need solicited advice suggestions recommendation sa tube rolling
anybody got info (sonic signature?) /user experience on the following preamp tubes?

1. DUMONT (usa) 5814a - nos
2. HEWLETT PACKARD made by Sylvania (usa) 5814a - nos
3. Philips ecg 5963 (dec.1982)

available @ spin electronics tel#s531-2029 ; 717-0947 to 48 * price=275php/tube
#64 kanlaon street,mandaluyong city near shaw mrt station (side na papunta makati) & at the back of richville hotel-

appreciate your replies :)

PS: for me a sylvania 5814 is sweet sounding...try also an RCA 5963 blackplate triple mica, very detailed...thanks! :D

yes i got rca 5963 blackplates from spin electronics kangina.
dami pa stock hp by sylvania, dumont at philips ecg nos. malapit sa MRT station@shaw blvd. (#64 kanlaon st. mandaluyong ct) baka may kilala ka malapit doon.

"DuMont" branded 5814a is most likely Sylvania as well.

read that some tv,computer companies contracted sylvania rca ge etc to make tubes for their exclusive use. tinatakan lang nila ng silkscreen like the HP - hewlett packard made by sylvania usa. ayos yun- double quality control! ;D

baba production cost? bakit taas ba? yun friend mo from binondo gumagawa ng mas mura preamp diba? (hint... hint...) sa evangelista Php100 lang ganyan sir - ayan sharing info lang din - sugod na!

di ko alam going rates now,pakiusap lang yung tube preamp ko (wala kasi ako budget). :)
i've had my fill (of tubes) thats enough for the customary tube-rolling.
let the others benefit. thats also part of this hobby di ba?

but credit should go to a simple young-at-heart guy who whispered into my ears, just like my barber would when giving me the latest gossip around while massaging my neck with berum tonic. :) he recalled the good old days of pnoy audio that somewhere out there in old san juan used to exist a certain crystal semiconductors (and a certain orion elec. @taft/baclaran area now). sayang latak na lang ang audio tubes coz a few months ago, some "moneyed" guys pacquiaoed the tubes. i believe narinig din nung nakasabay ko names that were mentioned ;D

you should reorient me with the secret goodtime places around chinatown. wala na un champion at coronet eh.

i believe there are audiophiles out there, esp. newbies who may wanna experience the "tube sound" but may be hesitant (like me) coz aside from having limited or no knowledge of valve amplification/pre; they also dont know where to buy relatively cheap tubes. same with those budding diy guys & vintage guys looking for cheap spare parts.

as you have commendably done, you've made "tube sound' affordable to the music lovers. you've reached out and touched the lives of many who are now enjoying the sweet sound of tubes in their homes. you have curved your niche in the pinoy audio scene and jd labs would long be remembered by the next generation of pinoy audiophiles.

Well, call it what you like, you are still one hell of a persuasive guy. From t-amp casing to tube preamp, you probably have the talent a running politician should have - the power to convince. ;)

It's true that there are a lot of new guys around, the good thing is that they are lucky to have someone like you pointing them in the right direction. I remember when I first posted a question on a local forum asking where to get parts etc... not one, not even one replied with a straight answer. :o that was a very frustrating moment indeed so I took all my intelligence capabilities in an effort to find where is where. Then lo and behold this bigshot audio guy slapped me in the head and said, if you want to know a secret you must pose as if you can keep a secret. You can't run around telling this and that like a (as you mentioned) barber with the latest gossip for this can bring down the local industry (I asked why, he didn't answered). We are already struggling with the competition from china made gears and these other guy who are selling them dirt cheap. Instead of lowering and beating everyone's prices, pagalingan na lang tayo - magpagandahan ng gawa, after he said that he scribbled on a small paper and gave it to me then he said. You don't want to be responsible for bringing down the industry right? It's now up to you if you want to be a part of the solution or a part of the problem.

