Viva rant (low-end DVD5s)
« on: Feb 13, 2007 at 01:07 PM »
This refers to those DVD5 released by Viva at a price point of around Php 150-375.  e.g. Brokeback Mountain, In the Bedroom, Mee-Shee, Veggie Tales series...

To me, they are nothing more than glorified VCD on DVD.  Sure, the resolution is higher than VCD, but that's basically it.  Fullscreen.  No subtitles.  Few or no extra materials.  Limited scene selection.

Why Viva refuses to put in subtitles on these DVD5 is annoying.   It's not subtitles takes up plenty of space or that they have to decode them themselves.

Why do they reformat them? When if all they want is to shrink it to fit a DVD5, they should just just DVD Shrink.  That's free (DVD Shrink) anyway.  Or do they just download the video stream off the internet, and have to make the menus themselves?

And Fullscreen?  They are depriving the viewer of watching what the director intended.  It's not even indicated in the box, but you can almost always tell by the packaging...

And will somebody tell Viva, to redo their animated logo in higher resolution.  It's annoying seeing such pixelated mess on a DVD.
