Ateneo is good, but not undefeatable. Their preseason game with DLSU was an embarrassment. I don't know if it was jetlag or what, but DLSU simply dismantled their offense and defense. Watching that game was just painful.
Fearless Forecast: Ateneo vs Adamson for the 2011 UAAP Finals.
NCAA: i dont like the way San Beda's approach to rule the NCAA by recruiting imports to play for their school.
its ok if they recruit talents from the provinces rather than getting these vehemonths from the States, etc.
thats unfair to the schools who doesnt have the budgets to recruit foreign players from other countries.
sobrang madaya may fil ams na, may negro pa.
this is only a collegiate tourney so it should be all filipino to give balance to the league.
Not only San Beda but some other schools as well like UP's Morian Gingerich (American), Ateneo's Kirk Long (American), La Salle's Indonesian Ferdinand, FEU's Noundou (Cameroonian). NU has gotten yata the son of former import Bobby Parks. And many more. But the most scrutinized are the Nigerians, African Americans kasi nga sila lang yun talagang mukhang imported. The rest like Kirk Long, hindi halatado.
The rule in the UAAP / NCAA is clear : "A player is considered a foreigner in the NCAA/ UAAP if he doesn’t have a single trace of Filipino blood. The league rulebook states that each team can have a maximum of two foreigners on their 16-man roster but they cannot be fielded in at the same time. Foreigners should also serve a two-year residency or should have studied at least two consecutive years in the country before being allowed to suit up" If they're legit players, they can play.
I think this is not a huge problem. The bigger problem is some schools recruiting players na hindi naman talaga students meaning, talagang kinuha lang for the game. Yun iba overage, tapos ni walang high school diploma then ginawang japeyks lang para makapagaral ng college at makapaglaro ng basketball. IMO, yun ang bawal kasi ma fraud involved.
in my personal opinion, dpat higpitan un screening ng mga foreign players.
if they are really foreign students here and are already enrolled, they should be allowed to play.
Kirk Long has been in the Phil since his Faith Academy days so matagal na sya resident here, even in the PBA he should be an exemption to the rule sulit naman un stay ksi nya dto sa Pinas.
Un San Beda naman ksi its very obvious they have try outs in the States to select their import para mg aral at mglaro dto.
un anak naman ni Parks considered as Fil-am un so pwede na rin.
i just hope other schools can recruit from the provinces the likes of CALVIN ABUEVA, RR GARCIA, etc

On the argument that locals are being deprived of playing time, if they were good in the first place then you have no worries about getting into the team. i.e. Kiefer Ravena. Even if he was competing against ray parks jr. in the same team, he'd still get playing time. Talent shines through whatever race, social class, etc.
First time I saw Ravena play live last Sunday at the Filoil Arena. This guy's got game. I was so impressed (even If I rooted for the opposing team) that when I saw Bong the dad, I immediately congratulated and told him how good his son is ;D Sabi ko kay Bong, "madami papahirapan yang anak mo Bong..."
I was also at Fil-oil last sunday and i have seen live, Kiefer play against SBC twice. He's 5'11 and in the first game against SBC, coach frankie lim threw numerous defenders (taller) to try and stop him. he scored 24pts. that game.
I also saw the game live when he requested that he guard Ray Parks and there was one fast break opportunity that he wanted to dunk to show off but Ray parks caught up and blocked him cleanly which resulted in a mid-air collision with bodies banging loudly against each other. talk about talent and balls. If i'm not mistaken, he was voted as best forward in the last under 18 fiba-asia tournament and part of the mythical five of that tournament.
I would assume you're an Eagle ;D Good thing my Lions won't have to face your team. Haha. Good luck.
Haha! yes sir! Good luck to your team's campaign in the NCAA as well.
btw, very good crowd support for SBC last sunday. Impressed with the balloons and the cheerleaders coming out to support your team.
i wonder how this year's SAN BEDA team will fair now that Sudan Daniels is injured and that their newly recruited import is still serving the 1 year residence.
Should they win, then they will prove me and the critics wrong, but should they lose, then it can be concluded that they arent good enough w/o an import.
I actually thought a few UAAP games would be played at the MOA Arena, since the SM conglomerate now owns NU and is part of the board.
Btw, the Parks kid may need to red shirt for another year. Slaughter has been deemed eligible. A few players have changed allegiances, too.

my guess is they will struggle this time. They have a very good PG then in Hermida and the imports, i believe hermida is not playing anymore.
it pains me that UST after the four peat di na nakapag perform ng maganda kay pag UAAP basketball di na ako masyado an excite, nood lang without emotion.
i'm also from UST. it saddens me coz they havent done the proper recruitments to solidify their team in the past seasons?
kulang tlga sa BIG MEN plus an explosive point guard.
during my college days in UST we have the best players (home grown pa wlang IMPORTS or Fil-ams), halos lahat ng members reached the PBA, evangelista, bal david, edmund reyes, rudolf belmonte, tanquinsen, espino, cantonjos, etc.
My wife and my brothers are from UST. The last championship was versus Ateneo several years ago, right? Ateneo was 1-0 and then UST pulled off a stirring back to back win. Magaling na coach(and player) si Pido Jarencio. But yes, kulang lang sa tao talaga.
It's all above-board & legal, but it just doesnt make for a level-playing field (La Salle even had Mike Gonzales then, a US-based player agent who scouts & recruits Filams). LET ME PARAPHRASE A COMMENT FROM A PDVD MEMBER : "On the argument that locals are being deprived of playing time, if they were good in the first place then you have no worries about getting into the team. i.e. Kiefer Ravena. ** SAN BEDA's recent recruitment of African-based players had set a (bad?) precedent, as many other collegiate teams had followed suit. OTHERS LIKE FEU AND DLSU HAVE BEEN RECRUITING SINCE THE EARLY 70'S AND 80'S. THIS IS NOTHING NEW. I THINK IT WAS JUST MAGNIFIED BY SAN BEDA BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN WINNING.
I'm in no way a SAN BEDA basher .... I think that their local crew (sans the other players) is pretty solid & would still be among the contenders. SALAMAT AND SANA'Y MAGKATOTOO ;D!

sir im a good friend of udoy belmonte, magkasama kami sa engineering, graduated 1992.
it seems UST is not able to lure good players because of the highly commercialized way of recruiting players nowadays, huge allowance, board and lodging so blue chip players ends up with the school that can offer lucrative package
same is true with Volleyball.
sir mattia is it ok to also discuss volleyball in this thread? since UST has not been that good in basketball, I have shifted my liking to volleyball moreso on WVT not juts becasue of the pretty players but WV in our country has improved a lot. Reason why I opened this up was becasue of how NU was able to get two excellent players from UST and this is becasue of lucrative offers they gave the players.
I think the manner of recruitment nowadays has really gone too commercialized but just the same, Im sure there will still be players who will not be lured by this but by the school pride so he will still end up playing for a particular school he really wants too.
I'm done watching UAAP years ago when I heard players selling games from different sides. Parang nangyayari na yung nangyari dati sa PBA na puro imports, o kung sa liga mga "dukot" ;D It's all about the money now, not school pride. Since ABS-CBN aired NCAA and UAAP, that was it. They capitalized on that craze, gone are the pure telecast of Trillo and Javier kahit primitive pa. And basketball only gives the big limelight, volleyball once in a while pag tsix ang mga players tulad sa Ateneo ;D
By all means. Volleyball, Swimming, what have you. It's a free for all thread actually. It's just that, being a basketball crazy nation, mas madami lang talaga mahilig sa basketball. But go ahead. Start the discussion! I want to be in the know as well. Especially that you mentioned pretty players ;D You got me interested.
ATENEO
Gretchen Ho
Fille Cainglet
Bea Pascual
this is what i feel is happening but probabaly because UST never had the chance to land excellent players, i just hope players will releive those days wherein players are really playing for pride, i could still recall the times when Ateneo and La Salle are fighting it out the era of the canlas' was it for ateneo or perhaps the times when locsin or limpot was still playing.
Basketball observer here since the 80's ...... my humble 2-cents on above discussions:
** I too was not so high on SAN BEDA's recruitment of African-based players the past few years ..... same with DLSU's heavy Fil-Am recruitment during the 90's (Cortez, Cardona, Allado, Wilson, Castro, Ramos, Jose, etc) & to an extent ADMU (Alvarez, Cruz, etc).
It's all above-board & legal, but it just doesnt make for a level-playing field (La Salle even had Mike Gonzales then, a US-based player agent who scouts & recruits Filams).
I recall ADMU's Fr. Calauag writing an open-letter of sorts, years ago ..... his observations were that Filam player recruitment might send the wrong message & could displace equally-deserving homegrown players. He admitted that ADMU & a few other schools were active into the Filam recruitment.
** SAN BEDA's recent recruitment of African-based players had set a (bad?) precedent, as many other collegiate teams had followed suit.
I'm in no way a SAN BEDA basher .... I think that their local crew (sans the other players) is pretty solid & would still be among the contenders.
** UST had great results in the 90's via their UST-HS & regional-based recruitment. Aric Del Rosario (and FEU's past coaches) preferred Pampanguenos with a sprinkling of Visayas-based players.
UST & FEU (and UE) still pretty much gets players the same way ..... unfortunately, the other teams had notched up their own systems.
DLSU's Filam recruitment had waned through the years replaced by solid recruitment from mostly NCAA junior teams, elevating standout HS players (Maierhofer, Webb, etc) & recently, a very lucky coincidence of having then coach F.Pumaren, as a Phil Youth Team head coach.
ADMU meantime went several notches higher ...... strategic recruitment from great provincial based programs (Baclao, Slaughter, etc).
As for NU having Ray Parks Jr ..... let's just say, that I dont think that Parks Jr. will shun a US NCAA Division I school, if the Paguia family were still running NU. Having the richest Filipino as owner, will do wonders for NU's athletic progams.

This is a short list, imho. It should be longer. :D
Nagkakagulo pa UAAP regardin sa eligibility ni Slaughter and Parks.
I feel they should just let them play since they're Fil-Ams.
What should should prohibit are those IMPORTS mostly from Africa nowadays.
^ nagkakagulo sila dahil lahat sila gusto kunin si Slaughter and Parks, kaso NU is now owned by Lucio Tan and Bobby Parks is their sports coordinator...saan ka pa? ;D
San Beda was at the helm for some time until MP came in...in reality the more budget you have the more good players you get. They buy them?..absolutely. And with Ateneo out of MP's mind...it's all San Beda getting all the moolah.
FilAms killed the PBA, I just hope it wont happen in the NC/UA.

for me ok lng fil-ams to spice up the leagues but NO NO to imports coz this is just the collegiate level where young aspirants should be exposed to competitions.
wla na ba sila mahanap sa mga far away provinces in search of raw talents w/c they can improve and create an impact in later years? SAn Beda w/ MVP has the money to invest on that Badtrip lng tlga to see them get IMPORTS that make the league inbalance.
napapagaya tuloy un other schools.
UST from what i know is also parading two African imports and also 1 from UP.
The leagues should put an end to this to give much exposure for home grown talents.
sayang lng un mga gnagawang camps ng NIKE eh ang dami naman pwede hugutin dun na talents from different schools nationwide.
for UST, quite dissapointing to me to see how jeric teng plays, i have been reading and hearing in the past that this guy is a superstar in the junior's league and can easily score 50 points a game but everytime i get the chance to see UST play last year, i dont think he is really good.or is it a case of not getting the good breaks really?
with slaughter now cleared to play, Ateneo will be hard to beat, they are the defending champion yet they added a very tall player at 6'11" and pehaps the best player coming from the juniors keiffer ravena
by the way sino na ba ang best center, forward and pointguard ngayon sa UAAP?
Yup, Teng has been somewhat of a disappointment ...... he was tearing up the junior Chinoy leagues - but even then wasn't seen as tough as past products like Yeo, Tang, etc. Let's hope he improves dramatically this season.
Besides, scoring prowess in junior leagues isn't really an accurate guage for seniors .... many past super-scorers e.g. recently UST's Dizon, who was scoring 40pts regularly, yet became just average senior players.
Right of the bat, FEU's Ramos & ADMU's Slaughter should be the top centers .... fowards are ADU's Colina & ADMU's Salva ..... PG is defintely FEU's Garcia (AFAIK Paul Lee will not play his final year).
going back to jeric teng, is jeron teng joining UST this year or next year? i wish UST can find a very good talent or is it UST needing a new coach?
tyvm sir newwave, guess i have not been paying much attention to the games as I dont know the players you have mentioned anymore
going back to jeric teng, is jeron teng joining UST this year or next year? i wish UST can find a very good talent or is it UST needing a new coach?
AFAIK Jeron is still in HS ..... however, I have a gut feeling that he wont choose UST once he makes it to the seniors.
Like I said in my earlier post, UST has always been consistent in it's recruitment practices - majority are from Pampanga (Aric Del Rosario's backyard), while the rest come from Visayas & NCR junior leagues & a few top-rated UST Pay High talents ..... by the way, UST & ADMU used to be the only schools who elevate most of their HS players, with other perennial contenders content to raid mostly the Ato Badolato-school of great HS players (SBC Juniors).
It's just the other schools have taken their recruitment system a few notches higher.
DLSU's 90's Filam recruitment had waned through the years replaced by solid recruitment from mostly NCAA junior teams, elevating standout HS players (Maierhofer, Webb, etc) & just recently, had a very lucky coincidence of having ex-coach Franz Pumaren serve as Phil Youth Team head coach.
ADMU had strategic recruitment from great Senior provincial based leagues (Baclao, Slaughter, etc).
I do agree that Jarencio needs to go ..... offense is stagnant despite the guard-based lineup. UST has recently been a nice source of good basketball coaches e.g. Tanquincen, Favis, Chua, etc ..... maybe it can convince one of them to give the UAAP a try (Favis was a good amateur coach, led Letran & UST Juniors to 'chips).
oh isnt it that binky also coached sa MBA? sana nga tulungan naman nila ang UST,
I was sruprised to know Eric Altamirano na pala coach ng NU, talagang very aggresive ang NU sawa na din siguro sa palaging sila ang whipping boys before pero ngayon mukhang UST na ang nasa lugar na yun, Chua is ALfrancis right? I also like that guy sya yung coach ng Tanduay sa PBA , nasan na kaya mag yan sila ang kalingan ng UST ngayon, pag panonoorin mo mga laro ng UST, walang kabuhay buhay, para ka lang nanonood ng limahan sa kanto
Hehe, great observations on UST's recent basketball showing ...... it's spot on. Stagnant & not enough effort compared to the old days of Bal David, Dale Singson, etc.
Cant recall if Binky Favis ever coached in the MBA ........ he was a good-defensive coach in the pros but was solid in the amateurs leading Letran & Juniors to 'chips.
Yup, that's Alfrancis Chua ...... one of the more hot-headed coaches out there, but has swagger that rubs off on his players ..... guys like Webb, Rubi, Cantonjos, Telan, Gallent, etc had very decent PBL stints because of Chua.
You're correct ..... NU is sparing no expense in trying to make an impact in the UAAP. Eric Altamirano is a decent motion-offense coach ..... was a disciple of Jacobs for a time.
Like I said, I dont think that Ray Parks Jr. will shun a US NCAA Division I school, if the old Paguia family were still running NU. Having the richest Filipino as owner, will do wonders for NU's athletic progams.
i hope if UST fares badly this season(hard pill to swallow but i think they will) first thing that the management will do is replace the coach. Its very important to have blue chip players but UST's current line up is not bad at all but potentials are not maximized. I happen to watch one of their practices sometime and they have good moves. Having a fiery coach for them would stir up things and perhaps bring up the best in the players.
as regards NU, they were able to get great volleyball players from UST and FEU. From UST, the most promising rookie Dindin Santiago, who is very instrumental in the UST WVT championship two seasons ago was convinced by NU to transfer together with her sister, who was in high school, then from UST too. Dindin stands 6'1" while the sister is 6' 3"
from FEU, they got Mumay Vivas and Monique Tiangco, both star players of FEU
perhaps! kaya lang it may also backfire. remember ateneo under joe lipa? hindi sanay na namumura yung mga players kaya kahit na gano kaganda yung program ni lipa e hindi sila nagchampion under lipa. nung tinigbak si lipa nagchampion agad sila using the lipa program.

I played 2 yrs under Coach Joe Lipa in High School. I played in the same league that produces Atoy Co, Lim Eng Beng, Benny Cheng, Joseph Yeo, Chris Tiu, TY Tang, Justin Chua, Jeric Teng. We won our 1st Championship because of him. I had my best years under this highly volatile coach. All i can say is that he had a hard time dealing with SUPERSTARS but certainly a great motivator to under rated players that plays with a lot of heart.
but the thing is the coach was replaced,
UST is not getting anywhere not even close to a final four
Pido is one fiery coach.. medyo toned down lang siya pagdating sa UAAP kasi mga bata.. he handled Max Bond in the recent PBA D-League with most of his UST players and there was a game where he got ejected kasi hinamon niya ng suntukan yung coach ng kalaban.. I don't think Pido lacks the fire to motivate his players.. nasa players na talaga yung kulang.. no matter how good you are, kung wala ka talagang puso maglaro, wala rin..
I remember a game last season yata yun where UST was up big tapos nahabol.. at a crucial point in the game, Pido was asking his PG to set up a play pero ang ginawa ng PG, tumira ng tres with still over 16 seconds sa shot clock.. ayun airball.. the next play, the guy did the same thing.. nasabon tuloy ni Pido nung timeout..
but since they have already won a championship with Pido, I guess the real problem lies with the players. I guess I agree with boredfilmmaker.

