I got hooked into audio after my first break-up. That was about a decade ago when I was still in my early college years. I'm no different. Just like any normal person, I felt depressed and needed an outlet.
One day, while surfing the web looking for ideas on how to set-up my car, I stumbled upon a local automotive website called Autoindustriya. I joined the online discussions and eventually decided to attend one of their car meets. It was there where I found my new love. No, not a woman this time (but also not a man of course), it was car audio.
It all happened when I heard one of the set-ups with Dynaudio speakers... Silky highs, luscious mids and punchy midbass. BOOM! Love at first listen!
This was also the point where the heartache stopped, and the spending began. My wallet hated me for it, but my ears loved it. People say that music soothes the soul and lifts the spirit.. But it only gets better when music is played in high-fidelity. Or should I say Authentic Fidelity?
Speaking of Dynaudio... Since I was just a student back then and only relied on my allowance, it was not easy to acquire my dream set-up. So I had to cut my spending somewhere. Believe it or not, for the next couple of months, I only spent P13 for each lunch. I always ate in that same old carinderia across the school. P8 for the beansprout lumpia and P5 for the rice. Free soup included! Honestly, it felt terrible eating that same lumpia over and over again. But since I wanted the Dyns badly, I had no choice.
Fast forward 2 years.. I was finally able to complete my dream car audio system.

Eventually, this car was sold. But since I loved my equipments so much, I kept them all.
After long months of slumber in the storage bin, I finally decided to use them in my room. Yes, car audio as home audio set-up. But not without problems! Car audio equipments are 12v DC! I just can't plug them in regular 220v AC outlets. So I had to buy a huge regulated power supply with 12v output to power them. Second problem was controlling the volume without a headunit. The solution was a pre-amp. So I bought one. It was a pre-owned Tono Tube Preamp. This was my first foray into tubes so I was really mesmerized by their warm glow. Then yet there was still another issue on where to house my 2-way Dynaudio separates. Fortunately I was able to find a pair of busted NHT bookshelf speakers from our old home theater. I dismantled its drivers and replaced them with the Dyns. Luckily they fit!!
I settled with this set-up: DVD Player -> Tono Preamp -> PPI DEQ 230 -> Audison Power Amp -> Dynaudio 240mkII in NHT enclosure. If you're wondering how it sounded, well… pretty decent but not as good as when they were in my car. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed this system for many months until my parents decided to move and build a new house.
Being an audio enthusiast, a grand and ambitious idea popped into mind of integrating a dedicated music room/home theater into the new house. It was the perfect time since the house was still under construction. So I talked to my dad about the plan and guess what? He declined. He said "Sa umpisa lang yan maganda tapos magsasawa rin. Tignan mo yung home theater natin ngayon, hindi na nagagamit." All of a sudden, my dream melted away. My dad had a point.
After days of sleepless nights, my hunger and thirst for setting up a home theater system was so great that I knew I had to make this dream into reality. Even though dad rejected my first proposal, I knew he still had a soft spot for music in his heart so I figured a way on how to rekindle it.
One weekend, I brought him to Listening in Style. First, they guided us inside their home theater demo room. It looked fabulous with those nice acoustic treatments, plush theater-style seats and high end electronics. To top it off, a set of premium Dynaudio speakers. As soon as they hit the play button, we were immediately transported to a new world.. a virtual reality.. where the gun fights sounded so real as if you will be hit.. explosions that felt life-like, it made my hands sweat! It was really a delight watching movies there. Hence I knew there and then that I wanted something like that!
With our pulses still beating so quickly, they brought us to their high-end music room. This place was more serious looking built for critical audio listening. A pair of giant speakers greeted us. It was the legendary Wilson Alexandria X2. It sounded extremely smooth with very tight and full bass. Vocals were palpable and life-like. We enjoyed it so much that I wanted to stay there and listen for eternity.
After that listening session, my dad and I were in sonic nirvana. It didn't take much effort now to convince him as you've probably guessed. It was a green light on the home theater project!!
The only space available for the home theater in the new house was the attic. Fortunately it was quite big so I was able to obtain an acoustically good room dimension.

