There is now a new WD TV that supports dts downmix and more.

This is different from WD TV Live.

Now I don't know if WD will still upgrade firmware of the 1st gen WD TV.

Refer to this post http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?topic=2746.0

Hmm so it looks like they will keep two (almost the same) products in the market (plus of course the WD TV mini):

- an updated WDTV with DTS downmix but no component out and networking at a cheaper price point
- and the WDTV Live with DTS downmix, component out, and networking

I guess they're doing the same thing they're doing with their MyBook external drive line--virtually the same product, the only real difference being the ports (USB, eSATA, FW400, or FW800) that are available.

It's confirmed. They have updated the original WD TV (model:WDAVN00) to WD TV generation 2 (model:WDBABF0000NBK). http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/update...ily=wdfwdtv_hd

The Gen2 WD TV appears to have upgraded hardware so that--based on online feedback from users who got the new WD TV--it can handle DTS downmix and is as fast as WD TV Live. But unlike the WD TV Live, it doesn't have networking features.

The WD TV product line is now:

1) WD TV Mini: for standard def videos
2) WD TV (gen 2): for HD media but no networking
3) WD TV Live: for HD media with networking features

The SRPs on the US site is $149.99 Live; $129.99, TV (Gen 2); and $99.99 Mini. I think that would translate here to around P6500 Live; P5500 TV; and P4500 Mini.  ;D

I agree--in the US I think the Live is going for $120. P500-P1K cheaper would be more compelling. I'm sure it will go down eventually as market forces come to play.  :)

I saw this too this afternoon. I am not sure though if it was the Gen 1 or Gen 2. But the original price was $100 and it was on sale for $75. So I guess it is the old model. DTS downmix will be nice on the old model but that is impossible.

Have you tried this homebrew firmware with your WDTV???

I'll try to play with this once i get in touch with my old WDTV...

FROM wdtvforum.com

"This application retrieves movie content from The Movie Db and generates wd_tv.jpg, info.txt (optional), and folder.jpg files in your movie directories. These directories, when read by the Western Digital WD TV, will display a full 1280x720px background image, a 180x240px thumbnail, and movie information instead of the generic WDTV movie thumbnail and background image."

Akala ko walang networking ang WDTV?  How will it retrieve the movie info from the online DB?  Di kaya for WDTV Live 'to?  Or you'll need a PC?

bro, these backgrounds and movie details resides on your movies storage device and wdtv will just retrieve these contents upon browsing your movies directories from your hard drive (iyun pagkakaintindi ko,, :D :D)..it just overwrite the generic movie thumbnail of your WDTV...

i haven't tried it yet, tonight ill try to run the custom app to my external drives

Ah, so parang PC application siya to organize your movie storage?  It will retrieve the info, and place it in the storage device which can then be displayed correctly by the WDTV custom firmware?  So dapat magkapartner ang custom firmware and PC App?

Please keep us updated sir.  Very interesting yang discovery nyo...
