A NEOPHYTE AUDIOPHILE
« on: Apr 21, 2009 at 09:28 AM »
Hello everybody! I'm new here.
I'm more of a musicphile.
I intend to buy my first audiophile speakers for listening any type of music.
I have done so many web research.
I'm on a budget but I want a bang for my money.

I am deciding between these two
Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 or Paradigm Atom V5 Bookshelf Speakers.

But I think I would prefer the 9.1 cos its only 5.5k at Spectra while Atom v5 is around 11k at Hifiplus.

The 9.1 has so many positive reviews and so with atom v5.

I will connect it first on my used mini hifi from Aiwa cos its speakers sounds bad.
But I intend to buy Rotel RA04 in the future, which is a good amplifier.

And also Marantz CD6002 in the near future.

But for now I should start first with a good pair of speakers.
Sorry I'm only for music listening, not for theater.

Guys here kindly help me decide! ;D

it really would depend on your budget... you can try auditioning both paradigm and the 9.1 and see which one you like. You might want to look at the buy and sell forum maybe you can find another pair of speakers that would fit your budget happy hunting

Hi Valiente,

I am also relatively new to audio and I completely relate to "bang for the buck".

If I may suggest, you also consider Mission M31i. I was about to buy the 9.1 myself when I heard the mission by accident. It had smoother highs and more body at the mids. Its also easier to drive at 88db @8ohms vs the 9.1 at 86db @6ohms so can be paired with more amplifier choices. Price wise, it costs a bit more at P9k but its worth every penny. I am using my M31i with a 25wpc SS surplus amp worth P2k and the sound is comparable to more expensive set-ups.

Let me know if you want to have a listen.  ;)

Cheers!

first, welcome to pdvd amigong Valiente.

mga gaano mo katagal gagamitin ang speakers? <di pa nga nabibili upgrade na agad?  ;D >

audition ka pa ibang brands. mas ok kase kung ang mabili mo e yung tipong tatagal sa iyo para iwas SARS. maaring mas mahal mong mabili pero kung tatagal naman syo -- sulit. right?

"bang for the buck" ? audition pa rin talaga ang best mong gawin. don't rely on others' opinion. hth  ;)

If you have plans of getting a Rotel ra-04 & Marantz 6002 in the near future, then I suggest you keep your money & save up for better quality speakers instead. Besides, since speakers are not electronics - then its safe to buy preowned quality speakers at lower cost pa.
Audio listening is a bit critical compared to HT - so speaker choices would be paramount to your system.

Furthermore, you might like to consider DIY speakers made by our very own DIY speaker master - Anthony. He could make you a pair of bs or fs speakers that would be comparable to major speaker brands at only 1/4 the price.

Sorry guys, if you know I'm from the province, far from Manila. So auditioning those speakers will really be expensive for me.
I only rely on the internet and I was not frustrated.
I simply read reviews.

But your advices guys are also as good as the reviews in the internet.

Im happy to be a member of this pinoydvd.com ;D

Why don't you consider the Polk Audio TSi100 or RTi A1 bookshelf speakers. They are great sounding speakers and are not too expensive. AV shop can give you a good deal.

Magkano po ba ang Polk TSi100 and RTi A1?
Is it also the same as the prices of Wharf 9.1 or Paradigm Atom v5?

The Polk Audio RTi A1 can definetly give the B&W a run for its money. The RTi series is one of the  high end series from Polk Audio.

Another vote here for the 9.1

It's worth every penny with a performance that really exceeds its cost.

Guys I think your great too, that seems your talking based on bright experiences with the 9.1.
I already assuming that a neophyte like me with limited budget must start with 9.1

Naku iho, baka ma-disappoint ka pag kinabit mo 9.1 sa mini mo.  Dapat jan malakas amp mo.  Pero ganda tumunog yang 9.1 if ever.  Meron bang better quality speaker sa 9.1 with matching amp?  Ewan ko  ;).  Suggested amp ko vintage na Denon PMA.

Bili ka nalang ng 80 to 100 watts surplus amp sa pier ( kenwood, sony, onkyo) to pair with your 9.1, o mag-9.2 ka nalang for extra bass if you cant afford a subwoofer at the moment!

dagdag ka nalang ng kaunti ang go for an entry level yamaha amp rxv-363 ;D or mag integrated tube amp ka nalang since musicphile ka naman.

research amx or dared tube amps for budgeted tube amps. malaki ang sound difference ng av receiver vs tubes.  ;)

how big is your room? if it's big enough a 9.4 might be a better idea. just dont sit less than 3m from them or the drivers wont stage or image well.

around 10 by 16 feet, its my bedroom Sir.

I do have a 31 watts rms 2.1 speaker which play sounds enough to fill my room, but sometimes it's not enough especially if I'm playing dance songs.

Sorry, my orig suggestion was for a 9.5; from where you might sit, I don't think that's enough to help it stage well, BUT a 9.4 might be enough, as it gives you the cabinet size to extend into lower freqs but without using a third driver for the bass freqs. Do you have a spot for the floorstanders?

Aside from room acoustics, ported subwoofers tend to be boomy I suggest try a sealed type sub and a good subwoofer controller to initiate frequency response not to overlay your midwoofers lower frequency. Setting your Sub freq too low might caused frequency gap. If you intend to use sub for your music get a low distortion and sealed sub.

for me, if you're on a budget, go for the wharf 9.1 + surplus solid state amp (sansui, pioneer) then a decent surplus CDP, you'd spend less than 15k and you wont be disappointed..

since you can't audition those two, I recommend the 9.1 over the atom. The atom is bright which is good for
home theatre application while the diamond is dark in character at tamang tama sa rotel amp which is a bright amp so the combination is just right for music. If you are going to buy the atom then the NAD is the perfect amp.
