i agree. it's better to save up and buy the best you can from the start. it's more costly if you compromise and end up not liking what you have and then upgrading. hassle pa to sell your old gear. besides its so satisfying building your system piece by piece :D

Guys,

I purchased the Onkyo HT-S670 Home theater package for my sister.  This is really value for money, this already includes an active subwoofer. :) for only 29K. I just wanna know how far is this setup from other mid level receivers of Onkyo? the 702 series...

Hi guys,

here are some of the pics from my purchase of the onkyo SR705

Box

Box Opened

Front

Rear

Remote Comparison

Note: No subs Yet and auto calibration not used yet.
speakers are wharfedale evo
Initial Toughts:
Connectivity:
The 3 HDMI ports are just about right to cover any current and future HDMI connections i will have.
You can reassign digital connection to any any mode you wish, but analog connections are not re-assignable.
xyvcc color space support is good if your LCD and source supports it.

Heat:
a bit warm to the touch but nothing serious... but i 've never set volume beyond -10db

pop noise:
non noticed

Switch noise:
there is a certain "switch" noise that occurs when audio formats that are sent to the reciever are changed.
This noise can be unsettling for me... but i got used to it after awhile

Remote:
remote i quite filled with functionalities and can double as a universal remote, havent had time to mess with all of the functionality yet.

DSP:
im not that much a fun of using DSP's, i normally use either the direct, pro-logic music/game/movie
I dont have a comparison point for this so can't say much.

Dolby TrueHD:
untested yet... wait till i get PS3

Sounds:
Surround test: passed (easy test)
bass test:
felt @ 60hz
heard @ 80hz
High range test:
hear @ 17Khz, but my friends can hear it still all they way at 20khz

Note: basically it sucks with lf freq now because i dont have a sub yet. hf seems good except that my ears can't hear passed 17khz it seems.

Power:
more than enough  for my room, i set volume to -30db to -24db because any louder might disrupt the neighbors.

Conclusion:
Im glad i got this reciever  ;D
now i just need a sub and a ps3 hehe

my internet shopping skills still need improvement... i havent learned how to hunt for discount coupons hehe

as for speakers, wharfedale EVO Center, 8 and 30.

still canvassing for velodyne subs... probably CHT 10R.

hi allen.... pa-audition naman ng onkyo and evo's mo once ma-complete mo na setup mo, kahit wala pa yung sub. cainta ka lang di ba? marikina naman kami.  ::)

anyway, you won't go wrong with the velodyne cht-10r but you may also want to consider the REL Strata II joel is selling at the b&s section. nice reviews esp. this lengthy one:

@mher70:
may $1k ceiling ang johnny air kasi, b4 start taxing you.. kaya di kaya sabay :(
worse.. tumaas prices ng 605 huhu

@gearhead: sure, np for the demo.... i'll update you guys once its hooked up.
thanks for the link and head up on the REL Acoustic Strata, but with his price.. i could add a little already and get a BNEW velodyne CHT10R with warranty. I just don't see the value in investing for the unit :(

but i'd like the reviews though old, praise the unit very well :)

@matz: thanks, this is probably accumulated forum research time of.. hmm... 10-11 months since i started asking for advice on the forums.. hehe... still have a long way to go... subs and especially room accoustics.. will probably take me another year to figure out...

@leomar: i'd love to test HD decoding, but currently no player outputs dolby or DTS HD streams.. last i heard...
if there was any.. it would probably break my already stretched budget.

pag may ps3 na ako and/or maybe pc w/xbox hdvd add on... and kaya i-force ang hd streams to reciever.. sige post ako ng feedback :)

BTW, does anyone know exactly how strong/watt an AVR should i use at least for this reciever? i currently have 1500 watt AVR but almost everything in the room is connected to it.. so it's probably overloaded already...

also, anyone willing to help me with cabling? :P
originally a freind of mine was gonna help out.. but it might take him too long to dropby hehe

I know Greenwoods, medyo mas Pasig na nga yan kesa sa Cainta.  Although sa laki ng Greenwoods, yung iba ay naging Pasig.

Color-coded naman yung cables... so di ka basta-basta malilito.  Kung willing kang magpa-mini-EB jan sa lugar mo.. I'm sure na marami kang makakatulong.  ;)

ok lang ako sa mini -eb :p

its crimping and connecting my speaker cables from receiver to speakers... i think my cables are a bit too thin... huhu

UPDATE: got the EVO 30 connected in stereo mode with basic wiring. with great difficulty...

sounds good... makes me wonder how it would sound like with bi-wiring and bi-amping(supported by receiver) in 5.1  ::)

also, running the receiver with my curretn 1,500 watt AVR with all the other electronics connected to it caused my AVR to work extra hard... will definetly have to buy a dedicated AVR for the damn receiver hehe

hmm... it seems you have better skills hunting for gear than inter-connecting them.  ;D

anyway, some suggestions.

for your cabling need... if you're not planning of getting those expensive exotic cables, i recommend you get the ACE (hardware) AWG14 gauge cable from your nearest SM outlet. there are available 25ft and 50ft lengths i think. you can use two runs for the fronts for biwiring and just a single run to your rears. you can also try the shops in raon where you might chance upon some AudioPro AWG#12 speaker cables.

for the AVR, you will spend about 3,500 for a good servo-controlled unit... so you may also explore the possibility of going straight for a line conditioner instead. there's the Xindak XF500 for P4,500 and the Bada LB3300 for P6,000.

i have "electrical wiring" phobia haha

i already have cables, brand is AXE spk-105a is the model. i had a whole roll imported from taiwan... unfortunately i didnt do advance research enough and when i got the cables.. they are composed of multiple very thin strands.. but total effective thickness is about AWG 16 or 14.. its just that the small strands break off easily.

AVR i normally use the omni brand due to quiter operation and fair price for their higher wattage models.

Last i checked line conditioners don't adjust voltage( correct me if im wrong) so buying a line conditioner wouldn't solve my problem of providing enough wattage at 120 volts to my AVR.

btw, just getting the evo 30 with simple wiring took my like 2-3 hours to do it..... i really suck at crimping and wiring hehe