Basically, the acoustic treatments were a combination of sound diffusers, absorbers and bass traps. They are all my original design with inspiration coming from various branded acoustic panels. All the fabric that were used are acoustically transparent. When you blow into them, air easily passes through. I am very happy on how they turned out both sonically and visually. Our home theater was completed and became fully operational on the Independence Day of 2006. The system consisted of Dynaudio speakers (Front, Center and Surround), Definitive Technology Subwoofer, Yamaha RX-V2400 Receiver, Plinius 9200 Integrated Amp, Denon 1920 DVD Player, Krell CD Player, Hitachi PJ-TX200 projector and a 92" Da-Lite Fixed Frame Screen.

Completed home theater project (2006)
In this hobby, we always try to maximize our system from simple tweaks to sometimes expensive upgrades. So from our original system in 2006 to date, much has changed already.
First, I moved the center channel to the top of the rack. I was surprised on the big improvement in sound quality. The overall sound became more balanced and the dialogue became clearer. I also repositioned the front speakers and toed it in a bit. As a result, the imaging and focus improved. Not a single centavo was spent on these tweaks, but the improvement was very noticeable!
Next, I replaced the Yamaha RX-V2400 with an Onkyo 805. It's a more advanced receiver capable of decoding HD audio. It also has a better room correction sofware which is the Audyssey Multi EQ XT. The improvement over the Yamaha was very apparent. Soundstage became bigger and more three-dimensional. It also gave better dynamics, impact and punch. The resulting sound from the Onkyo is very crisp yet non-fatiguing.

I then added an SVS PB10NSD sub together with Definitive Tech subwoofer. What a big difference the dual subs made! The bass became cleaner, deeper and with more impact. I truly enjoyed this set-up for a couple of months until I got a chance to acquire a pair of SVS PB12NSDs for a very good price. So obviously I didn't let this rare opportunity pass. I bought them. The online reviews didn't prepare me well enough on what I was getting.. These monsters were better in all aspects! They were less boomy and much much smoother sounding. They also dug in deeper to the point of making you feel even the minutest of rumbles. Yes, they are expensive but worth it.
Afterwards I added an external amplifier, the Audio Refinement Multi 5 to power the center and surround channels. This completely relieved the Onkyo receiver from powering speakers. Honestly at first I was having second thoughts on this upgrade since the Dynaudio fronts were already being powered by the Plinius amp. I thought that maybe the Onkyo 805 was already very much capable in powering the center and surrounds. But to my surprise, adding the Audio Refinement amp still made a significant difference! Sound from the center channel became more 3-dimensional with an increase in micro-details and clarity. The sound of the whole system also got better. It became more fluid and even more dynamic.

Due to advancements in optical media format, a Panasonic BD30 was put in place of the aging Denon DVD player. A Dune Smart H1 media player was also added. Now I can play BDMV files with full menu and complete features. Very cool and convenient indeed.

And to make the most out of my high definition 1080p sources, the Hitachi PJ-TX200 was replaced with an Epson 8700UB projector. Movies are now presented in full HD. Out of the box, the picture quality was already good. But what separates the good from the great is the video calibration. Thanks a lot sir Streetsmart! For 2-channel audio listening, I purchased a Yaqin CD-3 tube buffer and upgraded the stock tubes to a pair of Sylvania 6SN7 WGTA. Here's the audio chain: Pioneer CD Player -> Yaqin Tube Buffer -> Plinius Integrated Amp -> Dynaudio Contour S5.4. The buffer gave life to the sound.. Bigger soundstage, crispier highs, lusher midrange and better bass extension.

And lastly for analog playback, I acquired a Thorens TD160 turntable and paired it with a Rega Exact cartridge. It's hard to describe in words how wonderful vinyl sounds. It's a totally different experience! You have to hear for yourself to appreciate.