That was about four years ago, and I haven't seen that guy again.

what secret places? ::) try merchant hotel.

after having your r&r... from time to time in front of that hotel is a vendor with a "kariton" (he has to be mobile and haul ass anytime because of the cops) of surplus parts including 100 peso 6189 tubes - a 12au7 substitute. there, I said it again. darn it!

its 2006 everythings on the net & d chinese dragon has awaken.
everythings going chinese. whether their govt condones piracy (fakes); reality is just look around and its even featured in one local tv-show where those 168 goods come from.

sakit ng ulo maski mga hi-end audio players in europe and u.s lahat nakokopya. kaya yung ibang nagsa-subcontract sa china pinababalik muna nila sa states para palitan ng tamang piyesa na ayaw nila pakopya/paalam sa chinese oem.

yes yes, that's the one.

everything is going chinese because it's cheap, not because of the dragon or whatever. in fairness, I really liked those silky-white skin tones chinese women have. oh well.

took me a while to understand it but it's really a business thingy. if you want in and know their secrets you have to think like they do, and that's why you won't understand. heck, you even question HIS interests, you know why? because like many, you are an end-user/consumer who wanted to stretch the power of the peso, and so, goes to great lengths to find and share this wonders.

OT:

A man's car broke down in the middle of the night. and so he finds a mechanic and asks him to look at his car. The mechanic said "What seems to be the problem?", the guy replied, "It just won't start, I checked everything from the battery to the gas etc.".

And so the mechanic stoppped for a while and thinks... and then tooks out a screwdriver and fiddles with the carb and said "OK, try it now".

To this guy's relief, his car started now and so asked the mechanic "How much do I owe you buddy?", the mechanic said "Oh that would be Php2K.", the guy so surprised said "What?!? You only used a screwdriver, you didn't even bought any spare part and now your asking two thousand bucks?!".

Moral of the story? Just read between the lines. ;D

aint no ralphnader but its the consumer vs. bizness perspective of things.
sa hirap ng buhay ngaun, many of us just really wana stretch d buck. kung may mura why not? yes quality sometimes, oftentimes suffer.

want to stretch it further? then go directly to the source like you are doing and build it yourself. but when you do, you may want to wear a Kevlar body armor.

it doesn't take a ralph nader to figure it out if you are in the business perspective of things.

a local pharmaceutical excecutive once told me... consumers are much like businessmen, most of the time they are selfish and only think about themselves. politicians on the other hand thinks with great effort on how to impose tax on both businessmen and consumers.

most audio consumers wanted to go tubes but the problem is they don't know how - when in fact the question they should be asking is not how, but why.

consumers hard-earned mullah yun eh. wonder why despite not really being accessible and security friendly, people still go to divisoria?

sa "firstworld-country" as in u.s. mahigpit sila sa intellectual property rights and they protect it zealously but sa "thirdworld-country"like us? hohoho dbdbdbd all over ;D

people have their own reasons why they chose ss or tubes. whatever it is, i respect their decision, i leave it at that. i believe that you yourself were an ss/ gainclone guy not too long ago. di ba? so, why switch to valves? ;D

kung natuwa man sa akin ang may-ari ng spin elec. eh latak na lang yun, may nauna na pumacquiao ng mga audio-related tubes nila.

siguro mas masaya yung mangilan-ngilang pinoydvd members (kung meron man) na merong 12au7-based amps/preamp, nag-benefit sa simpleng post ko-though it was not really intended that way. naghahanap lang ako ng feedback sa tatlong tube brands/model. imagine NOS tube at 275pesos@. tube-roll na!

regarding info sharing here or in other forums. i believe some of our esteemed members, have time and again shared sources esp. in the diy- where to buy this where this service is available etc. wala silang vested interest kundi makatulong sa kapwa. di nila hangad na kornerin ang merkado. everybody happy.

i remember that there was someone in another forum? that mentioned a stash of tubes that existed in a small junkshop-like store owned by a chinese. he even gave the location and added that the owner said that he has more tubes at his home. whether that info was true or not, i dont know. or who benefited from that info, maybe some people made (lots of) money out of it. but walang industriang bumagsak !!! ;D ;D ;D

to some, it may seem somebody rang the alarm bells. for me, no big deal. its much ado about nothing ;D

I don't know how you are reading it (too literally maybe) but just remember, I did warned you. Why? Because I was in your place not too long ago, and I wished I had a Kevlar on. ;)

Oh well, this is all blah-blah-blah, much of it doesn't make any sense anyway, or is it just that people don't want to get the sense out of it.

