all things being equal, the 31 should be better as it allows you more control over the entire frequency spectrum

+1. Only downside I can see for the 31-band would be it would be more complicated to fine-tune.

31 band 1/3 octave equalizer is more flexible but much difficult to tailor if you have very aggressive hands like mine... hehehehe...

an RTA (real time analyser) with external mic & pink noise generator might come in handy when tuning your system with your room...

my inexperienced input lang sir

With the addition of a RTA, you have to know where and how to place the lab grade mic. A FLAT frequency response is almost always not the best sounding curve.

Right now, for my installs, I mostly use digital equalizers because they are tamper-proof. DBX, Peavey,Rane, Shure, IVIE, Biamp to name a few. I think Phonic ,Behringer and Alto have such digital eq equivalent also.

alvin,

does using an EQ in the digital domain have a sonic advantage over the conventional ones?

thanks

i agree... recommended mic placement very tricky and oftentimes confusing

flat curve never sounded pleasing to my ears as well

RTA will be a visual guide where the excess bloom(s) or deep dip(s) are... a little + or - on certain parts of the spectrum takes time and patience... 'til one arrives at his/her preferred tonal balance

yup, easier said than done... though it is oftentimes fun for guys who like to explore... hehehehe

I believe so, advantages that I can think of are:

Less phase shift problems
Better and more precise control
Oftern choice between a graphic and parametric on the fly
More control over Q, often up to 1/48th octave
Less moving parts (Laptop software control)
Most important- TAMPER PROOF
