Title: Movies You Wish Were On DVD
Post by: EBTGmike on Apr 04, 2001 at 02:56 PM
Any old movies you want to be seen in DVD format ? Its like the Most Requested DVDs or Top Customer's Request at Amazon.com . Either you like the story or something else(like it brings back fond old memories of the good old days). This also includes your favorite  movies(story wise or special effects) not yet on DVD format. My partial list(seventies and eighties):

Worth Winning (Madeleine Stowe/Mark Harmon)
Vital Signs (Diane Lane)
Gross Anatomy (Matthew Modine)
One on One (Robby Benson)
The Robe
Omega Man (Charlton Heston) - coming soon
The Natural (Robert Redford) - coming soon
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (animated)

And 17 out of the 20 Most Requested DVDs at Amazon.com

You can add The Godfather Trilogy to that list.

I also want a re-release of Pulp Fiction & The Usual Suspects with more features this time.

Hey Dobler!  ET is indeed coming to DVD! They've adjusted some of the effects daw, ala Star Wars for a new Theatrical Release and DVD.

Yeah, I read about Spielberg's plan to add new footage and effect shots. Rumor has it that Harrison Ford does a cameo as Eliot's principal. But the DVD release is still a long way off, sometime in 2002.

Godfather, Torch Song Trilogy, Maurice, Funny Girl and Yentl (Would even settle for a VCD for that one but there seems to be none.)

Komikero, yes shogun TV mini-series would be nice. Also the following (from TV):

Hill Street Blues
Roots
Greatest American Hero
Welcome Back Kotter
Happy Days
Danguard Ace (this one, for me,  is one of the more mature Robot Animation at that time with a more serious storyline)

I'd like to add "THE MISSION" with Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons. Unfortunately, I received an email from Amazon saying that there are no plans to release this disc anytime in the near future.

It will be moving to this site

Back to the DVD...
Like everyone else Lucas' Trilogy and its prequels.

i heard that they have a very good picture and sound quality, and where mastered from the old laserdisk box set w/ d.d5.1

i still have my laserdisk copies so i think i can still wait till 2006

I read in Entertainment Weekly that the Godfather Trilogy is finally coming out before the year ends - probably around Christmas.

Winnie the Pooh would be my pick. I still enjoy my dog-eared VHS copy up to now. I bought The Tigger Movie to see what all the fuss was about. Overall, great animation and a fairly entertaining storyline, but it still doesn't measure up to the original film.

I'm also waiting for Buckaroo Banzai which became a sci-fi cult classic in the eighties. It's been out-of-print forever - even on video tape.

I would've listed The Six Million Dollar Man but it came out in the UK last week. That's the last thing I ordered before flying off to Cebu!

Thats why I have to make do with VHS purchases of ST:TNG episodes from amazon.  :(

And they could have included more features and add ons on the ST:OS dvds. Putting in trailers are not enough. Should have included trivia and/or background - behind the scene info on the episodes plus info/trivia on the cast and s.
Its a waste of DVD space :(

Hey lazy_maze!

I want The Mission on DVD too!! I signed up at Amazon's site to be informed once the title is about to be released. Unfortunately, I got an email not too long ago from them, essentially telling me that a DVD version of it is unlikely to appear in the near future. Oh well. I think we'll get there eventually.

And to add to my list, I want to see Lost Horizon (the 70's musical version) on DVD! What can I say? I like it.

lazy_maze, your doubts are well-founded. While the newer Hongkong R3 DVDs are actually very well-made, pre-2000 discs suffer from mediocre video quality and/or atrocious subtitles. Raise The Red Lantern, for example, is marred by a so-so transfer and subtitles that are almost unreadable. Too bad it's not available anywhere else.

Starman, I also have Excalibur (R3) but I have not yet played it. (Isa-isa lang ang panood, galit jowa ;D ). I also have

Yagballs, have you seen the original An Affair to Remember? The ending moved me to tears though I like Annete Benning more.

Going back on track, I saw a posting re Final Countdown. Alas, they have not yet decided to release one in NTSC format. I checked amazon and a german release (R2/PAL) will be made by July. Using my limited German  :D , it seems the disc will not have the original English track  :'(  .

Well, I just hope they release FC in English preferably flipsided with the Japanese take on the movie (Remember that Jap movie which was released to cash in on FC, where a Jap gunship and tank was sent back to mideaval Japan but never returned). I just forgot the english title it was released on.

No I haven't seen it, but I'm curious though... :)

Actually, "Love Affair" with Warren and Annete is the 2nd remake of this classic. "An Affair to remember" (1957) is the 1st remake with Cary Grant, and Deborah Kerr. The original "Love Affair" (1939) stars Irene Dunne, and Charles Boyer.

Also, I will add my childhood favorite, "Flash Gordon". Remember the music playing when he was about to storm Ming's fortress? "Flash! Flaaa-aaash! (something, something) universe!" I hope I got that right. hahaha  ;D

Yes, Flash Gordon (Flash, aha, savior of the universe). I also remember how I got outbidded in eauctions when a dvd copy was placed on the block  :'( . I'm still hoping one will surface again somewhere.

So what I did was buy the complete soundtrack with Queen. That's the next best thing.

