There has been a big demand for the original theatrical releases to be released on DVD, so I guess Lucas is trying to please that lot of the SW fans. I personally would like to own the set of original releases...but 2007 will be the 30th anniversary of SW, will probably wait for the super box set na lang. ;)

May the force be with all of us. ;)

So many version of this.  After 20 year if Lucas is still alive I'm sure he'll make another version of this.  Including EP 1-3.  A boxset would be better containing all unaltered/altered SE, EP1-3,  Clone wars 1-2.  And a senitype (CDA is closed na pla so no more senitype in the future.  :()  or a figure or bust or a replica of that is related to the movie would be great.  And it's better if we could watch it in 1080p. :)

Maybe a 12-disc Ultimate Star Wars Boxset will be released in the future. And they would be released in limited collector' set in the forms of: Darth vader's Head, C3PO's head, R2-D2, and/or the Death Star! ;D

before you plunge into ordering these so-called "original version" releases, the following news bit from thedigitalbits is a must read:

"We've confirmed something today (directly with both Fox and Lucasfilm) that we'd begun to suspect... and it's probably going to disappoint a lot of you. It certainly disappoints us here at The Bits. Those new DVD editions of the Star Wars films? The original theatrical versions of the films are going to be non-anamorphic (our original post on this indicated otherwise, but we have confirmed that the widescreen versions will be letterboxed only). What this likely means is that Lucasfilm has simply re-purposed the non-anamorphic transfers that were done for previous laserdisc and VHS releases of the "original" versions of the films. And with that, our enthusiasm for this DVD release has just dropped through the floor. Anamorphic-enhanced versions of the theatrical editions, we'd buy in a heartbeat. But what we're going to get instead is little better than a ported-over laserdisc. In this day and age, releasing a widescreen film without anamorphic enhancement on DVD is just unacceptable. Does Lucasfilm really think fans want those versions of the films on DVD so badly that people just won't care? Yes Virginia, they do. How many versions of these films do you suppose Lucasfilm will try to get fans to buy in high-def over the coming years? And think about it... you just know the studio has to be prepping yet another standard DVD release for next year's 30th Anniversary of the original Star Wars. Do you suppose this means that the theatrical editions won't be included in the super-über box set of all six films? Probably. Ugh.

Line up like Jersey cows and grease up yer teats, Force fans. Or better yet... run for the south forty as fast as your hooves'll carry you. Stampede!

Star Wars (Sept 12, 2006)
« Reply #575 on: May 18, 2006 at 11:49 AM »
Title: Star Wars
Starring: Harrison Ford
Released: 12th September 2006
SRP: $29.98

Further Details:
The shock news today is that Lucasfilm and Fox Home Entertainment has announced plans to release the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy. In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983. This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st, with each title priced at around $29.98. The International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory. Here's our first look at the proposed artwork.

i will definitely pass on this one, aside from the fact that the audio track will only be in a 2.0 dolby stereo, the video transfer is NOT in anamorphic widescreen, hence the PQ & SQ will just be similar to the LD release :P.........i guess Lucas is reserving a more elaborate (digital transfer & 5.1 audio track) release of this so-called "original version" for a 30th anniv. release in 2007, talking about crappy marketing ploy :( >:( ???

I'm more than happy na rin with the 2004 original trilogy release even though I also prefer the 70s version. At least iyon, dami special features which I like lalo na iyong original trailers and TV spots. Lucas can't seem to give Star Wars a rest.

though it pains me to admit it, lucas is the KISS of movie directors.  how many times has KISS released albums with the same songs.  ganun din si lucas.  flog a dead horse.

You're right about that!! Most probably, next would be the boxset that holds the three. Then after that, a boxset that would hold all 6 movies. Then maybe, an ultimate collector's edition.  ??? ::)

Very interesting article on StarWars.com comparing the changes between the original and the special editions of EPIV. Note: there are more than 120 scenes depicted :o :o :o

If you're more of a Star Wars geek than a film historian, the documentary on the 4th disc of the boxed set is a must-have.

If you're more of a devout movie collector than a Star Wars fan, then the original unaltered versions of the films are a must-own. I'd normally double dip, but the decision to not release the old version in anamorphic widescreen made me decide to pass on this release completely.

Baka... pag lumabas na sa HD-DVD.  8)

I am, eversince 1977.   But I can let this pass until maybe the HD version comes along and an upgrade to my system.   For me, this is really not the right time to be double-dipping on any DVD titles.
