Hi gurus,Thinking of venturing to the world of vinyls. Anyone here has experience with Technics SL-DD20??? Is it any good? Are the replacement parts still available? Or will this give me a lot of headaches in the future? TIA
Sir better go for SL1300, SL1600, SL1700 or if you have the budget, SL1200 MK2 (or MK3, MK3D/M3D, MK5, MK6, MK5G/M5G variants). The reason why the SL1200/1210 remains high in value (whether new or used) is not only because of its durability but also because of parts availability. I have repaired other Technics models but unfortunately when some parts are damaged, replacements are really hard to find. Most of the time, salvaging parts from other units is the only solution. Brand new parts for the 1200s can still be ordered. So basically when other Technics models have broken parts, repairing and restoring them to it's original state would be very difficult. Especially the ones with automatic cueing tone arms. Same this applies with Stanton turntables. Their parts aren't easily available.Just a note: Some people would claim that Stantons are better than Technics because of it's torque (aka world's strongest motor). But in reality, the torque of Technics is more than enough and no need for a stronger one. Also, Stanton decks have very cheap construction especially in the internal. The SL1200 uses it's main diecast frame as its heatsink as part of its unique design whereas the Stanton (ST-150/STR-150) have metal fins internally that serves as heatsinks and gets really hot inside. Some other features that Stanton have added are basically useless especially for home use. They have no resale value like Technics SL1200 does. So going for the 1200s is a very good investment.I'm not being biased here on Technics 1200s but millions of people who own them would agree. They are built like tanks. I would 100% choose a used SL1200 MK2 (and other variants) over a brand new Stanton anytime.
If I may further suggest, better save up for an SL-1200 so that it will be a one time-big time expense for you...can't go wrong w/ the SL-1200!
How about yung mga vintage na Sony, JVC or Pioneer, are they any good? Or any model in particular?
Sir since most (if not all) models from mainstream bands like Sony, Pioneer, JVC, Kenwood, etc have been discontinued long time ago, I doubt that their parts are easily available. So as suggested, go for Technics SL1200 (M3D or MK3D are the best models of the 1200 series). Don't rush in getting one, I'm sure madami pa ma-huhunting dyan. If you need some figures about pricing of new-in-box and used units, PM me. May mga dumadating/dumadaan naman sa akin from time to time.