On a more personnal note, what a meant by source, was your actual source of tubes and parts - not RCA, Sylvannia, etc. I am not an insane person to point you in that direction, although there is maybe an insane person who would think of that.

you can use some of the following in place of your 12AU7.

6189
5963
5814
6680
ECC82

some say that 6067 and CV491 can also be used, however I haven't done that personally.

6189 for 100?
Sayang. I bought mine new in box several times that amount. Nagmadali kasi ako. Baliktad nangyari sakin.
At the time, namili ako ng namili ng tubes for my AMX then and for future projects na iniisip ko nuon.

yeah same price....bro. mejo malayo ako baka may mga tropa ka malapit sa shaw blvd mrt/ shang/starmall etc. 12au7a cleartop tube with side-getter (yung silver nasa tabi)..most of the tubes wala na label/mark but one or two tubes i saw clearly labelled - honeywell u.s.a. - m not sure if its minneapolis u.s.a.

if you search net- "honeywell 12au7a", baka rca din gumawa? kasi hindi naman holland sayang amperex sana tumotorotot?! ;D

those familiar with Foreplay's topology will understand what i mean. only this time the cathode follower is replaced with a mosfet source follower.

for B+ the 2nd traffo will be wired back to back and the 220volt ct used as a full wave rectifier, uf4003 is useful here, for a B+ of around 150volts which is ample.

yes, something simmilar, but what i have in mind is a dc coupled one, no coupling capacitor between plate of 12au7 and gate of mosfet, just a 220ohm gate stopper, and 2 5.1v 1/2 watt zener back to back to serve as gate protection for mosfet. there will be just one output coupling cap......

cost of this project will be in the vicinity of P1000.... ;D

yup, if you use "raon" parts ;D

here is a scheme i whipped up just now...

the irf820 is operated with a drain current of ~5mA instead of 1.6mA of the 12au7cathode follower, it will be dissipating around 600mW so no heatsink is required. i put a 470k grid leak resistor for input triode to serve as protection in case of worn out volume control, this may be ommited if you wish.

yup, madali lang, very simple ang scheme and very simple ang parts....please reffer to earlier posts regarding parts...most of the parts can be purchased from golden mars in raon, that is in front of deeco...

this is just a preamp, or buffer if you will, gain is around unity.....the power transformer is 2 x 750mA ones and wired back to back, power consumption of this preamp is so low that you may do away with the power switch and leave the unit on all the time, but please do not ommit the fuse.

so that's why you use the 820, so you can also use the tube supply as mosfet supply too. that's what I use for my headamp with an opamp frontend, then may ccs yun mosfet and running in class a. galing yan ganyan design.

truth is, tube rolling results dpende sa circuit/preamp may iba tube users sa mga forums say ok rca cleartops meron iba sabi hindi daw nag"match" sa gears nila. good luck sana mag-improve sound at tiptop tono preamp mo.....soooon! :)

ako, i'm saving my OD3s and OC3s for a really nice cool project. Yung maliwanag ba... Naisip ko eh 10Y na Thoriated Tungsten kasi I have 3 pairs of those, tapos naka CCS shunt regulator using OD3/OC3 whatever. Sana may Mercury Vapor din na rectifier, kaso takot ako! Bwahahahaha!

My observation:

Cleartops is a bit more refined thatn Sylvania. Very sweet sounding.

But Sylvania had better bass and highs, but can be harsh sometimes.

Thanks to you guys I was still able to scrounge for a pair of unbranded 12au7 cleartop and a pair of Tung Sol branded 12au7 (from the leftovers of those who've already been there). ;D Tried the clear top last night with my Tono preamp and I must say I like the sound of this better than the Tono's stock tubes especially on vocals. It has a warm, sweet, clear, and very relaxing sound. It has no harshness even at loud volume. Now, I have to try out those Tung Sols tonight. ;D Again, thank you guys ;)

panabla sa malas :( ;D...greyplate lang not blackplate..pwede na maski isa lang at yung kapares blackplate both au7 - mulato baga....all others 4 u seems ok. :)

