The American Idol Thread
« on: Jan 23, 2004 at 11:54 PM »
Just a quick bump and reminder that World Idol airs on Star World this Saturday at 9:00PM.

I saw the first three episodes of American Idol 3 this week. My previous exposure to this show was just the DVD highlights from the first season. I now understand why it's a big hit. It's not just a talent show. It's an ongoing reality show/drama for the aspirants.

Plus there's nothing funnier than seeing someone really really bad who thinks he or she is talented get a sudden shocking dose of reality, from the mouths of Simon and Randy.  ;D

I wonder which season Star World will be airing starting next month?

According to the February 2004 edition of Guide magazine, it is American Idol 3 they will be showing:

"America's favorite judges, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson return to lend their professional expertise, personal comments, and often unwanted criticism to this season's new crop of aspiring singers. Which auditioners will impress them and which will torture them? Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, find out who will follow in the footsteps of past winners Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard."

 8)

The hour-long performance shows will air on Thursdays at 8PM, while the half-hour results shows will air on Tuesdays at 8PM.

I'm not sure about how the initial few episodes will go, though, since these are all hour-long shows of the city-by-city auditions. Maybe Drew Carrey will be pre-empted for a while.

yay! i hope you're right. finally!

teka! may "guide" na? maaga sila this month ha! is it because 29 days lang ang Feb??!

BTW, it was interesting to watch the World Idol special on StarTV yesterday. wala kasing mga chargen. no numbers were flashed and wala yung names ng contestanst just before they sing.  ;)

also, did you watch the OT: Operacion Eurovision last week. looks like the franchise is expanding... may OT Turkey na! ha ha ha! last year's winner of the ESC (who is from turkey) was a guest.  (and i didn't realize  na 39 na pala sya... she doesn't look it.)  ;)

according to the starTV website naman... the first episode will be on february 5 at 9PM (118 mins), with the first results show on february 10 at 8PM (30 mins). the hour-long performance shows will then move to 8PM every thursday...   ;)

If what you posted is right, then it appears that we will be ON TIME (same week) with the regular elimination rounds of the show, but they will NOT show the funniest part - the six hour-long cross-country auditions.

Some of you are gonna be very lucky to have a friend who has copies of the first three auditions already, and is ready to get the next 3...  ;)

Whoops! I accidentally taped over my OT: Eurovision VHS this AM.  :-\

It's sort of funny to see her smile fall further with every country result read.  ::)

American Idol 3 is doing extremely well in the ratings this year. Here are the Nielsen Top Ten Television Shows for the past week:

1. American Idol, Fox (Wednesday) - 29.4 million viewers

2. American Idol, Fox (Monday) - 29 million viewers

3. American Idol, Fox (Tuesday) - 28.6 million viewers

4. Golden Globe Awards, NBC - 26.8 million viewers

5. Friends (8-8:30), NBC - 20.8 million viewers

6. CSI, CBS - 20.7 million viewers

7. Friends (8:30-9), NBC - 20.7 million viewers

8. My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé, Fox - 20.7 million viewers

9. CSI: Miami, CBS - 16.3 million viewers

10. 60 Minutes, CBS - 15.8 million viewers

Most people were expecting the debut episodes to drop off in the show's third season (as was the case with Survivor: Africa), but the ratings for this year's season openers were even better than for the first two seasons of the show.

Looks like a good time for Star World to bring it in.  :)

this is IT people... this morning saw the close the third edition of Operacion Triunfo España with it's "ultimo gala"... with it, Spain's representative to the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest was finally chosen.... RAMON!!! (thank heavens it wasn't vicente!)  and his "tema": PARA LLENARME DE TI.

ramon got a whopping 38% of the votes cast via sms and calls... he is followed followed by vicente (29%), miguel (18%) and finally, davinia (15%).

ummmm... a bit disappointed at how davinia fared. i definitely thought her song (a spanish tongue twister, i heard.) has some universal appeal. oh well... ganiyan talaga. i am personally happy naman with the choice.

i  was also pleasantly surprised that the teachers actually sang... something they haven't done since OT2's christmas special. (WOW! greta can really SING! she can give tina arena a run for her money! IMHO, nasapawan nya si nina... and that's not easy to do.)

oh yeah! i was cracking up hysterically when javian made that joke about geno and gisella's outfits: "mantel y cortina!"... ha ha ha!

