 :o

pls allow me to butt in :

the free 20in LCD TV model I was offered is LNR-2050
you can choose either the free LCD TV or a free mobile phone

my vote goes to the Samsung too.

thats a very very tempting offer ... but in my case , im holding off for the next model with 1920X1080p native res and 2 HDMI inputs :)

Thanks guys.... I think I'm leaning on the Samsung now... I did see two reviews on the Philips that mentions the black levels weren't good enough for them (probably due to the lower contrast ratio)

Hmmm I thought about a 1920x1080p... but I am assuming it would be so expensive when it comes out that I won't find a justifiable way to afford it.... just like the Sharp Aquos...    I also figure I would have to wait 2-3 years before it would be affordable... mean time, this is instant gratification...   ;D  lastly, all our existing 400++ DVDs are 480 resolution... so I'd have to upconvert/upsample to 1080p ...which I am already doing on my Oppo DV971H + AE700 setup at 720p/1080i  ;D    Here's how I am setup currently:  http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=55046.0

I hardly notice a difference between 480p and 720p even on my 120" screen.  I also noticed, there's hardly significant difference between 720p and 1080i.  I'm concluding here, that there would be little difference between 720p and 1080p anyway,  ...but there is a big difference between 480i and 720p.

....I should mention that if I add P5,000  i can get the Samsung Home theater in a box (DVD player-amp + 5.1)

thats a very very tempting offer ... but in my case , im holding off for the next model with 1920X1080p native res and 2 HDMI inputs :)

well . congratulations in advance :)

but did u write the correct model ?
LE , I think is for the European market ... whereas LA is for Asia and Australasia.

not sure if there are significant differences between the two aside from the model names.

Thanks,.... Yup.. the LE is for Euro and LA for Asia... I saw the specs for LA on the samsung.ph site.
I'm guessing SCART is available on the Euro model....

Heheh.. a friend of mine got the Samsung LCD LE40S71B for only 156K plus all the additionals gadgets for 0% interest for 12 months. he ended up paying monthly of 12.5 k only!! good deal.. somehow the shop got confused with the prices, instead of the card price he was given the cash price.. heheh..

so eric, what did u ended up buying?? friend of mine is selling the bonus LCD tv for 40k.. u think its a good deal? how was it? i am planning to have it as a pc monitor. any recommendations or suggestions? i checked the spec of the 20' LCD.. it says 800 by 600 resolution, what if i used 1024 x 768 resolution for the pc, will it work? what about higher resolutions?? and its not wide screen?!

help newbie here.. hehehe.. thanks folks..

I got the 40" Samsung at P169,900 model is M51 or R51...can't remember....and I sold the free TV and HTIB for a total of P39K.  The 20" is 800x600...more than enough for NTSC broadcasts but you probably can't use 1024x768.

Here's the thing... I got a lemon out of the box...the TV is flickering intermittently...defective LCD panel...so Samsung inspected it at my home in laguna and will be replacing it soon...I even gave them a VCD of the flickering I am experiencing...and I think they will upgrade me to R71 due to my insistence.  I told them to coordinate with the dealer and just tell me when I will be getting the new unit.  Yes, their customer support is good enough.   They even call my home and mobile to update me.

You may want to upgrade the free 20" LCD TV you get to a 32"...probably need to pay P45K additional.

I also heard that if you use a Mastercard (but I think only with Abenson or Avid) you can get an additional "free" thing maybe a P10K discount ...not sure what the details are though...just heard about it.

hello can you elaborate more on the flickering intermittently. Because I bought mine 32inch 71r around June or july and I also notice some twitching like a white light. Parang when you put a piece of paper and a flashlight behind the paper and turning the flashlight on and off. I notice that right away when I installed it myself and the guy from samsung came to install the home theater the next day. I told him about it he said its in the dvd disc. Thou I really dont notice the twitching in the cable tv shows. So I took a disc that consistently does it and went to ansons pasay road where I bought it and tested on theirs. It also does it. However when I tested it in the sony lcds it was smooth and nothing of that sort came out. So now Im wondering whats going on. The weird thing is the same twitching happen mostly in the same scenes of the disc, not only one of my disc but most of them. Secondly it happens only in the samsungs. I tried it in the sonys nothing of that sort happens. Recently ive been viewing a lot of disc and really dont notice it that much now, maybe because I dont want to think of the hastle to return it. Can Anybody help me with this I would appreciate it. Is it a lemon, is it the disc or is it my settings or is that samsungs problem. Thanks

I've read that this is a normal feature of R7 called Dynamic Dimming. Check out the other thread regarding Samsung R7 LCDTVs. Its been previously discussed there.

Actually, I think this goes for all samsung lcd tv's.  I have an r51 and i am experiencing also that one.  i think its not auto dimming because it happens when there are scene changes in dvd movies.

I made a video of it, since it is intermittent.  I showed it to the dealer and the Samsung service man than came to check it.  The flickering seems to originate from the lower left and upper right of the screen.   It happens with any source:  TV, Component, PC VGA, SVIDEO, original DVD.  So it has nothing to do with a "bad" DVD.

Try feeding "no" source in TV, so that all you see is the "noise".  You should see some flickering.  Mine is really bad - unwatchable.  I even tried turning "on" all features, and "off" all features.

Samsung SAYS it is a defective LCD panel...it's official... I have a lemon out of the box.

It has nothing to do with brightness levels changing or change in scene.  It's like what you said that someone is flashing a light behind a piece of paper rapidly.  In this case the "paper" is the screen.

Then sometimes the picture darkens to the point you cannot see anything.

Next time it happens, take a video of it, so the tech guy can see it / show it to his managers. This is common in other models according to the guy.   I'm still waiting for a replacement.

I have decided to downgrade to a cheaper model:  LA40S71B, which might be superior in terms of specs.  I bought the LA40R51B last Aug 6...and I am still waiting for them to get their act together.

Frankly, it is disappointing.  I am writing Samsung Korea soon.

I'd go for Samsung.  Already had too many bad experience with Philips brand.  although I am not saying that Philips LCDs are not good.  I just had enough of Philips brand.

Just sharing my thoughts.   ;)

thanks.
