I tried playing dvds on my ps3, but there is something I can't seem to figure out. The dvds I play (whether 1:85, 2:35 ) have black bars all around, not the usual top and bottom only. The picture screen becomes so small. Anyway, tried setting from the menu settings in the ps3 and set the display to 480p where the 16:9 and 4:3 selection appears and it fixes the problem but that will be 480p only right? Dvd picture is not that great..When I check the 1080p option box, there is no option for the 16:9 or 4:3 that comes out like the 480p option, So the black bars are all around the picture again. Can somebody help me? Something Im doing wrong?  ???..thks

Are these old titles? if yes, they may not be anamorphic, in which case you'll get those black bars all around when viewing thru hdmi.

Hi aeris, the titles I tried so far are True Lies, Youve got mail, the new remastered edition, and Moonraker (viva)..I think they are anamorphic, im not sure tho..Playing True Lies, I have to say it looks so awesome, real sharp, its boxed in so small tho..  the bars are all around where my 46 inch became 32 inches  ;D..(nothing against smaller screens, I have one myself) is irritating/frustrating. Then I tried what Pchin told me where on the menu setting  there are the options 16:9 or 4:3, but this only shows on the 480 option. I tried it (choosing 16:9) and the black bars on the side disappeared but the video looks bad, I still dont have time but will try doing more discs testing and playing around tonight. Thanks sir

ok ive been doing this na pala, I cant seem to find what you are saying, the closest is AV setting, which dont have the options you are saying. It has upscaling option nga like double scale etc. but none about fullscreen, widescreen etc..and another selection, Display settings ata, where the mbps shows etc.etc.., nothing there also about the upscaling option regarding full screen etc. Hay naku. I'm really confused here.  Somebody pls just slap me ;D

try and adjust the settings bro .. if youre into tweaking talaga youll figure that out im sure .. cause i had that same issue testing my dvd title yesterday .. ;D
as far as i remember, its the option with auto, full etc. btw, upscaling at 1080i is a beauty (i never thought that ps3 could upscale this good) .. ;)
im just gonna use this for bluray viewing since pareho lang sila ng upscaling ng htpc ko (full screen pa) .. ;D

ang nakalagay lang is supported HD video output: 720p

tapos: If your television is not compaitble to at least 720p HD display, this game will be displayed in SD

I can play .avi files on my PS3. I don't know if it makes a difference though but since I have a wireless network at home, I use the media server function of the PS3 to access files on my PC. I haven't had any problems playing files on my PS3 using this method aside from the occasional stuttering.
