Ayus!

oh sorry, no.
I mean, instead of using a usb keyboard,
a bluetooth keyboard would be more apt.

I think it is one of the use of the usb slot in front.

I read online that it does.

kasi mahirap mag search sa youtube or facebook if you are going to type using the remote.

unless.... wdtv upgrades their app para may keyboard interface. now that would be cool!  :D

May keyboard nga yan.  Very useful, kasi easier to use than the real remote.

Ang silbi ng WiFi sa akin, yung Shoutcast internet radio, and the option to wirelessly transfer the media file from PC to the WD's HD storage.  Mababaw lang naman ang kaligayahan ko ...  :D

or maybe if the ios app will work with an ipad and use the ipad as a keyboard.. e di panalo...

Yes, the app works with my iPad 2.  Kaya lang, portrait view lang, ayaw mag horizontal view.  Pero puwede namang mag 2x zoom.

Nice! Simpleng kulam ito ah...  ::)

Ayos na ayos yan sir.  Cheap lang naman, di ba?

Tamang-tama sa Christmas & New Year, para may bagong kinakalikot during the holidays ...  ;)

question lang mga ser..
i've read in many forums na you may change/edit this player's GUI -- specifically how the covers of movies and music albums are shown. parang nagiging "cover flow" ng apple, actually even better since may option where it will show the synopsis and the artists ng movies. there are instructions and programs in the net kung pano ito gawin, but really "techie" na for most people like me. is there a shop who can do this?

Hi Wax,

Stock GUI is pretty basic and simple, though you may customize it further. I listed below one (of plenty) site I saw, wherein you may fully customize its GUI.
Check it out, just click on the "screenshot" button to see different layouts you can customize WD's GUI's :) Ang gwapo...

It seems that this box does not support true 24fps.

When set to "match frame rate," my 23.976 files play fine, but my 24p files have the 40-sec. stutter.  That's the opposite of the old WD's behavior, where 23.976 had the 40-sec. stutter and 24p played fine.

I have only 2 movie files with true 24p frame rates --- Blitz and Raise the Red Lantern, so the bug is not too much of a big deal for me.  Besides, motion cadence of true 24p looks fine at a 60p setting anyway.

My conclusion is that WD's firmwares (or Sigma chips?) do not distinguish between 23.976p and true 24p.  When the WD setting says "24" fps, it's actually 23.976fps rather than true 24fps.

Dyan din ako bumili.  Now I'm streaming my TV shows from PC to WD TV Live via TVersity.

My PS3 used to handle those streaming chores but recently, nagkaka hiccups na si PS3 sa streaming and I don't know why.

It has been almost a month since the thread was last updated.

To the owners: Are you happy with it, any hiccups with the latest firmware?

I am considering buying this media player with this setup in mind.

- HDTV via HDMI
- WD TV Live via 802.11g/n to a PC running Windows Vista

Any helps is welcome.

Yes, I'm happy with it.

No problems with the latest firmware.  But don't expect perfection.  All media players have minor problems here and there.  In my case, I have no complaints about this latest WD TV version.

You should try browsing the WD TV SMP (streaming media player) official forum.  Here's a thread about the latest firmware (released May 7):

 http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Streaming-Firmware/New-Release-Firmware-Version-1-08-17-for-WD-TV-Live-Streaming/td-p/401879

I use Windows 7, and I don't have any problems; very easy to set up.  I have no experience with Vista, but I hear it's also OK as long as you use WORKGROUP instead of HOMEGROUP:

I've tested wireless streaming of 1080p content, and it works without hiccups.

However, I don't trust the reliability of any wireless system, so I only watch whole movies via local disc.

Not below P5,000.  I got mine for P5,600, but I think it's only P5,200 now.

Thanks! I bought the WD TV Live yesterday for P4,900.

It prompted me to update the firmware from 1.04.xxx to 1.08.xx so I cannot comment on firmware older than the one released in 05/12.

Is there a way to arrange the files by time? This is how I normally watch content rather than file type or name.

I was offered a Xtreamer SideWinder3 for P5,500 but the manufacturer makes 802.11n connectivity optional. So I have to buy an antenna for P1,900.

It has a nice feature set but it overlaps my setup.

I have a dedicated Intel Atom Nettop as a file server. It allows me to run it 24/7/365 using minimum power.

Previous to this I used the first popcorn hour but quickly realized that it is only suitable for use for light single users.

actually, the Xtreamer sidewinder wireless-N dongle can also use the cheaper CDRKing ones... just make sure you get the same chipset models.

As for WDTV Live streaming options, does this only work on the most current model releases or can work on the Gen1 or Gen2 models? Also, the 1080p streaming can be done on wireless mode without problems?

Go to Sort & Filter > Sorting > Date.  I haven't tested if the option also recognizes time in addition to date.

This thread has been dead for quite some time but i was curious about a few things re:wd tv live.  I'm an owner of the more"jurassic" wd hd media player and there are times that i need to switch between stereo audio output or digital audio output to be able to hear sound through my a/v receiver.  I know that this is most probably due to the torrent i downloaded but i wanted to save myself the trouble of having to switch manually. Also, i depend a lot on my network drive and i believe the wd tv live can play my movies saved in my network so that saves me the trouble of transferring files from a pc to a thumb drive. So my question now is:

1.  Can it switch from stereo to digital automatically?
2.  When it does output digital audio, is the wd tv live capable of delivering 5.1/7.1?

I am fairly new in the HT category so i probably dont even understand my own 2nd question, injustvwantbto be able to maximize my HT. But this is probably me not knowing what correct setting i should use.  All i know is that when i get lucky, i get to watch my downloaded 720/1080p movies in 5.1 surround sound when i select the digital audio setting.

