additional good news for us...

Blu-ray Disc player production cost to fall to US$50 in 2010, say Taiwan makers

Yen-Shyang Hwang, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Friday 19 June 2009]

Taiwan-based optical disc drive (ODD) makers, in response to the offer of a Blu-ray Disc (BD) player model by US department store Sears for US$99.99, expect production costs of BD players to gradually drop to US$50 in 2010, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

The BD player model being offered by Sears for online purchase is a refurbished Magnavox RNB500MG9.

Current production costs of a BD player are about US$100, with pick-up heads and chipsets accounting for 50% and 25% respectively, the sources noted. With more and more makers of the two key components and increasing yield rates, production costs are expected to keep decreasing to a level of US$50 in 2010, the sources said.

Cameron Talks Avatar Redux, 3D, Titanic, Abyss/True Lies Blu-ray

In an interview with USA Today, James Cameron revealed that Fox is considering a theatrical rerelease of Avatar in the fall, possibly in an extended cut. This might affect the 3D Blu-ray release of the movie, although Cameron is still hoping for a fall street date. The Canadian filmmaker is highly enthusiastic about 3D, but he also warned the industry against the temptation to "put bad 3D in the marketplace." He is okay with converting 2D content to 3D but only "if it's done well" and preferably "driven by the artist." Indeed, he intends to convert Titanic to 3D for a theatrical rerelease in 2012. He also expects to start working soon on the Blu-ray release of The Abyss and True Lies.

Regarding 3D in general, Cameron said: "We've demonstrated that the 3D market is an extremely lucrative market and this is not a fad." Admittedly, the arrival of 3D TVs will change the situation once again, but he expected them to take a while to catch on because "there isn't enough content."

Cameron expects people will buy 3D TVs because of future-proofing. "If they're going to buy a 55- or 65-inch monitor they want to make a decision that they're going to feel good about three or four years from now. But right now we've got a content gap."

That lack of 3D content for the home can't be filled by movies, because "we can't make them fast enough. So it's going to have be filled by live production or near-live production." He revealed that live 3D television is relatively cheap; however, any visual effects work done in 3D gets "a significant uptick in the cost of production."

With theaters, the problem is the opposite: the industry is generating the content "but the screens weren't there." In his opinion, more 3D theater screens are needed because "now you're going to have film coming upon film coming upon film."

Cameron made a thinly-veiled jab at Warner Brothers for their 3D conversion of Clash of the Titans, thinking they could do in eight weeks what took several years for the Avatar team. "If people put bad 3D in the marketplace," Cameron quipped, "they're going to hold back or even threaten the emerging of 3D. People will be confused by differences in quality." The audience doesn't know if there is something wrong with the glasses, the TV or the production.

When asked if existing films should be converted to 3D, Cameron was in favor, but if it's done well. "I think it should be driven by the artist," he opined. If the director is no longer alive, the people that own the library have the right to do it, "particularly if they own the rights to all media." However, not all content can be converted to 3D economically. And "if you use some automated process or some cost-effective process for that type of programming its going to look like crap. It's like colorization looked like crap." At any rate, converted films can't look as good as if you shot it in 3D. "Think of it as sort of 2.8D," he illustrated. Regarding the time needed for a 3D conversion, Cameron guessed that six months to a year were needed "to do it right."

A 3D version of Titanic is in the cards for a release in spring of 2012, 100 years after the sailing of the ship.

As to the burning question of when Avatar is coming out on 3D Blu-ray, he said: "We're not officially announcing it right now but I'm hoping for fall." A new development is that the movie might be rereleased this fall, as there might be untapped demand for the movie in theaters because it lost many 3D screens when Alice in Wonderland opened. He and the studio are talking about putting in additional footage. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there are about 10-12 minutes of extra scenes which were cut relatively late and should be ready to add to a possible extended cut: one scene has to do with Jake Sully's avatar proving himself to the Na'vi people; the other involves a native festival during which tribe member Tsu'tey gets drunk.

