If it is SACD, the logo in the album should say so:
DSD logo (technoloy of SACD encoding)

Sample SACD albums (Chesky's records, and yes Chesky is a record label):

If it is DVD-Audio, then you should be able to check it by their label or album description:

Nice guide there, Philander. Just a cautionary note, the DSD logo also appears in many SONY CDs.  They're not SACDs.  Only their originals were remastered or recorded using DSD.

Not all SACDs are hybrid.

There are so many variations in each format.  Though SACDs can go 5.1, don't be surprised if what you get is only 5.0, no LFE information, or even 4.0, no center channel and LFE.   Also, there are a number of SACDs that are only in stereo. Not multichannel.   Recording engineers are free to utilize how many channels they want.

Also DVD-Audio comes in different encoding resolution.  Some use 96/24 or higher, others use 88/24 and a few in 48/24.  Similarly, not all are in 5.1.  But high resolution stereo is common to all.

Thanks for the correction, just to reclarify, isnt it the DSD+SBM (Direct Stream Digital + Super Bit Mapping) is the one use for encoding/recording/remastering in CD format?

Yes, that's right, but i could swear I saw the DSD logo with it.  I'll check my Sony DSD CDs again.

DSD is used to master the recorded performance.  It is then decimated to PCM when mastering the CD (for the CD layer of Hybrid SACD and stand-alone CD releases.) The single-bit 2.82mhz is easily transcoded to multi-bit PCM.  Very convenient, actually, since the 2.82Mhz DSD sampling rate is just 64 times the 44.1khz PCM sampling rate of redbook CD. Sony can call it Direct Super Bit Mapping, or whatever they like.  It's simple DSD to PCM conversion.   ;D

Yes there is also DSD logo but with SBM (DSD+SBM). I just can't find the DSD+SBM logo in the internet. hehhehe

DAW?

Wala po sanang magagalit pero most (if not ALL) of the store personnel WALA pong alam regarding HDCD, SACD, DSD, DVD-A, XRCD, HIGH Resolution, DTS-CE, etc., so I suggest ikaw na lang maghanap ikot lang ng konti sa store, then may makikita ka rin.

Sa oddysey XL megamall, pinull-out na nila yugn mga DVD-A. Meron silang few SACD records from Chesly's

Hi Guys,

I have a Marantz 4300 for over 4 years now.  Just got a mission v62 front speakers hooked up to it.  While I was watching "The Incredibles" last night, there was a loud passage and the receiver just shut off.  Volume was cranked up to -6 db.  I pressed power button to off, then turned it on again and it was okay.

I remember this happened to me before but I just did not mind it.  this time I want to inquire and ask around if this is a safety feature of Marantz.  Likewise, I just want to know if this is related to the amps heat since the distance of the amp to the top shelf is only 1-inch.

I hope you guys can help me on this.  Thanks.

I guess you're in that volume level where a current surge, such as what would happen on a transient or louder-than-average signal, would trigger the amp's current limiting protection circuit to just shut up.  That's what those circuits are there for.

sir av_phile, question lang po. is it (how true)true that the marantz sr4500(or 500 series) uses CS49400 DSP Processor? even if it uses or not, is this same dsp processor used for some high end amplifiers? thanks sir in advance :)

Bro Ronjet, I am not entirely familiar with chip parts used in preamps and amps.  So I wouldn't be able to answer you.  I have earlier read some brands sharing the same chips, especially DSP chips which have become quite a commodity.  Also some DAC, DD and DTS decoding chips have become industry standards that many brands use.  Motorola, Burr-Brown, to name a few brands at the top of my head.  So if you've come accross an article that says Marantz is sharing the same chips across its line-up, i'd take that as a marketing information. I find that believable as manufacturers would find better cost efficiencies ordering same types of chips for all their model lineups.  Afterall, there are other design factors that distinguish entry level models from flagships.  Just my thoughts.

pardon me if i am not av_phile,

cirrus logic is the maker of this chip, same company making computer graphics chips, it is not unusuall that it is used in high end amps. chipmakers make chips then come up with "standard designs" that uses their chips and then gives them to other oems, marantz in this case, so that they can sell their chips. this is true everywhere!

from what i know marantz products are designed in the states by engineers, then subcontracts japanese manufacturers, like tamura radio, which in turn subcontracts subassemblies and finaly everything is assembled in china.

manufacturing is not what it was in the old days!
That's OK, you can like or dislike anything you choose. That's the wonderful thing about the freedom

You mean Marantz 4500? The 1705 is from Denon.

It's hard to compare them powerwise. Both make good music.

I'd go Marantz. Retro look, excellent build, 7.1 and is cheaper ;D Yung nga lang from 5th Ave :P

I had the same choices before and I ended up getting the Marantz 4500. HK 130 (at the time was my second choice) was pricer and wasn't 7.1.

I'd still go for the Marantz, though it's harder to match it's Gold color with other equipment and the HK135 is much more expensive. I just hope that I don't have to deal with the after sales service of 5th ave.

Yup you can, just make sure to have good room ventilation. I use my 4500 to drive 6ohm Monitor Audios...