kagaya natin lagi naliligaw (ng landas sa bulkang kanlaon)..buti di sa mayon, tigok tayo sa glowing lava...dito tayo sa glow ni ate spin glow ;D

kasi loose tubes yung mullard na andun at last pair pa...hinanap ko pa yung kapares.... and iba ang print, hindi mullard kaya siguro iniisnab ng mga buyers, pero kung kilala mo ang Mullard physically, a good close watch on the tube will confirm it is a Mullard. Masaya na siyang nakakabit sa preamp ko, lovely paired with another pair of 12at7 Mullard on the monoblocks....masaya na silang magkapamilya! ;D

re: caps- no they are not the same. the eleshop caps' predominant color is Red, lettering is gold/yellow, and there's no Mcap printed. the 1uf400v cap is slimmer but a bit longer. both lack the "made in germany" mark, rite? other than that same "audiophiler mkp kondensator" etc na. ung 10uf 400v cap diameter size parang 5peso coin ang lake

hi matz, i saw sa post mo ng bada cdp specs na may gamit 6922 tube. if im not mistaken 6922=6dj8 .

just been there today, halos ubos na ang cleartops, may nanggigil yata last friday daw & got 24pcs etc...nawala (di ko nakita) na rin yung 95pcs. nos nib janphilips ecg12at7wc at no more philips5963 nos nib, nomor dumont5963, nomor hewlettpackard by sylvania5963 & sylvania5963 nos nib1969, nomor ge5751 5stars.

natira yung nos sylvania5751 at ge5751 at konting 12au7s/5963s.(nag-iwan ako raytheon blackplate*, sawa na sa itim :))

Hi,

you do not replace a 5751 with a 12au7 or vice versa - magkaiba electrical characteristics niyan. 5751 for a 12ax7, puede, but not a 12ax7 for a 5751.

grabe yung red caps audiophiler, naubos agad ang kalahati nung supot ng 2.2uf! ang ganda pala ng porma nung caps na yun sa totoong buhay! ;D keep me posted how it sounded on your project. tulo-laway ako sa dami ng Allen Bradley resistors!

pati yung pagawaan ng murang amp chassis sa Soler St., nakita ko na din.. sa Tip Top Store at yung almost across na store called Chun Ying ba yun. ... for directions, just ask the ever generous Oweidah here. Ang mura lang palang magpagawa ng kaha! Sugod na mga katoto!

Can't forget meeting Andrew Yap... with a NOS NIB JAN 211 and GEC KT66 tubes just lying around in his house! ;D This man is really worth meeting... also generous in sharing with you his sources and knowledge in tube. i love that Macintosh tube amp! akin na lang! ;D

re: diy chassis...ok pagawa sa soler kung maramihan at mapipili mo materials, kapal (gage) shape,specs etc. pero kung pa-isa-isa eh time/effort consuming- bili ng metal/aluminum sheet then pa process- bend, form drill holes, screws etc then have it powdercoat painted.

for now i prefer using decibez chassis (450php@) ganda powdercoated paint yata. ok for use with small tubes (12ax au7 at7 /6dj8) kasi medyo manipis decibez chassis. pwede ala-foreplay or tube buffer diy.

eleshop has unpainted chassis @350php mas makapal ok for 6sn7 or 12sn7 octal tubes na kailangan ng konti pressure when inserting and pulling out of the socket. spray paint pwede na

Oweidah and i went to raon last monday and yes, we dropped by Southern Electronics. That is the store i am referring to that i failed to locate...daming tubo.

Oweidah is right, you can buy bradley resistors at Eleshop along ronquillo st., dami pa but all half watt and mind you, at P5.00 each only!!! Watson has but in very very limited values at P10.00 each!!! geez.... i have extras here that you might want to buy> Riken RMG 2 pcs 680 ohms 1 watt, Riken RMA 4 pcs 51k 1 watt, Allen Bradley 4 pcs 12ohms 1 watt.

yeah nice guy that mr.trinidad and his son, rite?.....sa hilera ng globe lumpia at globe electronics got a heathkit tube am/fmtuner sa kanya but had to give it up coz nag-di-drift stations. its good he's in good health, ang bait ng matandang yan.

