You are right. Those singers are very intimate and their presence immediate. Such genre can easily expose system weaknesses. The Fostex's banana pulp paper cones handle these passages with the delicacy they require.

Rene recommends 91db sensitivity and up. But i think higher is better. Mine are 94db. I tried the Epos Epic 2 and it strained at realistic sound levels. At low levels it sounded fantastic. But definitely bitin.

Is the amarra a big improvement over iTunes?
Title: Re: Gino's Red Room
Post by: Gino on Aug 04, 2013 at 08:55 AM
Very much. Even on a modest t-amp or in-ear monitors the difference is very obvious. You gain air, detail, and punch. I bought Bitperfect for iTunes but Amarra still smoked it.

A Version of Amarra comes free with some models of dacs. Consult their website.

Coming from you, I am flattered. Thanks. I do like wooden flooring but this lower room gets a film of water when Ondoy level storms strike. So it is cement aggregate for now. Is there water proof wooden flooring? Or should I use faux wood? Yours is wood right?

Mine is engineered laminated flooring sir..  Hopefully water will not be spilt on it as to avoid warping..

Title: Re: Gino's Red Room

Walang sub out. Parallel ako from speaker terminals of speaker to the speaker level input terminals of the active sub.

Di kaya masama yan sa amplifier mo?  :)
Title: Re: Gino's Red Room
Post by: Gino on Aug 05, 2013 at 11:09 PM
Nope. Mataas naman ang input impedance ng sub speaker level inputs. Halos di mararamdaman ng tube amp.

Nice set-up and a very inviting dedicated room. For sure Rene's amp is a good match for the Fostex. This set-up is very lovely and intimate with vocals.

It seems you are not a big believer of cables. Another nice upgrade has something to do with power.

Line conditioner and linear power supply (if this is posibble with the mac you are using) comes into mind.

Happy listening!

I bought these Fostex FT17 super tweeters from ebay.uk. I am just waiting for the seller's shipping cost and invoice. These tweeters are perfect for my Fostex FE167E. I like the custom aluminum housing, built-in L-pad, 3 toggles/choices for the crossover, and sexy stands. There should be no problem integrating this.

I installed a pair of Allington Audio Fostex FT17H super tweeters. Selectable 15, 17, 20 khz @ 6db slope. L-pad for gain adjustment. I also had to redo speaker toe in. They intersect a foot in front of my head. I have a 60 degree listening layout. Imaging greatly improved and the super tweeters integrated nicely.

Offhand, all I've read about their effects are true. They not only extend the highs but contributes psychoacoustically to music immediacy from top to bottom. I've dialled out sibilance and am now enjoying as I wait for for burn in changes if there are any.

Oops, sorry I meant to say "lubog". Nagspell check ang phone ko he he.

Yung effect ng super tweets from the last time you heard my system is very subtle. Hindi siya overtly nadagdagan ng kalansing as people normally expect. I tuned it best I could to fill in the very little gaps. Halong psychoacoustics ang nangyari. Biglang nagka presence ang mga elements. And hindi lang basta sa highs. For example,  a snare drum will have a bit of top end bite. Yung kick drum may maliliit na huni maybe from coupling with its metal housing. Think of a bat's ecolocation. They use high frequency sound to find their way. Ganun ang effect I guess. Nadadama mo ang object without consciously hearing it.

Sounds like it is better that way if it is felt more than heard. Sounds like it gave more realism? Yes if i und, it gave the room extra air, something not heard but gave way to sound to... Etc etc etc haha! Basta i feeel you!  8)  ^-^

Small world. He passed by the house this afternoon to look at my sofa. He will be picking it up tomorrow for a makeover. He did mention the speaker stands he made for you and will bring pictures tomorrow. I said, that was exactly what I had in mind. I saw your stands before and had been doing research on whether such stands were made to tune the speakers. Right now my intention is to have my speakers at an ideal height for focus.

I take it you live near Kamuning too?

Bro, I don't say things para lang may masabi. I mean what I say. If I have nothing good to say I don't say anything. I saw the research and hard work you put into your room and system. They are commendable. I believe that this hobby has many incremental stages that are very rewarding. I appreciate work in every stage because either I've been there, going there, or simply dream about being there.

Hi gino,

Newbee question here. How do you use your mac in your set up? I mean does it work as a nad player?

Thanks.

Lem

Post by: Gino on Nov 23, 2013 at 11:03 PM
The mac plays lossless files. A digital to analog converter connects to the Mac's usb. The dac has rca jacks that go to the tube amp. My Mac is dual boot OS X and Windows. I use Foobar in Windows using the dac as the sound output device. I control it using my Android phone via wifi. I am not familiar with Nad.

On occasions, I use my usb dvd drive to play cds. The sound quality through the Mac and dac is comparable to very good commercial cd players. Better than the appliance store dvd players.

@Oldboyracer, Yes, it happens to me to. Glitches perhaps.

The Fostex main driver's highs are quite extended for a single driver. Been using these as is for 10 years. The supertweeters are very interesting. I tuned them to be as realistic as possible. While the metallic shimmers were enhanced, the surprise was the presence it created for every element of the music. "They are right there" are the comments I hear from those who listen.

Cleaned up the setup with 6 inch Analysis Plus Oval cables. The Objective DAC is now tucked behind the Sun Audio SV-2a3 Clone amp. Source is now the HP Mini 210. The HP and the Mac sound identical with the Objective DAC. I decided to liberate the Mac for my mobile computing.

Hi Gino,
Hope you & the family had a very merry Xmas, Have a great New Year. I'm getting this in early as we lost the phone & internet on Dec 11th (thanks Globe) they have a systems problem in our area & cannot find the cause. Had to buy a Tattoo mobile device which at best is useless, it's so slow I can't hold a connection, I surprised it's stayed on long enough for me to post.
BTW cannot comment on your photos, I can only download part of each one.

Title: Re: Gino's Red Room
Post by: Gino on Mar 25, 2014 at 10:18 AM
Initially I used the Schiit Asgard as a preamp. Iyon kasi ang gamit ko na line driver sa t-amp. That sounded very good. Then I later I noticed that the 2a3 amp had a very high gain. The gain knob did a good job with a lot of headroom. So I removed the Schiit Asgard from the system.

Signal chain now:

Netbook--->ODAC--->2a3 amp--->speakers--->sub

Salamat sa mga puri. Ang babait ninyo!

Interestingly the fostex FE167E sound better horizontal than vertical in this room. Doing so puts the port on the same horizontal plane as the drivers, lowers the speaker height, and moves the main speaker and supertweeters outward.  Dunno which did what but it sounds very good. Solid drum kits.

Low bass is my remaining issue apart from the usual untreated room peaks. It is disappointing with EDM.

I simplified the set up. The tv has good car audio like imaging. The broken amp Mirage S8 runs passively from, believe it or not a T-amp.

Bass is same as my original audio system. I was really surprised with this.
