Anyone here who's using DacMagic? I'm planning to use this for my my htpc together with Azur 550A but I've read a lot of bad reviews about it (DacMagic) that's why I'm looking for a better alternative.

Slightly OT:
I'm torn between NAD C326BEE and Azur 550A. Who do you pick between the two?

Thanks.  :)

Cambridge for me.

I'm also using my CA 740c as external DAC. So far i'm very satisfied. I get the best of both worlds. A very good CDP and i can also utilize the internal DAC as well via digital inputs of the 740c.

You're in a Cambridge thread, so Cambridge.  ;D

Honestly, the 550A is a great amp. I find the build quality exceptional for the price. It has significantly more headroom than the 540A (despite the same ratings), and carries a more pleasant tonal balance. It also fixed both of the 540A's known quirks (the aggressive CAP5 intervention and the tendency for channel imbalance at lower volumes). Cambridge amps are a bit harder to partner than NAD amps (because of the fast and relatively cool sound), but the results can be quite rewarding in the end.

NAD amps are also excellent options (and they're often very conservatively-rated), but the BEE models seem to have marked emphasis on certain frequencies (the first three octaves and the last two octaves) when coupled with some common speakers. I think they match perfectly with PSB speakers though (they belong to the same group afterall). I don't find the C326BEE as ultimately-revealing as the 550A, but it does throw a plump sound with a wide sound stage (and I know a lot of people like this).

I suggest listening to both before deciding. Good luck. :)

Which bad reviews are you talking about? The power brick issue? I understand that they have rectified that problem.

Instead of the 550C + Dacmagic, you can check out the 740C or the 840C. Both can be used as DACs, as they have SPDIF inputs.

If you're going the NAD route, the C565BEE CD player has the same functionality.

as for external DAC, besides the DACMagic, you also have the Tube Magic from maveric Audio...

just a thought... :)

I'll go for 550A. CAs are known for their clinical sound which is one of the characteristics I was looking for. The details are top notch. The Azur x50 series produce clear highs but at the same time has that tonal balance which you will not find tiring to listen to, of course, when matched with a good pair of speakers.

Of course, this is just me. [Love your own] :)

Thanks for the all the inputs.

Actually, I am considering getting  nad 326 but because I posted in the wrong thread, I might go with 550a instead.  ;D

Yes, the hums and the overheating of the power brick.

740c and 840c are good options but because of limited budget they are not in my list right now. Maybe...just maybe...if my budget permits. Just a follow up question, which dac is better between DacMagic and 740c/840c?

Thanks.

The 740C uses the same DAC chips as the DACMagic. However, the 740C has a better resampler, power supply, and output stage. Transport-wise, the 740C's jitter levels are truly very very low (I can't say the same about external transports).

The 840C has everything the 740C has, but it has dual AD1955 DACs (instead of dual WM8740 DACs), true balanced outputs, and a capacitorless signal path on top.

If you factor everything, the DACMagic ends up as a standalone DAC that is more comparable to the 640C / 650C players.

i think they're the same as they are from the same company. somebody told me na 25% off ung cambridge audio products last month sa 5th ave, laki sana ng natipid mo. if you could extend your budget a little further go for the 740c you will enjoy it for years... :)

It's just a simple system. No preamp yet. I'm just proud that a 3 watt amp could sound descent.