I hope someone out there cam help me.

THANKS

I've owned it since the summer of 2009, so my guess is 2nd gen. When i hit about it tells me wd tv hd media player fw version 1.02.07.

I connect via hdmi 1.3 to a pioneer receiver then hdmi out to an LG TV.

When there is no sound using digital setting the pioneer displays mpeg-2-aac. When i switch to stereo, magically it plays the sound and the pioneer display says stereo. The few times that i was able to play digital the pioneer displays dolby digital.

I've owned it since the summer of 2009, so my guess is 2nd gen. When i hit about it tells me wd tv hd media player fw version 1.02.07.

Latest firmware of the Gen. 2 is 1.01.77 --  http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfwdtv_hd (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfwdtv_hd)

Since you have firmware 1.02.07, then your unit is a Gen. 1 -- http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wdtv/ (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wdtv/)

It's been a long time since I had a Gen. 1, but if  I recall correctly, the STEREO audio setting is for analog sound; HDMI setting is for digital sound.  So if your connection is via HDMI only --- you will have no sound on STEREO audio setting, but will have sound on DIGITAL audio setting.

If you have sound even on STEREO audio setting, how does the analog audio pass when the WD is set to STEREO?  Do you also have an analog audio connection via RCA, connected simultaneously with the HDMI?

If you have both HDMI and RCA connections, remove the RCA audio connections and test it.  The simultaneous connection might be confusing the unit as to which output should be prioritized.

If you still have problems, you might have firmware errors.  If so, you need to reset the device, or flash your firmware.  I recommend upgrading to the latest firmware, since the unit should have its version's final firmware anyway.

See the Release Notes for the firmware installation procedure:

And after a FW update..I still encounter the same problem...lol, I guess its with the way the file I downloaded was configured...Next time I'll just look for 5.1 torrents, those seem to work just fine...

Well at least you've eliminated firmware error as a possible source of the problem.

You said the receiver says "mpeg-2-aac" when the WD is set to DIGITAL and there is no sound, but there is sound when you set the WD to STEREO mode.  The WD Gen. 1 manual says it's compatible with AAC audio format only in STEREO mode, so I guess that's it.  I thought the STEREO mode only applied to analog audio, but I guess not, since you said you only have HDMI and no analog audio connections.

(Note: "AAC" and "MPEG-2 AAC" are synonymous.  MPEG-4 AAC is an extended version of MPEG-2 AAC.)

You should try to avoid AAC format.  That's what I do, because on the new WD, I notice that AAC audio gives me some annoying pops and clicks when I skip the video forward or backward, so if the title I want is only available in AAC, I convert the audio to MP3.  AAC is a good format, but it's not yet a mature format, that's why AAC issues are inevitable at this stage.

Aha! I guess you answered my question afterall, I couldn't find that info in the manual, or to be honest, I was probably speed reading the manual too much that I missed that detail! Lol! if the 1st Gen WD can only understand AAC in stero then i think its a fair conclusion that you are right.

and on oyur side note, yes, I sincerely think these AAC formats are a pain in the arse and I will take your suggestion that I should avoid them  ;D

Thank you, this helped a lot!

I have one last question regarding the WD TV Live streaming, If I connect an external hard drive to the WD TV Live, is it possible to access the files in that said drive using my PS3 in another room? in short, will the WDTV Live function as some sort of NAS drive.  I was going through the forums at western digital and there are mixed answers so I am quite confused or I think the better term would be unsure, if i could test the unit at the store that would be great but I doubt if any merchant would allow me to do such a stunt, hehe.  Hopefully someone can help me out because I saw one available at a very affordable price of P4,200.  I certainly hope its possible...

I am still using WDTV Gen 1. Am playing a lot of 720p mkv movies in AAC (2ch) audio format. Am using Digital Audio out using Optical cable to an HTIB. I don't have any audio problem, even the pop as described here. Have set my HTIB to PLII simulated 5.1. I don't have any complain on the sound quality.

What this WDTV Gen 1 can't play is AAC (5.1 ch) audio. No sound would come out of it. In this case, you have to convert the audio to AC3 (5.1 ch) instead.

Now this i would have to say i did not think of, converting to AC3 for the 5.1ch output..

Use "avidemux 2.5". Set to Video - Copy, Audio - AC3 (Aften), Format - MKV. Then File - Save Video. Easy.

I'm assuming this is a type of file you were able to play before and suddenly refused to work. Fw is at its latest version? And is it just this particular one that refuses to work while others with the same file type works perfectly fine?

What we need to know are the specs of the video file in question.

The program content is immaterial, whether it's a TV pilot or a Cubao Olympics, or "stuff."

In the meantime, try browsing this thread:

yup... for suits episode 1, i was forced to download a version with much lower bitrate just for the sake of starting and watching the series..

for the london olympics, i dunno how it played, but after transferring about 5x it finally played

as for the beijing olympics im still trying to research..

atty barrister, i did read that thread yesterday, but there were no clear solution.. i did try to restart the device, pero ayaw parin..

ive read in some other thread na kelangan daw i disable ang header compression or demux the vid.. ive yet to do that..

on a side note, it will make the file 0 bytes after it says it wont play it.... thats what ive noticed upon checking using the PC.

No, that's not it.  The 1st Gen WDTV was the only model that had header compression problems.

You still haven't told us the specs of the video file.