Music not only soothes the soul and lifts the spirit, but also brings family and friends closer together. There's nothing like sharing the home theater experience to other people. Knowing that you made someone happy makes you happier. And that surely makes all the time, effort, blood, sweat and tears all worthwhile! :)

The work you did with the acoustic treatment is quite impressive. Maganda talaga tunog ng HT. The most impressive for me was the bass response, even when there was no subwoofer. Very tight bass.
Of course, the projector is really quite good. Very bright picture and 3D quality.

ruined schedules von kaya di natuloy but the mystery of the dual subwoofer was unlokced already kaya tayo na talaga ang sisilip sa set up na ito but it has to wait, been very busy sa office and other stuff

mine is a different story, i had the chance to get another pb12nsd when i used to have one but the reviews and performance of the ULtra is something hard to resist,everytime i visit mike c's place, the Ultra just do not fail to impress me. it took me several discussions with mike before finally deciding to get the Ultra. The Rosenut color alone is enough reason for me to get it. ;D
Im sure a couple of Rosenut Ultra's would compliment your dyns very well. ;)

EB's are very rare now, though we had a big celebration sometime this year, it was Autoindustriya's anniversary. Free food and drinks at one of the restaurants at Fort.

Hi Paul, finally you agreed to post na your very impressive audio cum HT set-up. :D Whenever we (nelson, trod93 & robert/leonidas) have the great fortune of visiting paul, we were always mesmerized when we listen to our favorite cuts from the mark kunzel Telarc CD Round Up. The sound emanating from the huge dynes contour 5.4s really makes the whinnies and moos of the horses and cows very very life-like :o

Hi Paul, finally you agreed to post na your very impressive audio cum HT set-up. :D Whenever we (nelson, trod93 & robert/leonidas) have the great fortune of visiting paul, we were always mesmerized when we listen to our favorite cuts from the mark kunzel Telarc CD Round Up. The sound emanating from the huge dynes contour 5.4s really makes the whinnies and moos of the horses and cows very very life-like :o

I subscribed to the school of thought that you cannot have HT and stereo with the same set up but seeing your system with multiple amps and those Contours, yours I'm sure is an exception. :)

what impress me the most is not about the gears, the nice set up will always be there. but what strikes me the most is that, from that small dream of having something in life, the perseverance that you've shown can be an inspiration for others like me. sir what nice story to share with. as the saying goes "libre ang mangarap"..

Kidding aside every thing kasi sa house nina Paul is very clean and neat, nakakahiya nga umapak sa sahig kasi sobra linis. pati yung vinyl niya sobra linis na miss ko tuloy yung popcorn effect :)
Paul me and my son immediately watched TDK after arriving sa house. Immediately din na lumabas ako sa kuwarto kasi sabi nung son ko sobra layo daw ng AQ & PQ. Palipasin ko muna ng konti para mawala sa memory namin yung magnificent HT set-up mo ;D Again thanks!

Seriously speaking, i think the "evangelist" meant, baka ibang configuration na ang new digital amps nila.
Possibly, but even older Class-D designs can reach very high efficiency numbers (92-95% efficiency is not unheard of).
I would think that they've increased the carrier frequency in the new Onkyos, to allow for a wider bandwidth (and maybe fix the DF issue that plagued their older VL amps). The NuForce Reference amps run at 500kHz for example, which is on the high side of current market tech this side of MCD devices. It would be great if Onkyo went MCD with their new amps (which would be a good signal of maturity of this tech). :)
Filterless Class-D might be the future as well, but it's currently limited to low power applications.

As for the LFE LPF setting, it doesn't change many movies, pero may movies kasi talaga na may upper LFE output kaya mas maganda na ireproduce yung buong range kung pwede naman diba. :) The filter can be set lower, in case you have sub localization issues (due to relative position or resonances), are sensitive to encoding artifacts in certain formats, have phase issues in the upper LFE range, or simply would want to focus the sub's capability for purely room shake use. In most cases though, I prefer running the LFE in its full uncurtailed glory.