the other day just been to southern radio with fellow member new_age. (binalikan mo ba sir new_age si black mamba?) ;D

Are those really certified Allen Bradley? I've been to eleshop several times and I've seen those resistors but they're packed in invidual small bags and no label. Baka kasi Xicon carbon comps yan. ;)

saan nga ulit yung pagawaan ng chassis? i used to buy aluminum plates 4 x 8 ft from sulimco and have them delivered to Pio's sheet metal shop across the street to have them cut and bent, now he has tig welding..... ;D

sa soler st. behind arranque market, may 2 metal shops - tip top at chun ying? you're rite, we have to buy the metal sheets the have it processed by those shops.

now we go into the economics of the tube (nos) industry. being the newbie here, akala ko nos tubes prices @spin electronics ay regular/normal lang. nagulat ako nang makita sa e-bay etc ang pricing ng nos tubes. so if you do the math, 1+1, kaya pala latak na lang ang inabutan at napacquiao na.

sa pa-diy naman, parang namamalengke, basta alam mo ang bibilhan ng mga rekado (parts) medyo makakatipid at makaka-buo ka, (in my case) tube preamp using premium parts and simple chassis. hindi japorms pero ok tumunog. ang solusyon ko ay ambilyts ;D, mas nakaka-concentrate sa pakikinig ng good muzika kesa hangaan ang audio gear. ;D

just as i thought! akala ko meron kayong nadiskubreng bago, anyways, i buy my aluminum from Sulimco metals, the now swhop owner Tony is very easy to deal with, madaling kausap. i go to the sheet metal shop acrross the street becasue they have box bender and can make better looking chassis at reasonable costs. ;D

isama na rin natin itong thread na ito for diy'ers looking for parts. ;D

Speaking of information, did you know that you can actually get free samples of this component/part from electronic manufacturers. A few years ago Analog Devices actually gave free samples of their op-amps. It seems people could not get too much of a good thing ... Unfortunately, in the Philippines this offer is no longer true :-[ napasobra paghingi ...

Kung hihingi naman huwag sobra sobra. I share ang mga results para hindi na ulit-ulitin pa ang testing - exception to those applying for patents. Try googling the sites of other manufacturers eg Maxim, National Semiconductor etc

congrats sir devo sa ukay-ukay 5751s mo. nakakalito nga ang sylvania at ge5751 all the while i thought napili ko sylvania eh ge pala. may extra support rod yung GE at medyo mataba o magaspang sa hawakan kasi ung tatak nya seems angat ng konti pero pareho silang green print.
nung nagkasabay kami kasi ni buzzliteyear sa spin, di namin alam kung paano tumingin ng triple mica plates so yung makapal ang plates hiniwalay namin. i got the ge5751 & he got the sylvania5751 (meron ka pa tayo nakitang itim, di ba buzz ;D)

of german origin daw yung orig na may ari ng crystal semiconductors (now spin electronics)

kasi makinis parang brandnew cleartops pati underside at pins ang puti maski walang tatak at walang box.

loose/unboxed tubes were left sa counter kasi napagod na sa kabababa :)

Uhum. Before ganyan din ako before I got married. Medyo nahilig and i used to own some of them and I used to have a PTC since I was assigned to some parts of Visayas and Mindanao and travel alone most of the time.

Everytime i leave the house eh si Mother umiiyak na hehehe.

But after I got married eh I disposed all of them at walang natira baka kasi sa kin magamit ni Commander in Chief. ;D

Haaaay.. I miss the smell of the gunpowder and the recoil of a Dessert Eagle nyahahaha.

high cap pala yung STI mo cool!!! pero for me masmaganda yan Goldcup mo. maganda ang grip niyan kahit 9 loader lang. pede naman magkaroon ng option yan for hi-cap frame yan eh. pede rin polymer...

yup, natural pointer yun goldcup, upgraded na yan grip to packmayr grips, ambidextrous safety and high ride beavertail. meron ako chip mccormick mag 11 stacker, pwede na din if you are not into blind shots. match grade din parang vacuum tubes.

btw, may napili ka ng tube amp sa AMX?

