Medyo mahirap sagutin yang tanong mo.  If you're looking for picture quality, are you looking for a good upconverting player?  Are you on a limited budget?  The Oppo 971H received the highest score ever on Secrets but it would depend on what exactly you're looking for (i.e. what's your display connectivity, SD or upconverted SD to HD, HD, etc.).

Your question is like asking what is the best car in the market today?  :)

It's still the Pioneer 696AV-S, at an affordable(cheaper than the 686, and 676) price of 6K, you get a universal player with HDMI output which may come in handy in the future.  ;)

BTW...it's the only DVD/Divx player that can decode OGM files.  ;D

I agree with bro DU1MIJ, medyo broad po yun tanong nyo. As of the moment, i say ill go for PIONEER 696AV-S, im 1 very happy owner, eventhough my rptv doesnt have the hdmi connections, im very much contented with its dual progressive scan feature, i saw the difference compared to my previous dvd player with progressive scan features too. the Burr Brown Chip, plus higher version of divx, at a very reasonable price....

Its just me.......  ;)

What about Samsung HD841 which can upconvert up to 720p and 1081i thru component video out, aside from being a universal player (DVD-video, DVD-audio, SACD and DiVX). The remote can also control your TV at hindi mapili sa discs na ipi-play.

I agree.  There are many qualifications to the question.  Even within a certain price range.

pwede rin cguro a poll with branded players grouped by price range.  me i got a philips 3026k for 3,490 pesos.  just a basic player with 5.1 output, no divx though.  pwede na sya sa akin for now.  would have liked the pioneer 696k with its good reviews if i had the extra dough.

I usually go for Philips because of overall better ability to read all sorts of discs, and ability to change region code via remote.

For standard TV, I'd go with the DVP5140K/98
  • DivX Ultra
  • Karaoke
  • Progressive Scan
  • 12-bit/108MHz video DAC
  • 192kHz/24 bit audio DAC

For HDTV, I'd go with the DVP5965K/98
  • HDMI
  • DivX Ultra
  • Karaoke
  • HDMI for simple AV connection
  • Video Upscaling up to 1080i
  • High definition JPEG playback
  • 12-bit/108MHz video DAC
  • 192kHz/24 bit audio DAC

and availability of extended warranty, and accredited service centers ...

from what i know there is no "compatibility" issue worst is the marco-blocking bug, which i remember is very minimal to none existent for the oppo 981hd

What I know is that faroudja based upconverting dvd players such as the oppo dv981 and dv971 are prone to macro-block enhance issues. With DLP displays, this issue is said to be more likely to occur, but this issue can be addressed (or minimized) by properly calibrating one's display.

I noticed this issue initially with my oppo dv-981 paired with my Optoma EP709 DLP projector but after some calibration using AVIA, it appears to have gone away.

Here is Oppo's response when I asked them about it (before finally buying together with allenwfc and dum1j):

For front projection maroblocking errors should be a minor conern as
long as you have done a professional grade calibration using AVIA or
DVE. Other calibration discs, such as the THX Optimizer and Monster
Optimizer, will work as well, but we have found that they are less
precise in their contrast and brightness levels.

We would recommend the DV-981HD for this projection unit. You will use
720p through the HDMI output.

Hi,

I am considering the new Oppo DV981 DVD player to match with my
Optoma EP709 DLP XGA projector, which can receive 480i/p, 576, 720p
and 1080i inputs. Would you recommend the DV981 or something else? Is
macroblocking going to be a big issue with projectors such as mine,
or can it be minimized by calibration?

Thanks!
