Yup I should have rephrased that better. The total power output should lower down proportionally based on the number of channels being driven.

Sharing an article on an older Onkyo 7-series
http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/article/onkyo-tx-sr706-av-receiver?page=0,2
To summarize, yes it can reach 70 to 80w easily while running 5-channels on an ok THD level but it won't be able to last for about 5 seconds before it clips when run continuously. That max 35w posted is even running on 4-ohms, just imagine how many watts it will get on 8-ohms. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing Onkyo, I'm actually gonna get another one of their avrs, probably a 709 or an 809 in the future but I'm just not setting my expectations that high. Plus you are right, if your ears are satisfied with the performance of the AVR, good for you, you just saved a ton of money  :)

Aside from what's already mentioned (number of channels driven and measurement tolerance for distortion), most AVRs are also measured for max output at 1kHz (instead of a full band 20Hz-20kHz spec). Dynamic headroom can also be very different.

JEITA numbers make me :( at times.

Finally set-up my wife's 809. Pretty full and heavy sound quality out of the box. Sa next vacation nalang fine tuning ng settings but this AVR seems to rock hard.  Wife is very happy.

New Onkyo Receivers May Suffer From Defects – Free Repairs Offered

Onkyo says that the receivers that carry the non-safety related defect were made between November 2011 and January 2012.

First and foremost, nothing is wrong with the receivers that's dangerous. There won't be fires or sparks or anything like that. Onkyo says that there are two big issues here. The first is that the unit may turn off automatically right as you turn it on. The second is that you may be experiencing noise from the speakers when at low volume. been browsing around avsforums, when the press release came out there has been rejuvenated talk of how onkyo's QC is crap. based on my observation though, actual reports of owners experiencing the issue are quite few.

i ordered a 709 just last week before the recall came out, it was a "1Y" but fortunately after checking on the website, it reports that my unit should be fine. I'm hoping there's no issue once it gets here.

on other note though, TX-NR717 & TX-NR818 just announced...

Onkyo Mid-Range AVRs Deliver High-End Performance
http://onkyousa.com/press_releases.cfm?id=254

Good news: MultEQ XT32 on TX-NR818
Bad news: 2EQ on TX-NR717
More bad news: $100 price increase on MSRP ($999 for 717; $1,199 for 818)

^ or maybe even Trinnov which has been said to be better (but prohibitively more expensive) than Audyssey  8)

if they're bringing XT32 + 9.2 pre-outs down to the 818, TX-NR3010 & TX-NR5010 better have Audyssey Pro + 11.2 processing

Uy Bro kamusta ka na rin!  You still haven't availed the freebies I offered.  Hehehe.  I won't forget how intimidating your SVS looked, but wife is really elated with the quality of your Infinity.  Natapat lang na meron friend from Cainta who arranged for the balikbayan box shipment of our 809 to Manila when he toured the US last Xmas - nakulam ko rin syang bumili ng 809 kaya sabay kami.  Took only about month to reach Manila from CA - very safe and buong buo ang package.  Ayun hapi-hapi kami pareho.

Keep in touch Bro!

The 757 was one fine model.  Honestly, I still find the Yamaha warmer sounding than Onkyo, but Onkyo has been offering good-grade modern AVRs at very tempting prices compared to their equivalent Yamaha models.  The 809 sounds really nice out of the box - I like the heft of its sound, and it should even be better with proper calibration.  But my wife never bothered to use YPAO even once and just kept it sealed, so I dont expect her to use Audyssey either.   Basta buong-buo ang sound out of the box and maganda ang soundstage, ok na yon.  Hehehe.

Thanks

If the amp spec says something about the damping factor, that should also help. there are low wattage amps with high damping factors that can run a speaker nicely because it has good control over the driver.

these will be amps with 2 ohm ratings...

this is typical of all amps, not just ONKYO, understand that power transformers of any amp is limited in power capacity so that at some point, clipping is reached resulting to gross distortions as shown in the graphs below:

the higher distortion levels at the mW levels is due to cross-over distortion plus hum and noise....
