The Top Ten DTS DVDs
« on: Jan 10, 2002 at 08:30 PM »
Taken from dvd.ign.com (link), here are the top 10 DTS DVDs to show off your home-theater system:

#1: The Haunting
Hands down, this is the most impressive DTS soundtrack yet released. While some may not be too impressed at the movie itself, put this DTS DVD into your player and be prepared to be blown away.
The scene with the pounding on the door features such intense bass, it will shake your house to the foundation and cause the neighbors to call the cops.

#2 Gladiator
Coming in a close second is another disc from Dreamworks, and another that features a DTS ES track.
Great ambience, stunning separation, and deep bass makes this discrete DTS mix quite a treat and one of the best yet on DVD.

#3 Saving Private Ryan
When Private Ryan was released theatrically in 1998, audiences were impressed by the incredible sound design in the opening Normandy Invasion.
The disc was a natural for DVD, and while the Dolby Digital disc featured a thunderous mix, the DTS version edges it out in terms of quality. This mix is so good, you'll be ducking from the bullets.

#4 The Jurassic Park Trilogy
The original DTS film slammed onto DVD with some problems in the pressing that caused faulty discs. However, all of that has now been solved and you can once again experience the same earth-shaking sound that made people say "I must have that in my home" back in 1993.

#5 Terminator 2: The Ultimate Edition

One of the first DVDs ever released was an edition of T2 from Live. When the film got the super DVD-18 special edition, it was also given an extremely impressive DTS track.
Just as the original DVD was used to demo the format to early adopter, this DTS mix can be used to show off your home theater.

#6 Air Force One (Superbit)

For quite a while, the original Air Force One DVD reigned supreme as one of the best examples of how impressive Dolby Digital could be on DVD.
With the Superbit release, an equally stunning DTS mix was created and it's one that should not be missed.

#7 U-571
You may wonder why this disc is on this list. However, fire up the DTS track and head to the scene with the depth charges and you'll see the light.

#8 Apollo 13
This is one of my favorite films of all time, and the DTS mix is great. One very impressive moment of bass is the "thwomp" of the fuel pumps right before the Saturn 5 lifts off.

#9 The Die Hard Special Edition Trilogy
Action films definitely need great sound, and when Fox released the special edition Die Hard trilogy, they added in DTS tracks to each film to give the bass an extreme boost.

#10 Moulin Rouge
If you want a good DTS disc that doesn't rely on explosions to impress, the Moulin Rouge DVD won't disappoint.
From the ambience of the musical numbers to the bass of the windmill blades, it's one fun mix to listen to.

nice list.  i'm a bit skeptical about the Haunting, but then again, i haven't tried it on DVD yet.

but i think Das Boot should be in the list instead of U-571.  Das Boot kicks U-571's @$$!   :)

I have my doubts on this list with the ommission of The Fifth Element. This dvd is the absolute dvd used by home theater afficionados and stores to show off the crisp sound and bright, clear colors. One very memorable scene to test your TV picture clarity and receiver/speakers caliber, jump to the alien diva singing and you will know what I am talking about.

I have to agree...

Some of ign.com's choices are questionable, but like everyone else, I guess they're entitled to their own opinions. On the other hand, I think they should've included Desperado (Superbit)  ;D

I totally agree. Her singing still gives me goosebumps.

As far as I know, there is no DTS release of Das Boot, so it cannot be included in the list.  ;)

You better turn-on your Cinema RE-EQ. dahil sa sobrang kalansing ng mga sword-clanging fight-scenes.

Kung sa Ambiance ang paguusapan eh wala ng tatalo sa eerrie holosonic sound ng The Cell, its not DTS but its countinous and unnerving surround sound will chill you.  Reference quality din ang picture quality nito ala superbit (sa widescreen discplay)

I haven't seen any Das Boot DVD in DTS.  Meron ba?

Kahon, there's no DTS DVD of Das Boot but the Total Remastering effort done on this movie's audio mix was exemplary, and warrant it as a Reference quality in sound even though is only in Dolby digital.

Hey Guys,

DTS demo disc #4, #5 & #6 available again in Electronic Depot. I just bought #4 & 5 tonight and all I can say is just that DTS is a better format than Dolby Digital. The LFEs are just "earth shaking"!

Demo #4
  • dts logo:sonic landscape
  • dances with wolves
  • the haunting
  • antz
  • eagles:hotel california
  • roy orbison:pretty woman
  • sheryl crow:am i getting through
  • saving private ryan

Demo #5
  • gladiator
  • the lost world:jurassic park
  • titan a.e.
  • u-571
  • chicken run
  • steely dan:cousin dupree

Its quite expensive for something they give out to, i think home theatre stores in the States. But I can't find any other stores that sell these.Electronic is selling the demos for P750 each. But to hear Haunting, Titan A.E. and the over-played Hotel California (they play this in all the home theatre stores here), its worth bucks I paid for it.I guess. ;D
It takes a little more persistence to get up and go the distance

Yup your DTS Demo discs are good buys!  Personally, when I want to influence somebody in the hometheater thingie, I just plug in the Demo disc and just wait at their reactions.  They are very good recordings and you don't have to look for a scene in a standard DVD just to show off your HT.  Super cool! ;)

Elf-  Haven't seen DTS Demo Discs #1-3 even on dtsonline.  Maybe they always run out of stock or they don't manufacture them anymore when the newer versions came out.