Kasi magkaiba pala yung signal na ibinabato ng receiver sa LFE channel at satellites. So yung subwoofer frequencies from 80HZ - 120Hz nawawala na at hindi na naririnig. Ang effect nito wala masyadong body/sipa yung bass pero mas pronounced yung bass extension. Nung itinaas namin sa 120Hz mas seemless yung bass at mas ramdam yung 'kick' while still having the very deep bass extension SVS is known for. Basta mas gumanda. Tapos libre lang. ;D

It was refreshing to hear something different. If I were to use a single adjective for this setup, I'd use "collected." The smooth frame rate and velvety texture of the video, together with the overall audio presentation of both systems (even handed lows, clear midrange and gentle highs) deliver a very composed rendition of the material (at least that's how it strikes me). Unlike most systems that focus on visual punch and sonic tension, crunch and dynamics, this system can be viewed and heard for hours without fatigue. :)

The Kandy K2 handles low impedances and high current loads significantly better than the HK 980, based on respective spec sheet numbers. Harman window-dresses their 4 ohm performance by quoting an output measured with a looser distortion tolerance, and yet still falls short of the K2 spec. Of course actual measurement may deviate quite a bit from spec sheet numbers, but with a transformer rated at almost twice the capacity, my bets are on the K2.
The Onkyo A9755 is the most creative in the spec sheet department, as Onkyo measures with very wide tolerances (aka "Japanese Watts"). Despite this, independent measurements show that it still handles low impedance loads better than the two other amps in your list (the wonders of Class D efficiency). Its main downside being that it exhibits poor damping (compared to other amps in this price range, save for tube-based devices) because of the output filter implementation.

Maraming magugulat ngayon compared sa dati. Talagang may Midas touch si master jedi guru Ivan. Wala na akong maisip pa to maximize your gears. Except Hiato na. ;) It may not sound like the dyns that were actually known for pero i think yan talaga ang tunog dapat talaga ng dyns. The mids are perfect for me. And still, parang mas-effortless pa ngayon ang system mo.

Ang ganda tumunog ng kapatid ng speakers ni Master Paul using that amp. Very very high current design (having trannies with capacities 7x the rated output per channel, asa ka pang mapa collapse mo ang rail nyan). Parang match made in heaven sa big Dyn speakers nung narinig ko. Very crisp, urgent and dynamic sound, saka expansive yung projected stage in both width and depth. I liked that system more than the Consequence and Evidence setups ng LIS, dahil siguro ok sakin yung character nung system. Narinig din ata ni Master Paul yun.
If you've heard this system blare, magtutunog ipis yung Naim + JBL LS na gustong gusto mo. ;) It delivers the same urgency, but with much more slam (though mas mahal na system din ito, at kasingbigat ng tao yang amp na yan dahil sa trannies at heatsinks... literal).
Kung nagtataka ka bakit hindi standard IEC yung kabitan ng power cord, the reason is because this amp can draw 26A from the outlet. ;) IEC is only rated upto 15A, sa alam ko.

Ang ultimate system ni Master Jamy pa. Kinikilabutan ako at baka magkaron ako ng fatal familial insomnia pag narinig ko yang flagship build mo, master. Mental image pa lang nga eh malufet na.

You're welcome idol. Mapapabilis pa yan with tweaks, defaults pa lang yan at pinagana ko lang yung ibang features nung hardware mo. Tinanggal ko din yung bumbilya ng 'check engine' light. ;)

You can surely scale a video, halos lahat ngayon kaya na yun.
As for a 4k PJ, hindi naman Displayport gamit ng HT PJs, mostly sa professional displays gamit ang Displayport. Kung may mahanap ka siguro na converter supporting that resolution, baka pwede.

Yes, versatility as in gaming and other consumer-oriented 3D tasks.
You get full post processing sa HD 6850, sa built-in mo you'd be utilizing adaptive post-processing (dependent on workload). Hindi lang nga deep color ang output Radeon 6850, since consumer graphics adapter siya. Saka scary din baka mahirapan na PSU mo sa 6850 at 15A lang 12V rail nyan. HD 6670 or V4900 malamang eksakto lang.
By the way, gamit mo na ba yung iOS remote ng PowerDVD?

