from thedigitalbits:
The big one is Disney's revelation that The Little Mermaid is due to be their next classic animated title to receive Platinum Edition treatment. Look for the 2-disc set to hit stores on 10/3 (SRP $29.99). This is the first time in 7 years that the film will be available on DVD. Expect deleted scenes, audio commentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes, along with archived art materials and musical-based features as well. Both the film and its soundtrack are being digitally restored for the release. There's no word yet on a possible Blu-ray Disc version of the film, but we consider it very possible.

I will buy this DVD even if I already have the limited release version (na walang extras, bwisit!).  I consider this film to be one of my all-time favorites, and I'll make sure to get the most complete version kahit gaano kamahal.

Among the Disney DVD news it bears is that the fall's two-disc The Little Mermaid: Platinum Edition will offer "behind the scenes, all-new games, secrets and more" (who'd have guessed?!), the upcoming Chicken Little will contain at least one Easter Egg (access instructions are offered), and June's Dumbo: Special Edition will include (not unlike the 60th Anniversary Edition) "an all-new rendition of 'Baby Mine,' sing along songs, two bonus cartoons, and much more."

from Ultimatedisney:

While Disney has yet to formally announce the contents of this October's Platinum Edition re-release of The Little Mermaid, they have passed on a few details to retailers, which naturally went public very quickly. Those details confirmed a Collector's Gift Set will be offered for the 1989 hit and revealed that the two-disc set will include an all-new digital restoration, an all-new Disney Enhanced Home Theater Dolby 5.1 soundtrack, "FastPlay", deleted scenes, "The Story Behind the Story" on Hans Christian Andersen, "The Making of The Little Mermaid", the Imagineer-spawned Little Mermaid Virtual Ride, an all-new music video, a sneak peek at The Little Mermaid III, and "much, much more." That last part remains to be announced.

 ??? ??? ???

from Ultimatedisney

April 12, 2006 - In a departure from tradition, BVHE has stated that there is no Collector's Gift Set currently planned for this fall's Platinum Edition title, The Little Mermaid. The past three Octobers, Disney animated classics have simultaneously made their DVD debuts in standalone 2-disc Platinum Editions and as part of deluxe gift sets, containing a hardcover book, signed concept art of characters, and a film frame and carrying a $49.99 list price. As Mermaid's much-anticipated return to DVD remains just under six months away, plans still could change. As usual, the most effective way to have your feedback reach the studio is by calling their customer hotline (1-800-723-4763) or e-mailing [email protected].

They do include the slipcase w/ the DVDs. All the DVDs I ordered from them came w/ a slipcase(if they come w/ one). I guess it depends on the supply they get. You can try calling Disney US. I don't know if they still give out slipcases, but before I was able to ask for a couple to replace my damaged ones.

Pero sana gawin na rin nilang two-disc set. Like Nemo, Monsters Inc., Incredibles. But since this is an old movie, most probably nga ay single disc release lang. I wouldn't wait for this title to go on 'sale' for me to buy this.

mine was already checked out, but the price will be adjusted when the preorder item's price is lowered only. if you just keep it in your cart and price goes up, then price on your cart will also go up. well, this is according to their preorder price guarantee (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/468502/pop-up/104-6706728-4965503)  ;D  however im not sure what amazon does when an item is in your cart for days then it runs out of stock.

The disadvantage of that is if the preorder price goes UP (and that happens frequently), you won't get the lower price from when you saw it.

==========

Exellent new transfer for the film. Sadly, the "Backstage Disney" featurette on the making of the movie is severely lacking. I mean, years ago, the Aladdin documentary ran almost 2 hours, and was full of a lot of trivia and conversations with almost all the voice actors. The Little Mermaid's documentary runs a scant 45 minutes. Interesting, but I wanted (and felt deserved) more from a Platinum Edition. It also doesn't help that there's very little about the making of the actual film on it - it's mostly about how The Little Mermaid basically saved Disney's animation department.

I'm glad to see that although Fantasia 2006 was abruptly cancelled by the studio, they were able to release the already-completed short on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Match Girl with this set. And a warning to those with emotionally fragile children: Unlike what they did with Mermaid, Disney did not alter the story's bittersweet ending. I was amazed at how they effectively came up with an excellent tearjerker in just 7-minutes.

Disney Magic.  :)

P.S. - On the Disc 2 Easter Egg, the Pinoy animator of Ursula is prominently featured, as is the live action actress they used to animate Ariel. It's quite easy to find. From the "Treasures Untold: The Making of The Little Mermaid" menu, highlight "Act IV: Setting Sail" then hit right on your remote control. A hidden pipe will be highlighted. Click it to access the short animation featurettes mentioned.

thanks for the insights, currently i'm still trying to decide whether to buy the R1 or wait and hope for an R3-to-be-released-then-go-on-sale as what usually happens especially with the Cinderella.  as i've mentioned before i don't mind getting an R3 after all the price drop is worth the wait but that is IF there will be an R3 counterpart.  ::) ??? ::)

I don't think so, it's Number one at Amazon.com since it's release...Amazon probably just matching other discounters... or using it as a loss-leader, in the hope that buyer will come back and buy other  titles...

Often times, the biggest titles are not the most profitable, If at all.  Harry Potter books were also slashed 50% at launch, and free priority shipping pa.

All reviews are very positive (so far), unlike the Fox and The Hound 25th Anniversary Edition.

And the fact that R1 is limited, means collectibility sometime down the road, but probably too many copies in the market for another year or so...

Yes, I think Amazon.com is just trying to lure customers from the big DVD retailers, like Wal-Mart which usually sells DVDs at low prices on the first week of release.  I got "The Little Mermaid" at Wal-Mart for just $13.72.

No surprise there. A lot of people consider this as Disney's Modern Age classic. At par with the studios most well-loved features.

Now to the DVD, I noticed some pixellation in the underwater scenes but still an improvement from the Limited Issue transfer. The features are the real catch here. Still enjoyed the movie...now waiting mode for the next PE. ;D
