thanks for the replies. im setting up a small condominium unit bedroom setup with either paradigm cinema 110 5.1 speaker set or polk audio RM20's. can you recommend a receiver? is the Pioneer VSX-LX50 THX receiver kinda ''overkill'' for the speakers and room size considering that it's a small condo unit bedroom?
btw, room size is around 10sqm. (will double check hehe)
No such thing as overkill IMO. the more breathing room your receiver has, the less it is prone to distortion.
If you want proof, modesty aside (for illustration purpose only
) I have a THX receiver, separate THX power amp, a whoppingly powerful THX sub (plus one more sub) in my condo HT & its just a pathetic 12 sqm room!
My bedroom setup w/c is bigger than my HT room uses
small JBL satellites. I once used an entry level receiver that distorts at around 80% of the volume and it could barely fill the room with sound. I recently (2 months ago) changed it to an integrated 5 channel power amp that can play LOUD and really fill the room with sound... at just 50% of its volume w/ NO distortion. Wifey was actually praising the bedroom setup yesterday, lol.
The difference.... is in the power! With excess power there is more dynamic headroom! More juice for surrounds! So that it fills your room with sound. I read in an HT mag article that entry levels compromise power on their surrounds first just so that the fronts will have more.
If its too much, then like sir AV said, just turn the volume down.
Better to be "busog" than "bitin"!
