Many people have already mentioned these titles, but just want my votes and two centavos be counted...
Titles I will not get:
Shrek
- don't get me wrong, this film had its funny moments...the first 20 mins are hilarious. It's just that after that, they stopped injecting parodies of the fairy tales (which, in my opinion, gave it laughs and made it interesting) instead focusing on the relationships of Donkey, Shrek, and the Princess. There isn't anything wrong with that, I just didn't feel the wit or the chemistry between Murphy and Myers was with at par with what we've already seen in computer animation buddy movies (i.e. Hanks and Allen). I'm big fans of both comedians, but they just didn't seem to gel in this film. And they didn't put enough of Lithgow in it...he was priceless!
Pearl Harbor
I salute Michael Bay and Bruckheimer for the effort, but they got really muddled in their execution. They wanted to tell a story about the glory, sadness and heroism of war, but they wanted to attract the appeal that was generated by Titanic (i.e. personal love story amidst historical tragedy/turmoil). There was obviously a tug of war between these two opposing concepts and everybody lost. They combined several tried and tested hollywood formulae in the picture, hoping to hit gold, but they really fell flat on their faces.
It remains to be seen if Bay's director's cut is a more coherent version, or just a longer cut of the movie many wanted to walk out of halfway through...
M:I2
Tom Cruise is ok and John Wu is a visionary, but the movie's script is to blame for its awfulness. The whole movie is one long rip-off with firecrackers attached. Anyone who's seen Hitchcock's Notorious will know that MI:2 practically photocopied the script and reshot it, badly. The worst thing of all, nowhere in all its promotion, nowhere in the interviews of the scriptwriter and director and crew, no one acknowledges that they've ripped off Hitchcock. To remake Hitchcock is one thing (not wise), but to rip off one of his movies and count on the probability that no one's seen it is another....
MI:2 is probably just one of many of Hollywood's recent ripoffs.
Tomb Raider
The game is nice, Jolie is yummy, and I wanted to like this movie really bad. But I could only think one thing while I sat there in the theater for a couple of hours:
NOT EXCITING, ENTERTAINING, or even FUNNY.
