once, I bought an R1-coded movie, BEST IN SHOW (by Christopher )
from OMI Video at P1450. Then a few days later, I saw an R3 version with the
same features selling at P700 at Astrovision Megamall. Darn! And the
movie wasn't that funny!

I agree, it wasn't as funny as 's previous efforts, Waiting for Guffman and especially This is Spinal Tap.  But I liked it all the same.  If you're a fan of subtle, elegant improv comedy, few do it better than , Eugene Levy, Michael Mckeon, Fred Willard and the rest of the former Second City TV cast.  Catherine O'Hara, Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock are excellent as well.

Anyway, getting back to the topic:  here is a partial list of DVDs I currently regret owning:

  • Space Cowboys
  • MTV 20 Box Set
  • Miss Congeniality
  • Nurse Betty
  • Princess Bride (because now there's a Special Edition with actual supplements)

DVDs I would regret owning if I didn't get them dirt cheap:

  • American Pie
  • The Blair Witch Project
  • Hollow Man
  • The Perfect Storm

Yup, I stand corrected, its PIRATED DVD's, its cheap, so what do you expect.  The quality for a while was good, and then it was mass produced, go figure.

Hey gonz, Catherine O'Hara was also part of Second City TV.

I liked Best in Show too, but I haven't seen the others.

DVDs I've regretted buying:

Air Force 1 Region 3:  no extra features.  This was before I wisened up to the differences between Region 1 and 3 releases and also to the DVDs locally released by VIVA.

The Mummy Ultimate Edition Region 3:  I already have a Mummy Widescreen Collector's Edition when I bought this.  I thought this was the same as the Region 1 release but unfortunately it lacked the pan-and-scan version (not that it is important to me, but I don't like being mislead.  Also, some of my friends prefer the pan-and-scan versions of films.)

The DVDs I regretted buying were the ones (LQPDVD) I bought from Xiamen,China.  Especially the newer titles like Evolution, Jurassic Park 3, Mummy Returns, Tomb Raider & Swordfish.  They were on par with pirated VCD copies (the worst kind) and with subtitles in Malaysian that can't be enabled.  Looked like it was taken from a theater and I was just waiting for a head to appear in front.  They were also on PAL and can only be played in my DVD-ROM which has a poorer video quality than my HT.  Haven't finished watching any of them.  Well for P70.00@ I got what I paid for. >:(

Hannibal!!

While the extras weren't bad, the movie was a total letdown (IMHO)... I thought it would be a mystery thriller like the first one, but it was actually more of a gore-fest/horro movie style... Watch it once and never touched it again...

Buti na lng R3 nabili ko... at least it nde ganun kasakit sa bulsa...  :P

i think this is one of the symptoms of being a DVD ADDICT! :-[

going back to the topic :)

i bought some hong kong anime dvd's
and was rather disappointed on the video and audio quality, like Spriggan's audio mix, all the signals where comming from my rear speakers...mahinang mahina ang center at front speakers. weird ???

the only upside in it, is that most of the hong kong anime release are unedited.
unlike the butchered US anime release >:(

I have a collection of 10 DVDs, and there is not a single regret nor was I disappointed or upset with anyone of my titles.

DVD is an expensive format, true, but it made me learn how to choose movies very carefully and I get big value for my money. Not only that, the money I paid for them went to the studios in Hollywood.

xage,

For the benefit of all of us, which R3 title was unsatisfactory for you?

as mentioned in a lot of places in this forum, majority of warner R3 dvds tend to have the same features as their R1 counterparts.

It is the intent of the moderators to promote interest and awareness about the improving quality of R3 discs. If you have problems regarding certain R3 titles, please feel free to post your thoughts in the Region 3 vs. Region 1.

It would be appreciated it you could go into detail as to why you're not satisfied with said title and not revert to the usual vague, shallow, disruptive and often off-topic one-liners that you've become known for.