At least tell us if it's an mkv.

interestingly.. it wont also play sa wdtv live. and yes 0 bytes din sya after.. so im guessing its a file incompatibility issue nga.. coz pc plays it well..

have to do more research on this..

yes atty.. its mkv.. beijing olympics opening..  will check further on the mkv details.

Do you have Media Player Classic Home Cinema on your PC?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpc-hc/

I think it includes Media Info, the program that shows the video file specs.  Very convenient --- all you have to do is right-click on the video file and select "Media Info".

If you have software that tells you the media info, you'll be able to figure out which files you should avoid.  Without it, you'll always be referring to your media file by title ---- and if you describe your media file as "Beijing Olympics," you're really not telling us anything.  ;)

When you say transfering, does it mean you are moving it to a Flash drive and not streaming from a NAS?  I'm just curious because I own an old school Gen 1 WDTV and i encountered the same problem when I switched from one Flash drive to another, I refrained from using the problematic drive and never encountered the problem again.  Continue isolating the problem sir.  ;)

Does playing it from a different source work? I mean, instead of your hard drive try using something else, I'd hate to say it but I've crashed a hard drive too because of my stupidity of not ejecting it (I've read somehwere that this may have caused it, not 100% certain though).  It started by green pixels appearing all over the screen and then it just refused to work one day.

3 ReFRames is easy, so no problems with that.  But I'm suspicious about "[email protected]," since it sounds pretty high:

I'm no expert, and I don't even know what that spec means, so you should try googling if the WDTV SMP has any problems with Format profile [email protected].

Do you have a WD TV Live or a WD TV Live Streaming (Gen 3)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WD_TV#Models

If you have the Live, mabagal talaga yan compared sa Live Streaming Gen 3.

But if your unit is already the Gen 3 Live Streaming, matatagalan pa bago magkaroon ng Gen 4, baka years pa ang aabutin.

Sigma 700 Mhz ang processor niyan, very high for a 2011 model.

AFAIK, the expensive models of 2012 like the Popcorn C300 ($350) are 800 Mhz.

For those with the new gen 3 WDTV Live:

Does the locally sold unit have Netflix?

Does digital audio out via optical pass both 5.1 and stereo audio without having to change settings?

Thanks!
Title: Re: WD TV Live Streaming
Post by: barrister on Aug 18, 2012 at 07:04 AM

No Netflix.  The geolocation check blocks Netflix in Asia.

Digital audio passes via optical as is.  If audio is encoded in 5.1, it passes as 5.1; if encoded in 2.0, it passes as 2.0 without need for any change in settings.

Something suddenly went wrong. My WDTV remote app suddenly could not detect my WDTV Live. I also can't stream videos fromy SGSIII to my WDTV Live all of a sudden.

I already powercycled both phone and WDTV Live. Everything else seems to work fine as my Buffalo Cloudstation still streams to my WDTV Live.

But for some reason, my Galaxy SIII and WDTV Live can't detect each other.

Will try again later with the wife's iPhone and Galaxy Note.

I experienced this once, after a reformat of my Windows 7 PC.  I forgot that the WORKGROUP names should be the same.  I changed the default name on the PC, then the WD internet didn't work, and the WD remote on my Samsung phone wouldn't work.  PC hard disc can't be accessed by the WD, but WD hard disc can be accessed by the PC.

I changed the workgroup name on the PC back to the default name WORKGROUP so that the WD and the PC were both using the same name, and everything went back to normal.

Sir Barrister, because of this forum, I decided to acquire this 2011 model and it will be arriving tonight from Dubai.  I have read most of the forum on this pdvd including those for other models and thereafter, since I am not a techie, I am just a plain user, I chose this unit  dahil  "pang simpleng gamit lang" as you said BUT I WANT TO ASK YOU THIS QUESTION:   oK lang ba kung gagamitin ko na lang even without updating its firmware?  Smooth din ba ang performance O TALAGANG DAPAT MAGUPDATE NG FIRMWARE?  Your reply will help me on this new unit, thanks

New firmware update. Nadagdagan ng Netflix and YuppTV. Wonder what else was added?

Although both seem useless to me, it always feels good pag continuous ang support ng manufacturer.

Yes to all you mentioned. Just make sure that the subtitle has the same name as the mkv file and its found in the same folder.

On the latest firmware (1.11.14, Sep. 2012), nawala daw ang 10 mins. skip feature sa avi files, and the video now pauses when "options" is activated.

Sir Barrister, dumating na at natry ko na and it is really well way ahead in terms of features than my two players (Iomega and LG BD 550).  Picture quality, sound quality is better and the thumbnails of each file is making it a very nice looking gadget.  In terms of internet connection, I am temporarily using its wireless thing and I was able to try Youtube, ok naman.  NOW, my meantime problem is "it always hang up" whenever I chose a movie that is not its forte (just ten minutes ago, it hanged up on "The Day the earth stood still").  My question sir is, baka may setting na dapat kong gawin na di ko pa naaaply, kays pls help.  Thanks very much

Sa WD community site, maraming users ang nagrereklamo sa rear USB port when using a USB 3.0 external drive.  Pag nag hang, sabay nadi-disconnect ang drive, then you need to restart para ma connect uli ang drive.

If you're using a USB 3.0 drive, test the front USB port.  Pag OK ang gana using the front USB port, iyan na nga ang issue na yon:

http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Streaming-Issue/SMP-refuses-to-play-1080p-files-from-the-HDD-USB-3-0-connected/idi-p/377519

Have tried using front USB and it made a lot of difference compared to that one at the back.  I tried those movie files that caused the problems of hang ups and there are still some that are not playable, like some m2ts and some mkv.  Thanks for your advice and konti na lang ang problema.
Sir Barrister, alam mo bang kahit mayroong files na hindi piniplay, in love na inlove ako sa unit na ito dahil for the first time in three years na naging media player enthusiast ako, having used two players for my movies, ngayon ko lang natikman na sumigla at nabuhay ng husto ang aking sound system because of how this WDTV (2011) drives my subwoofer and speakers.

