Random Thoughts: Game 1 2008 Finals
1. Paul Pierce, ala Willis Reed, returned from what it looks like a serious injury, and fueled the Celts by sinking 2 straight 3s in the end of the 3rd quarter. That was the turning point of the game. The Lakers were never the same after that.
2. If the Lakers were to lose the series because of rebounding problems, the Laker faithful will always wonder, "what if Bynum was there?". They were outrebounded in game 1, 46-33.
3. The difference between the Celtic Defense and that of the Spurs, the Celtic big men are more adept and quick in protecting the rim. That was a major factor in Kobe's 9-26 night. Allen and Posey played him tight, resulting to contested jumpers. They know they have help on their backside.
As Fisher added, Kobe has to get more shots coming off screens, rather than from isolation plays.
4. Doc Rivers outcoached Jackson in this one. The "protect the rim strategy" was impressive, but also didnt allow the Lakers to get hot in the perimeter. He also got points from the 1 guard position, courtesy of Rondo and Cassell.
5. The injury to Paul Pierce looks more serious than it seems. According to reports, its pretty sore right after game. Adrenaline prompted him to return, and it resulted in a win. He has 48-72 hours to heal. I do hope so, Im for fair match-up, even if injuries are part of the game.