Destiny never brought back RTP after their most recent channel lineup adjustment (since I think I was the only person in the country watching that channel, anyway...  ;D ), but apparently, Operacao also has its Eurovision contestant/song already:

It's Sofia, who will perform "Foi Magia" at Eurovision in Istanbul on May 15 (So far away... did I read the date right?):

She beat out the guy who was "Grade A" student for more than 50% of the episodes, Francisco:

This was a funny, funny show. I'm gonna miss it!

ha ha ha! yeah. i think Operacao Triunfo had it's Eurovision special last January 25. (and no... you're not the ONLY person who watches this show, ako rin... tho not as regularly as you. he he he.) i just kept forgetting to check who won... BTW, i thought there were 3 semi-finalists. what happened to the other guy gonçalo? also, is sofia "involved" with that guy? i got that impression kasi when i saw one of the galas. hmmmm.

di naman pala ganun kalayo ang voting ni gonçalo and francisco. (francisco actually placed DEAD LAST!!) here were the results for the 3 finalists of OT Portugal:

Francisco - Caminhos Singelos: 31,003 votes
Sofia - Foi Magia: 38,972 votes
Gonçalo - Novo e Clássico: 31,899 votes

in any case, i wish portugal all the luck! i hope sofia will be one of the 24 finalists. (spain is part of the magic 14, who will automatically get into the finals. the magic 14 are: germany, austria, belgium, spain france ireland, iceland, norway, poland, u.k. romania, russia, sweden and host country turkey. the last 10 will be decided by the semi-finals on may 12.)

and yeah... the eurovision will be on may 15, which will hopefully be aired by TVE Internacional LIVE!  ;)

this year's official eurovision logo.

Huh! From the weekly shows, I didn't think Gonçalo would even be in the running, and he even beat Francisco.

I'm guessing Francisco is the equivalent of "Lemar" - teachers'/judges' favorite so he was never in danger, and the public never had the chance to save him, so they didn't develop that bond with him.

Reminder naman when Eurovision is close already...?  ;D

yeah. minsan naman kasi nasa kanta rin eh. baka naman super pangit yung kanta na napunta kay franciso and medyo okay-okay yung kay gonçalo. (i'm guessing francisco was trying reeeeally bad to get the ladies' votes... he even took his shirt off... wotta cheapshot.)

reminder? sure. no problem. inis lang ako kasi mga march pa lalabas ang "mayo" schedule ng TVE.  :-\

So, what's the verdict? Was that funny or what?  ;D

On the annoying side... StarWorld CUT at least 10 minutes worth of footage from these first 2 episodes, including the actual audition songs of two of those that got in - Amy the redhead and the smiley African-American dude! Not sure what else is missing. I wonder why they did that?

Now I know why AI is a hit ---- it's fun watching people make a fool of themselves! ;D I actually had tears in my eyes from laughing real hard. This is better than any comedy series I've been watching lately.  I couldn't stop from laughing, sobra! I didn't watch the first hour, so I missed a lot, sayang. It's my first American Idol too, entertaining nga pala. ;D It felt like.....watching a local channel (as in my residential area's cable community channel, which is in Metro East, with no familiar personalities, and people singing/dancing on stage... giving the greatest performance of their life! ;D) and then laughing at them on tv. It's a very bad thing to do :-[ I know... pero sobrang laugh trip!

So the sched is:

Thurs at 8PM - hour long show
Tues at 8PM - 30 minutes result show

Correct?  I wanna get the scheds right, I think I don't wanna miss this show!

Edited to add:  As if magaling rin akong magperform...Heheheh! But really, some of the contestants do not have the right to even audition. Losers! Grabe, I still cannot stop laughing up to now.

That's the supposed schedule. But the way it's been running in the States, the first 7 episodes were ALL one hour long, and the 8th was I think 90 minutes.

Not sure how Star World will deal with that - whether they'll edit the shows down or pre-empt Drew Carrey on Tuesdays. Just check for 8-9 on Tuesdays until the contestants have been cut down to the final 32, which is when the "one hour performance show/half hour results show" format actually starts.

I love scooter girl! What a bio! The thing is though, I'm not quite sure if all that stuff really happened to her or if she just made it all up. Gymnast? Merit scholar? Anorexic? Re-parentee? Is she for real?

That Michael Keown guy was creepy-looking and sounding. And could he have picked a more boring song? If I really want to hear unchained melody all I need to do is call acidburn and ask to be put on hold.  :)

i think it's real (didya see her do the flips and handstands! that ain't easy.)... i mean why would they lie about something like that. the bottom line is this girl CAN sing! and i like her 'tude. and i think that's all that's important. i have to agree with randy though. she's really suited for the theater... but who knows she might turn out to be a good pop singer anyway.

the koewn guy looks a bit overconfident. when asked if he's any good he answered "yeah."... when i personally think he should have responded with a "you tell me if i am." i get the feeling he's studied singing under a teacher or a coach.

oh, and how about that "hunk" paula went gaga over! LOL. he surprised me that he can actually sing... but not that well... who knows??... he could be the next "ramon."

it's too bad that guys offshore will not have chance to vote when they start to show the top 10 finalist.