UST has a shot at the Final four this season.. that Ferrer guy from their juniors team is good.. payat pero may galaw at may tira sa labas.. umaayos na rin decision making ni Fortuna.. Teng is erratic at times pero at least palagi siyang aggressive.. they can make a run at that last spot sa final four with the lineup they have..
Ateneo and FEU for me are shoo-ins in the final four.. Adamson and La Salle, malaki rin chances but I wouldn't be surprised if one of them won't make it.. As for my UP, manalo lang ng isang game masaya na ako.. spoiler lang naman sila eh.. bawi na lang sa Cheerdance competition.. ;D
but he was replaced by someone who simply continued his program sans the verbal abuse. and they won. so it seems the problem is that the coach and the players don't see eye-to-eye. but since they have already won a championship with Pido, I guess the real problem lies with the players. UST for me would still finish around 6th place (they finished 7th last year i think). They may have Kevin Ferrer but he is still too raw and too lean to be an inside presence. They have a nigerian import who is a hot head but might be effective in the inside but they will still come up short. Their guys have poor shot selection. They live and die by the three. Pido is a good motivator, etc. but he's not a good coach overall in devising plays, etc.

this is what i thought, i dont think pido has the technical skills to design good plays.
But that is what assistant coaches are for, design good offensive and defensive plays and suggest a specific play to him during actual games when the situation warrants it.
But I guess a few more losing seasons and he would be replaced. Coaching is one job which has no security in tenure.
magchampion naman sana ang UP Maroons...
di ung puro aral lang... :)

GO LA SALLE! :D
Adamson couldn't score in the last 7 minutes of play. On defense alone, it seems like Ateneo is already on course for a 4-peat.Adamson should count the # of 3pt shot attempts they did in the 2nd half. 90% yata 3pts e. Sindak kay slaughter. ;D
In Slaughter, I see shades of Ford Arao, but with better defense and 6 inches extra in height.
Ravena hasn't revealed himself yet as he got really gun-shy.
It does seem that, even without Salamat or Buenafe, the Blue Eagles is the team to beat in Season 74.
I am not happy with the way Ateneo depended on Slaughter too much. That's just insecure basketball.
Slaughter is a walking mismatch, hence Black is utilizing him early on ...... anytime you get a guy that tall with decent hands & decent offense - you use him as much as possible.
He'll have his fair share of hiccups being a "rookie" to the UAAP ..... but once he get's the hang of it, he will make the game a lot easier for his teammates.
^ Yup .... and Black is a good-enough coach to know these things (see early success of Slaughter via pick-rolls with Monfort ) ..... Black has always been a very good big-man coach.
I agree that it's imperative that they break-in Slaughter now while it's early ..... games will get a lot tighter as the finish approaches & top-2 slots are within sight.
Feu beats La Salle.
Ateneo defeats Adamson.
I thought it was only Salamat who would be gone from the Ateneo line-up but it seems Buenafe is also gone, two of Ateneo's go-to-guys at crucial time. I guess it will not be a walk in the park for Ateneo after all.
buenafe is gone for now because he is overweight
this is to me the worst way you get out of the line up, way lacking in discipline
i think buenafe has been having some difficulties coping up with his school's academic requirements.
heard that Buenafe is going back to Baste, while Delacruz to Beda again..
Art Dela Cruz going back to San Beda is confirmed. He's practicing with them already.
There were rumors going around that Buenafe wanted to go back to Baste for a "fresh" start. But he's still in the ateneo atending to his classes.
The problem with Buenafe is, he's a genius at basketball but has never developed the work ethic to truly develop his full potential. Compared to Nico Salva who is a workhorse, we can see his development to a very good forward and if not one of the best in the UAAP for his generation.
Also, I wouldn't worry about Ateneo's game against ADU. Admu always starts the season slow and arguably Adamson is quite good with a very underrated coach. We'll start seeing fluidity on the offensive plays and cohesiveness on defense.
I'm just gonna relax and watch how the season unfolds. I'm only gonna push the panic button if ateneo gets 3 losses already in the first round. but until then, i'm just gonna enjoy the ride.

The problem with Buenafe is, he's a genius at basketball but has never developed the work ethic to truly develop his full potential. Compared to Nico Salva who is a workhorse, we can see nico's development to a become a truly good forward and if not one of the best in the UAAP for his generation.
I'm only gonna push the panic button if ateneo gets 3 losses already in the first round. but until then, i'm just gonna enjoy the ride.
but Ryan has the heart of a Champion, he's cool under pressure and always deliver when his team needed him most, look at what he did last year against FEU in the finals. binuhat nya un team Ateneo. i also remembered the up and under hang time move he did when they were down against dindo pumaren's UE w/c he also won for the eagles.
Salamat, Buenafe, Dela Cruz. Three players who are not afraid to shoot. Three players who are not afraid to drive into the painted area. Three players who can post-up. Three players who are not afraid to go head-to-head and toe-to-toe with the opposing player. These are not minor losses, these are big losses.
Salva has a decent outside shot. But he's not that good a post-up player nor does he have an explosive first step which will allow him to leave his guard behind. He doesn't even have the heft to overpower those who guard him. What he has is the "yabang" and self-confidence to do good.
Kirk Long has his days but not on a steady basis. Chua is good offensively but is not intimidating defensively. Monfort will not back down from anybody. The other players have been contented in the roles they play. And with the entry of Slaughter and Ravena, they might even be more contented playing second-fiddle to them.
Their real test probably would come from FEU's in-your-face defense and La Salle's pesky full-court press.
Ateneo may be a contender but definitely not a shoo-in!
Buenafe is a closer, somethibg that Ray Parks would need to learn.
Buenafat also has high basketball IQ and awareness, something that Ravena needs to demonstrate in the UAAP.
Agree with above posts ..... Ryan Buenafe has good basketball sense & has that mental toughness about him. Plus for someone with that huge build, he sure has decent mobility & handling.
It could be a sad story should the kid ignore his conditioning ..... he looks like he'll be a decent pro someday.
I'm kinda reminded of a similar case ..... Gerard Francisco from some years back. The guy had a similar build & skillset with Buenafe, but was a tad bit more mobile & was a much better shooter.
Francisco had a decent pro career, even lead his team to it's first 'chip. However, the guy had very poor conditioning & was disinterested in training ..... hence his pro career didn't last that long.
A good friend was a PBA team PT for many years & can attest to this (he also confirms that Marlou Aquino was president of the All-Lazy team).
Kiefer Ravena with a monster first half against DLSU today. He looked like he was ready to jump to the pros on that one game alone.
La Salle must be regretting not keeping him way back in grade school.
Replay later at 10pm @ Balls.
Man for man Adamson seems to be the toughest match up for the Eagles. Mamang mama ang dating ng mga players wlang Totoy. They just have to find a remedy to close out games since they really play touch for 35 mins then the usual collapse in the end game, its more on mental toughness and composure during end games that the Falcons should learn.
But they were tough and composed against the Tamaraws yesterday even when FEU lowered the deficit to 7 points with around 7 minutes left, the same situation they were in against Ateneo.
too many times befoer they have the game in control against Ateneo only to lose it in the last 2mins becoz they just cant score on clutch baskets and just watch their lead overwhelmed by Ateneo's aggressive end game.
they have to learn to play to win and not play not to lose.
if Buenafe is still with Ateneo, why Austria is wearing no. 13?
I watched the first few minutes of the UP-NU game but turned the tv off. Medyo larong buko e. hehe
almost all teams except Ateneo (Slow deliberate PBA style) plays the run and gun type of game kya expect lots of turn overs.
Even if most teams play the run-and-gun type of game, there is still a semblance of order in the plays. Maybe I'm just biased, maybe I just expect more from UP but it seems that every time I get to watch them play, I see botched play after botched play and players not knowing what to do inside the court. Sabi nga e 'pinabili lang ng suka'. But it's fun watching how the other teams are affected by their play!
you guys should watch the NCAA.. halos lahat ng teams dun parang walang plays.. you see one possession after another na isang player lang humahawak ng bola.. coast to coast pero di naman tumatama sa ring yung tira.. yung ibang team naman, 5 straight posessions, tres lang tinitira.. offensive rebound na pwede na i-putback, nilalabas pa para sa tres.. 1st quarter pa lang yan.. ang sakit sa mata panoorin..masakit pala sa mata,di na lang ako manonood ;D

sorry to disagree as hindi naman halos lahat ng games sir, meron lang talagang teams na sobrang nag rerely sa talent and this usually happen sa mga new Teams especially when they're down by 10 or more..
Try to appreciate also the defense, look at how Beda plays and I hate to say this, their offense is so-so this year but the defense is just really good.. (sorry Bedans) coz I think compare to Baste you don't really have that much talent this year on offense unlike 3 years ago.
Try watching well coached teams like Baste (ouch), Mapua, Beda, and of course my Letran Knights, these teams are really watchable and and I believe they can match up well with the big guns of UAAP. :)
Letran vs. Baste on Wednesday 4PM..

buenafe is not in the line up anymore. heard there was a scandal that led to ateneo cutting him off.
I assume, sir, based on the colors of your stars, that you are for Ateneo! I would have liked to add that he suffer the same fate as his namesake but that is too much to wish upon any person. So I'll just leave it to you. You said it well!
He got suspended for the entire 1st round:
http://www.malaya.com.ph/july19/sports4.html
buenafe and de la cruz feud got them both out of the Ateneo line up for good.
Care to elaborate? And if you could cite sources, that would be appreciated. All I heard was he flunked his subjects.
there are no news sources re this, but online forums are buzzing with talks that he (buenafe) was accused with raping art dela cruz's gf...
from what ive personally heard/read may version na yung gf daw ang lumapit kay ryan nung nag away sila ni art... may version naman na nagiinuman sila and may flirting daw between the gf and ryan.. may version din na break na si art and the gf when this happened, and gawa gawa lang to ni art (propaganda) para siraan si ryan..
daming versions no? parang dvd?
all because of a girl.. wow..
OT. I don't know if it's just me, but parang only this year that rookies who were great in Juniors are excelling also in Seniors, karamihan kasi before are busts.. very few ang success transitions like Ritualo, Tenorio..
pinatos ba namn un gf ng teammate d of course they both cant be part of that team anymore.
masisira pa un chemistry ng team if both are still included
ganyan ka seryoso siguro talaga ang basketball program ng ateneo. kahit gano ka pa kagaling, kung may problema sayo personal man or sa academics..aalisin ka nila..pwede pa naman sila mag develop ng ibang players.
Actually the stars indicate that I'm a mod, but yeah I am for Ateneo.
JUSTICE!

It's because of an alleged serious charge vs buenafe, yes. And from what i heard, Ateneo asked him to go so buenafe "voluntarily" left the team. So at least for the record, he was not technically removed from the squad. In return, they were able to convince the girl not to press charges anymore.
ganun? perhaps thats the consolation he got for giving Ateneo a triple crown during his 3 yr tenure.sayang, used to follow this kid nung nasa baste jUniors pa sya together with bringas who played for La Salle but I heard will be playing with Baste again after completing his 1 year residency.. they were unbeatable then..

Buenafe was on the same level as Ritualo during his Beda times..
anyway, from what we all saw last weekend, mukhang Ateneo and Adamson are the teams to beat this year..
and Parks' shooting stroke? simply amazing, parang ang dali.. :)

i still remember how dominant the cubs were when ren-ren, jenkins mesina, mike bravo ang jomalesa were playing together, tapos off the bench si xavier nunag. they were so dominant, never threathened in any game. 1st half pa lng 30+ na ang lamang sa kalaban. ibang klase talaga ang cubs, farm team ng uaap seniors ;D
nagkalat na naman uste...
a won game lost.... >:(
Does anyone know how much good seats will cost to watch the games at Araneta?
Patron and Lower Box are the good seats in Araneta. If you get Upper A, the very first three rows would still be ok.
Patron = Php300 (i think)
Lower Box = Php250(or could be 300 and Patron would be Php350 already).
I still maintain my opinion on Pido. His team is composed of prolific 3pt. shooters and a workhorse in camus but his decisions as a tactician / strategist is still questionable. He may be a good motivator / comedian but as a good coach.... :D He used up all his timeouts with around 3 or 4min left in the game. He still persistently fielded in kevin ferrer when FEU was catching up. The turnovers in the last 3 or 4 possession of UST in the last 3 min to 2nd min could have been prevented with a good play in breaking the press FEU was applying.
He won 2006 against Ateneo in the championship bec. he had good wing players in Jojo Duncil, and Dylan Ababou. Jervy Cruz was a good force in the paint. That was a fluke and will never be repeated again. Kevin ferrer may blossom but still quite raw as can be seen in yesterday's game.
i had the chance to watch camus and with my little undertsnading of basketball. this guy is a very good talent, tall and fast and with a fighting heart.
yung mga player ng USTE naghihirap lumamang kaso pag nag habol na kalaban, yung diskarte ng coach ang susundin kaya ayun sablay.
Yes, camus is very good. I expect Nico Salva and Chris Camus to rough it up tomorrow.
Not sure if anybody can confirm this, but i'll pay more attention during the timeouts and coach pido "orchestrates" a play. Somebody pointed out this in another forum - "O, ____ bigay mo ung bola kay ____ at siya na bahala dumiskarte" what the hell!?!?
^ Final score: UP 76, FEU 63. ;D
i'm sure all coaches give freedom to their main man when its crunch time.
Bigay mu un bola kay MJ sya na bahala db?
Question is, if that player has the heart to put in the BIG SHOTS, he will deliver.
i'm sure all coaches give freedom to their main man when its crunch time.

Hence, the pba style (all heart, too much one on one plays ) fails at international basketball. Pang showtime lng.
And Ateneo pretty much proved they were truly unbeatable in the first round.
Ateneo seems to be cruising its way to the UAAP finals again. With a powerhouse lineup in Slaughter and Ravena, mahirap talunin ang Ateneo.
The NCAA is more interesting with the Stags and San Beda having an identical 7-0 record. Behind Abueva's triple double earlier this afternoon, the Stags beat gutsy Arellano and tied San Beda at the top. Their next games will be on Wednesday against Mapua and JRU respectively. Should they win and keep their clean slates, it will be a colossal battle on August 19 against the two rivaling schools. These two teams met last year in the Finals and SBC won. The Stags is seeking revenge while the Lions is trying to prove that, even without an import, they can beat the Stags! Ayos na ayos to...
Does the UAAP still give an automatic berth in the Finals for the team that sweeps the eliminations? And if so, will it just be a semifinal match-up then between the 2nd and 3rd seeds?
I'm not sure. I think the practice now is for the team to get an outright finals seat (like a bye) and wait.
^ Ah yes. Thanks for the lead. In Season 70, UE swept the eliminations and was automatically seeded in the Finals. Then there were stepladder games to determine the other Finalist (which was eventually DLSU, who bagged the crown that year).
Got this from Wikipedia:
If a team sweeps the elimination round:
Seed #1 advance to the Finals.
Seed #2 advance to the semifinals with the twice to beat advantage.
Teams #3 and #4 face off to meet #2 in the semifinals in a one-game playoff.
In the finals, the #1 seed only has to win twice, while the other opponent has to win thrice.
But anything can still happen in the second round this season. :)
tama ba ito? ???
Mukang tama, based on this 2008 article, when the UAAP changed the rules for sweeping the elims.
http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews/sports/view/20080628-145227/Additional-incentive-for-UAAP-sweep
Parang best-of-three lang ang Finals for the sweeping team, while best-of-five for the other finalist. Virtual champion na 'yung first finalist in this case.
so if no team sweeps the elimination round, the finals is just a best-of-three series but if a team sweeps the elimination round, then the finals, technically, becomes a best-of-five with the team who swept the eliminations having a one game advantage? sounds illogical. ;D
I agree. Might as well give the crown to the team that sweeps the eliminations, in this case. I think the automatic berth in the Finals is enough as an incentive/reward. If the team is really that good, it can demonstrate that during the best-of-three Finals.
O eto na official word from my sources inside UAAP/NCAA : Tama ka Wiggum - the one who sweeps the eliminations gains an automatic berth in the finals. Then a best of 3 finals. No more twice to beat advantage. This is what happened to San Beda last year. It swept the elims and waited for the other teams in a ladder system. Baste and San Beda battled it out in a best of 3 where San Beda won 2-0.
Does this also apply to the UAAP?
mukhang mas maganda talaga yung NCAA versus UAAP, both San Beda and San Sebastian sporting immaculate records yung laban nila parang preview na ng finals
di ako madalas maka nood but gets the chance to see nuyles and abvueva, ang galing pareho
yes Calvin Abueva is a monster on the court. more inches in height could have make him unstoppable even with imports playing for the opposing teams.
it will be WAR when Baste faces San Beda next week.
NO IMPORT for San Beda so this will be a BIG TEST for them and prove that they really are that GOOD even playing All Filipino.
Is the 2nd Round sked of the UAAP available already?
akala ko import si abueva, pinoy din pala ;D
go san beda fight!!! love your own syempre.
Schedule will be released within the day. Will post if it becomes available and i'm not stuck in meetings.
taga pampanga ata si Calvin, he's actually the bigger version of Talk n Text Jason Castor.
or bigger version of Willie Miller.. First time I watched NCAA in Rizal back in '97, Miller dunked on Calpito and Aducul, although Letran lost to Baste that dunk against 2 mammoths was really unforgettable.. Anyway, Baste swept the season that year, totally unbeaten.. No team can match them even UST who at that time was the UAAP champ.
^ plus rommel daep. btw, i still remember yun mga harapan na set shot na 3 points ni tanigue ang pumapatay sa san beda dati.
Beda with Ralph Emerson Rivera and Rency Bajar, with 2 big men ( I forgot their names).. Letran naman with Calaguio, Miller, and Kerby Raymundo.. Players turning pro before were exciting lalo na pag draft na..
OT. Remember yung year ni Boybits Victoria and Rey Evangelista, grabe labanan sa ROY sa PBA nun..
ngayun even the best players from NCAA and UAAP di makaporma because of the Fil-Ams..
^ plus rommel daep. btw, i still remember yun mga harapan na set shot na 3 points ni tanigue ang pumapatay sa san beda dati.Baste even had Jerome Barbosa as the reliever for Adducol or Calpito.
^sa tingin ko yan din yung dahilan kung bakit mas maraming UAAP players ang nasa PBA ngayon..
napapansin ko talaga that most of the players who make it sa PBA in the recent years, galing UAAP.. nung nag-4-peat ang UST, most of their players then established a career sa PBA.. Dennis Espino, Bal David, Rey Evangelista, Edmund Reyes.. yung 5-peat core ng Baste, si Adducul lang and it's a far cry from the career he could have had kung di siya pumasok sa MBA..
kung titingnan mo nga line-ups ng PBA ngayon, you can form the core of the UAAP champion teams in the past decade or so..
sa Ateneo, you have Tenorio, Villanueva, Fonacier, Gonzales, Alvarez, Intal, Kramer, Jai Reyes, Baclao, Al-Hussaini.. sa La Salle, Cortez, Sharma, Wilson, Cardona, Ritualo, Tang, Yeo, Maierhofer, Gaco.. sama mo pa si Allado.. kahit nga UE na di nag-champion in recent years makakabuo ng solid team with James Yap, Artadi, Tubid, Canaleta, Borboran, Espiritu.. may FEU ka pa with Santos, Miranda, Isip, Villanueva, Rizada, Chan..
mas may advantage talaga yung player na sanay na maglaro within a system.. sometimes nga when I watch the NCAA ngayon, nasasayangan ako sa mga players na magagaling individually.. I always wonder if they'd fit sa PBA..
basketball nowadays is too systematic and becoz of scientific approach to the game, no all of the players have the freedom to display their talents thats why i dont think we'd see the likes TONY HARRIS, BILLY RAY BATES, MICHAEL HACKETT, CARLOS BRIGGS shooting the lights out of the arena.
sobrang defensive minded and approach ng mga coaches kya we dont experience much high scoring games anymore. and more to that teams forces a lot of turn overs kya mostly masakit sa mata un mga games.
i can compare it to the COW raised in nature by letting it have the freedom to eat grass and anything out there in the field to a COW scientifically fed with corn and vitamins quarantined inside barn.
the officiating seems to be getting worse as the tournament goes on in both the UAAP and NCAA.. and that annoying lane violation after a free throw needs to be scrapped.. it's being called at almost every shot.. minsan sa endgame pa in a close game.. parang referee na nag-dedecide kung sino mananalo..
Yan na, napasukan na ng negosyo

