I totally agree. Big discounts/Lower prices on discs will really boost the format. This might be a strategy of blueray to show more sales data that they are blowing away hddvd. Especially coming april, may, june when Pirates will be coming out and more other titles. Just having cheaper players wont do it. Just for example, The Departed, Bd cost 23 something (I think) while HDDVD cost 27 plus. I think bec its a combo disc. I hate combos. The people arguing for combos say they like this idea for the reason:
1. Their kids room have standard dvds, they can share it around
2. BD fox titles cost even more
3. Standard dvds in cars, boats etc.
My argument is:
1. What percentage of people have dvds in cars, boats etc. To me only very small
2. Fox titles that cost more is hi def content only, there is a diff effect, wherein the actual thinking of people is:There is nothing in that disc that is kind of useless. I would pay 35 dollars per disc for star wars series if I have to. Thats just me tho.
3. "Kids room dvd theory" is just nonsense to me because anyway how often does the kids watch dvd on their own. (However, I dont have any kids now so I wouldnt know, I hope and praying to have some soon, Im getting old hehe) Usually they can watch in the living room or bedroom with the parents to watch true hi def, Remember a lot of people (actually the majority including me ) are saying if one goes hi def they will never go back to SD, So I dont get their reason for supporting combos.
On another note, this sale could mean one thing. This is just my opinion...It could be BD disc is not selling well and there are a lot of stock. They can go 50%. On the other hand, overall hddvd is selling well and they dont need to do a 50 percent sale bec of higher demand. (especially from last year). I cant agree right now the 2 to 1 margin sales or more BD is saying because there are really more releases from Bd this year and of course the release of Ps3. When the china players are out (this yr) and more and more hddvd titles come out by year end and still by first/second quarter of next year we are seeing greater lead by BD over hddvd in terms of standalones and software, then that is a better indication of where this war is heading.