The usual problem is on the network rather than on the WD player itself.

WiFi headaches are common.  Try looking for a problem in the network.  First, reset the router and see if it resolves issues.

Na try mo na sir mag stream from a different hard disc?

Large file 1080p?  May mga issues yata pag high bit rate via WiFi.  Sabi ng WD, up to 50Mbps lang ang limit for constant bitrate files.  If variable bitrate, puwedeng mag exceeed ng 50mbps pag nag spike ang bitrate:

No problem... ;D ;D ;D

eto pa isang napansin ko....

mabilis mag upload ngayun mga folders  ;D ;D ;D pero may problem parin...kasi I have 2 1TBwd passport...

before the update parehas nag lo-load sa video option...but constantly hanging...

so my theory....was...since yung nagloload sa video ay nareformat bago malagyan ng mga movies at yung 1 not sure ako kung na reformat ba or hindi bago nilagyan ng movies....pero sa tingin ko hindi kasi pag na open ko sa files ang 1 HDD ko andun yung mga files ng wd passport....

I will not update the firmware anymore, contento na ako sa ngayon, baka magkaproblema pa.  Thanks sir d mark and sir rukawakaide 1721

May bagong problema ngayon.  It doesn't send video signal to my projector.  I have tested again and again but to no avail.  To prove that no line installation is wrongly connected, I made use of my Bluray player and everything is ok.  When I put back the hdmi to the WDTV, still nothing appears.  Please help, baka lang mayroong dapat kalikutin.
Will cite one more issue:  When I play music, I noticed that it will not play if the LCD TV is off, so I will power on the tv so I could listen to music, BUT the thing here is I listen music lying down on the bed with my eyes closed so I do not need the TV.  (With my dvd player and bluray players, I could listen to music even if I turn off the TV after I choose the songs to play).  Why is it that in this WDTV, it is not so?  Do I lack some kalikot on the settings?

Try the WDTV Setup menu.  Setup > Audio/Video Output > Video Output > HDMI > Auto.  Setting might have changed.

If that doesn't work, try another HDMI cable and see if that makes any difference.

If still under warranty, send it back.

How is the audio connected from WD to the speakers?

The connection is all HDMI. I use HDMI from WDTV to my Denon 1909 receiver and also HDMI from receiver to my Samsung TV.  When I want to use my Epson Projector, I will pull out the HDMI of my tv from the Denon's monitor out and then I will insert the HDMI cable of my projector. Kung bakit walang video out from WDTV is nakapagtataka kasi if I use my Bluray player as source, the projector runs smoothly naman kaya I know there is nothing wrong with my present setup.
If we say na sira ang HDMI out ng WDTV, it is not so because if the HDMI goes to the Samsung tv, there is no problem.  I have tried the setup menu, and on the audio video output, I have set it to auto and still nothing doing. It still remains a puzzle to me although I still have faith na I can discover the problem later.  Thanks Sir Barrister for your continuing help without sawa.

Maganda ang advice ni sir Waxx.  Try that first.

You can also try connecting WD straight to projector.

After I enjoyed my WDTV two days ago, I turned it off that night (binunot pati sa outlet).  Yesterday morning, when I turned it on, nag "media library compilation" na naman that took it for 30 minutes AND TO MY SURPRISE, balik sa dati na kailangan naka-on ang TV just to play music (no music kung patay ang TV). Naisip ko na baka dahil hindi ko na "device restart" after "device reset", so ginawa ko ang restart after the device reset.  Afterwards, ok na naman to play music kahit iturn off ang TV.
So to try if I have solved the problem, I turned off again the device (including bunot sa outlet) then after ten minutes, I turned it on again. BALIK NA NAMN SA DATING PROBLEMA, EVEN PLAYING WITH PROJECTOR IS NOT OK.
Kaya ko binubunot sa outlet kasi it is just like bringing it out of town (so bubunutin), and then I will use it there. Dapat di nagbabago ang settings. ANO KAYA ANG KULANG NA KALIKOT?

Mauubusan na yata ako ng ideas ...  :-[

Disable HDMI CEC ---

Go to --- Setup > Audio/Video Output > HDMI CEC > Off

Dahil ang connection ay  WD - HDMI - AV Receiver - HDMI - TV, disable mo rin ang HDMI CEC sa AVR.

=========================================

Ang WD ko, talagang may media library compilation after a full power-down.  So normal lang ang compilation every time you power up.

Try rebuilding the media library to remove possible errors ---

Go to --- Setup > System > Media Library > Clear Media Library.

After clearing, rebuild it --- Setup > System > Media Library > On.

Baka mag-improve ang compilation speed.

This is the step by step moves I did today at 1:35pm:
1. Power On . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1:35pm
2. Finished compiling media library . . . . . . . .  1:42
3. HDMI CEC to on then reboot . . . . . . . . . .  1:44 to 2:00pm  (16 min)
4. Device reset
(connect to internet & compile media
      library)  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2:01 to 2:36     (35 min)
5. Device restart . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2:36 to 2:39     (3 min)
6. Before playing I checked the audio output and it was STEREO  so I changed to HDMI passthru.  Checked the HDMI CEC and it was on default OFF, so I changed to ON but it needs rebooting so it
took 2:41 to 2:47 (6min)

Now presently playing OK to my satisfaction BUT I WILL TURN IT OFF TONIGHT AND PULL OUT FROM OUTLET to see tomorrow if it retained tonight's settings.  Will update again tomorrow.