Palit motherboard ang ibig sabihin mo niyan (aside from casing), dahil wala siyang USB 3.0 headers. Puro asa I/O plate sa likod ang USB 3.0 ng board nya.
Wala na din expansion slots na available dahil sa HD 7970 crossfire. :o

Just want to share some updates I've done..
I migrated from a Panasonic BD player and Dune NMT to an HTPC set-up. The improvement in picture quality was very prominent and even more so when real time video post-processing was applied! :o The sound quality also improved for some reason. The only gripe I have is that it is a little inconvenient to use because it has no remote control.

My HTPC: AMD Llano A8-3870 + AMD 6950 Video Card
For audio, I replaced my Pioneer LD/CD Player and Yaqin CD3 tube buffer combo with a Musiland Monitor 03US. It's purely computer-based and is capable of playing 24bit Studio Masters of up to 384Khz. For reference, CDs are only 16bit/44.1Khz. The difference in SQ was night and day. It's velvety smooth, detailed, crisp, transparent and energetic. It gives life and soul to the music. It was so good we decided to bring in Musiland and become the local distributor. 8)

Mas maganda and more involving na ngayon yung sound. Dialogues are much clearer and mas intense ang feeling pag mga action scenes. I demoed Transformers: Dark of the Moon and matindi yung tunog! The Dyns came alive! Ngayon ko lang din nadinig at naramdaman yung SVS subs ko na ganitong kaganda! :o :o

Maganda sa sweet spot pero may konting issues sa left and right. Sa phase control lang kasi dinaya para more or less mag-align with the fronts. Baka mas maganda kung minimal yung phase adjustment at igalaw mismo yung box for time alignment.

We're talking about 2 channel use naman. I don't see him listening outside the sweet spot anyway. With that use, a properly setup single sub is likely better than two or more sub-optimally placed subwoofers.
Even if you can make the bass great in all possible listening spots, but if the rest of the spectrum still suffers, you'd still be relegated to a mid-fi experience in those spots.

Nag-improve siya dahil sa pagtono ni Master Ivan at sa power cables niyo. My GF and I a/b tested the Furukawa power cables against the stock cables of the Plinius integrated amp, HTPC and Jamo subwoofer yesterday.
Results:
Plinius and HTPC - Luminis yung tunog at lumitaw ang details probably because of lower noise floor. Mas naging smooth yung vocals at nagimprove yung bass. May perception din na lumakas yung overall volume.
Jamo sub - Nag-tighten up yung bass. Nabawasan yung overhang.
Takang taka kami dahil ako pa nagsasabi before na impossible magkaroon ng difference sa power cables dahil 1.5meters lang yan out of the hundreds of kilometers electricity has to travel from the powerplant to our homes.

Thanks Master Luther! Yup, 5.4 na ngayon. I recently toed-in the surround speakers. Malaki improvement ngayon in terms of envelopment and panning of sound. :)

Thanks Konsehal! Hindi ko magamit for audio kasi diba iba ang placement ko ng fronts for audio and HT. Hindi maganda ang frequency response kapag ginamit ko as is (same phase settings na pang HT) eh. Will need to experiment pa with the phase settings of the Jamo subs for audio. hehe
For HT, nung nag triple subs ako.. malaki improvement over just using the dual SVS. Mas nagkaroon ng chest punch and detail/texture yung bass. Nung nag quad subs ako.. ganun pa din more or less yung overall sound pero mas naging effortless yung bass (less compressed). Kayang kaya i-pressurize yung room. Grabe ang massage effect ngayon at mas ramdam yung low frequency extension for some reason! :o :o I measured using pure tones and my SPL meter hanggang 18Hz decent pa yung response. Actually hanggang 15hz meron pa din pero medyo mahina na.
Sa Audiophile ko nabili yung DBX. Actually pang pro audio application siya. Walang parametric EQ yun. It's purely an active crossover. Although may mga EQ din ang DBX na pwedeng ikonekta.

Ang alam ko, kapag HT mode, Onkyo front pre-outs to Plinius power amp section (bypassing the preamp section).
Kapag hifi mode, PC to Musiland to Plinius preamp inputs (signals passing the preamp section for volume control).
