got a Coral X-Vfive at pier for P4.5k cant find sa net..
But it looks like this..

http://page.freett.com/knisi/x-7.htm

the only differrence is that mine a 10" version..
so far very clean/detailed sounding
tried it with Sansui AU-907F, Carver M-500t, Scott 228B
Cd player Sony CDP-X33ES and CDP-555ESJ
and for me way better than those currently production speaker..

sir rascal101 also got a Pioneer s-77 twin SD for P5.5k
He choose between Diatone DS-77EX for P6k and this Pioneer..
but due to space kya pinili nya ung floorstander na Pioneer..
both speaker are still in their good condition specially the diatone
parang bago pa.. makinis wala pang repair ung mga drivers..

I also wanted to get this Diatone
kya lng dami ko ng surplus speakers..

cheers!

5.5k daw  >:( . sabi ko 4k  ::) . na get ko 4.5k  ;D

Gagawin kong subwoofer - 20hz ang abot eh - acoustic suspension pa/ accurate bass daw. may separate amp naman ako. Iniisip ko ngayon what to do with the MID/High speaker drivers!  ;D  ;D  ;D

Onkyo DX-77XG dapat kukunin ko, katabi nung diatone DS-77EX. 6.5k daw. dare ko sa 5k, bumibigay. Itinulog ko muna. Then I spotted SB-501 the next day. Sayang nga eh, 4k sana.  ;D  ;D  ;D

Also spotted Peerless/Japan 6-inch full range in unused beautiful vintage box, with complete plastic wrapping. 3-pairs. Got all for 1.2k. heard of 6.1 HT in high-sensitvity full-range compliments? heaven! :o  ;D

that full-range 6-inch Peerless could be worth over $25 each in mint condition. a friend bought a pair of Peerless tweeters recently in the US at about $40. as per Yahoo Japan auction records, current average used price for Onkyo DX-77XG is roughly 25,000 yen while Diatone DS-77EX is about 10,000 yen (the newer Diatone DS-77Z is in the same price bracket as Onkyo's DX-77XG.)

Sir, kung gusto kong sumikip sa bahay namin, kakanain ko rin yung onkyo eh! even not on the price, its metrics is outstanding. But the surround of the woofer have been replaced - how much effect would it have in its performance?

Is it possible to get decent speakers with a budget of just, say, 4K?

what is decent to you?

I have noted the diatone DS-32B (3k) and DS-181W (2.5k) to be competent, and you can haggle them for much lower price pa. There are a lot of 5k price point in pier which you can haggle down to 4k. In selecting, be sure to open your eyes and check the drivers carefully (sign of modified surrounds, dust cap, etc etc.) The DS series I noted above are very clean (read "unaltered")

My main speakers now much lower than 2k - diamond 8.1 alternate for some materials not appropriate for my main speakers.

There are a lot of shops at the pier, including the big ones that I personally know of, that do have busted drivers not just reconed but also rewound. By looking at the surround of the big drivers, check if the foam is very fresh. If it looks fairly new, check also the edge of the surround on the cone, pag may maitim na circumference sa loob, sign yan nung rugby na ginamit pandikit :) Try pushing the driver in, tignan kung matigas pa ang surrounds. To be sure na di nakalikot, try getting exotic design na drivers. Para sigurado di makalikot dahil walang pampalit dito.

To be sure na di nakalikot, try getting exotic design na drivers. Para sigurado di makalikot dahil walang pampalit dito.

This is a good tip ...

Further,

Take note of the models first and then research in the internet about the models before going back for testing and haggling. This is to familiarize how the original drivers looks like. (not all models are available in the internet though).

check the screws of all the drivers - are they all the same or similar? dapat! may kulang ba, o naibang screw (also at the back which usually is the opening of the eraly speaker systems) - di dapat!

