Revamped my first post for a more chronological narration of my history with HT :)

I'm liking the Pioneer DV-420 already. No problems with the Harmony Remote, multi-region (as expected).

Hi guys!

Need your advice sana. I have 2 planned upgrades this year:

1. a PS3 (hopefully by January); and
2. a receiver. I currently have an Onkyo 494. I'm thinking of getting the 508 or the 608 or any of its counterparts in competing brands.

Considering my set-up of Onkyo, Mission M72 (fronts), M7C1 (center) and M30i (rear) plus Velo CH-10, tama ba na receiver ang palitan ko? Or do I improve my speakers, especially the fronts and center?

i would get a newer receiver. onkyo din if you like the house sound. may improvement din yan. biggest effect on the sound since you already have good speakers. 608 is good but you might want to step up to the 708 so you have multeq. this will make your speakers sound better in the room along with the sub (vs 2eq which only equalizes the speakers).

ps3 - great if you play games or want to use it as an expensive bd player.

Happy new year, panyera!

Ngayon ko lang nabasa yung mga new posts mo, sister.  At any rate, pareho rin naman ang suggestion ko:

Onkyo 608 receiver + voltage regulator 2000VA.

@barrister,

Whenever I read the threads re AVRs, I get conflicting views and I end up thinking I probably don't need an AVR. Darn it.

Can I buy 2 1000 volts AVRs instead? This way, I use 2 outlets instead of just 1. Parang it's so weird to have all these devices plugged into 1 AVR and then to 1 outlet.

^ some 1000W AVR's, specifically the omni brand, only has 1 220v plug and 1 110v plug. their 1500w has 4 220v plugs and 1 110v plug. plug allotments are one of the crucial factors in determining avr type and model.

having separate avr's could be better but i prefer flicking a single switch to operate most of the gears i use at the same time. hdmi pass thru requires receivers to be in stand by mode, and it helps that the receiver is connected to the same avr as that of the TV's for example.

hahaha! been debating about this for the past 2 months. dedicated BD player or PS3?

ps3. not unless stand alone players cost only 3k nowadays.  ;D

It's like a spare tire on a car.  Do you need a spare tire?  (a) No, as long as you don't get a flat.  (b) Yes, just in case  ;).
You don't need a voltage regulator if your power supply is stable.  But it's better to have one in case of severe voltage spikes.

Ultimately, it depends on how expensive you gears are.  I wouldn't bother connecting an iPod dock/alarm clock to a voltage regulator, but I would if it's a Plasma TV + Blu ray + receiver.

Can I buy 2 1000 volts AVRs instead?

It's not 1000 volts, it's 1000 VA (volt-amperes).

Sometimes people say "watts" instead of "VA", because they are similar.  Watts refers to the "actual power" drawn by the appliance; "VA" refers to the "apparent power".  "VA" is used for determining specs for wire sizes and circuit breaking.  (Don't ask me to make any more sense out of that; I don't understand it either ;D)

Can I buy 2 1000 volts AVRs instead? This way, I use 2 outlets instead of just 1. Parang it's so weird to have all these devices plugged into 1 AVR and then to 1 outlet.

Sure, but that's not necessary.  It's safe to connect to 1 wall outlet as long as the voltage regulator's capacity is sufficient for all appliances connected to it.

I say use one voltage regulator so you don't unnecessarily complicate an already complicated HT system.

Here's how my set-up looked like when I woke up this morning:

Note that there is very little shelf space over my 6-year old receiver.

In anticipation of a receiver upgrade (hopefully by midyear), and a PS3, I decided to re-design the shelves. So now it looks like this:

Not as good IMHO. But more workable. Need to have to portions re-painted and polished:

Very practical. And you can opt to repartition the other 2 shelves once you've decide where to put your receiver. Sources such as BD/DVD players and NMTs doesn't require much headroom for vertical clearance unlike the new design of receivers.  ;D

Very nice, Meg.  :) :)

Suggestion lang -- Pagawa ka ng small stand for the center speaker so that it is just below the TV. That should help in the clarity of the dialogue kasi it raises the tweeter to around ear height and it provides some distance between the speaker and the shelf (otherwise, you get "boundary interference" which is not good).

@Mark,

Hmm...sige, will try to figure out how to put a stand for the center speaker.

@all,

Thanks! Most of my friends and family don't understand my fascination with HT. It's only here in PinoyDVD that I can post all these things and know that the people who read my post will understand exactly why I'm so happy I have new shelves or a PS3 or an AVR  ;D ;D great support group!

My planned receiver upgrade is officially on hold  :( In the meantime, I will have to content myself with relatively more minor upgrades.

Just to recapitulate, my current set-up is as follows:

Mission M73 (fronts)
Mission M7C1 (center)
Mission M30 (rears)
Velo sub
Onkyo 494

Recently saw an M7C2 center being sold sa marketplace. Is it worth to upgrade my center speaker? Or no discernable difference?
