Re: Onkyo 607 Calibration dilemma
« Reply #1354 on: Mar 05, 2010 at 11:55 AM »
Hi Guys!
I need your expertise on calibrating my 607.
My Setup: ts-xr607, Polk Audio TSi200(Bi-Amp),TSi100,CS10,PSW110

My current settings(By Audessy+min adjustments)
Speaker Config : Sub = Yes, Front = 40hz, Center = 40hz, Surround = 40hz, LPF = 80hz
Speaker Distance (ft): Sub = 10, L/R = 9, Center = 9, Surround L/R= 4
Level Calibration : Sub = -15db, L/R = -6db, Center = -8db, Surround L/R= -8db

try changing the crossover to 80 hz for the front, center and surround and LPF to 120hz
maintain the speaker distance as this is usually accurate after audyssey
for the level calibration, i chose zero for allIs there something wrong with my settings?
The bass doesn't work when playing audio cd using Pure Direct and other presets.
When watching  movies , i need to crank the volume to 45 to get descent bass..

pure audio sound mode and direct sound mode eliminates digital circuitry and dispsnes all sound through your front speaekr only, these setting provides sound according to how the music was recorded thus no enhancement produced, whne choosing this sound mode, you should change yuor sub setting to NO reminder though that this setting is only good for music listening that dont require heavy bass, if you want the bass, it should be either stereo and all channel stereo, then set the sub to YES againThanks!

what is the use/or purpose of level calibration?

Usually po all channels will be sweeped by white noise and you adjust each of the channels so that they may be balanced.  Para po sa main listening position, the volume of all the channels are level with each other.  No channel is louder or softer than the other. Dati po we do manual calibration but with the advent of the Audyssey technology now present in most receivers it should be easier.  Though some still prefer manual calibration over Audyssey.

that's because audyssey equalizes sound at reference levels where it sounds really great. but once you listen below reference levels -- which we almost always do because the reference level is usually too loud for home listening -- the sound seems too thin for our tastes. unless you have dynamic eq, good ol' tweaking is necessary when listening at below reference levels to compensate for the equal loudness contours.

Laguna Sir yung seller? papost naman review mo sa new acquisition mo na  ht-r500 Sir
yes sir sa laguna, san pablo to be exact as of this time im only using it with a generic aiwa speaker from my byenan ;D for stereo listening and a genric powered polytron subwoofer. tunog lata pa kasi buti na lang may subs kaya hindi masyado masakit sa tenga. used to be a past owner ng onkyo(tx sr503), and from my past experience i've found it to be really good in music(stereo and prologic music IIx). kaya nung nakita ko for sale htr500 nangati kaagad pwet ko para mabili receiver na yun assuming na it will sound also like my past 503. by the way proud owner pa rin ng hk receiver ;) i'll keep you posted pag nakumpleto na po tong set up na to :)

http://gizmodo.com/5488963/onkyos-tx+sr608-is-the-first-thx+certified-3d-av-receiver-and-has-six-hdmi-inputs

Onkyo USA has announced March deliveries of its first 3D-Ready home theater receivers and home theater in a box (HTiB) systems. The new models consist of three A/V receivers and three HTiB systems ranging in price from $299 to $599, and all of them support the new HDMI v1.4 connectivity standard for new 3D video displays and Audio Return Channel capabilities. All are exceptionally well equipped to provide a superior music, home theater sound and video experience, with high build-quality and offering excellent value.

For Onkyo, a name that translates roughly to 'sound harmony' in Japanese, sound quality is preeminent. All these new receivers and HTiBs now decode lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstreams, and include new 192-kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown PCM1690 DAC's that are highly resistant to clock jitter and provide a remarkable 113-dB dynamic range. The lineup includes Onkyo's new easy-to-setup overlaid onscreen graphical display that lets the user watch the program in the background while using the function menus. Additionally, all 2010 HDMI v1.4 models include a new feature call HDMI Thru. HDMI Thru allows content to pass through to the TV when the receiver is in a standby state.

