Surround Speaker placement
« on: Jul 28, 2006 at 04:55 PM »
Do you place your surrounds on the wall?

On a speaker stand with the same height as the stands for the fronts or on a substantially raised stand?

Are there any audible differences between the three?

Which do you use?

Also do you place them at the rear of the listening position or at the sides? Which is better?

Assume that we are just going for a 5.1 set-up.....

Thanks ;D

If you intend to use it for home theater, then it should approximate (yup, you guessed it), a Theater.  In many cases, placing the surround speakers about a foot behind your listening position and about one meter above your ear level at your listening position will give you realistic, theater-like effects.  Given these specs, the most logical place would be a side wall on both sides (again, like what they normally do in theaters).  If you opt to use a speaker stand, you may have to look for a 6-7ft stand w/c is very hard to find.
