The SD DVD video processing (also the upscale feature) capabilities in PS3 out-performs many other standalone DVD players. I got surprised when my PS3 beats my other SONY DVD players including my Toshiba HD DVD player! The PS3 noise reduction feature is smply marvelous! :o

It's very tempted to use the PS3 to play SD DVD as well but I guess for "insurance" purpose, it's better to avoid it & stick to Blu-ray na lang ;D

is that true? sige let me try it this weekend. my PS3 is RegionA and i have limited R1 dvds. let me see if i can detect the difference, just for this purpose. thanks sir paul

what does a mosquito filter do?

Excerpts from PS3 manual/About system software version 2.20 update:

Mosquito Noise Reduction (introduced in version 2.20)- Set to reduce mosquito noise that appears on the edges of visual images.

This option lets you reduce so-called “mosquito noise,” or flicker, that appears on the edge of visual images while you are watching standard DVDs.

*In addition to standard DVDs, you can use this noise-reduction feature on some Blu-ray Discs

Sorry if this might have been asked previously, but the thread has grown too long to search! :)

Question on playing BD movies on the ps3 with an non-full HD TV (1024x768) plasma (Pana 42pv8).  Will ALL BD movies be able to play at least 720p or 1080i on this plasma?  I ask because when browsing the case of some BD movies, I saw 2 columns under video (HD: 1080p and Standard: 480p).  I'm concerned that since the plasma isn't full hd 1080p, then it might only produce at 480p.  Hope not! :)  Thanks.

The PV8 will be able to play 1080P sources but it will downconvert the signal to 720P.

An update to the PS3™ system software was released on June 18, 2008. You can use this update to upgrade your system software to version 2.36.

New for 2.36: System stability during use of some PlayStation® format software has been improved.

No improvement for blu here... :-[ :-[ :-[

Is it ok to buy a PS3 from SM Department Stores, Toy Kingdom, etc.? If not, any suggestions where I could get one locally?

i've been enjoying bluray discs and converted mkvs on my ps3  lately...
the ps3 as a mediaplayer is really a good buy...

- i noticed that the ps3 beats my toshiba hddvd in upscaling SD. (too much grain on HDDVD).

Thanks Mouldingo.  Won't it downconvert to 1080i instead of 720p?
