Infocus 4805 and Video Scaler (GRABE)
« on: May 24, 2006 at 09:07 PM »
I recently bought a video scaler ( from AVDI ) and paired it with my infocus SP4805, the image was GRABE. Im using the 4805 now in 720p format. Color , detail (specially in fast moving scenes), depth, black level all improved dramatically .

The video scaler that I bought is DVDO VP-30  :D

From the dvd player I used the component output (interlaced or progressive) going to the vp-30, from the vp-30 , I used the component output (BNC with RCA adaptors) to the SP4805  :D

For the price, pls call them 6388480

hmmm...just my thoughts..
4805 is a 480p PJ...you're just using a 720p source...but still displaying it at 480p.
4805 would just downscale the image from 720p to 480p...
if you have a great player to begin with I doubt if you find can find an improvement from using a scaler since upscaling is just interpolating. ..
but if the 4805 downscaling(720p->480p) is better than its pixel-to-pixel map(480p-480p) processing...
I would consider it a 'defect' since pixel-to-pixel map(no overscan) should theoretically produce the best result...
but in your case its an 'added feature'.

for me..mas ok pa din yung 720p to panny ae900..sinubukan ko yung 1080i e may nakita na akong jaggies..

*sana may ganyan ako kagandang scaler  ;)

I have been using scalers for the last 4 years to improve my picture quality, My latest scaler is the one built in the Anthem Avm50 pre/processor which uses the Gennum Vpx engine. I almost bought the vp30 in the US before buying the AVM50. Did you get the vp30 with the advance SD deinterlacer? If you did not, its worth considering it. It will bypass the SI504(old deinterlacer chip) with the more advance chip.

I think you have to try to scale down to 480p so that there would be less processing. I believe if you feed a 720p signal to the 4805, it will actually downconvert it to its native resolution using the 4805's own scaler. If you feed it with 480p signal from the vp30, your projector will bypass its scaler.

With the quality of your scaler, I think its high time that you replace it with a better unit. The ptae900 is pretty cheap, but if you calibrate it properly,  it will kick ass. 720p is the way to go, unless you can shell out some dough for a 1080p unit.

As for me, I am waiting to install a 1080p projector in 2 week's time.

Just a suggestion, use the interlaced output of your dvd player and not the progressive mode. If possible use a DVD player with hdmi output to do this. this will preserve the original signal going to the vp30 before processing
