Magkaiba lang sila ng design. Both have general advantages and disadvantages. Saka may magandang Class D amp and may maganda ding Class AB amp, may panget na Class D amp and may panget din na Class AB amp.
A decade ago, Class AB ang default choice for sound quality tapos Class D ang choice for power and efficiency. Because of the development in Class D amplification, good designs can now post performance numbers comparable to high end Class AB amplification. Switching noise, bandwidth and HF interaction issues had been largely addressed. Dumadami na ang Class D amplifiers sa high end audio because of this.
Simpler and well-understood ang usual causes ng poor performance ng Class AB amps, so most amp makers build their own discrete Class AB circuitry. Dahil mas maselan ang Class D design (saka most of the time ICs ang gamit), the majority of makers end up sourcing proven modules na lang from suppliers which they integrate into their design.
Andyan din ang less common Class A, Class B, Class G and Class H designs. Di sila common kasi Class A masyado wasteful sa kuryente at mainit, Class B efficient sana pero madalas medyo mataas ang distortion, Class G and Class H hindi ganun kaworthwhile kung di naman high power application (like sa pro audio and subwoofers).
