Author Topic: Toshiba stubbornly launches the un-Blu-ray, XD-E500 DVD player (Read 25697 times)

what are your usual setup? direct connection to tv or connect the hdmi to avr first then out to tv> which one would look better in terms of picture quality> pls advice thanks.

the right way imho is to connect it directly to the panel's hdmi input for unadulterated signal, but using the avr as switcher has its merits too. most panels has two hdmi inputs, with a dvd upscaler, maybe a ps3 or bluray player, your panel's hdmi inputs can be used up quite fast. hence video switching through avrs. if ever there will be degradation using the avr to pass through video signal, i would say its close nothing.

so for me, i would use the avr connection as this is one of the reasons we use an avr (besides audio reproduction), is to use its multiple inputs for easy and convenient video switching.

good to know man... i was contemplating on whether the the upscaler of the receiver or the player would be used to produce the picture.. and i don't know which one does it better.. thanks again.

really depends, the best way is to test it. since the xde's upscaling has been likened to the oppos, then it should be good. but its still best to try your avr's upscaling capabilities. if ever the xde does better, you can still use the avr for switching by turning the avr's upscaling off so it only does pass through.

thanks man... as for the audio? many of the users here use pcm? i read in the manual that if you have an avr that has dts decoder then use the bitstream instead?which ones better of the two? i had issues with the audio im not sure if its regarding this audio or an avr problem..

for audio, i think it will be best if you use the receiver to decode all surround sound, may it be the classic dolby d, dts or the newer hd surround format like dolby tru hd or dts ma.

for classic surround sound just make sure your receiver have either a digital audio coax input or an optical audio input. both connections will output the surround sound. but for hd surround sound, this will only output through hdmi. but if its the xde we are talking about, i think the connections will be:

video:

xde hdmi out ---> receiver hdmi in
receiver hdmi out ---> to lcd/plasma hdmi in

audio:

xde coax/optical out ---> receiver coax/optical in ---> surround sound output through speakers

thanks man.. but hdmi itself could cover both the audio and the video right? or do you suggest i connect the digital audio too? nwy abt the xde audio.. my connection is thru hdmi and yeah i let the receiver handle both vid and audio.. bt was just wondering about the option in xde which is bitstream and pcm. would it still be used when i connect the xde to the receiver.. i dnt have the option off as i rmmbr..

if you choose bitstream then you let the receiver do the encoding, this is when you will see the receiver display the words dolby d or dts for whatever encode the disc is playing. but by choosing pcm, the xde will output audio in multi-channel lossless pcm format, but what you will see in your receiver's display is multichannel (regardless of what you choose in the dvd audio menu; dts or dolby). both will work, but most people will choose bitstream so that its the receiver that does the audio decoding.

to those who own this unit, is it true that it has a subpar performance when playing p*dvds?

that could be a deal breaker for me as, i have to admit, majority of my movies are jack sparrow sourced. i won't go into details as it might already fall under banned topics.

just a confirmation of this would be really appreciated as i'll be getting my player this weekend.

it actually depends on the quality of ur jack sparrow dvds. i tried some of my jack sparrow dvds ( ung maganda packaging, may slipcase) on the XDE and projected it using AX200 to a 90in screen, its ok/acceptable naman. i just set the XDE to auto not 1080p/24p coz at that setting, that would be asking too much of the jack sparrow dvd.

may noise ka rin minsan yung xde ko...

pag try ok 1080p 24p nag fflicker na yung tv.

and ayaw gumana ng digital out. di madecode yung dts.
kagabi ko pa kinakalikot ayaw gumana.
i'm using belden coax cable...

pano pala i-off yung hdmi audio?

saka pag minsan press ko eject, ayaw mag eject ng cd. kelangan pa press ulit.

sino pwede magpahiram ng ibang dvd upscaler? gusto ko lang makita difference... =)

as promised. images from good quality jack sparrow dvds using Auto setting of XDE 500.

too bad i cant give yet a comparison pic using the original DVDs of LOTR. my bro borrowed it..

but may difference talaga. w/c means that if ur impressed with this screenshot from jack sparrow dvds... den imagine what the original ones look like..