In other news, during the Samsung launch event, James Cameron was asked about his future plans. Cameron confirmed that, apart from the 3D Titanic project, his other projects this year involved bringing The Abyss and True Lies to Blu-ray. That doesn't mean that both or any of those movies will be released during 2010, but at least work is going to begin on them this year.

Gladiator Anniversary Blu-ray Delayed

Just a week after announcing Gladiator: 10th Anniversary Edition , the Germany branch of Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that this Blu-ray release has been postponed. The studio has not given a new date, or any reasons for the delay, although it's been speculated that it might have been moved to the fall, to tie in with the home video release of Robin Hood.

Makers of Avatar Unveil Blu-ray Launch

Release details

As previously reported, Avatar will be available on Blu-ray on April 22. The release will not include any supplemental features - only the film and corresponding menu, utilizing the disc's entire storage space in order to provide the highest quality optimal picture and sound. "We wanted the best presentation of any film in the history of the Blu-ray and DVD formats," said Landau. "Our launch into the home in April will allow fans to return to Pandora again and again."

During the press conference, it was revealed that 20th Century Fox is foregoing any trailers or advertising. "The Blu-ray is going to be pure movie", summed up Landau. Half-jokingly, James Cameron said that he has an unwritten deal with Fox, according to which "any time one of my movies makes more than a billion dollars we leave all the crap trailers off". He admitted, "I can't stand them any more than you can."

Cameron confirmed that the Blu-ray release would have an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 (or 16:9), which he considers the "highest and best for this movie." The movie was finished in 16:9, so for the Blu-ray they went to that master, without any pan-and-scan or blow-up. Cameron explained that that "little bit of extra frame" enhances the sense of height, especially in the flight sequences. He clarified that he loves the scope ratio compositionally, but he fell in love with the movie in 16:9 and prefers to watch it in this aspect ratio.

Although the press conference was focused on the upcoming April release, Jon Landau also commented on the November special edition, which will have added-value content, including a "full filmmaker's journey" and branching video.

Avatar Program

To bridge the gap between the April and November releases, Fox is launching the interactive "Avatar Program." Through a unique code found inside the Avatar Blu-ray/DVD, consumers can register at avatarmovie.com and gain exclusive access to first-look bonus materials, special content and money saving offers (reportedly, registered users will receive an e-coupon good towards the purchase of the future special-edition Blu-ray of Avatar.

Additionally, only registered fans will be able to adopt one of the one million trees being planted on behalf of Earth Day and receive a virtual hometree they can locate on a map to see where it's actually planted (see below).

Other Avatar digital initiatives include:

-Pandorama: Via a computer's webcam users can immerse themselves into the world of Pandora, inserting themselves into different locations from the movie and interacting with the elements in each; users can snap postcards and share amongst friends only at Pandorama.

-Pandorapedia: The official guide to the world of Pandora and James Cameron's Avatar, fans enter a world beyond imagination with hundreds of facts on Pandora that can be accessed online.

-Immersive Trailer: The first-ever interactive trailer allows fans to click on any part of the video to explore detail frame-by-frame and in-context "hot spots" that will offer meticulous information on characters, locations and more.

-Interactive Desktop Wallpaper: Instant access to all things Avatar including newsfeeds, videos, social network updates and exclusive content that is updated automatically right on your desktop.
Blue goes green

Taking the Avatar message of conservation and ecological harmony, the studio and Earth Day Network, together with various organizations worldwide, will pledge to plant one million trees in 15 different countries by the end of 2010.

"I am pleased to have the opportunity to share the environmental messages from Avatar through the efforts during the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day and with Earth Day Network," said James Cameron." Earth Day Network's commitment and actions to promote a healthy, sustainable planet go hand-in-hand with the themes of Avatar."

"Avatar sends a universal message about the danger of exploiting our natural resources and brings to the forefront of the global consciousness the need to protect our planet and humanity, said Kathleen Rogers, President, Earth Day Network. "We hope this commitment from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to plant one million trees, will inspire others to stand up against climate change for Earth Day."

