Saw the video of the actual skit in the concert....Vice Ganda no question was laughing and enjoying at the expense of Jessica Soho.  He was not holding anything back both in words and actions.  It is clear he was there to humiliate the well respected journalist.  Talagang below the belt.

I think there's a time and place for insult humor. Para sa akin, it's not funny because it's cheap and at the expense of someone who didn't really deserve it so it does come off as bullying.

true, i have watched jose and wally (tama ba names?  taga eat bulaga) before.  minumura ang mga audience.
pero IMO dapat sa comedy bar lang ginagawa ang ganyan klaseng jokes.

I don't think it was the person referred to in the joke that caused the uproar. It was the theme of the joke. Rape isn't something to joke about.

I saw bits of the vice ganda concert, and some parts were funny, but a lot of parts were booooring. The nancy binay=sunog, lazy writing.  the bold star part is stale, wala nang nagbo-bold ngayon no? The ms universe segment, mas luma at recycled na from other comedy bar material. Mas offensive yung ginawa nilang sex object si paolo avelino. ( Hindi accurate yung nilagay na word balloons/ captions na screencap sa image na naka-post sa taas) It reinforces the sterotype of gays as sex-starved predatory people who will pounce on any man. If a guy did that to a girl on any show, baka nakulong na yun.

I disagree. I think you can totally make a joke about rape. I think you can make a joke about anything. It all depends on how you write it and deliver it and the context of the joke. It takes REAL comedic talent to make jokes out of sensitive topics like rape, death, war, pedophilia, murder, etc.

15 rape jokes that work. :)

I so agree. I think you've hit the nail on the head. Pikon lang talaga ang madaming Pinoy. It's the very same reason why a lot of journalists are killed -- pikon lang din yung mga exposed politicians.

That joke about Soho was lame and really not funny. But is it really "below the belt"? American comics are far more provocative with their material and its very rarely that they get this kind of backlash. Sarah Silverman, Louis CK and Daniel Tosh told rape jokes  (Tosh's rape joke was even about his sister) quite successfully. I'm not defending Vice Ganda, who I think is way overrated and very rarely funny, but maybe we should also look at the mob mentality that seems to grip Filipinos whenever there's an issue that comes out.

^I agree.

Vice Ganda's joke wasn't funny NOT because he mentioned rape and not because it made fun of Jessica Soho but rather it's simply a cheap, poorly thought-out joke.

Ang isang anggulo kasi e nasa dos si vg at siete si js at dapat naisip nya yun sa simula pa lang. Kung willie vs joey parang ok lang since same line pero a sarcastic comedian vs a respectable media personality at may posisyon pa. Feeling on a roll kasi kaya parang anything goes.

In a way you're actually right, Praktikal. I noticed that the first people to react about that joke and called it offensive were GMA employees. I have a ton of friends in GMA and when this issue exploded all of them were on the warpath on Facebook and all of the posts, strangely enough, ended with this "please re-share/retweet hanggang makarating sa kanya." It was one sentence, repeated over and over again in various posts, no deviations in the way it was constructed or written. I leave it up to you guys to think about what it could mean. :)

In my opinion this is just another manifestation of the network wars.

but sir mel in this aspect cultural setting is setting in. The kind of environment and culture in the US takes too many things that are taboo to some people as plain and normal to them. surely they can make jokes about really sensitive things to us people but im sure if they do it here it will leave a bad taste as well to many pinoys.

having said so, indeed the mob mentality is more at work as this has been the case naman sa maraming pag kakataon sa maraming pinoy, case in point issue with charice eh ang dami namang ganung sitwasyon ang personalidad pero sa kanya parang affected lahat.

and like what you and praktikal said, 2 and 7 against each other, on a positive note though, this should tame vice ganda a bit, ang daming blind items and pangit na usapin sa hindi nyang magandang ugali

on another note, di ba nagiging Big Talk na tayo, balik na tayo sa tsimis ulit hehehehe.

I remember Robin Williams, in his Live on Brodway 2002 standup concert, joking about the then paranoid-level security in US airports following 9/11. Mimicking a young boy getting frisked, he says:

"What are you doing? You're not a priest, let go of me!"

I nearly wet myself laughing.

Oh my effing God. I can imagine the mass aneurysms that would hit the Pinoy audience and media personalities all over the country if a local version of, say, the Comedy Central Roasts were held/shown here. Lisa Lampanelli would probably be lynched.

Speaking of - God, do I miss Greg Giraldo (who once described having sex with Joan Rivers as "like titty-f***ing a crocodile'.)

God, those roasts were BRUTAL. I watched a roast for Robin Quivers (Howard Stern's co-host in his radio show) and they made jokes about the fact that she was sexually abused by her father. It really crossed the line at certain points, but no one complained about being offended, least of all Quivers herself.

It really boils down to cultural differences, in my opinion.
