Though this'd be an interesting post. Anyway, here are mine:
You know you've too many DVDs when...
...You start using your Brazil: Criterion Collection DVD as a coaster.
...Greenpeace brands your residence as a heavy metal hazard.

...you hold off buying a new car because, even though it hasn't yet been officially announced, you're convinced that the manufacturer will release a "special edition" within the next couple of years.
...when doing your taxes, in answer to the question, "Number of children," you answer, "552, with seven pre-ordered."
...you refuse to date anyone who thinks VHS is still hip.
...you bitch about the fact that you can't order your house from Amazon, the bank doesn't take "$10 off $80,000" coupons on your mortgage, and the free shipping promo doesn't apply.
And the number one sign that you've too many DVDs is...
...you're legally married to a flat black progressive-scan console named "Pioneer."

Not lately, but I used to be fan of Dave's, back when he had real hair. ;)
By the way, this is officially my final post from the Philippines. I have to leave for the airport in exactly 38 minutes. Next time I log on, it will be from NJ. I may be offline for about a week, until I can scrounge myself a new 'puter in the states. 'Til then, be good everyone! ;)

...and the first thing you do is buy a couple of DVDs at Best Buy and another at Costco!
Hi everyone, I'm back online, after a fashion. I don't yet have a computer, but I can use my sister-in-law's laptop while she's not away on business trips (when, of course, she brings her laptop with her). Meanwhile, I've passed the word to some NY connections to hook me up with a new 'puter from the back of a truck. ;)
And a DVD player, too, while they're at it. ;)
This is officially my first post from NJ, and I would like to thank you guys for the nice well-wishing.
benny - the trip was half bumpy and half boring. The most interesting moment came just before touchdown at Newark airport, where our plane's left wheels touched ground, then the right wheels followed, then the left wheels lifted off the ground, then finally settled back down again. Woo-hoo!
And this is a loooooong effing flight. It's like falling off a 200-storey building: "AAAAAH! (Gasp) AAAAH! (Gasp) AAAAAAAH! (Gasp) AAAAAAAH! THUD!"
Multi - Tell Sony that Sandra and I send our regards. ;)
Oh, and you don't need a metal detector to find DVDs at my house in Manila. I left them behind. All of them. There was just no room in my suitcases. So my wife will ship them to me via slow boat in the next few days. Now before you even think of showing up at her door dressed up as a VRB inspector, "just checking the video entertainment media on-site, ma'am," I warn you: she is authorized to use deadly force to protect my DVDs. ;)
DVDgurl - as you can tell from the intro, I followed your advice not at all. See the "Latest DVD Purchases" thread for more details. ;)
And you may get some perverse gratification to learn that my sis's laptop is a Toshiba PeeCee, so I am forced to do Windows (yech) while I wait for my new Mac to fall from the back of a truck somewhere in Hackensack.

This is no joke. I realized I've been seeing TOO much DVDs when I was watching a movie the other day, I reached out to my DVD remote to pause it so I can go pee. I got pissed because my remote seems to have broke, only to realize that I had been watching HBO. :-/

gonz - Hey you're back! ;D I don't believe it! in just a few hours, you've bought dvds already! Have you even unpacked ? (LOL, I would do the same thing, drop everything and run to BJ's...) You have to ask for bently's advice how to curb this addiction when walking into Circuit City, Best Buy, etc...lucky for me, I only have to contend with Astrovision over here. ;)
Before we hijack this thread, how about starting a gonz's "Apple pie, Patis, dvds, abtp.." thread? It would be really interesting if you could give us any updates. Well, if you have the time ...

what i mean by selling all your worldly posessions to buy more dvds and a portable dvd player, is you sold EVERYTHNG,
your dog "spot", your house, your bed, your car, your clothes, your shoes, your everything. and the only posession you have left is your dvds and a portable dvd player hat you watch on the streets, kinda like a homeless guy, but with a dvd player and has the whole criterion collection at his disposal. :)

10. You await for the WARNING and MENU screens when watching movies on TV/cable or in cinemas. ::)
9. You cry everytime the peso devaluates. But it never stops you from buying DVDs. :'(
8. Everyone in your house is familiar with DVD terms even if they are not DVD addicts. They are very conversive already with these terms. Even the maid knows. ;)
7. You search for Play Movie, Scene Selection, Special Features, and Setup in your celfone menu. ???

You're welcome gonz. I just hope my Top 10 list would also make some of the readers laugh. The only thing with our lists is that those non-DVD oriented people would not be able to understand them. Kasi one of my officemate saw me laughing while reading your list and he looked at my monitor to see why. He start reading your list but could not find the joke in it. I had to explain it pa to him.