Turned it on and played music, receiver and tv on. A minute after, I checked to see if it still plays music after I turn off the TV, so I did, and to my disappointment, it stops playing music.  That means IT DID NOT RETAIN THE SETTINGS LAST NIGHT BECAUSE I PULLED IT OUT FROM THE AC PLUG.  That means, if I travel out of town, I will again set it up.
I still believe, I will discover why it is like this, for I know it was not intended to be like this.  Ako lang siguro ang di marunong magsetup.  Tiyaga pa ng konti.

just wondering.. why do you have hdmi cec on sa wdtv? diba cec is parang when you turn on your cec compatible device, the other cec devices under it will also turn on?

from wikipedia:
CEC
Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) is an HDMI feature designed to allow the user to command and control up-to ten CEC-enabled devices, that are connected through HDMI,[94][95] by using only one of their remote controls (for example by controlling a television set, set-top box, and DVD player using only the remote control of the TV).[96] CEC also allows for individual CEC-enabled devices to command and control each other without user intervention.[96][97][98][99][100][101][102]
It is a one-wire bidirectional serial bus that uses the industry-standard AV.link protocol to perform remote control functions. CEC wiring is mandatory, although implementation of CEC in a product is optional.[80] It was defined in HDMI Specification 1.0 and updated in HDMI 1.2, HDMI 1.2a and HDMI 1.3a (which added timer and audio commands to the bus).[96][103][104][105][106] USB to CEC Adapters exist that allow a computer to control CEC enabled devices.[107][108][109][110]
Trade names for CEC are Anynet+ (Samsung); Aquos Link (Sharp); BRAVIA Link and BRAVIA Sync (Sony); HDMI-CEC (Hitachi); E-link (AOC); Kuro Link (Pioneer); CE-Link and Regza Link (Toshiba); RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) (Onkyo); RuncoLink (Runco International); SimpLink (LG); HDAVI Control, EZ-Sync, VIERA Link (Panasonic); EasyLink (Philips); and NetCommand for HDMI (Mitsubishi).[111][112][113][114][115]
The following is a list of HDMI-CEC commands:
One Touch Play: allows devices to switch the TV to use it as the active source when playback starts
System Standby enables users to switch multiple devices to standby mode with the press of one button
Preset Transfer: transfers the tuner channel setup to another TV set
One Touch Record allows users to record whatever is currently being shown on the HDTV screen on a selected recording device
Timer Programming allows users to use the electronic program guides (EPGs) that are built into many HDTVs and set-top-boxes to program the timer in recording devices like PVRs and DVRs

My present setting is HDMI CEC . . .OFF now.  Actually, I had it OFF before since it is its default mode after the DEVICE RESET is done, but because I want to discover why it cannot retain the settings I did, I tried all possible settings, baka matsambahan.  IT DOESN'T CHANGE ITS SETTINGS as long as it is not pulled out from the ac outlet, kaso, puzzled ako why it cannot retain the settings I did even it I "device restart" it after "device reset" is made.  It should.  DI KAYA EPECTO NG NEW FIRMWARE?

hmm i always pull out my device from the outlet kasi napapansin ko if i just turn it off, its still sorta running in the background.. (attached devices dont power off, the unit remains a bit hot etc).. but so far mine doesnt revert to the old settings... or may have not noticed it.. pero ok naman e, kasi default na naka on ang subtitles ko and network thingie..

did you try reflashing the fw?... or maybe, just maybe, may prob ang wdtv mo? baka hindi sinusulat sa system ram yung settings mo.. thats why nawawala.. or try another system reset.

Sir Waxx, you may have not got me fully all along.  My player works fine on all files, music, videos and internet things. The most important issue for me na dapat mangyari are as follows:
   1. That I could play music even if my TV is turned off. . . . . . it stops playing if I do so, so I "device reset" it just so it will work that way.
   2. Without "device reset", the video (thru HDMI) doesn't transmit to the projector,  BUT on the TV, it does. So to play my projector, I have to "device reset" beforehand.  (I have each a HDMI for TV and projector, 20 feet kasi haba ng sa projector, na changeably sinasaksak to the monitor out of the receiver)
   3. As you said, if just plain turning off the WDTV, it remains a little bit hot so I have to pull the plug from the ac outlet.  Then kinabukasan, wa epek na yung settings resulting from the device reset.

For me, pag may problema sa HDMI, dapat mag test muna using HDMI CEC Off.

Kaya sabi ko, Off dapat:

Kung may sariling isip ang HDMI, baka HDMI setup ang kailangan.  Disable HDMI CEC ---

Go to --- Setup > Audio/Video Output > HDMI CEC > Off

Kung hindi WD, dapat hanapin ang settings ng AV receiver and turn off the HDMI CEC on the AV receiver.  Kaya ang sabi ko:

Dahil ang connection ay  WD - HDMI - AV Receiver - HDMI - TV, disable mo rin ang HDMI CEC sa AVR.

Hanapin lahat ng HDMI CEC sa system, and disable all of them.  Kung meron din sa TV, disable the HDMI CEC of the TV.

To isolate the problem, try a direct connection from WD to TV, or WD to projector, to observe what happens when the receiver cannot affect HDMI behavior.

