My cousin already bought one while i did not. The reason: I question the claim of built-in decoders.

The manual said there are no dolby decoders either. and i'm pretty much sure there's no HDCD decoder as well (which is what i'm after). The manual said it is HDCD "compatible"... well all standard CD players are HDCD compatible anyway.

however, for it's price it is UNBEATABLE even without the decoders.

just got the nextbase portable from watson's at P5.6k.  I haven't tested it myself yet, but it does not have an internal pal-ntsc converter as I asked the person who bought it for me to play several disc to test the product.

The item is really very small!!! :o :o  The picture shown above does not do it justice.  Kasing laki lang siya ng lumang walkman although much heavier.

Also, the manual indicates that there are two models available, the mdv1-2 pictured above and the mdv1-5 with additional 3 rca plugs for video and L-R audio.  It seems that they imported the first model as this is the one seen in all the places where nextbase is sold.

I hope to test it tonight.  6 months warranty, btw.

voj  ;)

p.s. bili na kayo t-shirt para may pambayad naman ako nito. HaHaHa.  ;D

Vojdiaz It seems that the MDV-1-5 is the older model which has the audio-video RCA plugs.

Albino The Composite outs (RCA) are incorporated in a three level plug, much like the ones you'll see in those ubiquitous Mini-Discman sized VCD players being sold by the China Reds in Quiapo.

Watson's Camera Shop is located at the corner of P.Gomez and Hidalgo St., the main landmark is the SM Quiapo. ;)

slimjim,

i think its due to its compact size kaya siya umiinit. ;) i have the older model DMV4 and it also heats up. what i did to solve this problem is that i elevated the console para may air flow sa ilalim(dun lang kasi ang mga air vents nya e) at tinatapatan ko ng fan. :D

I *might* head for MCS today to check this one out...

I'm no audiophile/videophile and I only have a small screen TV... I think this unit will suit me well... (I might even get this at MCS since I find it really inconvenient to head for quiapo.

Just one question to current owners:  Is this model similar to the very much recommended NestBase in the other thread?  Is this model not "picky" (meaning will it play *ALL* kinds of DVD's regardless of region)?

Thanks in advance!

my mdv1 seems to be able to play anything i put in it. i've yet to encounter a disc that it can't read. :)

i have a question for the others who also own one... the "preferences" in the setup screen is grayed out. is this normal or should i replace it?

I think every small, portable device heats up faster than its big brothers. It's got something to do with the size and processing power of the smaller components.

phantom's right. You need to elevate the unit to let air flow at the bottom. tapat mo sa fan or aircon vent  :) Like what I did for my Aiwa xddw1, we were able to marthon 12 non-stop hours of "24" on my little dvd porta player  :) nakatapat lang siya sa fan throughout, slightly elevated.

bought one of those 3M rubber footing watchamacallits  to elevate my nextbase. ;)

i got the older portable dvm9 model and i am confirming: it is mapili and not recommended.

bought Evelyn dvd, ayaw tumugtog pero it will play sa console dvd players ko. further, and i have previously discussed it, ayaw na ayaw nitong portable ang mag skip forward or rewind. gusto niya tuloy tuloy ang play. once you stop or pause it, lalo na if frequently, it will hang and freeze.

i dont recommend the dvm9 porta. i dont know if this bug has been resolved by the newer nestbase porta. but personally, avoid portables if you can. kahit portable DISCMAN's nga, sirain, noticed?

sincerely,

Hey! No fair! Unless of course you were only pertaining to the dvm9 line-up. Were you? And not on portables in general?

I've had a portable Aiwa DVD player for over 8 months now and it hasn't given me any of the problems you outlined here.

But, unless you were just being specific to the nextbase models, then please accept my apologies  ;D

hi guys,

1. no offense meant, but yes, i admit i did generalized when i said "most/all portables, even discmans, are sirain". I have had sorry experiences with them. previously i had two aiwa discmans that broke down on its own. and to think i am VERY masinop with my electronic gadgets. then i turned to jvc and sony discmans. still sira na lang bigla. And when you bring them for repair, the rechnicians in the CASA mismo tells you "bili ka na lang gn bago kasi service labor fee pa lang 1/2 of a new one na, walang parts pa iyan involved ha"

kaya ako ngayon medyo ilang na sa portable discmans.

2. then came nextbase porta dvm9. i was going out of town, staying in hotel for a month, so i wanted a little entertainment in house so napilitan bumili. naku, i found out ayaw niya mag rewind ff, pause frequently kasi it will hang and freeze. a little disappointment na. then later on, namimili naman ng disc. the latest victims were Evelyn and Spy Kids 2 and Catch Me If you Can. kaya, nadagdagan ang disappointment ko. And the hanging/freeze issue is still there.

that is why i cannot recommend the nextbase dvm9 porta specifically, unless the new model or the newer batch has fixed this bugging issue.

peace!

sincerely,
bestbuy88

Nextbase's previous model, DMV4 has some glitches playing mp3/mpeg files recorded on DVD discs such as DVD-R/-RW.
For example, it seems to recognize the first 128MB files only in each folder, etc.

How about this new model MDV1?
Have those problems been solved?

Hi Persimmon90,

I don't think na na solve na yung issue na yun, and I havn't tried playing MP3 burned in DVDR. Alam ko packaging and interface lang ang pinagkaiba ng DMV4 and DMV1, the software seams to be the same.

Question:
Who knows how to upgrade the firmware of NEXTBASE DMV4 /DMV1? Where to download the firmware?

Thanks,
-LtCool-