San Beda (8-0) vs San Sebastian (8-0) will be gunning for the lead tomorrow.
4pm arena SJ?
hindi na ba uso bugbugan ng mga taga-beda at baste? ::) ;D
go sbc fight!

Yes 4pm. Hope you got tickets? Nagkaubusan na eh.
Yun bugbugan at rambulan wala na, lumipas na. Gone are the hooliganism days.
"From San Beda to the battlefield, march the sons of SBC. Wearing banners of the Red and White, waving for our victory...."
F-I-G-H-T!!!

Aha sir ojofool, u'r messing with my letran knights.. Just kidding.. Kung pwede lang sana matalo sila pareho tomrow.. Hassle ang layo ng san juan.. Sana ibalik sa Rizal..
Lucky enough to secure ringside tickets for the "WAR" later ;D
w/o Sudan, Baste players are very confident attacking the basket.
Great game by San Beda, they could have escaped defeat with a 3pt shot.
Great win by FEU yesterday against ADU.
Great game by Aldrich Ramos. He really played aggressively attacking the basket.
That Nuyles guy can play (and he plays hard) kaya lang he keeps on taking long shots.. with his talent and his leaping ability Adamson could be a force this year, he just have to play smarter..
and Baste it is! dinaan lang sa sipag ng Stags.. those offensive rebounds won it for them.. and I think masyadong naging predictable yung San Beda in their last few plays.. palagi sila dun sa back picks kay Lanete..
with Sudan, it could have been a different ball game but its now up to San Beda to prove they can will it all w/o an import.
they may lost the battle but not the WAR there's time to regroup and prepare for the next battle against the STAGS.
Sudan hinted that he might be able to play in the second round ;D But if you ask me, I'd really want San Beda to win with an All Pinoy cast ;D Para wala ng masabi ;D
although i am a UAAP fan, i could not resist the urge to watch that game. and it was a really good game. during the first half, it looked like SSC was going to nail it easily. but beda rallied in the second half and even took the lead. it was a see-saw battle from there. abueva was definitely a beast in that game. but it was a team effort, for me. except that abueva and pascual imposed their will the most in the game.
whats happening to DLSU? mukhang they wont make it to the Final Four back to back.
I'm Green...win or lose...but it seems the boys lost their HEART when they lost to UE the other week...the boys need a lot of maturity...especially that it is supposed to be payback time this Sunday...
napansin ko wlang GO TO GUY ang DLSU. Marata is a big disappointment. Their guards arent as creative as the ones before. They seem to be loaded with Tall Players but since there backcourt arent that talented, their offense suffers.

It's starting to get obvious that Dindo is not Franz.
Topex is indeed lucky to have a great crew, when he was made SSC head-coach. He's still a newbie & it showed during the recent PBA DLeague.
He will get better really fast as he's also an assistant at ALASKA - even without Cone.
I don't think Topex could do better than what Pido has done so far.. Topex is looking like a great coach because he has a superior team.. I'm not saying he's not good but it's easier to coach a team if you have players that can do what you tell them to and do them right..
if you put Topex at UST, they'd be where NU is at right now, in my opinion.. I think Dindo would fare better than Topex if he had the UST lineup.. not too long ago, Dindo led UE to a 14-0 sweep with no legitimate superstar in the lineup.. he did lose to brother Franz in the finals but still, 14-0 is not an easy thing to do..
^ Dindo is a better coach right now than Topex ....... though like I said, expect Topex to accelerate much faster since he's exposed to the PBA more - with ALASKA no less.
By the way, that UE team that went 14-0 had more than a few very decent players ..... not superstars, but worthy enough to crack PBA rosters e.g. Borboran, Thiele, Espiritu, Arellano, Acuna, Lingganay & Paul Lee (still very raw then).
Jervy Cruz was never going to replicate his UAAP success into the pros.
He's undersized & a tad on the slow-side ....... though his post smarts, decent rebounding & his decent mid-range jumpers have brought him some minutes in Welcoat's PBA team (ROS).
now i remember, elmer espiritu si the slam dunk champion, eto yung mahaba ang reach, nakikita ko sya maglaro pero di babad, si thiele din
eto yata yung nag champion ang UST pero 14-0 and UE
Those were the days indeed ...... of my 5 years in Engg, I got to see 4 UST championships live (4-peat). ;D
The lone year which I didnt see a championship (well aside from my Pay High years) was when UST lost a heart-breaker to FEU ....... I was there in the ADMU gym during that game against FEU. IIRC it was Abbarientos' last year & even then, he was spectacular.
As I've posted before, UST has actually stayed the course as far as recruitment goes ...... they still get most of their players from Pampanga & nearby areas ..... Aric Del Rosario country.
It's just the other elite programs went a few notches higher with their recruitments e.g. DLSU Filams, ADMU Filams, ADMU strategic pirating (e.g. Baclao, Slaughter, etc), DLSU cornering the recent RP Youth Team, etc
^ Fully agree with post ...... DLSU doesnt have that creative & clutch backcourt, unlike years back.
They (and NU) still have an outside chance though of stealing the 4th spot from UST.
masyadong kulang sa tao yung FEU to match-up well with Ateneo.. their guards are good but their frontline is depleted.. kayang-kaya rin pigilin ng guards ng Ateneo sina Garcia, Tolomia at Romeo.. if those 3 can't score, hirap ang FEU maghanap ng puntos.. their big men are more comfortable playing the perimeter than banging bodies inside.. Ramos and Escoto have decent jumpers but if they don't fall, mahihirapan sila sa loob against Slaughter, Chua, Salva and Sumalinog..
Adamson still has the biggest chance of beating Ateneo.. man for man, kaya nila tapatan yung Ateneo.. Lester Alvarez yung back-up nila and he really is better than Canada.. I think Leo Austria prefers Alvarez to lead the 2nd unit para may stability.. he already has Cabrera hoisting up shots at will sa 2nd unit niya.. he doesn't need another one..
Kapos din sa BIG men walng banger in the mold of a Cervantes. Their small forward position is vacant with JR Cawalig very poor performances.
DLSU was spoiled by 9 years (I think) of Ritualo and Casio. Great shooters na mapagkakatiwalaan in the clutch. 3 point shooters at that so kung naghahabol ka malaking bagay din. Marata was supposed to be the replacement but sadly he's not even close.
what a performance by UST in the 2nd half.. they limited Adamson to 16pts the entire 2nd half after scoring 42 in the 1st.. they came back from being down by as much as 17pts sa 2nd quarter..
Teng may be overrated but one thing he never fails to give is energy.. parang walang kapaguran yung tao.. sugod lang ng sugod.. 1 point lang sa 1st half but he scored 12pts in the 3rd alone para makahabol yung UST.. the way UST is playing this season, mukhang safe pa ng isang taon si Pido.. ;D
Nice ...... one more win (against FEU or NU) will lock-up a Final Four slot for UST.
I cant recall the last time that UST made a big comeback against a highly-seeded opponent.
Bal David, Henry Ong & Dale Singson would have been proud.
^ tapos repeat ng 2006 finals against Ateneo? ;D ;D ;D

Congratulations UST!
Panalo na Supes? Does that a mean a final four berth?
Sorry I meant UST kasi already assured of Final Four
Congrats to UST, big win against FEU.
They lost only once in the second round of Season 74 and showed everyone the versatility of their roster.
If Adamson loses this weekend, quotient system na for ranks 2 to 4.
hindi sa ayaw ko sa ADMU, pero sana matalo sila ng Adamson, para mas maganda competition..panget pag waiting na agad. tapos kelangan talunin sila thrice ng kalaban? tama ba?
Didn't catch the game earlier, but Ateneo's loss made the post-season more interesting. What happens if UST and FEU end up tied after the final elimination games tomorrow? Will they have another game to determine who should be seeded third? Or will they just apply the quotient system?
Ateneo's myth of invincibility has been shattered.
By the way, ADU beat ADMU the same way they beat UST during their 1st round encounter ..... pesky D and shooting lights-out. Should ADU do that a few more games, then their chip drought will likely come to an end.
so ADU finally got the monkey off their backs by beating Ateeno convincingly last night.
Also good to hear UST is already in the Final 4 but what are the chances they finish at 2 spot?
What a shot by Parks to end the game! :o
wow, San Beda just lost to JRU 65-76.. :o and that's after Baste escaped with a 77-76 win over Perpetual..
oo nga eh.. 12nn for a final 4 game?! by the way, lead's down to 5, 54-49, with 7mins to go..
65-60 Ateneo, 2:12 4th..
Delayed telecasts suck. :(
Any updates for the FEU-ADU match?

Heard some news that Camus just played his final season with the Tigers (?) ....... if this is true, then UST's campaign next year could take a hit.
Camus is the glue-guy for the team with his overall hustle & improved scoring (much like Evangelista & Yee years back).
Hope the Jeron Teng news come true and he goes Black & Gold next season.
Ferrer is indeed more offensively-gifted than Camus and will likely take his spot & minutes by next season (should Camus be gone next season).
However, Camus rebounds, defends & hustles like it's going out of style ..... brings intangibles that dont show up on stat sheets ..... makes some timely hits also. Hope he has a year or two left for the UAAP.
Game 1 of the UAAP Finals will be at 3pm while the Gilas semis clash (do or die) against Jordan is at 3:30pm.
Channel surfing na to.
UAAP Finals na tomorrow.
i hope FEU can steal game 1 so we can see how the prized rookies of Ateneo handle the pressure now that Ryan Buenafe isnt with the team.

ateneo wins game 1!
Game 1 to Ateneo.
Sad to watch Gilas not playing up to par against Jordan earlier.
Better Luck next time Team Pilipinas.
Stags finally lose, 81-82 to Letran in OT.. nakakaaliw yung game.. halatang rusty yung Stags pero ayaw talaga bumitaw.. hero to goat si Pascual.. after forcing overtime, iniwan niyang libreng libre si Alas para sa tres.. ayun pumasok at panalo Letran..
simula na rebuilding process ng La Salle.. Dindo Pumaren and his coaching staff have resigned..
http://sports.inquirer.net/16327/dindo-pumaren-resigns-as-la-salle-mentor
badtrip kasi Adamson nagpatalo sa FEU. sila lang may kayang tumalo sa Ateneo eh. FEU walang ka-play-play kanina.
First it was Jong Uichico who was rumored to coach La Salle next year. Now, heard from the grapevine that it's gonna be Gee Abanilla and Tanquincen as his assistant coach.
Jeron Teng is, supposedly, a 100% lock for UST.
I stand corrected. The kid seems to want to go to Ateneo.
"Kiko to Iggy" means Francis Xavier (his current school) to Ignatius of Loyola (Ateneo).
baka mawalan na ng gana ang mga UAAP supporters if Ateneo will always have the best players in the country. Ravena and Slaughter won their first championship on their first year, which means they still have 4 more years to play, these 2 alone are unstoppable then another very good player coming, wow, 8 straight championship is not impossible..
although it's not their fault if players want to play for them but at least dapat my rules on recruiting HS players.. :)
I do believe that there are still a lot of good prospects, problema di lang sila nadidiscover coz they're in the province and some not so famous school. If I were to scout prospects I'll start in the visayas and mindanao area. Ang daming may potentials doon given the proper training and education. Masyado kasi nakafocus sa Manila at big universities ang mga teams.
Actually, aside from the Manila-based schools which usually produce the best junior prospects (usually from SBC, SSC, ADMU, UST, Letran, Mapua, etc) ..... a good majority of those who went on to have great senior & pro careers came from provincial programs.
Right off the bat ..... from the north came guys like Ildefonso, Aquino, Espino, Santos, Meneses, Miller, Tugade, David & many more particularly from Pampanga, Pangasinan, etc. ..... south has guys like Yap, Limpot, Locsin, Duremdes, Lastimosa, etc.
FEU is a good example of sound provincial-based recruitment ..... ADMU recognizes as well, this since they strategically recruited south-based bigs like Slaughter & Baclao - both instrumental in their recent 'chips.
The UAAP season is done but we still have the NCAA to ponder about.
If Letran can beat San Beda this friday, then they'll gain the twice to beat advantage.
I still want San Beda to prove to me that they can win it all via ALL FILIPINO and not with a Big Black African Import.
Yes CJLC vs SSC.
i like that kid Kevin Alas ang kapal ng mukha isnt afraid to take the big shots when the game is on the line.
sa SSC naman that Pascual is just shining this season.
I hope my Letran Knights will not have the same fate as Adamson.. beating the the top team in elims then losing in the final 4.. In fairness to Kevin Alas, he still ask his coach dad through eye to eye contact before taking thoses big shots.. and I think sya lang talaga ang pwede..
Ot.. La Salle was so closed on getting him 3 years ago, but his Dad asked him to stick na lang with Letran.
Actually, if Letran wins this Friday and San Beda wins against Baste, playoff sila for the 2nd spot.. Letran already has 3 losses kasi while San Beda only has two.. if Letran plays the same way they played against Baste, delikado ang San Beda and going to the final four, malaking bagay yan for Letran.. I actually see a Letran-San Sebastian finals.. both Letran and San Sebastian have been consistent all season long.. San Beda has been on and off..
According to this article Buenafe might be back next UAAP season and Slaughter hasn't committed yet. Maybe he's going to another league, probably the NCAA in US? Still they will be a team to be reckoned with.
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/10/09/11/ateneos-salva-promises-5th-straight-title
i feel Ateneo will be able to convince Greg Slaughter to play his final year and go for the rare 5peat.
As for Ryan, he's gonna be a huge lift he's back for next season now that Kirk Long wont be around anymore.
SSC vs SBC is gonna be war tomorrow.
SBC will do its best to win and force SSC to go up against Letran in the final four, the only team that beat SSC. Despite losing to JRU in the elims, SBC feels that JRU is the lighter opponent. (Mahirap kalaban si Louie Alas sa semis ). SSC on the other hand will also do everything to remain on top and have a morale boosting win going into the final four. Hell, it's war indeed!
although I know Letran has a slim chance on beating either Beda or Baste, I would prefer the latter as we already beat them and Beda's D is just too much and very physical.. :)
looks like Norman Black's going back to the PBA after next season.. and with this development, I think Ateneo will really try to convince Slaughter to play one more year to get that 5-peat..
http://sports.inquirer.net/20045/norman-black-to-talk-'n-text-chot-reyes-to-smart-gilas-five
Gilas 2 needs more height, a strong athletic powerforward of at least 6'9 that can run the breaks should help in their succeeding campaigns.
Greg will either go pro or stay with Ateneo. He won't be considering the US NCAA (or be even recruited by NCAA schools) since he already played 4 years of college ball in the Philippines.
As for Ryan, he was at the bonfire. I hope he gets to play next year. However, if he doesn't it's fine with me as long as he gets to finish his studies in admu.
Anybody know why he was not scouted earlier? He played ball in Cebu right before this season right?
i have no knowledge of this Junmar Fajardo. How big is he? Is he a mobile big man that's athletic and also have the skills to fit a run and gun team?
Convincing win by SBC too bad it isnt over yet. magpapatayan pa ule sila ng SSC for the top spot come Fri.
Just learned that SBC beat SSC to clinch the top spot.
It seems SBC is peaking at the right time, they are ROCK SOLID in their last 3 games so i'm begining to believe they really are worthy to win this season's championship.
Looks like UPSET in the making as Letran beat SSC to force a rubber natch.
SBC looks good and now await their Finals opponent.
Go San Beda fight!
I really think SBC has what it takes to win this year.
And if Abatayo goes to Mendiola (from Taytay) and Sudan goes back healthy, it could be another great season in 2012. :D
DLSU has the potential to be a great half-court defensive team. They have size and the speed to do it, especially if the UAAP sticks to the farther 3 point line.
the Stags need production from their guards.. dito na talaga nila mararamdaman yung pagkawala ni Semira.. Del Rio has been non-existent all season.. he plays a lot of minutes but there's little production from him.. on a slump pa naman si Pascual.. kung walang tutulong sa Big 3 ng Baste, this is going to be another San Beda sweep..
SBC got game 1
first time i watched abvueva that long, mukhang kailnagan nyang mag adjust sa diskarte nya, he was the mvp but all i see in him kanina is yung sheer strength and galing, siguro gigil lang talag pero ang sama ng mga diskarte nya kanina, pilit na pilit yung mga tira nya kaya puro sapal ang inaabot
on another note, may anak na din pala si paras na nag lalaro, ang tnagkad at mukhang lalabas din na magaling eh.
Marcelo getting Finals MVP was something I didn't expect.
Kudos to the Lions!
Studio23 din ba? I'd like to watch this.

that's the Baste coach on the ground..
this is going to make the Final 4 match on Monday even more interesting.. the Baste men's volleyball team and the Baste women's team coach called Beda's Ola Adeogun unggoy daw kaya nagkagulo.. Gorayeb, the Baste coach, threw the first punch daw tapos sinugod na siya.. one of Baste's lady players was also hit in the face.. si Crisostomo..