==================================

Am asking my friend kasi to buy me one at Amazon.com ng ganito which I want to try.  Here is the link :  http://www.amazon.com/Sewell-HDMI-Bi-Directional-Switch-Passthrough/dp/B00629NHW6/ref=sr_1_71?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1344730386&sr=1-71&keywords=HDMI+splittert

Sir Barrister and sir waxx, you have been very supportive all the way, thanks for that.
Yesterday, sa sobrang kaiisip how to make it work the way I like, naisip kong tanggalin ang LAN cable for the internet kasi napupuna ko na it takes too long to compile the media library, at kapag walang internet connection, everything is easy. Afterwards, akalain mong naisipan kong "idevice restart" without doing the device reset which took it to reboot in 3 minutes and VOILA, when I played music and turned off the TV, pumwede.
So at night before sleep, I turn it off and pull the plug (just so to have this WDTV very cool in the morning. Warmer kasi pag simpleng turn off lang ng unit).  This morning, when I turned on, and played music ok lang siya at mabilis (di katulad kung connected and LAN cable). So if I need to listen to music with my TV turned off, "idevice restart" ko lang that takes me about 3 minutes, then ok na.
May napuna lang ako na nagbago, when I stop the music, the sounds continues to be heard up to 2 seconds bago mawala, anyway that is just very minor, compared to my week-old problem.
Sa ganda ng PQ and SQ, I will keep this unit with me for a long time pa. THANKS AGAIN

Good to hear that you got that sorted.  I didn't know that you had a wired internet connection.

Try a WiFi.  Iba pa rin ang may internet.  Sarap mag internet radio. ;)

it also has to be exactly the same name apart from being in the same folder e.g superman.mkv = superman.srt

Yes same name. Mp4 kc una yung format ng video file then yung srt pero di nababasa srt so i used a tool called mkvmerge and combined both files to 1 and naging mkv ayun lumalabas na subs via dlna
Title: Re: WD TV Live Streaming
Post by: Timithekid on Dec 06, 2012 at 09:44 AM
Merging would work because it embeds the subtitle, i find it strange though that it wouldnt work without the merge.
Title: Re: WD TV Live Streaming
Post by: Waxx on Dec 06, 2012 at 12:27 PM
maselan ang subtitle detection ng wd..

you need to have the same filename with the exact capitalization.

eg:

if your movie file is TesTinG.123.mkv

your srt should be TesTinG.123.srt

testing.123.srt would not work.

and yes, they have to be at the same folder.
Title: Re: WD TV Live Streaming
Post by: barrister on Dec 06, 2012 at 04:34 PM
In my case, kahit may additional characters ang srt compared with the video file, nadedetect pa rin automatically.

Ganito ang labeling scheme ko for video, srt and movie poster art:

Bourne Legacy, The (2012) .mkv
Bourne Legacy, The (2012)  English.srt
Bourne Legacy, The (2012) .jpg

I use two spaces after the title and before the word "English".

If I use "Bourne Legacy, The (2012) .srt" for the srt file, whenever the movie starts or resumes, there's a mesasage on the upper left corner that says "Subtitle 1: Unknown".

If I use "Bourne Legacy, The (2012) English.srt" for the srt file (only one space after the title and before the word "English"), the message says "Subtitle 1: nglish" --- the "E" in the word "English" does not appear.

So I add another space before the word "English" --- "Bourne Legacy, The (2012)  English.srt".  Whenever the movie starts or resumes, the mesasage now correctly says, "Subtitle 1: English"

=========================================

The best pa rin ang external srt for subtitles.

If you have external srt subtitles and you want to edit the subtitles, madali lang.  Kasi external text-based file lang yon.  If it's already muxed in the mkv container, problema ang subtitle editing pag may napansin kang errors later. You'll have to demux from the mkv, then edit, then remux again.  In my case, I have to redo the srt file to edit, since tsMuxer demuxes the srt as an sup file.

why does my wd tv live streaming can't detect my harddisk connected to my airport extreme base station router when I scan it via "Windows Shares" and "Linux Shares"?
I have successfully connected the wdtv on my Wi-Fi network. My movie files are kept in my airport disk, I would like the wdtv to stream the movie/video file from that disk.
Ano ba ang dapat na settings for those who have a same set-up?

May useful difference ang short press "Off" = SLEEP vs. 5 secs. press & hold "Off" = OFF.

Pag naka-SLEEP, puwede ka pa rin mag access ng USB HD ng WD via computer, or use iPhone or Android phone to turn on (wake up) the unit via WiFi.

Pag naka-OFF, totally off.   You can't access the HD via PC or turn on via cellphone app through WiFi.

I think pareho lang yun WDTV Live, WDTV Live Air, and WDTV Live Play--newer version lang yung Play.  I've never seen Air so it must be a region-specific release.

Anyway, if you're big on watching content streamed live over the Internet, skip WDTV and go with Roku 3.  WDTV Live has very few channels available.

I love watching webcasts so I would love to have a media player where I can watch Twit, CNET, Revision3, etc.

Fellow WDTV Live owners,...

I have 2 WDTV Live, and 4 WD My Book Essential 3TB hard drives,
as well as a 300mbps internet connection,
then that's about it, am I missing something na pwede kong gawin sa media player ko,..? Or even maximize my internet speed,..? I would love to have at least 3 or more hard drives plugged in on a single player, is that even possible in the case of the WDTV,..?

Am pretty sure may mga sumubok na dito sa atin, hope you can share your opinions,...

Thanks,...

Live Streaming na sir yung WDTV player mo?  I remember your old post, sabi mo yata mas preferred mo yung old model WDTV (2nd Gen, no internal WiFi adapter).

I haven't tried it yet, pero madali lang yata using a USB hub.  AFAIK, USB hub is supported in Gen. 3 WDTV players, but not in Gen. 1 and Gen. 2 players.