* When your notion of bad news changes. Forget about kidnapping, typhoons, devaluation, etc. The worst news is any announcement of yet another special edition of a disc you already have.
* When you own multiple versions of the same title, because some have a unique feature, or more likely because no one wants to buy your old, feature-challenged disc (sob)
* When you know, just know, that the studios will discover (or invent) a word more ultimate than "Ultimate"
* When the first observation of strangers who come to your house is, "Mahilig pala kayo sa sine"
* When your friends and relatives calculate the cost of your collection and figure you could have bought a car or made a down payment on real estate
* When the majority of your discs are unopened, for fear of unsealing one just when they are about to announce another special edition
* When you have computed your upcoming free time to watch your DVDs, and realize that you cannot possibly go through your collection this year or next. Even if you don't include watching all the multiple angles of Fight Club. And yet you haven't stopped buying.
* When Amazon has half a dozen different addresses attached to your name, representing all the drop-off points of friends and relatives who are spending a couple of weeks in the States
* When you have more DVDs than your neighborhood rental store, yet you prioritize watching their collection, especially of discs you don't want to open (see above)
* When you read "Just Say No" you think the sign is advising you to ignore those new upcoming special editions

you're trying to look for a 7 step program for you dvd addiction...
you get the shakes when you go to a dvd store and did not buy any dvd's
when you do get the urge..you pile up those dvd orders on your amazon shopping cart and when its time to confirm the order, you would suddenly turn off your computer...then give a sigh a relief...
tuesday seems to be the hardest day for you....
you look at your dvd collection and get this feeling of guilt...like people who are starving in africa, and have not yet experienced watching a dvd movie :'(

You have the Region 1-6 release of particular titles just to make your collection more complete.
You have the first release and all the succeeding re-releases of particular titles even if there is no difference in the quality of the audio and video - trip mo lang.
You have a DVD version of all the Beta, VHS, and VCD titles you have collected earlier in life.

January 30, 2003 -- IT'S Thursday afternoon and Stephen Garrett is combing stores for the latest DVDs.
Most new DVDs are released on Tuesdays, but Garrett - a 32-year-old film editor who cuts movie trailers - knows which stores in New York will break the rules and put out the latest DVDs early.
"Kim's Video on Bleecker Street very consistently has stuff out Thursday or Friday," says Garrett.
Garrett, who already owns about 500 discs, is one of a new breed of entertainment junkies: the DVD addict.
On Mondays, you can find him at the Virgin Megastore in Union Square, awaiting the stroke of midnight, when employees stock the shelves with all the newest titles.
"They turn the escalators off at 12:30 so you have to get there between midnight and 12:30 a.m.," says Garrett, before laughing. "I am so geeking out right now."
Garrett and others find themselves unable to resist the lure of shiny little discs loaded with extras like commentary tracks and deleted scenes.
Among culture connoisseurs, vast DVD libraries are fast rivaling leather-bound books and vinyl LPs as must-haves.
Hollywood couldn't be happier. Last year, the movie studios grossed $9 billion at the box office but about $20 billion on sales and rentals of DVDs and video.
This year, studios will probably make more money on DVD sales alone than at the box office. And it's not just film fanatics who are powering this change.
Heather Lynn Jensen is a trademark lawyer who frequently makes impulse DVD purchases.
"I went to Virgin and they had a bunch of DVDs on sale for $10 and I bought three or four of them. It was a romantic comedy kind of day, so I bought 'Moonstruck,' 'Four Weddings and a Funeral,' and some others. I have about 30 DVDs, but it grows steadily."
Jensen has a lot of "girlie movIes," like "Moulin Rouge" as well as titles like "Fight Club" because of all the extras.
As a rule, she only gets movies she knows she'll want to watch over and over again.
Sal Nunziato also has a pile of tapes he rarely looks at anymore. As the co-owner of NYCD - a CD and DVD store on Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side - Nunziato is his own best customer.
"I'll bring home a dozen titles," says Nunziato, who has about 1,000 DVDs in his library. Like Garrett and other hard-core collectors, Nunziato admits he has DVDs on the shelf he hasn't even opened yet.
"Oh, absolutely," says the 39-year-old. "You've got to figure if I watch four to seven movies a week, that's a lot. And then the next week another dozen come out. It really is out of hand."

Browsing through the earlier responses, you would think of them as jokes pero marami nang nag post na hagip yung marami sa atin. I have to update my DVD list in my PDA to prevent me from buying duplicates kasi I forgot na dahil I never watch some of the titles I bought. There was also one time I hid DVD purchases from the wife kasi marami na talaga. Then the arrangement of the furnitures have to be done to accomodate the growing number of titles.

I only caught one time when my wife saw the receipt of my dvd slip on top of my cabinet when she clean up the area. Very true. And someone opined the reason for this is that DVD titles you've already watched really give little or no re-watch impetus. So you spend so much time mulling over which to watch. Unless you have a specific reason to rewatch a specific title, nothing on the shelve is. The only DVD title worth watching is a NEW one you haven't watched. ;D That's why you just have to buy new ones everytime. ;D

One night, nothing good was on local TV. Cable channels are offering the same usual stuff. So I decided to watch a DVD instead. I pored over my collection (two tower racks that can hold 45 dvds each, 1 shelf for 30 dvds and storage cabinet for 90 dvds). After seeing all of them, I just decided to watch cable TV na lang.

My solution to this is to keep on upgrading or downgrading my HT setup. But usually yung mga favorites lang ang mga pinapanood ko ulit. Gaya nung nakabili ako ng projector then this time Im watching my old titles again kasi nakabili ako ng pixel plus tv. Next time, eh pag nagpalit naman ng speakers.
