Obviously Kobe is still at the top of his game.  He can simply turn it on whenever he wants.

2.  Odom tried early early on to assert his speed advantage over the Spurs big men, but was unsuccessful.   Oberto and Horry did a good job putting up a brick wall, resulting in numerous missed lay-ups by Odom.

That is why I don't know why Pop decided to go small. Spurs play became predictable too when they went to Duncan in their every possession in the fourth.

Today the Lakers did what is needed to beat the Spurs. They beat them as a team. Hats off to Kobe Bryant. He played this game w/ a lot of maturity and patience. He didnt charge like a bull when they're down by 20 but he let his teammates go w/ the flow of the game thus boosting their confidence that resulted to their great comeback in this game. Credit should also go to Phil Jackson for shuffling his inexperienced 2nd unit and just let them play hard. With this come from behind win i'm sure the Laker's 2nd unit will be a lot more confident in the suceeding games to come.

Black Mamba just proved why he's MVP.
Led his team to a comeback not jsut by scoring but involving teammates as well (passes to Gasol and Odom).

Manu Ginobili was a none factor in today's game. He was harrassed all game long by the Laker's defense on him. He wasnt able to create and dictate the tempo he wanted. If the Laker continue to shut him down, then the series is over.

1.  The Spurs were very successful in their pick and roll offense early on.   They went away from it in the 2nd half, relying mainly on Duncan's post isolation.

that's because phil changed the way they defended that play. with sasha single-covering manu (and doing a heck of a job with that), the lakes were able to be more aggressive in defending the high p&r. frenchie got confused in the 2nd half on that play, and pau started to be less tentative in stepping up to duncan.

Quote
2.  Odom tried early early on to assert his speed advantage over the Spurs big men, but was unsuccessful.   Oberto and Horry did a good job putting up a brick wall, resulting in numerous missed lay-ups by Odom.

i've been silent on odom, mainly because i find him to be a tease. he's too inconsistent for my taste.

3.  Vujacic is an underrated defender.   He was mainly responsible for limiting Manu Ginobili to 3-13 shooting.

Manu Ginobili was a none factor in today's game. He was harrassed all game long by the Laker's defense on him. He wasnt able to create and dictate the tempo he wanted. If the Laker continue to shut him down, then the series is over.

manu was shut down by sasha plus the lakers played great team defense...

yeah! sasha was my mvp of the game. his defense enabled the vital adjustments the home team made against that darn high pick-and-roll. it must be said, though, that manu is not 100%; he jammed his ankle against the suns and has been playing hurt. plus, there's a reason pop likes him off the bench -- the energy of el contusión drops off significantly after 30 mins. of p.t.

5.  Kobe Bryant must be aggressive early on.  He doesnt have to dominate in scoring, but he cant do a passive 2 point first half against the Spurs again.   They are too smart and disciplined to let a 20 point lead vanish again.

agree. mamba has to be more consistent throughout the game. he's courting danger with this switch-on/switch-off approach. of course, when he's on, he's really on.

hey, how about that staples crowd! haven't seen them this energetic since the conference finals against sacto in the three-peat era.

still, i'm not going to count out the spurs, just yet. expect pop to get them to swing the ball around better to get extra space and better perimeter shots, among other adjustments.

Yup.   The Spurs know how to play him.   He was big in the Utah series coz the Utah big men doesnt defend on their feet.   What I do like about him though, is he doesnt settle for jumpers anymore.

If he doesnt get any tempo offensively in the series, I do expect him to have double digits in rebounding.   I hope yesterday's game will be his weakest one.  Ditto with Fisher, who was 1-9 shooting, mostly on hurried jumpers and horrible fishing expedition on drives.

Lakers heard a lot of boos in the third when they were down 20.

about the boos...we hardly heard that before, either!

back to the players:

about fisher, he played mostly good d, but yeah, he has to get going offensively. in terms of on court/off court rating, fisher is +31.5 in the playoffs, highest on the team, bryant is only 2nd at +15.2. fish was -7 yesterday.

and to underscore the gamble that phil made on farmar and vujacic in the second half, those 2 were the lowest so far, a combined  -50.2. yesterday they were the highest, a combined +36.0.

on the spurs side, finley has been the highest at +11.0, ginobili second at +8.3. yesterday they were a combined -40.0. they were clearly off and have to get going soon, for the spurs' sake.

It also helped that the Spurs collapsed. Very uncharacteristic of the Spurs to give up 20.

maybe the loss from their home court might push them to get better on the road since they can no longer rely on winning at home to win the east.

I agree. They must learn how to win on the road if they want to win the championship.