More Details of Alien Anthology Blu-ray Surface

German site Bluray-disc.de has received an advance review copy of Minority Report (which is distributed in Europe by 20th Century Fox) to find that it opens with a short teaser for the upcoming Blu-ray edition of the Alien Anthology. After the extended tagline "In space no one can hear you scream – but on Blu-ray they can," it is revealed that the Anthology will consist of the movies Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection.

Additionally, according to the print edition of the UK movie magazine Empire, this release is being produced by Charles De Lauzirika, who is behind the BD releases of most of the movies directed by Sir Ridley Scott, including the monumental five-disc Blade Runner. De Lauzirika said that, while the Quadrilogy DVD was already very comprehensive, this Anthology Blu-ray set will blow it out of the water, with new extras and commentaries. Also, a new sound mix has been done for the extended edition of Alien 3, which involved bringing back some of the cast to reloop their dialogue.

Blu-ray Sales Still Booming

Sales of Blu-ray Discs are up again; almost double those of last year.

Another week, another sales record. While DVD sales are down 10 percent from last year, Blu-ray sales are up to $45 million. That’s 89.17 percent over last year’s numbers; nearly twice the amount as last year.

Blu-rays still don’t make up the bulk of sales, but they account for an impressive 16 percent. DVD revenue still sits at an impressive $236.73 million. One area of note is that the increase in Blu-ray sales didn’t make up for the decrease in DVD sales. Packaged media in general was down 2.27 percent.

We’re past the format wars and past the “Will Blu-ray survive?” phase, so it’s hard to get really excited about sales numbers. There’s no one around nay-saying, so all we can really do is sit back and rest comfortably in the fact that more and more people are enjoying real high definition content.

Star Wars Blu-ray Set in the Works
Posted April 17, 2010 08:10 PM by Juan Calonge

20th Century FoxDuring a panel at the C2E2 comic convention in Chicago, Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm's Director of Content Management and Head of Fan Relations, stated that the company has been working on a Star Wars Blu-ray set. "We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material", said Sansweet.

Sansweet didn't give a date, but he said " it won't be in the too distant future."

The Digital Bits, quoting industry sources, says that Lucasfilm "tentatively plans the official Blu-ray release to happen in October 2011." Obviously, with the Alien Anthology coming later this year, a 2010 release of Star Wars can be safely ruled out, and considering that A New Hope opened theatrically in May 1977, late 2011 would be a natural choice for a 35th Anniversary Edition Anthology.

Avatar Producer Talks Ultimate Edition Blu-ray

During a recent sneak preview of the Blu-ray of Avatar, producer Jon Landau revealed some more details of the ultimate edition that will come out in November. This four-disc edition will include a brand-new two-hour documentary on making Avatar, as well as unused additional scenes from the movie, which Weta Digital is now working on.

The additional scenes involve the Na'vi school run by Dr. Augustine (Sigourney Weaver), and Jake's training as a Na'vi.

Many of the bonus features in the ultimate edition will appear in the intervening months through the Avatar Program at avatarmovie.com using a unique code found inside the Avatar Blu-ray/DVD.

Avatar is also reopening in IMAX 3D in select cities this weekend.

Whoa bro, you're a SW purist pala getting all the films since the time of VHS....two tumbs up! ;)They might release this SW series with a 6-disc set & add in another 2 or 3 discs loaded with all the bonus, extras, etc... expect to pay at least $130?  :o

Hopefully they may come up with two separate boxset collections: Episode 1-3 & Episode 4-6 and pricing is cheaper than the LOTR Trilogy boxset $64 each. ;D

Avatar Blu-ray Sells 1.5m, Breaks First-Day Sales Record

According to Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke, quoting sources from 20th Century Fox, the Blu-ray edition of Avatar has sold 1.5 million units in the US and Canada during its first-day and has thus "blown away" the record for first-day Blu-ray sales, until now held by The Dark Knight, which had sold 600,000 units in December 9, 2008.

Note that neither Netflix nor Redbox are stocking Avatar yet, as both rental companies recently signed agreements with Fox to delay availability of titles from the studio for 28 days. Blockbuster, on the other hand, is.