The new TX-SR608 7.2-channel THX-Select2 Plus certified receiver has new power amplifier section that uses three-stage inverted Darlington output topology, and a power boost from 90 to 100 watts. Audyssey DSX dimensional sound processing has been added to its predecessor's Dolby PLIIz capabilities. Additionally, all video sources, including those using the new PC input, and regardless of source resolution, can be upscaled to big and beautiful 1080p via HDMI and Faroudja DCDi Cinema™. The TX-SR608 will also include a front HDMI input, a feature first introduced by Onkyo in 2009. The TX-SR608 will be available in April at an MSRP of $599.

The 5.1-channel TX-SR308 and 7.1-channel TX-SR508 round out this initial announcement of A/V Receivers from Onkyo. The TX-SR308 will be available in March with an MSRP of $299, a followed by the TX-SR508 in April for $399.

The HTiB package systems, which each consist of a receiver, speakers and a subwoofer, are the 5.1-channel HT-S3300 and 7.1-channel HT-S5300; the latter also includes an iPod dock. Thanks to the HDMI interface and the use of advanced Dolby and DTS codecs, all of these receivers and systems are also capable of decoding lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The HT-S3300 will ship in March with an MSRP of $379, followed by the HT-S5300 in April for $599.

A third packaged system departs from the traditional HTiB form factor and uses a combination subwoofer and 3D Ready A/V receiver plus two front speakers. It uses Onkyo's own Theater-Dimensional processor to create an immersive and convincing surround effect through just 2.1 channels. The HTX-22HDX has three HDMI v1.4 inputs, handles HD audio formats from DTS and Dolby; offers four distinct audio modes for gaming; and outputs for additional speakers. The HTX-22HDX will ship in May with a $349 MSRP.

"Onkyo's 2010 entry-level product line represents a significant jump over last year's line," said Paul Wasek, Onkyo USA's marketing manager. "We are excited to deliver this first wave of 3D capable products. By upgrading to 1.4, even on the least expensive HTiB, we have eliminated all HDMI pass-through products and allowed HD audio formats to be used across the line. The fact that consumers can now buy a THX-Certified receiver with 1080p upscaling, Burr-Brown DACs, PC input and more for under $600 shows Onkyo's clear commitment to delivering performance and value to consumers."

All of Onkyo's receivers offer exceptional connectivity options with as many as six HDMI inputs, plus component and composite video, numerous stereo input jacks, optical/coaxial digital inputs, and the popular front-panel connections on many models. Two models include Sirius Radio connections, and all these receivers incorporate Onkyo's proprietary Universal Port (U-Port) connector which simplifies connections to optional HD Radio tuners and iPod Docks (included with the HT-S5300).

I just closed a deal to buy HT-S3200 in two days, and now I come home to read this. The successor HT-S3300 is just around the corner. Sigh. The thought of having HDMI audio decoding (no more need for a separate optical cable), plus lossless HD audio at the same price range (hopefully)... Hintayin ko na lang kaya ito. What a way to lose excitement about the current model.

I've recently done some research because I'm building a 5.1 home theater system from scratch. Onkyo 507 and 606 were among those that I was considering. The 606 is a higher-end but older model, and there are some complaints regarding it's HDMI board running into problems after a year of usage. The 507 is a lower model but is newer, and so far I haven't found as many complaints online (perhaps because it's still less than a year in the market). Some people also report that 507 generates less heat than 606 after hours of operation. All in all, I'd get the 507.

Regarding the Polk RM7, I honestly don't know about them. A quick check at Amazon shows 3 reviewers loving it, and 1 reviewer calling the sound "horrible". http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Satellite-Speaker-Single/dp/B000YNOWTS So better if you audition them and decide for yourself. It's selling for $80 per piece so the Onkyo 507 + 4 pcs. Polk audio RM7 for less than P20K seem to be a very good deal.

I used to own a 507. I have only 2 complaints.

1. There's no upscaling of video to hdmi. When you use component or composite connection, you also have to use the same out from the receiver to the monitor.

2. User Interface is displayed on the Receiver only.

SQ? I can't really say since I haven't compared it to a different receiver of the SAME wattage. If I remember correctly, the 507 is 75watts/ch. It's probably ok for satellites.

I replaced it with a denon 1910 which to me, sounded "cleaner/softer" to the ear and had more impact/punch than the 507. Probably due to the higher wattage.