O eto buong kwento direct mismo from a spectator: Actually nagsimula sa labas ng gym. May game ang Volleyball team ng Baste. Lumabas si Ola and some women players started teasing him, Unggoy Unggoy thinking na di nakakaintindi ng tagalog. Instead of confronting the girls, Ola went to Coach Frankie Lim. Nagsumbong. Natural, Coach Frankie went to the girls at pinagsabihan. Huwag naman daw bastos. And Frankie came on strong. Etong mga babae naman nagsumbong sa coach nila. Si Coach, dahil nga sobrang tapang (grabe sa tapang talaga), pinuntahan si Frankie Lim without even knowing the whole story, and said something like "idiot Ka pala eh". Naturalmente, nagsiklab si Frankie. Hinabol si Coach na tumakbo, of all places, sa loob ng gym pa ng San Beda where the Basketball team was still practicing! Ayun he got one solid punch from Frankie Lim, fell to the floor and got several pa from some players. Swerte nya inawat ng mga girls nya. Unang una, these Baste volleyball players shouldn't go around hurling racial slurs to people. That's bastos kahit saan mo tignan. Pangalawa, etong Coach naman should have cleared first with Frankie Lim what happened before asking for a fight. Frankie did the right thing na pagalitan yun mga volleyball players. Also, the Baste Coach asked for it. He got what he deserved ;D
maganda talaga yung footwork ni Fajardo.. tumatalon pa nga.. playing for Bobby Parks and Alex English will improve his game a lot.. he'll be a force when he plays for Ginebra/Petron in the PBA next season.. ;D

^ Exactly ..... Abueva has to be one of the most athletic forwards seen in the past decade. Incredible hops.
But too much swagger for this guy, right now ..... swagger could be a good thing in the pros actually - just needs a good combination of (alpha) veteran co-players & the right coaching.
i hope he turns out to be coachable sir newwave otherwise di sya magtatagal baka puro trade ang abutin becuase of attitude problem.
too much errors again as usual. masyadong gigil na gigil kaya naagawan pag drive sa basket.
Defection

I think most basketball heads here in the Philippines were shocked about the Semerad twins’ sudden transfer to Ateneo. Include me among those people. I never foresaw this one. Talk about being blindsided hard. In any case, this was worse than what LeBron James did to Cleveland.
FULL STORY (http://www.philstar.com/unblogged/blog-entry.aspx?articleid=757645)
why is this being allowed? nasa school level pa lang eh commercialized na ang mag diskarte ng player
wala bang batas ang liga against things like this?
San Sebastian is the first NCAA school to win the Philippine Collegiate Champions League.
They beat Ateneo 73-67.
Calvin Abueva carried the Stags with a beastly 20 points, 17 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. The most telling stats were actually his 3 assists, with the last 2 swinging the win to Baste.
Xavier's Teng will play for La Salle
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/01/16/12/xaviers-teng-will-play-la-salle
Is this the kid some of you mentioned last year? Panapat kay Kiefer Ravena?
La Salle should work for great forwards and the best point guard. Again it would take years to rebuild so I don't see any crown for them.
I was hoping he would play with big brother Jeric for the Gold & White.
Good for DLSU getting the younger Teng - they'll likely make the Final Four again ..... Franz Pumaren's former RP Youth "recruits" are not getting it done e.g. Marata, etc
No coincidence that the season that Danding "Pacman" Cojuangco retakes the lead godfather role for DLSU ..... they also get the best prospect available.

Not necessarily, but they are good on paper. They have no issues filling out any position and they should be competitive next year.

Teng looks like the lead in a shallow batch of rookies.
No word yet on Buenafe - but if he does suit up for ADMU, it will be good times once more down Katipunan.
Arvie Bringas ..... cant recall when he left DLSU, but he has to serve 2-yrs residency with FEU - dont know when he becomes eligible.
Good for FEU if ever Bringas gets to play this season - he's tough just like his brother. He'll be a decent replacement for Noundou.
and his style of play didnt match the structured game of dlsu.
hopefully he blossoms with feu.

from what i heard, no big-name freshie. they'll be elevating some players from their "team b," including ex-la salle player nico elorde who was serving residency last year.
SBC still needs to get university certification before they enter the UAAP, I think.
NCAA set to bar foreign players
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/03/26/12/ncaa-set-bar-foreign-players
Now this is a welcome development although it is still on the planning stages. I hope UAAP follows after.
I don't know why the NCAA became xenophobic all of a sudden. San Beda just proved that they can win without their import.
I believe we should still allow foreign players to play to increase the level of competition in the college ranks. This would translate to us having a stronger youth base for our national team.
What they should ban are players over 23 years old and handlers/managers.
Sana edit mo na lang title mo sir to read 2012 since you are the TS naman... ;)
O ayan, 2012 na!! Game!!
Sa Arena MOA na nga ba ang UAAP?
Since NU will be the host the Arena will be used for the UAAP opening and around 60%(?) of the time for the basketball games. The rest will be split up between Araneta and Philsports or BEG (for the small crowd drawing games).
Good. This'll be interesting. And I'm excited to see how NU will fare this season.
As for my Red Lions, they will be playing with only 6 players in the opener >:(

How are the bedans taking the news of the semerad twins going back to the den?
Malakas talaga Bulldogs, Brader Tirso! Iba kasi talaga pag properly funded...maganda na ang recruitment program ng NU ngayon...during my dad's time when he was King Bulldog, minsan abonado pa daw sila na sapatos and uniform hehe!
The NBA is over so time to shift my attention to the UAAP.
SM owned NU Bulldogs making lots of noise that they are serious contenders this season.
I still doubt if they can beat ATENEO specially with the return of Ryan Buenafe.
My forecast for the final 4 : ATENEO, LA SALLE, UST and NU.
slaughter still playing? thats tough for NU but if NU at least gets to the final, ang laking accompishment, kelan ba last na nag finals NU nung time pa yata ni Ildefonso
malakas pa din UST? i have been disspointed with my alma maters team for quite sometime, walang player na malakas
Slaughter still with Ateneo so First 5 will include Buenafe, Salva, Ravena plus their point guard.
Palaban naman lagi ang UST so makakasilat din yan.
I still doubt NU will bag the crown this year and deny Black a 5 peat.
I'm putting Adamson over UST, as long as Nuyles is playing, they're still a top four team.. DLSU I think has the best backcourt in Revilla and Teng..
In NCAA, watch out for Mark Cruz.. Go Knights..

ang UST wala na yata talagang pag asang gumaling :(

Parks will have his 2nd MVP this year, btw is he half Pinoy? baka pwede sa RP team..
Let's not forget about FEU, dmi rin surprises yan and they do recruit good native players. They may even enter the Final via back door if UST, DLSU and NU get bad breaks during the course of the tournament.
The question for FEU still remains, however: “Who will distribute the ball for all these guys?”
----------
The key to FEU this coming season is how Romeo and Garcia mix together as Romeo is a ball hog and so is Garcia (but more effective).
FEU can still be in the final four and make UST and NU work for it as well. They have not fared that well in the pre-season tournaments losing to all the projected final four teams if i remember correctly.
Isn't Garcia a former MVP? And during crucial stretches of their ball games, isn't he FEU's go-to-guy? Garcia is a better point guard than Romeo, who'd rather shoot than pass the ball. IMO the problem with FEU is consistency. They know how to play to their strength, but are not consistent enough. If Escoto beefs up without losing his agility and quickness, he'd be hard to stop as he can play inside and outside
I'm not excited over the NCAA, not lots of competitive and exciting teams to watch, too many games but San Beda will still prevail in the end probably against the Letran Knights in the finals.
>:( hehe.. I like my knight's chances this year..
I would go with the UAAP team. Ola can't stop Slaughter, and no one can stop Parks.

Perpetual Help just pulled an upset and beat Letran, 68-66. >:(

UAAP na!
Great game by NU against UE.
Ateneo has a tricky match against the tigers later. From a purely offensive standpoint, UST can match up, particularly if their threes start falling and Abdul can get position for rebpunds.
tinalo daw ng UST and Ateneo kanina by one point?
Yeah. 71-70. Down by as much as 19points. UST rallied 30-11 in the third quarter. Never say die till the end. Oh well. back to the drawing board for the blue and white. Never expected Ateneo to go 13-1 this season. more like 10-4 for them this season. A little shaky at the point.
Everybody in the third quarter was being complacent and ball movement stagnated with Juami who opted to jack up shots and was looking for more assists than move the ball around. turnovers killed ateneo and also Aljon Mariano, Teng, etc.
does it mean there is something to look forward to for UST? Im a Thomasian but has been frustrated many years already because of the kind of tem UST gets to build after the last championship.
is the younger Teng a big loss for UST? I was expecting he will play for the Tigers but ended up with LSL

Ateneo routs NU.
If Ateneo plays the whole season the way they played against NU, then the 5-peat may be a foregone conclusion.
Just watched the 2nd-half of a great match between UST & DLSU ...... UST winning via 2OT's.
Some quick thoughts:
1.) Where did this kid Mariano come from? ..... if this kid wasn't injured last year - good chance that UST would have entered the Finals ..... Mariano and Camus would have been fun to watch.
His offensive moves are way refined ..... kinda reminds me of a taller-version of Kiko Adriano from years ago.
2.) DLSU's Jeron Teng is clearly the better player than kuya ..... more versatile on the handle and shot-making.
Even this early, it's clear that he'll be having a great UAAP career .... he replicates what Joseph Yeo gave years ago.
3.) When he first arrived from the juniors, there was considerable buzz on DLSU's Joshua Webb ..... coming from a family with ties to hoops ..... turns out it was all hype, the guy is a dud.
3.) He is the only player in DLSZ history to have his jersey retired. He is the LEGEND. =))
1.) Mariano came from SBC i think. i might be wrong. but what i do know was that he tried out for ateneo and dlsu for college. wasn't picked up. went to the US to train. got back and was picked up by UST.is maeihoffer from la sallezobel? i remmber webb and buenafe, mvp in juniors and both were expected to lead their respective teams.. Buenafe did more.. on his weight, webb not so much.. But may pag asa pa namn, especially webb kelangan lng ng break, playing time and dedication..
2.) agree but let's see how it turns out. He likes to take it strong to the basket while his brother likes to operate on the outside.
3.) He is the only player in DLSZ history to have his jersey retired. He is the LEGEND. =))
WTF ....... is this true? :D
Honestly, where would DLSU seniors hoops be without the vaunted NCAA Jrs. programs (SBC, MAPUA, SSC, etc) and of course that steady stream of Filams (via a US West-coast based sports agent) throughout the years.
Other than Maierhoffer, I can't recall any legit PBA talent that came from their HS's ..... nope, Dino Aldeguer doesn't count.

Larry Fonacier. from AHS.
Enrico Villanueva? also from AHS
I think newwaveboy was referring to La Salle's high school. :)
woops. haha! didn't see that.

Maeirhoffer is not from Zobel, he is from Palawan
He is from Sabang, Puerto Galera.
UST's wins have been close ones ...... can't keep winning like that - ADMU & FEU will surely turn it up a notch after after the 1st round ..... NU & DLSU just needs to rack up some easy wins over the tail-enders and they'll hit their stride as well.
But the experience would surely benefit them come final four time. Winning close games against the favorites would also raise their confidence level up.i doubted ust's chances before, but knowing how to close games with a little swerte, they're a dangerous team come final four..
I know Maierhofer was from Puerto Galera ...... could have sworn, read somewhere that he played for LSGH or LSZ before joining the seniors.
A late bloomer, Maierhofer discovered his wares for basketball only in third year high school back in Puerto Galera Academy, though he has always had the height since he was young. He used to play volleyball before realizing that he could make good use of his height better in basketball.
i doubted ust's chances before, but knowing how to close games with a little swerte, they're a dangerous team come final four..
Tuloy ba yung UAAP games today or was it cancelled?
You can never count UST out of the Final 4. Laban tlga yan and it reflects on Jarencio's style parang si Jawo and his galant hardcourt warriors.
Make no mistake about it, judging from recent results, UST is not just a dark horse, they are definitely contenders for the Championship this year.my bad, i just don't trust players like Teng.. Jrencio is doing great job, epecially on their center, big improvement, same with NU's bigman..
Ateneo defeated FEU after playing catch-up the first three quarters and some minutes in the fourth.
May replays ba ang uaap? Other than on BTV which I don't have.
Napanood ko rin. Sobrang frustrated feu. Great adjustments by coach norman.
Really great adjustment by Black and the coaching staff both on offense and defense but specially on defense. FEU had an easy time penetrating during the first three quarters of the game but had to be content taking outside shots during the latter part of the fourth quarter. RR Garcia had a hard time receiving the ball and then could not find anyone to receive his passes.
Wala rin, eh. Hehe. Sa Studio 23 ba? Last night they replayed UE vs Adamson (if I'm not mistaken). Kailan kaya yung yesterday's game?
parang may game of the week lang sila feature na replay pag weekends yata. pro yung games the same day ang replay wala yata.
meron, actually, same day replay sa Balls.. 8pm-12mn..
May replays ba ang uaap? Other than on BTV which I don't have.
tight game between ust and adu! 7 straight points by ust lamag sila ng isa with less than a minute to play.
ust wins another close come-from-behind game!
dati kasi natatambakan nila kalaban tpos laging nahahabol at natatalo. ngayun binaligtad nila hehehe.
at number 1 seed yata sila by end of the first round.
just read that Topex Robinson has resigned as coach of San Sebastian.. pretty surprising.. they've been pretty good this season.. overconfident lang against sub-par teams..baka babalik na si ato agustin
Effin great night of hoops ...... my remote control was jumping between the UST-NU and SMART GILAS-USA game.congrats to smart gilas, great game, full heart.. galing ni tenorio.. sa uaap, if you're not a ust fan, you hate 2 players, mariano for being so good and ferrer for playing great d..
Both epic come-from-behind wins ...... both down the wire.
Like I said, UST can't keep playing this way ..... can't just lay-down in the 1st half, then scramble in the 2nd half. The games will only get tougher for those with Final 4 hopes.
congrats to smart gilas, great game, full heart.. galing ni tenorio.. sa uaap, if you're not a ust fan, you hate 2 players, mariano for being so good and ferrer for playing great d..
The referees allowed Ferrer to get away with a lot of things. But that's part of the the game. Parks wasn't able to adjust his game. Altamirano should have been more vehement in complaining to the referees. The only instance he was on the referees was when one of his players got bloodied by an elbow from Abdul.
Bulok ung mga refs. Ferrer was getting away with a lot of things. One of the dirtiest players i've seen. Taunting which was strictly enforced in the past season was forgotten. A lot of elbows by ferrer on BRP wasn't seen. Fortuna taunting BRP during a crucial free throw was not even called.
During the Ateneo UP game, no unsportsmanlike foul was called on padilla. It was clearly shown he wasn't going for the ball. Coach Dandan was stepping onto the court a lot of times and in one instance he was near the shaded lane already.