I have the WD TV Live Streaming Media Player (Gen 3) and can report that it cannot read Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader properly. It does read the card reader that comes with EyeFi.

Current firmware Release 2.02.32 (8/11/2014) (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfwdtv_live_G3).

Correct sir, hindi ko pa rin ginagamit sa network ko ang WDTV Live ko, nadala na kasi ako nuon ng mag-update ako ng firmware, though I bought a newer model, hindi ko lang alam kung Gen 2 ito o Gen 3, but the idea of having USB hub working on the WD is indeed a solution sa problema ko sa kakulangan ng USB input nya,... Happy New Year, brader!

Napakagulo ng WDTV magpangalan ng devices.  Yung unang labas nila, gloss black, nagkaroon ng Gen 1 and Gen. 2.  Tapos naging WDTV Live, then Live Gen 2.  Then WDTV Live Streaming (Gen 3).

Live Gen. 2 --- Flat silver, small remote, no front USB:

Live Streaming Gen. 3 -- Flat black, big remote, with front USB:

http://www.avsforum.com/forum/39-networking-media-servers-content-streaming/1364999-official-wd-tv-live-streaming-media-player-thread-91.html#post23210464 (http://www.avsforum.com/forum/39-networking-media-servers-content-streaming/1364999-official-wd-tv-live-streaming-media-player-thread-91.html#post23210464)

Guys I can confirm na gumagana ang USB Hub sa Gen 3, with firmware version 2.02.32
I have no idea though kung mahalaga ang brand ng hub, and unfortunately, hindi ko matandaan kung saan ko binili itong ginagamit ko, I'll post a pic of the hub later,...

Made me happy at madadagdagan ang hard drive na maisasaksak ko sa WDTV ko,...

Post by: ABCmotorparts on Feb 08, 2015 at 01:18 AM
Here's a story for you guys, and maybe you can even help me out with some of my questions as well, to sum up my complete setup, I have 2 WD players, like the ones shown above, I have a WD TV Live Gen 2, and a WD TV Live streaming Gen 3, I am only using the G3 sa current setup ko, pa-simplehin na na lang natin, sabihin na lang natin na 2 external hard drive ang nakasaksak sa mga USB ports nya, both hard drives are 3TB, partitioned to 1.5TB each dahil alam kong hindi kayang basahin ng WD ang over 2TB...
Both HD are WD My Book Essentials, now the fun begins...

One of the hard drives is already full, kaya hindi ko na sya ginagalaw, however yung isang HD ko ay may kaunti pang space, and duon ko inilalagay ang mga latest copies ng movies, but somehow, nabubulag madalas ang G3 at hindi nya nakikita ang bagong lipat na files, kahit pa burahin ko na ang wdtv ini file, minsan, I had to reset the whole system a couple of times, sometimes more, bago basahin ang folder, sometimes, its helps kung iclear muna ang media library, though I always set it sa OFF para mas  mabilis maiload ang files. But again, sometimes, hindi pa rin makuha at I had to factory reset it again ng ilang beses.

Now, dahil natutunan ko kay Atty. Barrister na pwede na palang gamitan ng USB hub ang G3, I installed one, and bought an extra 2TB (same kind, WD My Book Essential), plugged it in agad, wala ng format format pa, basta lagay lang agad ng movie, VOILA, walang sablay sa mga unang files, binasa at naiplay pa,... connection now is like this, all 3 hard drives are connected to the USB hub, so may libre akong isang USB port ulit. I have to put in a new file, todas,..!

I called WD tech support PLENTY of times to inquire, hindi rin nila masagot kung bakit hindi basta copy file, plug and play ang mga files sa G3, all they advise is the SOP na factory reset or firmware upgrade, but other than that, they have no idea whatsoever,...

So, any idea why,...?

Cheers,...

To all WDTV users, please take the WDTV survey.

It looks like they're planning to release a new version in maybe a few years, but they want to study survey results first to help them design it:

Nangyayari yan sa corrupted file.

Kung lahat ng file ganon, unlikely na corrupted lahat ang movie files mo.  Baka sira na ang hard disk kaya nahihirapang bumasa ang player.

Pag sira ang hard disk, pumapalya paminsan-minasan yan.  Then it gets progressively worse.

Try reading the SMART data of the hard disk with Crystaldiskinfo:

http://download.cnet.com/CrystalDiskInfo/3000-2086_4-10832082.html (http://download.cnet.com/CrystalDiskInfo/3000-2086_4-10832082.html)

Also try copying a few files on another hard disk and playing them on the WDTV.

The one I'm very used to is the 2011 Gen 3.  Too bad I'm not familiar with the 2014 Gen 4.

I recommend searching for solutions on the WD Community: http://community.wd.com/ (http://community.wd.com/)

I tried searching for you, and this is what I came up with:

http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Streaming/WD-TV-Live-stops-playing-files/m-p/830178/highlight/true#M34370 (http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Streaming/WD-TV-Live-stops-playing-files/m-p/830178/highlight/true#M34370)

See message 7 on that page (by user Techflaws).  You seem to be having his bug #3:

playing any proper file right after bootup results in "Unable to play selected file. Please see the User Manual for a list of supported formats".
This bug seems to have been introduced with the 2.x firmware and is also present on the current WD TV. It's not reproducible but it appears to be connected to the TV not being tuned to the WDTV during boot
solution: powercycle or apply KAD79's
reset everything script (http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Streaming/WDTV-Reset-EVERYTHING/m-p/845085#U845085).

Click the link to KAD79's "reset everything" so that you can do a true full reset.

