i have an acer laptop na gigabit capable..pero i'm using linksys WRT54g router which is luma na..

makukuha ko ba yung gigabit speed kung i-direct ko ang laptop sa DSL modem(2 mbps)..?

or kailangan ko pa buy ng gigabit router..

kahit anong router ang ikabit mo, ung bottle neck pa rin ay ung DSL speed na 2Mbps. gigabit ethernet is capable of 1000Mbps if your transmission speed is 1000Mbps.

No.  1mbps is 1000bps.  WRT54g mo should be capable of 54mbps for wifi or 100mbps for wired connection.  Sobrang sobra na yan for your 2mbps connection.

However, do note that even if your dsl is 2mbps... you will never reach 2mbps on download speed.  Bandwidth ang 2mbps.  Download speed will be much lower.

1Mbps (Megabit/sec) = 1000Kbps (Kilobit/sec)

i think what he meant was files transfers within your network, from one computer to another computer within your network using wifi. but for downloading, its still very dependent on your dsl speed.

^thanks sir. that's my point exactly. i still get a kick out of people who say that they have high speed connection, 100 mbps when actually they're simply referring to their lan.

and one more thing, the gigabit part in the router, as far as i recall, refers to the 4 port wired switch, not the wifi

Sirs,

just a few points to summarize the discussion

1. Your Internet speed will not increase with the use of a Gigabit Ethernet or wireless-N capable router
2. Internet bandwidth is normally a lot less than your LAN speed
3. LAN speed depends on your infra connection, theoretically these are as follows: 54Mbps - wireless-G; 300Mbps - wireless-N; 100Mbps-wired Fast Ethernet; and 1000Mbps-wired Gigabit Ethernet
4. Benefits of upgrading to wireless-N over wireless-G: besides the higher speed, wireless-N offers a wider range ... if you have a big house, multiple floors - wireless-N is the way to go
5. Generally, benefits of the faster LAN is really what the acronym implies > local area network only ...this is very useful if you have an NMT and you do not want the hassle of plugging-in your NMT to your computer everytime you transfer files > transfer speed is really much faster on Gigabit or wireless-N