Bringas was thrown out from today's ADMU-FEU game for doing this:

Medyo madami 'yun ah.
Bringas was thrown out from today's ADMU-FEU game for doing this:
Wow ..... that's old-school right there.
Many old timers like Big Boy Reynoso, Onchie Dela Cruz, etc would have been proud of Bringas. ;D
Seriously, the Bringas brothers are known bruisers/hot-heads on the court ..... I kinda expect altercations whenever FEU plays ADMU - just not the spitting kind.
Slaughter decided to push back during a deadball situation by bumping Bringas, who wasnt expecting it. Bringas went down but couldnt wait for play to resume to get even. Perhaps he should learn a little finesse in playing dirty. Carlos Briggs, a former Ginebra import, when asked who he thought was a dirty player, cited Ramon Fernandez. Briggs said Fernandez was never caught by the refs since he was not obvious in hitting others. Jaworski, on the other hand, was the opposite. ;D
two buzzer-beater games.
UE beats UP on a last second triple.
FEU beats NU on a last .3 of a second lay-up by Garcia.
hindi daw dapat counted yung lay-up ni RR Garcia, nag-file ng protest ang N.U
One thing about UST's Mariano ...... the kid has exceptional footwork - his pivots, drop-steps, body & ball fakes are some of the most mature in all of local college hoops.
Like I said, if Mariano wasn't injured last season ...... UST might've entered the Finals or at the very least, give a genuine scare to ADMU.
A Camus & Mariano tandem would have been fun to watch ..... sayang.
kelan kaya may replay nito?hindi ko kasi napanuod e..
Yup, heard about NU's protest ...... understandable, since Garcia's shot was extremely close - probably the closest buzzer-beater in a long while.
However, unless the UAAP gets a higher-def / better replay ...... I dont think they'll overturn the result.
today daw ang deliberation ng protest by NU. meron na ba sa inyo may updates?
UE just upset Ateneo, 79-77.. Javier once again with the game winner just like vs UP..
Saw the replay of this and it was really, really tight. To have received the ball the entire length of the court, dribbled once and took two steps from where he took off....and to have released the ball, was quite a stretch, and this all happened within two seconds. Now if only this could be zoomed..... you guys be the judge ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI130jrDC6Y
denied.. the win was upheld..
http://sports.inquirer.net/60832/uaap-commissioner-denies-nus-protest-against-feu-win
so NU elevated the case to the UAAP Board and the Board has overturned the commissioner's decision and has ordered a replay of the game on Set. 23.. according to Inquirer..
^for ties in the 2nd and 4th spots involving 2 teams, may playoff.. for 1st and 3rd, head-to-head match up yung basehan.. point difference yung quotient system sa UAAP..
The camera didn't show the play Pido was drawing up but it was obvious it wasn't followed.
And step-back threes are generally not his specialty.
UST secures at least a playoff for the 2nd twice-to-beat advantage.. a win by La Salle later assures them of at least a playoff for the 4th spot.. mukhang magiging mainit yung FEU-NU replay sa Sunday.. a lot at stake for both teams..
this is interesting.. MVP cuts ties with Ateneo (http://www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/mvp-cuts-ties-with-ateneo-leaves-questions-for-sports-program)..
what a game! NU won, 84-81.. Parks was clutch! UST gets the 2nd twice to beat.. they meet NU sa final 4.. DLSU-FEU on Wednesday for last spot.. possible Ateneo-La Salle sa final 4..
Like I said, this UAAP season has been a standout, in terms of close games, wild finishes & great comebacks.I agree, I like the guard from FEU I forgot his name, cogoy Yata.. not as talented as Kiefer but he is dangerous in open court, I like him more than Romeo..
Parks was (finally) clutch ..... though, I would have given the best player of the game to Mbe.
That was probably the best game I've seen Mbe play ..... the guy clearly didn't want his last UAAP game to be another heart-breaker.
========================================================================
The Final Four series will be a blast ..... UST-NU games this season, have been epic.
An ADMU-DLSU matchup will always be fun ..... if it's ADMU-FEU, I have a feeling that the match-up will be more competitive this time (bring in the Bringas brothers, Magtulis & the Salvas). >:D
I agree, I like the guard from FEU I forgot his name, cogoy Yata.. not as talented as Kiefer but he is dangerous in open court, I like him more than Romeo..
FEU's guards are Garcia, Romeo and Tolomia. All are very dangerous in open court. Perhaps you are referring to Pogoy, sounds like Cogoy ;D, who also knows how to work his way to the basket.
This is the best chance that UST has to re-enter the Finals & possibly take the championship .... they have a narrow championship window, with many key players on their last year of eligibility.[/b]
They've handled NU before, albeit via very close games.
Should ADMU enter the Finals against UST ..... it just might match the intensity of their 2006 Finals match-up ..... IMO that was one of the best UAAP Finals series ever.
woot! 2nd place and twice to beat ang UST! Tigers wag nyo sayangin yan! Go USTe! ;D
^ That 2006 Finals series between UST & ADMU was one for the books ..... all down-the-wire games, including Game 3 which went into OT.
That series showed, once again, that nerves of steel are sometimes more useful than talent - when it came to big games in the UAAP ...... Jojo Duncil just took over that series, while JC Intal wilted under pressure.
By the way, that Game 1 last-second second by Kramer was a result of great "fake-play" from Norman Black ..... if anything, it was a master coach (Black) taking a rookie coach (Jarencio) to school on that instance.
wala talaga masyado suporta si Parks.. After Mbe, wala na.
any live stream links?
agree.
with the loss, would it have any effect on the back-to-back MVP bid of rayray? will karim abdul be able to snatch it?
ADMU-UST for the championship ..... a compelling Finals it will be:
** For one last time, we get to see a Black-Jarencio clash ..... scientific ball versus lakas ng loob
** Fitting that ADMU & Black gets one last chance to erase the stigma of the 2006 Finals upset by UST
** Fitting that UST be the one to prevent ADMU from getting the 5-peat ...... thus preserving the mojo of the 4-peat
** Jesuits vs Dominicans ...... one more time. There's actually some serious ribbing going on, between these orders ..... heard more than a few during my student years. >:D
War UST! ;D
if they can shut down Bobby Ray Parks, i bet they can shut down Ravena. ;)
wtf tapos na semis!!! wala ako napanood ni isa! kelan game 1???
Ateneo will definitely miss Erram's hustle and agility around the shaded area. Chua prefers to play outside and Golla is almost a non-factor.
My heart is with UST but i wont mind Coach Norman winning a 5 peat before he quits Ateneo and go back to the PBA.
No doubt Ravena will be in check but i feel it's gonna be Ryan Buenafe who will carry Ateneo on his back once again.
Interesting also are the match ups and it looks even.
Slaughter - Abdul
Salva - Mariano
Buenafe - Ferrer
Ravena - Teng
Tiongson - Fortuna
i don't want Ateneo to get 5 para sacred pa rin ang 4peat ng UST hahaha
Yes ;D It will be a classic series.
I will be rooting for the underdogs ;)
Quick question. A foul was called in the last shot (3 point shot), that Teng of UST took, which he missed. Even if there was no time... or minimal time left in the game, why wasn't he given the 3 foul shots?
nbc
Tiongson just got the better of Fortuna in Game 1 and that spelled the difference while the outputs of the rest of their starting fives cancelled each another out.
Again i felt it was Buenafe's BIG TIME 4 pts play that really knocked out UST.
What really blew UST was their third quarter, they were in disaray but recovered only in 4th. Salva had the good shots so he was the highlight, he really played well in this game. Abdul on the other hand played like a rookie incurring a lot of unnecessary fouls either they were from a bad call or just plain sloppy.
My bet withstood, Ravena wouldn't be a contributor in this game because he had a good one last time with La Salle. Ateneo's investment on Buenafe paid off a lot of times come crunch time. Kahit sobrang angas but he reminds me of Noli Locsin. Slaughter, nah he's just tall who can easily take a hoop before. Bantayan mo ng 2 wala na yun di na alam ang gagawin.
Well, it will depend on UST to comeback or else goodbye opportunity again. Mahusay at maliksi yung Ferrer, tingin ko malakas pa rin sila next year. Tingin ko it will be a big game next time by Ravena again.
That was what Pido was complaining about at the end but the replay showed that the ball was still in Teng's hands when the clock ran out. I guess that is the reason why the referees did not give Teng 3 free throws anymore. Even if there was a fraction of a second left there was no way UST was going to overcome a 5 point lead. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Pido should have just let it go. But I guess he was still sore at the foul called on Abdul against Ravena.
Sabi ni TJ may time left pa daw. 0.05 secs! unbelievable commentators in Boom and TJ.
Exactly, dapat di na sinabi ng commentators un, giving false hope pa sa mga fans na hindi nman masyado familiar sa rules..
It wont make a difference in the outcome of the ball game even if Teng was awarded three free throws so the refs just let go with a no call.
It wont make a difference in the outcome of the ball game even if Teng was awarded three free throws so the refs just let go with a no call.imo dapat pinag free throw pa din kahit in won't affect the outcome, para formality lang.
Since Jawo and Ginebra left the PBA, I hardly watch anymore.
Well, you may wana cheer for UST with Jarencio and his BIG J antics.
Yes I am actually. I did last Saturday and I will again on Thursday. I have been on a winning streak in my predictions since the NBA 2012 season so I'll try again = UST wins on Thursday.
There is more drama and excitement in collegiate basketball than in the PBA.
Well, you may wana cheer for UST with Jarencio and his BIG J antics.
Oh yah, in PBA it was Black vs Big J, now it is like Black vs Small J.
If Pido is able to win this series, most likely he will get a coaching offer to PBA as well.
Exactly, dapat di na sinabi ng commentators un, giving false hope pa sa mga fans na hindi nman masyado familiar sa rules..
complaining does not lead you anywhere, go out in the court play tough defense and that's it
"While the hand of Abdul got all ball, his elbow caught the body of Kiefer. You know, Kiefer is a very good actor, so he managed to get a foul," Badolato said. "There was really a foul, so we can't penalize officials for that."
parang contradictory naman yung mga statement na 'to.. may foul ba talaga o nakuha lang sa acting? looking at this video (around 2:21) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mnKkeQAJbo), I think Keifer just flopped..
With regard flopping and acting, I remember Philip Cesar as one of the best actors of all time, getting the 6th fouls of Fernandez and Jawo with his terrific acting. And oh yes, LIM ENG BENG. These guys are gurus when it comes to acting ;)for me flopping is a move only smart players can execute.. But I read somewhere that nba is taking this issue seriously..
It could be part of the psyche war to make other teams to focus or be conscious on this.
If Im Black, I will take Jarencio as assistant in the PBA. Their combined coaching style will seems to be very effective in the pba.
Si Pido parang si Jawo din mag coach habang nasa white board making a play..."Jerich!...ikaw ito...tapos BAM! BAM! BOOM!". Nagkaintindihan na sila nun!
whoever wins today, it will be 1-1.......
if UST wins, it's 1-1 for the series
if Ateneo wins, it's 1-1 for pido and norman
i would prefer the first one, though. go USTe!!!
very low scoring game
What a game! But I can't help to suspect that Karim might be dirty in this game. Missed free throws, missed point blank shots, turn overs on crucial situations (foot slipped), etc. Madalang lang akong maghinala pero malakas talaga kutob ko.

Ravena should have gotten the Finals MVP.. Salva may have been great offensively but it was Ravena who orchestrated everything for Ateneo..
Agree bro, but some field goals are point blank and the foot slipped? Come on! Lakas talaga hinala ko.
Are we seeing the resurrection of UP next year because of MVP? Abangan!
http://www.rappler.com/sports/13973-mvp-s-next-team-up (http://www.rappler.com/sports/13973-mvp-s-next-team-up)
5peat. I'm afraid the playing field will be leveled next season though. Slim chance of getting a 6peat.
AMDG!
Pati DLSU may foreigners na papasok next season...ADMU lang yata yung walang big man na itim next year (baka pati UE)

looks like ...Norman Black is going to UP...as MVP is trying rebuild and re-energize it's basketball team ..well rumors lang naman :)....
Sana Lang mabago ni coach pido attitude nya, yung complaining nya nakakababa ng morale ng players nya. Sa basketball lalo na pag may referee dapat tanggap mo na 7kalaban mo sa court.
Positive attitude sana instead of complaining all the time, he should concentrate on the game plan rather on officiating hehe. Sabagay ok pa din na 2nd place considering ateneo na mas professional when it comes to choosing the players.
One big five!! It might be a bit tougher next year with a more leveled playing field. We have a couple of serviceable big men and hopefully Ryan will be there next year. As long as Ryan, and Kiefer are there we'll be able to compete.
NU will be more competitive with two fil-ams and a couple of call ups from their players serving residency in team B.
Adamson has an african player who'll suit up also.
Next year will be very interesting!
SEMIS Game Result: SENIORS
Letran def. San Sebastian, 92-74. Rubber match will be on Monday, Oct 15, 5pm at the FILOIL FLYING V ARENA
What a game by Kevin Alas! 43 points with 10 3 pointers. He was on a Playstation mode. Madugong labang to sa Monday ;)
Letran deserve to be in the finals, they were the hungrier team. Played excellent defense in the dying minutes and maitained composure in the offensive endi remember biboy simon when playing with the now defunct mba. basta kita ring tira :-)
Same as last year, Abueva lost this game again for his team, he has not learned his lessons, last year he lost the game for his team as well, took ill advised shots when the game mattered most,
im an Alaska fan but i think the worst they did is pick Abueva over Hodge or Ellis, im not seeing this guy prospering in the pros baka parang si herny fernandez lang or biboy simon ang kakalabasan nito

^ plus 1, Abueva will excel in PBA if properly coached.. He has the talent, guidance na lng or he'll end up playing abroad..Anyway Before the game 2 started, i know abueva will score double double, But i was more concern on baste's dela Cruz and juico, these 2 G/F are smart players buti na lang ng focus masyado ky Kevin.. great game.. Next stop, the mighty beda..
Much like in the UAAP where UST was the clear underdog versus ADMU ....... LETRAN (Dominican yet again) will be the clear underdog versus SAN BEDA (MVP-backed yet again) in these NCAA Finals.
Strange parallels indeed ...... SAN BEDA has the talent and the championship poise to likely offset the heart of LETRAN.
I would have wanted for Abueva & company to get one more crack at the Finals ....... it wasn't meant to be for the Beast.
im willing to be proven wrong sir after all im an Alaska fan too so lets see where abuevas career goes.
He'll eventually be traded to one of the SMC teams so i dont expect Abueva to excel with the Alaska team.
as I said in recent post, not for any team actually
why do I have the feeling that it will be a difficult thing for Beda this time? Maybe because of the coach of Beda and it seems the guards of Letran are really hard to stop
id Go with Letran in this series
He'll eventually be traded to one of the SMC teams so i dont expect Abueva to excel with the Alaska team.
Much have been said about the upcoming superstars in Kiefer RAVENA, Jeron TENG, and Ray PARKS Jr but Letran's Kevin ALAS is a tough nut to crack. If he can win it all for Letran, then he'll finally get the recognition he deserves. If natuloy si kevin sa la salle 3 years ago, he and kiefer would have been a good match up..
Looks like clear foul by Alas on Pascual.
No protest from Baste?

Lions steal Game 1 62 - 60 against the Knights.
Art de la Cruz saved the day for the Lions with unexpected timely hits.
My first time at MOA Arena. I like Araneta better. The seats are smaller and you feel cramped. But the lighting is splendid and you need a jacket because it's cold!! Glad that game 2 is in Araneta on Saturday ;D
I've watched around 3-5 times in MOA for the UAAP games. Acoustically, Araneta is better! The Arena is "shallower" and quite steep if you look at the upper box sections. So if youre gonna watch a basketball game in MOA go for the patron or lowerbox seats. Though i
Proving that game 1 'almost win' was not a fluke.. Great team effort.. Go Knights..
(http://cms.interaksyon.com/interaktv/assets/2012/08/calvin-abueva-alaska.jpg)look at the length of his arms... no wonder at only 6'2" he can out rebound much bigger opponents.
GAME 3 WILL BE HELD AT THE ARANETA SMART COLISEUM ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2012 @ 1PM.
sold out na patron tickets, upperbox na lang. :)
Go Knights..
WTF?!!^% Yes Patron and Lower tickets have been sold out. And both camps are accusing each other of hoarding. Nasaan ang mga tickets? Magpakita ka!
-
Isang tulog na lang. May champion na bukas sa NCAA ;D
--
On another note, Alas submits public apology - http://sports.inquirer.net/67824/alas-submits-written-apology-heat-of-the-moment
bro nakakuha ka ng good tix? my connections have failed me so far. Even my insiders in ticketnet couldn't give me patron tix as it was allegedly given out to the schools. HOARDED for sure. Only upper b tix were left in the schools (had someone go to both my alma mater and letran). So clearly, may naghoard. kakabwisit. held out from buying upperbox b kasi mukhang langgam na yun. TV na lang ako if kahit upper A di ako makakuha.
^ Sa sulit meron nagbebenta ang patron P2500 sobrang mahal.
Meron ako nakuha sa lower box... :)
Umaasa pa. Still waiting for my contacts. Baka naman last minute maglabasan. Bahala na. Good luck to you. San Beda ka pala!! What's your batch?yes bro. haha. relatively "fresh" pa. batch 2008 na ako e. naabutan ko na yun naging co-ed. nung college ako, mas nadadalian pa ako makakuha ng tickets. kaklase ko kasi sila aljamal nun. haha
^ I never thought na ma sold out agad ang tickets, especially sa ncaa, maliit lng nman letran community.. But iba talaga pag rival.. Go knights..

Good luck to u bro, not to ur team though, Just kidding.. Sana wala ng ulan and traffic.. Btw, where's the best parking slot when going to araneta?.. The last time I watched there was 7 years ago..
Glaring stats by Kevin Alas sa Finals, 1/26 from the 3pt shot. ^-^
Are you sure about this? Ibig sabihin kung pumasok lahat e naka 78 points sya? Parang Kobe Bryant? Baka naman less than that?
Or you were just trying to exaggerate bro?
he was 1/9 in game 1.. 0/7 in game 2.. that's 1/16 in just 2 games.. didn't see the game earlier but judging from the score and knowing Alas' game, I bet he hoisted 10 3's earlier.. so 1/26 is a possible stat for Alas in 3pt FG sa Finals.. Alas is a good player but I've never been impressed with big time scorers from the NCAA especially in the recent years.. parang yun lang kasi alam nila..
looks like the Alas era in Letran is over.. Louie is leaving and Kevin is not sure he's coming back for his final year.. San Beda na naman 'to next year..
^^ Sayang nga yung isang championship di sana 7 peat na. Hirap kayang tibagin nun.
Anyway, the Red Lions literally massacred Letran. No Mercy Indeed. Ngayon wala na silang excuse bakit sila natalo. Sabi nung isang tiga Letran... pinaasa lang daw natin sila nung game 2.
Ito pa... the first and last cheer of Letran during the game was when the announcer called their first 5.
Victory Party Later!!!!
ANIMO!!!!
Really FEU? Di ba it's owned by Montinola's.. BPI's president..
MVP's dad is an alumnus of FEU but yes, it is owned by the Montinola's.Next season di na champion ang ADMU :p
UP and FEU na si MVP so if manalo FEU the trend continues (for UAAP)
Easy for others to discount Ateneo out since they would lose a lot of firepower with the departure of Nico Salva, Greg Slaughter, Oping Sumalinog, Justin Chua, and Tonino Gonzaga. More importantly, the loss of Mr. 100% Coach Norman Black and MVP is a big blow to the team and the other sports program of Ateneo.
But we'll see. Hopefully the team can hold its own just like in 2010 when it was touted to be FEU's year and Ateneo was the underdog. ANIMo! Seek the sixth.

It's more pun in PinoyDVD! ;D
Ateneo lang ang walang black player sa starting lineup next season...without slaughter and chua in the middle, malabo talaga. Lahat ng high potential players ng ateneo maliliit (newsome, murphy, etc)
Sa uaap parating may magaling na big man ang nag chachampion eh...hirap sa ateneo next season ang nipis ng front court. Kung wala silang tinatagong big man, ang starting front court next year baka erram and porter.
Afaik, you can play up to 5 years, batchmate nya si jason webb, kaya lng he was suspended for 1 year, for hitting dela cruz..
Ateneo did it in 2010. They only had Chua, Golla and Escueta as their frontline. They were a fast break team. Scoring in transition and scored off defensive rebounds. As long as kiefer, and ryan are there with serviceable big men able to box out, do screens, rebound then a final four appearance is not far-fetched. I believe. ANIMo.

They need a coach the players would respond to and respect. Perhaps MVP's pull-out is a blessing in disguise. Ateneo can now pick the right coach to replace Norman Black, definitely not Perasol!
Game 3

I would like to see Sabdy A. to coach the Blie Eagles.
And btw, animo is a basque term. It was brought here by friars. What I find "curiouser" is DLSU using it as the organization does not have any basque roots in the Philippines.
Compton eyed as next Ateneo coach
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/11/07/12/compton-eyed-next-ateneo-coach
Letran still hopeful Coach Alas will stay for another year and give the title run another try.I hope.. 1 more try.. :)
"Alex is seriously being considered," said Palou, adding that the sweet-shooting guard who also had stints as assistant coach in the PBA has already been interviewed for the job.
But Palou said Compton wants to make sure that he doesn't step on anyone's toes.
"What he said was he wants to make sure the picture is clear if and when he comes in," said Palou, who also mentioned the names of Sandy Arespacochaga and Jamike Jamarin as candidates.
I'm fine with Coach Jamike, Coach Sandy and Alex Compton. But i'd prefer the first two as they know the Ateneo system pretty well. If Alex Compton comes on, I hope he retains the coaching staff and maybe add Kirk Long in the coaching staff.
May ongoing PCCL. You can post your comments too ;D
That SWU coach should be fired ASAP ...... no place in sports for such an act.
Berating or calling-out players is one thing ....... openly hitting your player/s is a big no-no.
That coach should be fired ....... or better yet, demote him to a utility crew - teach him some humility.

good luck with that.. Alcoseba is a powerful man in Cebu.. matagal ng konsehal yan at champion coach dun kaya walang gagalaw diyan.. sanay na mga taga-Cebu sa ganyang attitude ni Alcoseba kaya hinahayaan na lang nila.. wala rin namang ngipin yung mga governing sports bodies dito sa atin eh.. yung BCAP gumagalaw lang pag may foreign coach na balak mag-coach sa PBA..
why is that so?
kung ang mga guro na nananakit ng estudyante pinag-iinitan ng media, bakit hindi magawa kay coach alcoseba?
he may be a big shot, but his attitude is out of place.
it's a fairly small tournament so there really isn't much media coverage.. yung mga nakapanood lang talaga nakapansin.. yung mga news outlets naman dito sa Pilipinas, pinapansin lang ang isang bagay kung sa tingin nila tataas ratings nila.. they'll do one story and that's it.. the game aired on ABS and they didn't even do a story on it..
and I doubt the school would sanction him as well.. he just led his team to a championship sa Cebu.. and then there's no governing body to sanction him..
the kid really has no avenue to file a complaint kaya nauulit..
but there is a law against child abuse, that is, if the point guard is still a minor.
MVP renews ties with Ateneo; Perasol new coach
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/11/26/12/perasol-tabbed-new-ateneo-head-coach
Bati na ulit sila yiheee >:D nung weekend ko pa nabasa sa Inquirer.
Tuloy ang ligaya ;)
sino nanalo sa 1st game ng Ateneo at UST kanina?
The team is not the same without Black.
Ateneo ties the PCCL finals after a 70-69 win in Game 2 just now.
I don't get why the referees didn't call a shot clock violation on UST on that possession. If the ball doesn't hit the ring and there is no clear transfer of possession, it is a shot clock violation. Kahit na-tap yun to Gonzaga, the tap isn't considered a clear possession. The transfer of possession happened when Gonzaga got the ball and not during the tap. Naka-breakaway tuloy si Kiefer. Still a good game, though. UST really matches well with Ateneo. But this time around, lamang na UST sa coaching.
UST wins the PCCL Championship, 81-76. Ang init ng 3pt shooting nila. Muntikan nga lang dahil they played not to lose after leading by 11 with 3mins left.
which championship has more weight, the PCCL or UAAP?
which championship has more weight, the PCCL or UAAP?
Easily, it's the UAAP ...... one of the most prestigious (pro or amateur) hoops crown in the land.
Ideally, the PCCL would have provided the toughest competition - since only top & seeded collegiate teams are invited ...... however, scheduling & many other factors prevent it from becoming a truly legitimate, all-collegiate crown.
Nevertheless, a great win for UST hoops ...... moreso for the graduating Fortuna & Afuang.
reason i asked is that the PCCL supposedly has the best all over the Phil, with UST winning it, I was thinking it has more weight that the one they lost to Ateneo, in any case at least this has shown UST is not the same weak team anymore and is capable of winning it all next season, I sure hope so its been a long while.
Why did Magsanoc step down as SBC coach?
after leading the red lions to the championship... coach ronnie resigns? something fishy is going on here >:D... We'll I do hope MVP lets him take the cudgels of the struggling UP Maroons ang bring back the fighting monicker that has left the squad in the last decade and so...
Jarencio to leave UST for PBA: report
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/12/26/12/jarencio-leave-ust-pba-report
Sayang naman, they will be the biggest contender in the coming UAAP season. I guess it's too early kahit nasa PBA pa sya in the early months of 2013.
Will a foreign coach in Toroman be allowed to coach in the PBA?
Db bawal un? Pwed lng bilang consultants ang foreigners.
usually, may nagrereklamo lang kapag malakas na team yung hahawakan ng coach. given that it's Barako, baka palampasin lang ng inutil na BCAP yan.
So they wont be consistent in their stand against foreign coaches specially in basketball.
Ok lng naman magrecruit ng mga blue chip players and DLSU provided they are home grown talents from the provinces and expose them into the BIG leagues.
What i'm really against are the recruitments of imports to play in the collegiate leagues w/c are suppose to be the training grounds for home grown players before they represent the Philippines in international competitions and then turn Pro.
Player recruitment from the provinces has been the norm since probably the early 70's ...... what is completely unacceptable & unethical are businessmen openly courting players and openly giving out perks when they come on board.
In the USA, such people (Danding, MVP, etc) are called Boosters and/or Friends of the Program ..... and what they practice is completely ILLEGAL ..... hence sanctions on erring schools will be meted out.
Over here, they are revered as heroes and praised by the media. O0
==========================================================================
I completely agree about the recruitment of "imports" playing in the collegiate leagues ........ I have long ranted against this practice in the earlier UAAP/NCAA threads.
Basketball is one sport in which the country, absolutely doesn't lack for collegiate-level talent ....... there are thousands of Filipinos just waiting to be discovered and molded for the leagues here in Manila.
It's clear that these imports come here, more to play than to study ...... consequently, other deserving players are displaced.
Like I've said before, what SBC has done (systematized and steady recruitment of imports) years ago will set a very bad precedent ..... look at the state of collegiate basketball now - one cannot count the number of imports playing.
Is the new residency rule from the UAAP applicable also to foreigners who transfer schools?
http://sports.inquirer.net/89865/new-uaap-rule-affects-2-prized-rookies (http://sports.inquirer.net/89865/new-uaap-rule-affects-2-prized-rookies)
I thought it applied only to HS recruits, and not to laterals.
^Lately kasi, DLSU isn't getting players that are graduates of other UAAP member schools.. so the rule won't affect them.. their recent recruits are from the provinces like that kid Kib Montalbo from Bacolod and the Cameroonian center from Southwestern in Cebu.. although Ben Mbala also has to sit out because he came from another league..
Most of this could have been avoided if there was no presence of BOOSTERS & PATRONS who sponsor certain universities.
Like I've said more than a few times, such brazen sponsorship of athletic departments is completely ILLEGAL in other countries ...... here, it is out in the open and even applauded by the majority.
To top it all off, these patrons aren't exactly known for fair business practices ...... they are in fact, known cronies of the two greatest dictators ever (Suharto & Marcos).
In Pingoy's case, the kid had already signed a document which shows his intent to remain with FEU for his collegiate years ....... a few weeks later, his father speaks out to media that his son will play for ADMU ..... I cant blame FEU's Montinola going bananas from the obvious piracy.
Watching Filoil tournament now.
Earlier, saw San beda vs NU. NU with Parks and Agora combo will be very dangerous!
Kagulo yung dalawang yun.
Now watching UST vs DLSU. gulat ako kay perkins. Wala na pala sa OKC, nasa DLSU na pala. Haha loko lang.
Perkins reminds me a mix of Willie Miller and Willy Wilson in one...good new addition to the Archers squad...
Shucks talo pala RLs ko.. ilan ang lamang?
The game between San Beda and St. Benilde was a perfect thriller to open the season.
Has anyone seen the new la salle players? 2 filams daw kya lng ung 1 under residency pa, Magagaling daw.. NU I think will be the team to beat this year, but I'm not counting out ateneo because of kiefer, and the always dark horse, UST.. FEU still has the best backcourt for me.. Wala pa ko team sa UAAP, bka nxt year pa.. :)
Go Knights (NC).. :)
Are you referring to Jason Perkins?
Strong UAAP Teams this year:
DLSU
Ateneo
NU
And both UST and UE

oh well. first time ateneo starts the season 0-2 since 2003. I still believe! Hopefully the injured players get well soon and start playing like they used to. Hopefully buenafe loses 10-15lbs to regain his mobility but he did quite well today given his current condition. 25points!++

Today? Db UAAP games are always scheduled on Thu, Sat and Sun?
Kanino natalo ang Ateneo today?
Sorry i'm not updated with the current UAAP games.
why is this Buenafe guy always out of shape? If I am the coach I will sit this player out untill he gets to discipline himself and be concerned about his physicality.

Ateneo lost two key games but those were close ones without Ravena. If all players are in tip-top shape they are still contenders.
I'm not that excited anymore watching the games unlike the NBA Finals because it looks like a PBA reinforced conference with imports sidelining the local players. Pathetic
Just saw the news today that Ravena will be sidelined indefinitely for Ateneo. So unfortunate for them if they are gunning for Anim-O and makes an unfair advantage for other teams.
Does this season count in his eligibility to play for the team in 5 years?
So true. Blame in on San Beda. They started it with EKWE and other teams followed with their own recruitments of imports. Hnd naman kailngan ng imports sa collegiate leagues. It's suppose to be a training ground for home grown talents. Dpat tlga ALL FILIPINO with some Fil-Ams to spice it up.
Was able to watch the game earlier between Adamson and UST. Great comeback by the Tigers. And a nice dagger shot by Jeric Teng to seal the game ;D
Malas pa Adamson at ninakawan yung locker room nila sa Araneta.
And speaking of dagger shots, that game-winning 3 by Sumang in the 2nd game between UE and NU was really something. The kid really has guts. Tied game, 21 secs left, no more shot clock. He let it run down to less than 10secs then he pulled up for a long 3 over Ray-Ray Parks. Swish may kasama pang foul. Napaiyak si Coach Zamar ng UE.
Ateneo de Manila starts the season 0-3. I sure hope the dark ages aren't back.
Yup, this season counts under his total playing years.
Why unfair bro? ....... Ravena was injured through his own actions and regular play - the normal risk that all athletes go through.
Now, local collegiate teams with a P20+ M annual budget from persons with no academic ties to the learning institution (note that this amount is the same amount used by PBA teams to run their season) ..... local collegiate teams which employ sports agents / scouts in the USA ...... IMO these are the legit unfair advantages. ;D
He was supposed to be the next Tenorio, now he might end up going back to Cebu.
Tallo is already in Cebu. He's playing with SWU. It's his third college team in as many years.
Recently, there was an article written on Nico Elorde switching to Ateneo and Tallo switching to DLSU. link as follows:-

Just read that Letran player Franz Dysam and his wife/gf were shot. Letran had a game earlier so it must have happened after. Concious daw yung player but his wife isn't. Letran coach Caloy Garcia confirmed the news. Hoping and praying they're both okay.

Just sad news ..... some news reports state that the authorities are looking at a possible love-triangle scenario (re: late wife was a former girlfriend of an ex-policeman).
I wonder how Dysam's parents feel. I'm thinking they may have had misgivings on their son dating someone 10 years older and already with 2 kids.
Ryan Buenafe bailed out the Eagles again with clutch plays in the end game vs the Tigers.
He's starting to peak up his game by showing his presence in crucial stages of the game.
"The only injury Ryan (Buenafe) has is his weight" - Coach Bo Perasol.
http://youtu.be/LmW7FEJZBrQ
Insane! Hustle from Newsome collaring the ball which was going out of bounds. Pass to Ryan and Newsome runs from out of bounds back to the court near the basket and a no look pass(?) from Ryan to Chris who finished it with a dunk! Great recognition, insane bball iq!
Now, if ryan only loses 15lbs more then he'd regain his mobility to back up the game and insane basketball iq he has.
Ano ba course ni Buenafe? Medicine? Parang ang tagal na niya sa ateneo ah??
Watching the replay of FEU adamson.. Romeo for mvp, although for me garcia is still better than him overall..
Watching the replay of FEU adamson.. Romeo for mvp, although for me garcia is still better than him overall..
Ryan Buenafe has always been the Robert Horry of local collegiate hoops ....... he can be non-existent most of the game/season, but will almost always find a way to hit big shots during crunch time.
It's not a knock on Buenafe when most say he's fat ...... it's obvious that he's "big-boned" and will always be on the heavy side of any scale. The weight appears to be natural to his family (cousin Ronjay Buenafe is on the heavy-side as well).
It's the UAAP, where slow and plodding bigs are not much of a liability (ex. Bono, Patrimonio, Buenaventura, Kong, Rolan, etc) ...... however, cracking a PBA rotation is a much different thing.
Should he aspire to make an impact in the PBA, Buenafe needs to take his conditioning very seriously.
Pag ba may sweep sa second round automatic na champions na or just waiting for the finals berth?
Ah, thanks Vinci. Akala ko parang nung panahon nina Espino sa UST nung 93 (yata).
I feel Ryan will do good in the PBA becoz he has the body to bang around plus he's an intelligent player who knows how to feed his teamates in certain situations of the game.
He also knows how to create situations to score.
I foresee him playing the same type of game as when he was with the Staglets of Baste.
He was very dominant coz he has the ball most of the time.
Playing for Ateneo and under Black's system somehow limit his game but still he adjusted well enough and showed his brilliance when it needed most.
It will be nice to see Buenafe joining the EXTRA RICE BOYS of Rain or Shine.
His style is a perfect fit to Coach Guiao's system and i'm so sure Ryan will excel under the watchful eyes of Coach Yeng.
The good thing with Buenafe is his basketball IQ and may hang time pa rin kahit mabigat..
Re NCAA, Beda is still the team to beat I think, sa laki nila nag mumukhang malnourished mga kalaban nila.. Go Letran..
May hangtime, may 3 pts, may barrelling drive, may post up moves. Just name it and he has it.
Parang pinaghalong Chito Loyzaga at Noli Locsin yn si Ryan and impact player yn.
So ROS draft him to join the EXTRA RICE boys.
How about this young Tamaraw - Terrence Romeo?
So far, he's been proving me wrong. I find him a ballhog but he delivers during crunch time. Matuto lang sana pumasa & better shot selection, he could be the best guard to come out of FEU since Johnny A.
Ryan Buenafe player of the game in today's match against adamson. 18pts. 9 rebs. 4 assists. He needs to lose more weight but i believe with the way things are going he'd be in perfect fighting form in a few weeks.
The technical foul spelled the difference. 2FTs for the T, winning margin = 2pts. Not only was a technical foul done in the court, nakipag-away pa faw sa fan after the game si Coach Bo. Tsk tsk tsk!
First to disclose, I'm from ateneo and i watched the game live. The fans from DLSU side were heckling and one even threw a mineral water bottle at Bo perasol. So understandably with Bo perasol being hot headed from the bone headed calls from the ref, he felt wronged and went after the guy who heckled the hardest. What I didn't like was araneta security not throwing out the fan immediately and moved too slow to create distance between Coach Perasol and the fan heckling fan wasn't even approached to stop all the shouting and heckling given that the game was over and the situation was escalating.

Time and time again, wala namang napatunayan si Bo when it comes to coaching. Ewan ko ba bakit siya piniling kapalit ni Norman. That's what you get for getting a cheap coach.
I wasn't there and I'm from DLSU so take that into consideration when you read my comment. I don't know if the thing about the water bottles is true. If it is then whoever threw it should indeed have been thrown out by security. But from what I understand, yung hinabol niya, was merely heckling him (and not the same one who threw a bottle) and I don't believe you throw out a heckler, however noisy or pointed his comments become. You'd practically have to throw out the entire statium. On both sides.
Coaches always tell their players to ignore the crowd and concentrate on the game. All the more the coach should be above whatever comment came his way. He should have known better. And at this point, I suppose (hope) he already does.
Di na kayo nasanay sa Ateneo-LaSalle games... I miss the days we had to keep baseball bats at the trunk of the car. Palibhasa bata at ang yayabang pa. Pero kung rambol na, I'm sure kanya kanyang takbo rin yun. :)
ADMU pala ako, and was pissed at how disorganized we are (again). Welcome to the post-Black era. Props to Vosotros and Teng.
Sana Chot or Olsen/Nash will be considered to coach for Ateneo. The Champion coaches Banal and Black really do not have Ateneo roots :-[.
I wonder what Commish Chito will do.
Time and time again, wala namang napatunayan si Bo when it comes to coaching. Ewan ko ba bakit siya piniling kapalit ni Norman. That's what you get for getting a cheap coach.
JJ Atayde has been banned for the whole UAAP season as well...
bawal na mag-heckle ang mga fans. :)
dati parang yung father ni nico salva na nakipagsagutan at hamunan kay ronald magtulis na ban din for the remainder of the season and umapela pa since last season na ni nico. though di ko alam kung natuloy ba yun.
I don't see any sense in banning a fan just because of heckling. Sadyang pikon lang talaga si Bo! Eh bakit siya hindi ibanned for life too? BoBo talaga!;D
i remember the arwind santos incident against one la salle's team manager..
Yep. Nico Salva's dad got into a shouting match with FEU's assistant coach Ronald Magtulis after the latter challenged Nico Salva to a fist fight and the dad stepped in. The appeal was not granted.
The UAAP has a history of banning fans from the venue once they step out of bounds. So JJ Atayde being banned for the rest of the season is normal.
i remember the arwind santos incident against one la salle's team manager..
Salgado ung family name. i forget the first name already. He has a lifetime ban.
Manny Salgado with the infamous "batok" incident.

I think the ban on JJ was wrong. He merely thanked the coach for the win, although sarcastic, nothing more was said. The incident with Salva and Magtulis involved exchanging of words were both individuals wanted to have a fistfight.
Had Bo Perasol just went straight to the dugout, this would've not happened.
Kahit saan ko tingnan tong insidente mas malaking pagkakamali ni Bo Perasol. Hoping Ateneo would be wiser next time in picking a coach.
uhhh.. that's the story that appeared in the news about "thanking coach bo for the win" sarcastically. There was more to what JJ Atayde did which were presented in the board meeting by the UAAP. Also, inunahan na ni JJ Atayde ung ban on him this season. He said that he won't watch the games for the rest of the season.
^ UE is already out of the running at 5-7.
If NU, DLSU and FEU all end up at 10-4, I understand that NU has the best quotient, so DLSU and FEU will have a playoff for 2nd/3rd (if that rule from Wikipedia is correct).
If NU, DLSU and ADMU all end up at 9-5, the score of the NU-ADMU game will determine who has the best quotient. I think ADMU has to beat NU by at least 10 points so that DLSU gets the best quotient. Otherwise, it's NU who gets the best quotient.
If NU, DLSU and UST all end up at 9-5, I understand that NU has the best quotient, regardless of the score of the DLSU-UST game. Not sure if DLSU-UST will have to play again just to determine 3rd/4th.
We'll get a clearer picture of the Final 4 after the NU-ADMU game on Wed and the DLSU-UST game on Sat.
If NU, DLSU and FEU all end up at 10-4, I understand that NU has the best quotient, so DLSU and FEU will have a playoff for 2nd/3rd (if that rule from Wikipedia is correct).
I think this is true and has happened before. Bale ang mangyayari parang best of 3 ang laban ng 2nd and 3rd seed. Instead of simply twice to beat for 2nd seed.
It'll be a virtual best of 3. :)
This leaves a bad taste.

Very interesting to monitor how the UAAP Board will resolve this on Thursday. I expect them to uphold ADMU's win if both teams will be considered at fault for violating the rule on suspensions in their game last Sunday.
If they'll uphold admu's win then why bother having that rule if they're not going to follow it? As indicated earlier, teams have a 24hr window to protest. If no team protested UE's violation within 24hrs why bring it up? It's not UE's fault.
^^+1 same point of view here. Yung sinasabi nila that there was permission given to him na pumunta is irrelevant (even if true). The rules are there, it's black and white. Suspended coaches are not allowed IN THE VENUE. I don't think that its subject to interpretation.
^^ If DLSU loses on Saturday, won't there be an extra game between NU and FEU just to determine 1st/2nd?
Nope. Quotient lang kasi seeding lang pinaguusapan. May playoff lang if the spot na pinaglalabanan ay may incentive. So yung ties for 2nd place at 4th place lang yung may playoff.
then just abolish the rules if that's what you want. bale wala lang pala eh since technicality lang. why point at the rules for this problem eh hindi naman yun ang nagcause?
No point arguing about the outcome due to technicalities.
If they wana set the rules straight, then dont start the game unless everything is clear.
State the protest before the start of the game.
Sayang namn un pinaghirapan ng mga players sa game then the losing team will just protest afterwards due to those technicalities.
Like I said, winning on a technicality doesn't look good ...... but if the complaint has all basis, unpopular or not, it should be upheld.
From the looks of things (what is revealed in the papers so far), UE has enough to warrant a replay/reversal of its last loss against ADMU.
I'd prefer Comm. Loyzaga uphold an unpopular, but correct ruling rather than get swayed by "forces" into making a popular, albeit wrong one.

Another thing that has to be considered in the matter. With the presence of Bo and Olivares which team benefited? Olivares couldn't couldn't have helped his team (being a player) while Bo could have coached his team during half time. In my opinion he could have thought that an advantage could have been gained with his attendance. I just find it "magulang"
Solomonic decision, IMHO. Well done, commish chito.
This what Palou did after:
Ateneo wants La Salle reps out of UAAP Board
By Camille B. Naredo, ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 09/12/2013 7:41 PM | Updated as of 09/12/2013 7:56 PM
MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo board representative Ricky Palou asked for the removal of La Salle representatives Henry Atayde and Edwin Reyes from the UAAP Board during their meeting on Thursday, claiming that they are not qualified for the position.
In an interview with ABS-CBNnews.com, Palou confirmed that he pushed for the removal of Atayde and Reyes from the UAAP Board.
“If you look at the rules, they are not qualified to be UAAP Board members,” Palou said. “The rules say that each university will be entitled to two board members. One must be an athletic director or a PE director, and the second board member must be a professor or a member of the administration.”
“Atayde and Reyes are consultants,” he said.
...
This is what happens when you don't let sleeping dogs lie.
In any organization, there are rules and policies that everyone simply ignore or loosely follow. There are rules and policies that everyone ignore because no one believes in them. There are rules and policies that everyone loosely follow for the simple reason that leeway is being given to the other person. In other words, there are rules, and there are rules! I guess if the other university board members are willing to explore the world of technicalities, then Ricky Palou would be more than willing to meet them head-on.
Agree. He should have not been at the venue even if he secured the permission of a UAAP Board member /technical member.
How about this "board member" who gave permission to Bo to be at the venue? Should this person be named and removed as well?
Just to declare, Im from DLSU but would still like the ADMU team to get to the final four. I like the team except for the coach.
Next question is why go after DLSU? Isn't it that UE was the one filed the complaint?
thanks for the info bro. I thought it was just a simple case of what happened recently. It has a deeper back story pala.
It's not just the basketball issue why Ricky Palou is going after DLSU reps. Let's just say that voting on a couple of issues UAAP wide not just limited to basketball (Eligibility, forfeitures, bans, etc.) wherein Ateneo and DLSU were on opposite sides and that yesterday DLSU tried to cash in the favors they dished out to the other schools for voting the way they did on those issues and tried to pull something.
Also, Henry Atayde resented the decision of having JJ Atayde for being banned for the season (when JJ atayde himself voluntarily said he won't watch the games this season - correct me if i'm wrong here) and wanted the ban reversed.
There are a lot of issues, basta as what sir brainwashed said this is what happens when you don't let sleeping dogs lie.
Think of the UAAP Board in terms of the game of thrones. Each school has their own vested interest and their vote on particular issues are not objective most of the time and they would seek alliances / favors / scratch your back you scratch mine when the time comes. Unfortunately, yesterday when DLSU decided to cash in the favor with the other members it didn't go their way and they got exposed and now Palou is calling them out on it.
For me useless ung elevating issues / overturning the decision of the commissioner by running to the UAAP Board.
PS. also for the board member who gave permission, i tried asking but wasn't given a name yet. haha. Basta, Bo only went to the venue because he got permission and the numerous observation that suspended players were at the games / immediate vicinity and that rule wasn't really imposed coz' their presence would not really affect the game and nobody really invokes that rule. Also, UE didn't protest the win but only asked for "clarification" on the rule by the prodding of some other school. haha.
All I wish for is to let the players/team win or lose it on the court. the league is too commercialized already.
Ateneo bows out from the Final 4.
Great game by UST. I hope they can beat NU twice and hopwfully play DLSU for the Finals para Teng vs Teng.
I like FEU on this year's F4.. DLSU may be the hottest team, but FEU's backcourt is/ will be unstoppable.. just my opinion..
btw alvin Teng has done a great job teaching his kids to be sport and play with all heart..
NU - Sy of SM
DLSU - Danding Cojuanco
UST - Lucio Tan
Who is the god-father for FEU?

I don't care who the protagonists will be ....... as long as UST wins. ;D
I don't care who the protagonists will be ....... as long as UST wins. ;D
Seriously, there's no monster team this season, unlike the past few ones wherein ADMU was heavily favored due to its loaded lineups ....... hence, any Finals match-up this year, is almost guaranteed to be close.
Right now, I'd give the slight edge to DLSU over the rest of the F4 cast ...... like I posted earlier, they are peaking at the right time - something very hard to contend with during the semis/Finals.
I feel that NU (Parks, especially) will cave in to pressure, either in the F4 or the Finals.
Bilib din ako sa Teng boys, walang kapa-kapatid kapag nasa court & both competitive though for me mas angat ang game ni Jeron & can still be polished.
jeron was wearing a yellow shirt that said "king tiger" at the ust-ateneo game as well. :)
oh romeo stop killing your team..
but, still romeo bags the MVP Award... (http://www.pba-online.net/basketball/uaap/FEUs-Terrence-Romeo-is-UAAP-Season-76-MVP/31105/)

Just sharing this old classic picture of what most basketball forums voted as the strongest high school basketball lineup of ALL TIME. This team, made up Paras, Magsanoc, Esplana, Pumaren, De Joya, Altamirano among others, beat their opponents by a whopping average of 30 pts or more.
Parang Dream Team sa Barcelona!
ps. the late Coach Dong Vergeire was part of that great team
game-turning point is yung missed dunk ni Mbe, and 3-point shot Teng...

Sorry to disagree but all the years he has coached the Tigers, UST has always been a contender.
He has been doin a fair share of his job and what i like about his coaching style is similar to the BIG J, "Laban!" "Never Say Die" old school but effective becoz of proper motivations to get the best out of his players.
Pido never been and will never be a tactical coach?

Was the UST - NU game today?
nbc
bukas pa bro.
What time is the game?
nbc
Coverage starts at 3:30pm with pre-game analysis and stuff. Game starts at 4pm.
Congrats UST! You just have to love coach Pido, big heart, all heart coaching.
Yes Coach Pido's intensity brought the best out of his players.
Un mga fundamentals and scientific coaching techniques, all coaches can learn by studying and attending seminars locally or abroad then relate them to his team/players but not all coaches succeed in bringing the best out of his players specially in the crucial games.
All coaches have game plans preparing his team for battle against different opponents but during the game it's still how good a coach motivates his players to perform to the highest level and never give up till the final buzzer.
I hope UST win it all.
Sorry loss for NU. If they had beaten UST then all their basketball teams, juniors, women's and seniors would be playing for the championships. As it is, they lost to UST. Their women's team also lost the first game to La Salle. At least their juniors team has a thrice to beat advantage against Ateneo.
Has there ever been a season where the champions for the three categories came from just one school?
Iyak si Alvin Teng!!!! hehehehe ganda ng laban!!!!
Congrats UST ;D Nice D by Abdul blocking Revilla's looper.
--------
Coach Pido very humbly says, "Breaks of the game... " Asked by TJ Manotoc ano iniisip nyang strategy next game, sabi ni Allan K, este ni Coach Pido : "Alam mo, TJ before the game lang ako nagiisip ng gagawin. After the game, hindi na muna ako nagiisip. Makainom lang ako ng malamig na San Miguel Beer masaya na ako..."
Idol Coach Pido!! No intelligent analysis. No fuss. Plain and simple "laro lang" and pure heart!!!
Very true, breaks of the game talaga after UST's turn over after a time out but they still played good defense and didnt lose composure.
Correct as Jeric said, it's their experience that won them the game.
When the game is on the line, it's all about HEART and that's what UST have PURE HEART!
Vindication for Coach Pido if UST can finish DLSU on Saturday.
THAT WAS A GREAT GAME! Kudos to the Glowing Goldies! Game One is yours...
I am sure Game 2 and 3 will be a thriller!
ANIMO!
That was a great game. Lakas ng mga import ng UST. Congrats!
Bawi tayo on the next game! Animo La Salle!
oo nga...talo ung mga import ng la salle.
Go USTE!!!
kabayan Growling Tigers na yata tagawa sa kanila ngayon.OT lang, Naalala ko tuloy yung pe shorts dati nung glowing goldies pa ang tawag, gold na short shorts!

Yup, Abdul is an import all right ..... I'm never in favor of these imports (my posts in the old threads), but here they are.I'm kinda out of the loop in UAAP, I'm curious who that import DLSU is bringing-in on season 78. Is this the Mbala guy? I won't deny that DLSU has a good recruitment team. During my years in school, Allado, Ritualo drove brand new cars back which were rumored to be provided by La Salle while we see Abdul of UST riding tricycles.
It's a good thing that the NCAA has stopped this unfair, albeit legal practice ..... hope the UAAP adopts it as well.
Abdul was locally recruited by UST of course, unlike DLSU which has long employed sports agent/s in the US - imagine that, a collegiate team with formal & systematic US recruitment. ;)
By the way, I can guarantee that DLSU's import playing in Season 78 will be the best import. Ever.

I like this Abdul guy. Has a good feel for the game. Didn't expect he has some range on those shots.
Regarding the recruitment process here in the Philippines which in a lot of ways create this line dividing the "haves" and the "have nots" in the UAAP. At first, I had some reservations regarding the matter until I finally submitted to the fact that basketball is indeed a physical sport where players may suffer injuries that can even threaten their careers. It's only economically reasonable for these kids, or in this case, their parents, to accept the best offer schools can provide while their talents are still "bankable".
As a Thomasian, I know we don't have the kind of luxury most schools have to attract top recruits but at the end of the day, the student-athletes win. Not only will they get compensated for doing something they love but more importantly, they will get education from schools their parents cannot realistically afford.
Anybody seen the Teng brothers get tangled after a free throw, muntik nang magaway haha o drama lang to spice things up.
Anyway, it would be interesting if the rumoured transfer of Franz Pumaren in the NU coaching side next year would finalize.
That was a great game. Lakas ng mga import ng UST. Congrats!
Bawi tayo on the next game! Animo La Salle!
Beg to differ bro ..... no amount of economic reasons can justify or hide the fact that what these crony/corporate sponsored schools are doing is completely unfair, blatantly unethical and illegal.
It goes against everything which a collegiate league should stand for ..... that is promoting sport, brotherhood, equality and fair play.
I'm glad that UST hasn't gone this route, despite having the means to do so ...... like Steve Uytengsu keeps saying, "win and compete with integrity".
Actually, may underlying statement yun "inom na lang ako San Mig Beer" kasi inulit pa ni Pido nung huli. Remember, SMB owns LaSalle. Loko rin si Pido!
Scored patron tix for tomorrow's game ;D
Animo!!!
Yes the UAAP should also stop the recruitment of imports. But I don't mind getting half Filipinos like Perkins and Newsome. At least they can play for the PBA and the national team.

Filams should be okay ...... they're Filipinos too. However, it should be controlled, screened and limited.Sir, I think that never happened where DLSU had ever had a year where half where Fil-ams. Allado and Cortez never even played in the same decade. Maierhofer was after Cortez' tenure. Wilson and Ramos were scrubs. Plus in DLSU, we have an intercollege league called LSAL, some of our players were standouts in that tournament like Aldeguer.
I remember when DLSU had more than half of its team made up of Filams (via their sports agent in the US of course) e.g. Cortez, Allado, Wilson, Ramos, etc.
Even a commercial league like the PBA has long realized the negative impact of having too many Filams - it instituted rules limiting the number per team ..... how come a collegiate league didn't follow suit.
Even ADMU's Fr. Tito Caluag wrote a scathing editorial then, admitting that his school and a few others were wrong in loading their lineups with Filams ..... that these Filams we displacing deserving local players, all in the name of trying to win a championship.