I don't know if it will work, but it's worth a try.

Have a few questions on the latest WD player:

1. Can it read BD movies and menus?
2. How about .iso files?
3. What can an Egreat S800 do that the latest WD cant, and/or vice versa?
4. All audio movie formats (DTS, DD, DTS HD, DTS HDSMA and etc) can be played and passed through my Yammy 573 via HDMI?
5. How does WD Live Streaming differ and compare with the latest WD TV?

Thanks guys.

And, just a follow up question:

I have read several (but old) forum posts and articles saying the four bay probox does not work well with the WD media player. It only detects the HDD on the first bay.

Is this issue still true for the current and latest generation of the WD TV? I am planning to get this already but if my existing Probox 4bay wont work, I would have to look for another brand of player sadly.

Re-posting here my query at the WD community forum as some of you might be able to help.

As some of you may remember, I was researching on the WD TV as to wether it would be compatible with a 4-bay enclsoure such as the probox. This was the thread I started back then:

http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-TV-Media-Player/WD-TV-compatibility-with-Probox-4-Bay-Enclosure/td-p/8...

Unfortunantely, I never got a concerte answer if it was compatible or not so I jumped the gun and bought a WD TV last week. To be sure, I brought along my Probox 4 bay enclosure to test.

At the shop. we tested it and, to my surpise, it worked. It detected all 4 x 4TB HDDs installed in my Probox. Without even thinking more, I bought the WD TV and brought it home. It worked for a few days until I decided to laod new media files on the HDDs. I ejected each drive one by one and installed them in my desktop. Trasnferred files and then slapped it back on the Probox. To my utter dismay, it no longer detected any single drive. I tried all sorts of configuration, switching each HDD from its respective slots, tried combos of only 1, 2, and 3 HDDs only but nothing. When you attach the enclosure, the WD TV identifies it and gives the "connecting to USB..." notification but it doesnt show any of the drives.

I already tried reformating, scanning for erros and/or bad sectors. I tried taking out the .wdtv folder already but, sad to say, nothing.

To make sure and rule out any other problems, I tried each and every HDD with my PC. I also tried the enclosure with my PC and my laptop, no sweat, detected each and every HDD. I then tried a USB thumb drive and my portable HDD with my WD TV and it worked like a charm.

Now, if the Probox isnt compatible with the WD TV, why did it work for the first few days? If its compatible, what seems to be wrong with my setup.

Any advise or throughts would be much appreciated. I literally spent two days testing each and every possible problem to no avail and it is quite frustrating.

Frustrated and disappointed WD TV new owner.

Yup, tried both front and rear USB ports. Upon booting WD TV, it only says l connecting to USB device " but it won't show any HDD either at the video section or at the disk mgmt section.

Sorry, I forgot to mention, I updated the unit to the latest FW to.  In fact, that was the first thing I did with the unit before attaching any external device.

If you're already on the latest firmware, try a rollback to the one that is 2nd latest.  You will need a USB thumb drive.

If your unit is a 2011 Gen. 3 WDTV SMP, that's 2.01.86.  If 2014 Gen. 4 WDTV Media Player, that's 1.01.30:

Thanks Barrister. Will try to do that.

It just made me think, why it worked for the first few days but not after I added media to the HDDs. To my mind, if it worked the first time around with the latest FW, then it should work. Be that as it may, will try as well your suggestion buddy.

I've read about a similar "connecting to USB" problem that was solved by replacing the USB cable.

It was only a single external HDD via USB, not a multi-bay enclosure, but the principle should be the same, in case the USB cable is the source of the problem.

Noted on that one. Will check that out as well should rolling back of firmware won't work. I'll do the rolling back this afternoon.

Just to update everyone, the Probox is working now with the 4th gen WD TV. What I did was to roll back the firmware.

Cheers,...
ABC

Well just out of curiousity, I bought a WD TV, the latest version with an installed firmware ver. 1.02.17

With my Gen 3, it can somehow play REMUX FILES, but sometimes may stutter and crashing lalo pag lumalagpas na ng 30gb ang file size,... So I decided to do some research kung ano ang pwede ipalit sa kanya, kaya lang halos lahat na pala ng media player ngayon ay ANDROID na ang OS, hindi kasi ako sanay sa interface ng mga android.

So I ended up with the newest WD TV, and I LOVE THIS small player, lahat ng file ay kayang kayang iplay ng walang sabit.

I would never recommend any other player than the WD TV,...

But seriously, maganda na ang performance ng bagong WD TV, walang arte ang interface, and for a fraction of the price ng ibang brand sa market di ba...

Regards sir...

Same here. I have a Probox with 4 x 4TB attached to it and every time I turn the WDTV on, it always re-compiles the media library even though I haven't changed anything with the drives nor have I disconnected them.

That used to happen to me before,

That happened to me once, you need to reinstall a working firmware via thumbdrive,
once it detects a compatible firmware, it'll do the rest,...
Good luck...

Let's say your using a WD TV. Your file is a Blu-ray which mas working menus. Obviously the media player won't do menus. How do you guys skip the menu page or play the movie?

I have about several of these kind of files which I can't play and am just stuck at the menu page

If you have a blu-ray iso file then you could expand it into a folder containing the blu-ray folder structure. You could try drilling down into the individual folders and try playing them one-by-one. The blu-ray folder structure is here- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray#Directory_and_file_structure (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray#Directory_and_file_structure). Your best bet would be the files under the STREAM directory.

Thanks. How do I access sub folders?

It's a full Blu-ray file with supposed working menus.

Thus, when I click on the folder, it brings me to the menu at once and couldn't play the movie itself.
