Will these new generation players still be able to play our existing DVDs ??? I'm fine upgrading hardware but to have to buy my dvds again because there is a new format is going to be expensive :P

Dracula, all new HD players will be able to play our existing DVDs plus with upscaling feature up to 1080p through HDMI as per SONY BD's case  :D

Watching our normal DVDs thru upscaled HDMI may result in near HD quality  :)

I'm comparing the technical feature of both HD DVD and BD.  I think Bluray is better.  I may be wrong though.

yeah....blu-ray is better at this point, capacity wise..and more titles (studios) on its side, and its players can output 1080p (hd-dvd has only 1080i initally).  But it doesnt matter to me, my monitor outputs 720p/1080i only.   And blu-ray costs more... :)  Solution?  get a HD-dvd player and get the ps3 later...hehehe ;D

Due to the high price I will certainly looking forward to PS3. Since PS3 is also a game console, we can both watch movies & play games during our leisure time. Flexibility is the name of the game.  :D

I'd wait a year or two before buying these HD players to let em work out the glitches, lower price and have a more robust disc library. :)

Not neccesary Philander in view PS3 hasn't finalized its specs.

In essential, PS3 is a game console & may exceed in that manner but as compared to a stand alone HD player, perhaps certain areas are still lacking.

Guess we'll know once SONY confirms its final specs or better still...wait till the full consumer's report is out after the launch & test drive. :)

yer right paul, being a game console, it will surely lack some features that a standalone BD player have.  But if you want basic features in watching HD,this is pretty affordable if its under the $500 mark.  Compare it to other $1000 players and if you also happen to be a gamer, then its a pretty safe investment. :)

Yep Munskie....value for money. I'm a SONY loyalist since the original PS1 release then shifted to PS2 (that's how I got hooked with DVDs :( ) & finally there's every reason to move forward with PS3. :D

PS2 price has dropped a lot. My last shopping, saw it at around 13k & bundled with 20 games of your choice. Could be even cheaper by now?  ::)

Dang !!!!  its a given that HD DVD will have the advantage in pricing of its titles.....but what with the dearth of tiles that will come from that side, even na naman ba??....blu-ray simply has the numbers with the studios supporting the format.  But if we look at the game console wars when xbox was released, i think only a handful of game manufacturers supported its release.  but as the time went by....companies like EA/EASports released games for the xbox eventually.   Is it possible to have peaceful coexistance of BD and HD-DVD, just like what we have in the game console industry?

Nice titles.  Very few and none of them interest me.  But I guess if you have the Blu-ray player, it makes sense to have at least a couple of these for starters.   ;D  In the meantime, the titles are not inspiring enough for me to get a HD player.  But the more compelling reason is that I can't afford either.   ;D

If they can do it with games, they can very well do the same with the HD format this time.  There are plenty of DVD authoring companies that serve independent film studios  I would imagine HD and BR authoring companies will likewise crop up.  That way the market can have a choice between, say, a Terminator movie in HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