The Japanese film "Shall We Dance?", which was released in the US, i believe, by Miramax. Around two years ago, it was either the highest grossing Japanese film of all time or the most-awarded?  Saw it at a Japanese filmfest at Edsa Shangri-la. Made a VHS copy from an LD rented from video take-out and have been lending it out to friends.  Everyone ive lent a copy to loved this funny, sweet, romantic movie

So this thread's been around since the beginning of PinoyDVD. Thanks, bently, for bringing it up! ;D

I'd really like to see on DVD:

"Who's Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?" - doubt if there's any chance of this as it didn't even make it to Laser Disk. It's a George Segal, Jacqueline Bisset, Robert Morley movie about an epicurean magazine and the murder of the chefs who create the "most fabulous meal in the world". :'(

"Two for the Road" - haven't heard any news about this, but they've been coming out with more Audrey Hepburn movies, so this would someday be in line. Maybe benny can enlighten us. ???

Most of the other movies mentioned on this thread particularly Mel Brooks' movies. 8)

And a lot of other movies... ;)

Saturday Night Fever - all-time fave movie with John T.

Sapphire and Steel - cult classic British sci-fi series from the '80s starring David McCallum and Joanna Lumley as elementals who repair damages to the corridor of time by unseen, unnamed enemies. Think of it as Dr. Who and X-Files combined. Critics have called it "enigmatic, fascinating, and a one-of-a-kind series the likes of which we may never see again." Only lasted 2 years. Even the recently released VHS tapes (late '90s) are hard to find and can be seen only in auction sites put up by sellers from the UK.

Masada - the TV mini-series starring Peter O'Toole and Peter Strauss

Special Editions of all the Classic Star Trek movies

While watching the BBC Documentary on Frank Sinatra, the song - "Young at Heart" was in the background. It reminded me of this movie where this song was played, if memory serves me right, at the end.

is Rashumon already out on DVD?

Rashomon R1 will be released next week by the Criterion Collection. An R3 version has been available in Hong Kong since last year, but the subtitles would probably drive you nuts.

I'm waiting for Belle Epoque (a Spanish comedy starring a very young Penelope Cruz), Flight of Dragons, Fire and Ice, and Shall We Dansu?.

The 60s musical bomb Man of La Mancha starring Peter O'Toole. Though it was justly criticized for its ponderous approach and Sophia Loren's non-singing, the material touched me when I was a kid in college. And I saw it on black and white TV as a late night movie. Peter O'Toole still makes a grand case as an idealistic knight fighting a lost cause - and the ending, when Cervantes goes up the Inquisition facing potential torture and execution amidst the cast singing "My Impossible Dream", personally for me it redeems a lot of the rough edges.

JOURNEY OF HONOR (1991) presents an epic set in 17th-century Japan. One clan, led by the warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toshirô Mifune), is locked in a bloody feud with a rival clan. Ieyasu decides that the only way to achieve victory is to send a band of soldiers to Spain to obtain flintlock muskets that will fire even when wet. To this end, Mayeda (Shô Kosugi), Ieyasu's most trusted samurai, leads a party to appeal to the King of Spain  (Christopher Lee). However, their difficult journey is plagued by treachery.... The film features spectacular action sequences and an all-star cast, including Japanese film icon Mifune in one of his last screen appearances.

The acting here was really rotten but I'd really like to have this in DVD format because of the theme of the movie and the soundtrack is EXCELLENT <-- my opinion only of course.

I enjoyed singing and watching this movie as a kid and i still enjoy listening to it, coz the CD is the only version that i have, even if the acting was really lousy. If I get this on DVD ... Whoooo my life is complete already as a DVD collector  ;D

Yes, there was!

Very, very limited. Even Marilou Diaz-Abaya doesn't have a copy. I actually thought it was pirated, until blitzkreig brought his very special disc to the PinoyDVD 2004 EB.

We actually have a thread about it on these forums: http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=40541.0

Pero tama ka... I wish this disc would have a commercial release already.  ;D

duck soup at a night at the opera lang naman ang considered na outstanding movies ng marx brothers, unless na favorite mo sila.masyadong magastos pag boxset na.

the movies i posted above are mostly available on dvd but in other regions and/or rare pa rin kaya i wish that they will be released commercially.

mga world cinema na sila, sa hollywood kasi, african queen na lang at jazz singer ang di pa nare release sa mga 100 films ng afi.

kaya puro world cinema na ang inilagay ko at yung mga too common,di ko na ininclude.

I have been trying to look for a DVD copy of "THE CARMELITES" which is about the 16 Carmelite Nuns who were put to death during the french Revolution via guillotine starring Jeanne Moreau. I saw this when I was about 12 or 13. I think this was produced sometime in 1960 or was it 1962. this movie is based on the opera "Dialogues of the Carmelites". Would anyone know if there is a DVD copy of this movie?

I have checked at amazon a few days ago. No they don't have a DVD copy of the one with Moreau on it. I guess they have the English Opera version in Australia on DVD. A few years back I think there was a VCD copy of the film but it was not available. I might order the Australian English Opera version in the meantime....

I even emailed this swiss guy at the amazon who mentioned that he has a DVD copy of the original film produced in 1960 but it turned out it was not the film with Jeanne Moreau and it is in French without sub-titles. Sayang....

There were talks and plans before since Cinema One holds the copyright and the masterprint of the film, but too bad.......they have no rights to release the film on dvd.

Really confusing on who will take the plunge to release it on dvd since the studio who owns the film ECP, no longer exists.