Avatar Already Top-selling Blu-ray Ever

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that the Blu-ray edition of James Cameron's Avatar  had sold 2.7 million units by Sunday afternoon, thus surpassing in four days the lifetime sales of the previous top-selling Blu-ray, The Dark Knight, which took over a year to sell 2.5 million units. Overall, Avatar has sold 6.7 million copies on packaged media.

The title has similarly smashed sales records in France, Germany and Japan, where around 60% of sales were for the Blu-ray.

Keith Feldman, general manager and exec VP of international for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, said: "The overwhelming day one sales in key international markets — such as France and Germany — confirm the strength and vibrancy of the market, as well as the overseas appetite for high-definition product in the home."

According to the studio, Avatar has sold more copies in a single day in grocery and drug stores than The Dark Knight did in those outlets over its entire lifetime. The title is driving the sale of Blu-ray players at Best Buy.

Some Avatar buyers still cannot play their Blu-rays

'Quantum of Solace' Definitive Edition DVD coming this July

As director Marc Forster previously pointed out, the release of "Quantum of Solace" on DVD and Blu-Ray last year was just the first round and fans should expect a double-dip release later.

That time has now come with news that a 'Definitive Edition' two-disc DVD of Daniel Craig's second outing as James Bond is being scheduled for release on 28th July 2010.

The new souped-up edition will also feature lenticular packaging.

As with the first release, Fox will distribute the updated title.

There is no word yet on what the special features will be, but fans should expect cast & crew commentaries (missing from the first release) as well as additional behind-the-scenes content.

Perhaps the most interesting possibility though, is the inclusion of the original ending of the film that Forster cut for theatrical release. In it, Bond is seen to confront Mr White and the shadowy Guy Haines at a Quantum-owned mansion near London.

Avatar Sells 6.2 Million Copies on Blu-ray Worldwide

According to Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke, Avatar has sold 6.2 million copies on Blu-ray in its first three weeks on shelves, "more than double the industry standard for the high-definition format." James Cameron's epic is now the top-selling Blu-ray release of all time worldwide, and it has "no sign of slowing down."

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Blu-ray 3D)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the release of the first Blu-ray 3D title to be sold individually in the US: the CG animated adventure Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. It will be available "at select retailers" from June 22 (yes, less than two weeks from now), timed with the upcoming launch of Sony Electronics' 3D capable HDTVs and Blu-ray players.

The BD will also feature 3D sneak peeks of Open Season and Monster House, also coming soon to Blu-ray 3D.

A 2D high definition version of the film will be included for viewing on existing Blu-ray players.

The 3D BD of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs will also be offered free with the purchase of Sony 3D HDTVs.

"We are thrilled to announce the first Blu-ray 3D titles from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment," said SPHE worldwide president David Bishop. "We drove the industry in Blu-ray adoption and are now leading the way with compelling 3D content for the home. The addition of 3D showcases the versatility of Blu-ray and further demonstrates why it is being adopted by the mainstream as the home entertainment format of choice."

This Blu-ray 3D was mastered at Colorworks and authored at Sony Digital Authoring Center (DAC).

'Alien Anthology' Officially Announced and Detailed for Blu-ray

All four films in the classic sci-fi franchise are headed to Blu-ray this October!
20th Century Fox is working on the 'Alien Anthology' box set for a Blu-ray bow on October 26.

This six-disc set contains about 60 hours of special features and over 12,000 images, including material from the legendary early 1990s LaserDisc release, the "Legacy" release and the Quadrilogy DVDs and have been "reinvigorated for an intense Blu-ray high-definition viewing experience."

New content includes original screen tests of Sigourney Weaver prior to filming the original Alien, unseen deleted scenes, and the previously unseen original cut of "Wreckage and Rage: The Making of Alien3," and the "MU-TH-UR Mode," an interactive feature enabling easy access to all content on the discs.
The 6-disc set will contain the four films with 1080p video, DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtracks, and full contents are as follows:
