PS3 firmware update 3.50 coming September 21, adds 3D Blu-ray support

Sony has announced the next update for the PS3. Coming two weeks after the release of system update 3.42  will be firmware update 3.50, the long-awaited update that adds 3D Blu-ray movie support to the console. (The PS3 is already compatible with 3D games.) While the date was announced for Japanese press at the Sony TGS press conference, it's likely that this will be made available worldwide simultaneously.

a bit confused on the 3d bluray support.

what does it do? does it enable the ps3 to play 3d bd's?

Isnt it already capable?

Or is this the ability to convert regular bds to 3d if you have a 3d tv?

THanks!

3D experience on the PS3 is half baked  :( :( :(

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=5172

Quote
As announced last week (see Blu-ray.com, September 16), new firmware version 3.50 is now available for the PlayStation 3, which enables support for the Blu-ray 3D specification on all incarnations of the PS3 console. However, Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD won't be supported on the PS3 during 3D Blu-ray playback.

Thus, when playing back a 3D BD with a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, the PS3 will output DTS. When playing back a 3D BD with a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack, the PS3 will output Dolby Digital. This affects both PCM output and bitstreaming (available on slim consoles only).

As previously reported (see Blu-ray.com, September 14), BD-Java on the PS3 is also limited when playing back 3D BD content.

Joshua Wingfield, Blu-ray.com news contributor and moderator of the 3D subforum, posted an early hands-on report and informed: "I can confirm that with the Ps3 3.50 firmware update it only puts the audio out as DTS standard (lossy) in the bitstream mode. Also the menus on Coraline are flattened to 2D. Subtitles still show up in 3D mode, and so do menus. The image just flattens. Standard DTS is output by bitstream and linear PCM works as well but it still shows it as lossy DTS in the info bar on the PS3. So for now 3D on the PS3...full 1080p to each eye, but no HD audio and no 3D on menu screens or pop up menus. Can't say I'm disappointed. The update was free and the speed on the PS3 doesn't seem to be affected."

Updated to 3.50 firmware, tried playing Monster vs Alien 3d bluray, PS3 finally is 3d bluray capable.
So far playback is smooth not jerky, 3d effect is same with the Samsung 6900, but the ps3 internal fan is loud.
Oh well at least 3d playback upgrade is free, PS3 is the best value for money bluray player.

Recent feedback sa popular private trackers, sa dami ng FW upgrade ng PS3, bumababa (daw) ang compatibility nya with ripped BDs.   So it is currently recommended by prime encoders to switch to no name Asian BD players for better flexibility.  Tsismis lamang po.

My ps3 fat just had red screen of death. i'm thinking of replacing with a slim. does the ps3 slim get very hot if i play Bluray or movies from HD often?
Should i get a laptop cooler under the slim?

How did that happen Sir? Kinda scary.. Only issue I know of is the yellow-light issue which is hardware related.

There is a specific Slim unit that uses a smaller thingamajig that is said to run cooler than the usual PS3 Slims out there. I'll get back to you on this.  ;)

Jake, do you mean 3.50 or 3.55? I have updated mine to 3.55.

Will check later when I get home if my Avatar will play. :)

sorry Paul, my bad.  i meant 3.55 firmware.  i tried my other BDs and it works perfectly well.  it's just the Avatar BD that takes a million years to load.

i was going to test the subs with it the other day and man... just disappointing!  i was only able to watch this BD once!  hay...  >:(

Sir, try to disable your ps3's internet connection. I think it's under network setting. I had that problem as well with my Robin Hood before. Maybe this will do. HTH

Regret to hear about the problem Jake. Hope a new firmware will be released soon to resolve this issue.  :-[

I misread your post actually you're referring to the BD/DVD combo edition. I got the Collector's Extended  Edition which luckily is spared from such fate.

sir [dcw]aaron, let me know if it works for you.  if it does then it must be my unit or the BD.  btw, is your PS3 slim?  Avatar BD the extended or the DVD/BD combo?

That's strange...actually I also had the same problem with my Avatar BD (yung unang release). I just did the same thing, disabled the network connection. I'll try to check it later.

Btw, I haven't updated my firmware yet.

I just ran Avatar (BD/DVD combo) and Robin Hood (Unrated D C), which previously wouldn't play if Internet Connection is enabled, in my PS3 slim. Now, both bd's play even if  IC is disabled or enabled.  ??? Noticeable difference lang na mas matagal mag-load yung movie kapag naka-enable yung IC. Firmware is still 3.5. Now I'm updating it to 3.55...same results lang sir. Both bd's played naman.

Let's just hope that the culprit is  the online feature of the bd and not your console.  :)

My Asian PS3 slim has the latest firmware 3.55
This is what I did when my Avatar Collector's Extended Edition bought from Astroplus took too long to load:

Deleted Avatar saved bd data (saved from previous viewing)
Set BD live connection to "confirm"  then choose "no" when playing the disc (no need to disable internet connection)

Then I played the disc and it loaded normally. Hope this helps.