The surround - if it is a good-looking foam surround - then it is new one (altered na). If not, check unusual glue in its vicinity. A clean surround vicinity (no unsighty dried glue nearby) indicated untouched surround. Typically, look for speakers that used treated cloth surround or the rubber surround - these are labelled indestructible surround materials. Diatone, technics almost always use this type. Onkyo & pioneer typically uses foam type which degrades overtime (but not all models though) and really requires replacement.

The dust cap, check if there is also an unsighty dried glue in its vicinity - the presence indicate a possible rewound coil.

Check all drivers identical to Left & right. I have encounters na hindi halata, but in close inspection, the HF drivers are not the original (turned out to be the Konzert brand which can be bought sa raon) - this is visual inspection, and I mean open your eyes with close scrutiny to every detail.

Listen. with 1 speaker at a time - at low volume - checking the sound of each driver by placing  your ear close to each driver - observe smoothness of sound from midrange and tweeters. Then at loud volume, checking same loudness emanates from both speakers and no crackling sound whatsoever.

Speakers which seems to have a lot of dust in the drivers is also a good indicator that the units are untouched.

Play with MID and HI controls if it respond to the rotation.

Lastly, if you are satisfied with the sound it reproduce using your familiar CD materials, then you have your best bet in your hands.

you made the right choice if based on used re-sale pricing at Yahoo Japan. historical average completed auction price for Diatone DS-77EX is only slightly above 10,000 yen. for Pioneer S-77 Twin SD, the quoted average price is about 20,000 yen.

Hi Maynard welcome to the surplus Groupies :)

I suggest you visit the pier armed with a list of good units. I myself buy units listed at a japanese website.

http://www.niji.or.jp/home/k-nisi/

The Japanese list has never failed me yet. The units that I bought are all in the list. i.e. a Yamaha NS690, two pairs of Victor SX3. (for amps - Yamaha CA1000, Pioneer SA9500, Sansui Au707Gextra, Sony VFETS.)

Besides, I firmly believe that the items in the list will have higher resale values since you can point potential buyers later to the site.

regards,
Foo

p.s. Translate the Japanese site using altavista http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr

off the top of my head...

If you get lucky.. try looking for the top surplus yamahas.... NS1000m (jackpot ito), NS500m, NS690.
Still... it will be a little useless to mention specific speakers... you probably won't find them at the pier when you visit. It will be better if you bring the list...and check out any speaker at the pier included in the list...

I've seen several speakers on the list at the pier... i've purchased a Yamaha NS690 and a Victor SX3 and am extremely satisfied with them. Of the ones i auditioned but didnt buy... i was always happy with the performances of the speakers but was often blocked by the selling prices...(i always want to get a bargain unit - that's my problem).

I once went through all the stores listing all the speakers that they have... then i went home and checked out all the units in the net. heheh. When I came back to get the unit i liked... it was gone!!!

I've seen a Sony SSG7, a Pioneer S180a... Yamaha NS500, Sony APM77 among others.

Di ba yan sir ung near field monitor? Are the NS10M and NS10M-T similar units? They are a standard in the professional recording industry. Students often choose these monitors for their mixing work because they simulate the sound of smaller consumer speakers (car radio speakers, tv speakers, etc.).

http://www.cdmasteringservices.com/ns10nearfieldmonitors.htm

http://www.cdmasteringservices.com/pressreleaseNS10s.htm

http://www.skidmore.edu/academics/music/att/ns10.html

I saw an ad for a replacement tweeter for the NS10m http://www.datamediastore.com/proaudiovideo-ns10.html
USD 117. Nakufoo!!!

Di na  ba kayang irepair ung tweeter sir? I think you should hold on to your NS10M's ...

Sir if this unit is same unit being sold by Little Chatty, then I concur with sir Sandawa. I auditioned that unit and was on the brink of getting it except I saw a Victor SX3iii also being sold. I compared the two and the Pioneer had more power. The bass was more powerful. The mids and high more forward. (more distinct?). I opted for the Victor SX3 only because i already had a pair and have plans to acquire three pairs for a 6.1 home theatre project.