With current FIBA regulations, a player needs to have a pinoy passport at age 16 to play for the country. Last I heard, Newsome and Perkins do not qualify.
dapat talaga may limit ang recruiting..
cardona i think is not a filam, ng-tryout lang sya afaik.. medyo ot, if i remember parang si willie wilson ung na accused ng game fixing, parang sa kanya sinisi ung last finals nila, kawawa ung bata nun.. with fans watching live and tv na may replay, i doubt mag ka lakas ng loob ang players na magbenta ng laro..
Yup, it did .... plus Alvin Castro, Mon Jose, Mac Cardona, etc ...... some would likely be non-Filams, but the point is they were US-based/trained people recruited to play here - most via agent Mike Gonzales to boot.I'm not sure where you got this info. The Mike Gonzales/AMG problem wasn't the recruitment agency that got these guys, it's an agency that was rumored to limit some of the player's playing time if they don't sign up with them.
Willy Wilson was never a scrub ..... very intelligent player even then. Manny Ramos was definitely a PBA-scrub, but he fared well in the UAAP.
I never mentioned Maierhofer ...... he definitely came post-Cortez.
Like I said, Filams should be welcome, but needs to be screened, controlled and limited. Way too many local-based talents to fill-up the leagues many times over.
Sports agents should be banned in the collegiate leagues ...... in the US NCAA, a player who deals with a sports agent formally voids his NCAA eligibility.
I'm not sure where you got this info. The Mike Gonzales/AMG problem wasn't the recruitment agency that got these guys, it's an agency that was rumored to limit some of the player's playing time if they don't sign up with them.
To break down those 3 names you mentioned, Mon Jose's dad was a star athlete in DLSU and it was only natural for his family to choose La Salle. Same story as Alvin Castro. Then on Mac Cardona's part he tried out for several schools here in Manila. I even heard that DLSU wasn't even his first choice. It's just that he wasn't deemed good enough by the other schools. These guys weren't even highly touted players when they came in(and this includes Mike Cortez). The people highly publicized back then as DLSU's prized recruit after Ritualo were BJ Manalo, Carlo Sharma and Nicole Hernandez O0
Anyway, I read from a facebook post that in the finals between DLSU vs UST. The one who wins the 1st game always losses the series. Is this true?
bogus account yata, last two numbers xx haha pero dapat i-meet up yan tapos ipakulong for extortion!di ba na-click yan to show the number, anyway the account has been suspended na yata
di ba na-click yan to show the number, anyway the account has been suspended na yatayes, click to see the complete number.tingin ko naman legit.inayawan ko lang.San ka nakakita ng seller who would ask you to email your complete name and id number before ka bentahan?!
Game 3 is going to be anybody's ballgame. But IMO the one-week break favors UST. DLSU loses some momentum there. Kinda weird to have such a long break between games for a Finals series. Is it also true that, despite reports saying the MOA Arena will be the venue for next Sat's Game 3, this isn't confirmed yet because MOA Arena is already booked for another event? Even Araneta will be unavailable next Sat, per reports. Baka sa ULTRA ang bagsak nito. Para kumita naman ang Pasig scalpers!
Nice post-game interview given btw by Coach Juno Sauler. Almost heard crickets there. :)
No spit, just sweat, says Romeo on Teng incident
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/10/06/13/no-spit-just-sweat-says-romeo-teng-incident
Pawis lang po talaga yon, wala pong personalan. How ironic! Jologs ka talaga Romeo
Even if it's sweat to you, you'll do that to win?! Inamo dude
^ kadiri si Romeo, can't stop shaking my head when I saw that vid. kahit sa larong kalye di ko pa nakitang ginawa yun tsk tsk
AVO is a revelation this season, he's a beast inside! Jeron should start taking shooting lessons from Allan Caidic this off-season. seriously, UST's giving him all the time in the world to take outside shots!
Jeric is pouring his heart out every game, you can tell that he wants to win more than anyone this Finals.
Can't wait for the exciting game 3!
FYI. Our 1999 championship was won in Cuneta. Coincidentally, we were 0-1 against UST in that series and won the last 2 games.
ANIMO LA SALLE!
Both teams deserve the championship! WHAT A GAME!
i don't wanna be on mariano's shoes this time hehehehehe.
But that Kevin Ferrer and his dirty plays is really hard to like.
Animo La Salle! O0
same here for Jeric...
Jeron Teng: When the buzzer sounded I didn't know how to feel. My brother gave his all. For me, he deserved to be MVP. #UAAP76Finals
Jeron has my respect for keeping his humility and thinking first of his Kuya, despite the big team win...
Congrats La Salle. Great game.
Animo!!! :D
There's this one sequence from ust that really confused me.dlsu was leading by only 2.but they thought it was a good idea to heave 3-4 3pt attempts.
Yung mariano ba lahat tumira nun?
ganda ng laban. congrats la salle. naawa lang ako kay jeric. all heart yung bata kaso kulang sa suporta talaga. yung last play sya pa pinag inbound sana sya na lang tumira. and si mariano....wala ako.masabi.hahaha
I am an Atenean but it is hard to discount the fact that this could very well be the beginnings of a dynasty for the guys in Taft.

Honestly, I don't want that Mbala player in La Salle. Masyado syang malakas baka masira pa ang chemistry ng current roster. Idevelop na lang yung mga rookies para patas lang ang laban. Parang ang dumi pating maglaro based on that youtube links.
Anyway we'll see. Kailangan muna nilang mag two-peat next year.
Mbala will only play come 2015.
5 players will be gone by then:
De La Paz, Luis Alfonso
Revilla, Luis Alfonso
Tampus, Jarelan
Torres, Norberto Brian
Vosotros, Almond
Which current roster will you be worried about then?
heads up guys
http://sports.inquirer.net/124383/ncaa-cancels-basketball-games-monday-due-to-inc-event
assuming la salle's players meet the academic requirements, only revilla will be ineligible for the next season. de la paz, tampus, and vosotros were in their fourth playing year. norbert torres and van opstal were in their third. though i think the former can play for only one more year because he already earned his degree.
^ that is kung medyo mahaba pa ang oras. Allan Caidic was a good example of that kind of play.

Ayos, in 2 years DLSU will have a 4th year Jeron, a Kib and Perkins 3rd year, and a Mbala and Kobe rookie. Plus a 5th year AVO if he stays.good luck to the other schools then ;D
The six-foot-five Paras, who is this year’s World 3x3 slam dunk champion, was spotted at the victory party of the Green Archers last Saturday, where he was seen with businessman Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, who is considered La Salle’s top sports patron.
“I’d be loyal kasi si Boss Danding pa 'yung tumutulong sa akin, so I’d be as loyal as possible,” Paras, who is currently a high school junior, told Spin.ph. “Malamang nga dun na ako. As of now, 'yun na muna siguro masasabi ko. I’m leaning towards that (playing for La Salle).”
Long have I ranted against these unfair and unethical practices.
In the US NCAA, this is considered BOTH unethical and illegal and will result in some heavy fines and school/player suspensions ...... here in Da Pilipins, it's out in the open for everyone to see and the unwitting press to marvel at.
On the flipside, we still can see some vanguards of truth. It's ironic that the man was once a member (via marriage) of the crony elite ...... but Tommy Manotoc was always a sportsman and played fair.
He and a few other alumni (Kurt Bachman) were the first, and perhaps the only ones, to lambast DLSU officials and it's recruiting practices e.g. fielding ineligible players from 2003-2006 ...... all leading up to DLSU being suspended back in 2006.
Here's his very truthful column, filed on the eve of this year's game 3.
Where’s the UAAP headed?

It appears to me that the UAAP has now quite a situation in its hands.
With the way the outcomes of the games are panning out, the league, indeed, has much to think about. It seems to me that this is a perfect time, before the final game is played, for the board to rethink where the league is headed and what its intentions truly are.
Let’s not kid ourselves into believing that the UAAP is still only a collegiate league that merely facilitates the provision of scholarships to those athletes who can’t afford the tuition, promotes sportsmanship among its student-athletes, and provides a bit of entertainment for the college student and alumni alike.
Those days are long gone. Just looking at the amounts of money that prized recruits are receiving boggles the mind.
Could this be why many of us seem to be losing our sense of objectivity, logic and civility, passing judgment and observation on the events that have transpired this far, only to the tune of one’s particular music and color?
The league is clearly masquerading as a college league. In reality, it has already turned commercial in a big way.
The schools involved have always had their pride on the line. What is different this time are the investments involved. The money spent by each school to reach the Final Four is enormous. Consequently, there is now too much at stake in each and every game that is played.
The question now is: Is this the direction the UAAP board wishes to continue to take? Is this the direction we—students, alumni, investors—wish the league to take?
If previously, these collegiate leagues were established to promote sportsmanship, and so that everyone involved should have a bit of fun, should we now just accept the fact that schools these days use the UAAP as part of their marketing strategy to promote themselves?
Perhaps the UAAP board should look into how they could put some checks and balances on how much is spent on the recruitment programs to make it fair game for all schools.
For at the rate it is going now, there will be only a couple of schools who will be able to build a competitive team.
Also, since we also want to develop our local big guys, including the Fil-Ams, the board could also consider putting limits on the number of imports of non-Filipino lineage in the lineup of the team.
Perhaps with these measures we may regain the values which had prompted the league’s founders to put up the UAAP in the first place.

From SPIN.ph again:
UAAP ban on foreign players imminent (http://www.spin.ph/sports/basketball/news/uaap-ban-on-foreign-players-imminent-as-league-reaches-consensus-says-top-official)
If this gets approved and they implement the ban on imports in Season 78, tatamaan nito si Mbala and the ADMU imports?
Another addition to La Salle
Kobe Paras picks La Salle over UP, report says
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/10/15/13/kobe-paras-picks-la-salle-over-report-says
sadly not many would agree with you or Tommy on this. Many basketball fanatics now a days would remain to their cause of being avid fans and supporters. Championship is all that matters, how the game is played would be secondary. Many schools would resort to all means just to get that championship NO MATTER WHAT. Gone are the days were the school would play for pride or players for that matter. Nowadays when you hear of players playing really well in their early years, only three schools would come to mind when they play college basketball. Even in volleyball the same is true. Nowadays when money talks, a lot of people listen.
I dont even think this is going to improve at all, what with the PBA being run by the same people running the schools that is into getting blue chip players even as early as them learning how to walk. Talk about investing at the earliest.
Di pa naman daw done deal, only if he goes to school here.

Krets, Andrada had ACL...just like when LA Revilla had Dengue and Diabetes problems, he sat out one year and "joined" the coaching staff...same with Yutien.
Jon/Onedown...LA Revilla will still play one more year and this has been confirmed...so DLSU will be intact + 3 more players to complete the 16-man roster...Yutien is No. 14 so 2 more...Thanks!
^ Kib I think is better than Torres, konting maturity lang..
Yes sir...LA decided today to join the PBA draft so starting PG next year would be Thomas, back-up is Kib. Good luck to LA!
pardon my ignorance, was there ever a time a player out of high school was allowed to play or drafted in the PBA?
IIRC the last one was Terry Saldana .....
IF true, malaking koga-guhan ito, byers http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/10/28/13/cagers-stint-outside-tourney-may-dq-san-beda
Nagtataka lang ako, tapos na UAAP pero bakit ang tagal matapos ng NCAA?
Surprisingly, Alaska, a known DLSU bailiwick, chose Blue Eagle Ryan Buenafe.
Letran is through to the Finals. They won 85-58 vs San Sebastian. Almazan had 19 pts, 22 rebs and 9 blocks. Ang laki ng improvement ng batang 'to. Palaki lang sya ng katawan and he'll make an impact in the PBA, especially on defense.
That is why i prefer Almazan over Sangalang even over the softy Slaughter who with his height, i dont think he can dominate in the PBA unless he eventually can take those very rough physical contacts.
I still recall Fajardo in his debut cut his chin/lips goin up against Belga.
There any DVD media available for the UAAP finals?
When is Game 2 of Letran vs San Beda?
I wish the Knights can win Game 2 to force a rubber match.
Congratz to San Beda for winning the NCAA Championship.
Their import really spelled the difference during the end game with his defense.
Art De la Cruz very deserving to be named MVP of the finals.
He was a huge loss to Ateneo but a tremendous gain for the Lions.
^ But this game is just an exhibition match and not a UAAP game. Isn't he already playing for DLSU in other tournaments?

Bobby Ray Parks also left NU to try his luck in the US.
Probably the only pinoy baller in his teens ever mentioned in Sports Illustrated, I hope he can reach his potential in the US. Eric Altamirano ran a very rigid system that didn't really benefit Bobby Ray.
The next 5 years look good for our Team Pilipinas. Let's hope politics and greed don't stand in the way of us getting the best basketball team possible.
No doubt Ray Parks Jr has a good shooting touch but he is not as hard driving as his Dad used to be.
If only he can attack the basket like Jerone Teng then he'll be hard to stop.
FINALLY, the actual rootcause is being tackled and discussed in the open.

Like I've long ranted in these UAAP/NCAA threads, these cronies and tycoons who openly RECRUIT and PAY high-school standouts (even non HS seniors) and their relatives, are the rootcause of whatever ills the UAAP & NCAA have.
It's no secret that guys like Danding Cojuangco, MVP & Sy's henchmen openly pirate, recruit and PAY HS standouts, their relatives and even potential college transferees (NU's Santiago sisters, anyone?) using their checkbooks.
This has been the norm for decades now and its a mystery that nobody seems to deplore these unethical practices.
If the US NCAA can impose it, why can't we?
Let's face it, the college leagues in the PH are highly commercialized and politicized, even on smaller leagues like the CESAFI and the Tiong Lian Basketball Association.
Impose what bro?
Strict rules on amateurism.
http://www.ncaa.org/remaining-eligible-amateurism
some schools can only offer "minutes per game" para ma retain ung players nila sa senior..
It's good that the US NCAA has streamlined their existing rules and regulations ...... however, they've always disallowed direct "benefits" being given by benefactors to student/prospects.
Take this recent article ......
http://www.spin.ph/sports/basketball/news/kobe-paras-move-to-us-has-blessings-of-la-salle-backer-cojuangco-says-dad-benjie-v02
“As of now syempre, priority pa rin niya yun (commitment with La Salle). Syempre si Boss Danding naman kasi yung nagpapa-aral sa kanila sa high school … silang magkapatid (ni Andre), syempre, priority pa rin namin ang La Salle,” said Paras.
Benjie Paras basically confirms that his son's HS schooling are funded by Danding Cojuangco (!) - all for the final goal of securing the services for the UAAP seniors.
How about Alvin Teng being hired as assistant-coach for SMCorp's ABL team, at about the same time that Jeron Teng committed to play for DLSU.
Even a whiff of such things will trigger an investigation in the US NCAA..
Hard to say but if you are the father of a super athlete, you will also want him to get the best offer the world can give him.
Of course, I would want my son to get the best the world can give him ........ but what I've been seeing in the UAAP for a long time now - what parents want and what is ethical & fair can be two VERY different things.
Call me old-fashioned, I wouldn't take anyone's money just to get my son to commit to something down the road ...... it's not what I was taught growing up.
But who can resist the best offer being offered scholarships plus allowances and a bright future for the whole family by a certain investor?
As an investor of course you will only give the best offer if you see a good future of your investments and they just make those irresistable offers but they don't force those athletes to accept.
That's exactly it bro ..... athletic scholarships are supposed to be offered by the school itself and not by private individuals who expect long-term athletic commitment.
Offering tuition, monetary allowances, jobs to relatives, etc to athletic prospects are clear-as-day, plain and simple - unethical practices.
You ask who can resist such an offer - count me as one ....... I'd prefer scholarships & allowances gained the traditional way.
Personally, it wont be hard for me to refuse a person such as Danding ...... the guy is a crook - he has stolen billions, stolen lives and has yet to see a day in jail. ;)
Regardless of what ethics involved, those talented young athletes are offered to study, play and represent respective schools.
In any field, if you are extremely good, irresistable offers will come and it all boils down if you will grab it or not and I say I'd be a hypocrite if I say I will to bite to the best offer that will secure my future.
Tim Cone left Alaska for a better offer by the San Miguel Group and so did Ryan Gregorio and even Jong Uichico left the San Miguel Group for the MVP Group.
Tim Cone, Gregorio, Uichico, etc transferring to rival teams ...... these are professionals bro - normal market and business procedures apply to them.
The UAAP/NCAA is completely an amateur & scholastic league ...... schools offering scholarships & allowances are normal school practices.
When private individuals offer money, jobs, cars, etc to prospects and their relatives, it is completely unethical. In the US NCAA, it is considered ILLEGAL.
It's surprising that it took a long time for school officials and half-decent politicians to deplore such acts. Hope FEU & Sen. Pia Cayetano's initiative bear fruit soon.
==============================================================
I recall a scenario from the movie THE BLIND SIDE (based on a true story) ...... the female protagonist, Sandra Bullock, adopts a neglected boy out of the goodness of her heart.
It turns out, the boy (now NFL player Michael Oher) has supreme athletic skills and is soon being recruited by top NCAA colleges.
Two things from the movie that are are actually true items from the US NCAA.
1.) College recruitment is very formal. A letter of intent is sent out by colleges and should be formally replied to by the prospect.
2.) The adopting parents were investigated for possible NCAA recruitment violations due to the nature of their relationship e.g. adoption to ensure commitment to the parents alma mater.
That's the US. This is Philippines.
Education, Money, Work and a Bright Future. These are probably one's dream so who will ever resist those offers anyway? I won't.