ayaw ko yan compensator, masyado maingay eh, kaya ko naman recoil. ;D meron stabiliser yun goldcup and chip maccormick magwell and of course lightened trigger, pati barrel ramp throated na for those wadcutters and jacketed hollow points. pero lahat yan nandun din sa sti eh. ;D ;D ;D

mahal ang tube amp compared to pier ss amps, for pushpull designs sa AMX ang pinakamura yet aprub ang tunog. pero syempre oks din sa pier, a little bit of luck and patience is all you need. sayang at wala pa yun marketplace natin dito, madami ka din pagpipilian dun bro.

there are available slides na front sloted or perforated, acts as a compesator. para hindi masyado mahaba hehehe! pero ganda talaga ng Goldcup isa yan sa gusto kong noon, also springfield. ganda yan magwell for speed loading pag nasa combat shooting. yung dito sa 1911 ko and pinalitan ko lang yung speed trigger yun lang hehehe! im just using armscor FMJ mahal kasi yung jacketed hollow points i remembered using those, bumubulaklak! pag tumama hehehe! saka wad cutters na good for target shooting. hay! those were the days, too bad my PTC has expired ang im no longer a gun club member wala na din kasi yun sequires bingham shooting range sa edsa kaya eto for home use nalang...

Anyways, im looking for a vacant sched this week para maka bisita sa Pier, para makita ko kung worth it pa ba yun mga surplus amp sa Pier. dati kasi magaganda pa yung mga units nila, lalo na yung mga power amps. now a days hindi na ako nakaka bisita i remeber nung naka bili pa ako ng LoD power amps HMA models mosfets. I think nasa 100W/pc kasi ang rated watts sa likod is 200W power consumption. ang ganda ng tunog kaya lang nasira dahil sa kalokohan ko noon hehehe!. ive loaded it with 2 woofers on each channel so bumaba siya ng 4 ohms ayun fried and pyesa, pero nung pinatingin ko sabi sakin nung technician hindi naman daw sira yung mga power trasistors, pero pinamigay ko na rin. hehehe! now eto na naman ako seeking another japanese surplus amps ang ganda rin kasi nung mga features vintage amps na nasa niji site, kaya i made an option na pag hindi ko kaya ang tubes eto balik SS muna...

naku, bad experience ako sa short barrel, meron ako before Colt Officer na ang hirap gamitin. so fullsize 1911 pa din type gamit ko, proven ko na. ;)

hey, allow me to interrupt your gun-toting awhile and give some updates. yesterday i was down at SPIN Electronics and the 12au7's are down to the last 15 or so.. so grab them while you still can...btw. the 12au7's can also be had at Pacific Electronics for 250 a pop, these are the japanese tubes... ;D

yup iba pa rin yung orig na 1911 lalo na yung 9" slide....

btw been to pier yesterday, saw Sony ES series, Sansui 607 and 607F, Trio, and LoD.... guess what, finally saw 2 units of Dolbydigital / DTS receiver, kaya lang medyo pricey pa siya. Pioneer D series forgot the model priced at 9k and Yamaha HTR 595a priced at 10k, pero I think negotiable po kasi matumal ang bentahan kahapon pero ang daming nag kalat na kevlar speakers from Onkyo bookshefs (90db) to floorstanders bagong dating daw...

sony 333ES, pero hindi siya sa little chattys, nasa loob siya ng Pier shopping center sa bukana lang ang mga katabi niyang shop sa loob mga surplus TV's. actually dalawa lang silang nag titinda ng mga surplus amps dun sa loob si manang saka yung lalaki. madami silang naka tago na surplus amps dun.

Had all my tubes tested at Phasetron. All pairs matched, except for one pair which had a slight deviation. The 5751 Sylvania pair double mica round getter grey plate had readings of 60 and 72 respectively. Noel of Audio Amp said that this deviation is acceptable.

Kaya eto .... now using the Blackplates and Cleartops i bought. Happy Spin Customer! ;D

congrats sir eestrera! just in time buti may naabutan ka pa. di bale, ok naman ang mga nabili mo- darkhorse underated tubes na di pahuhuli sa best of 'em. just be patient let it burn-in and blend with your gears, after a few days / hours its rough edges will smoothen and reveal the beauty of the beast ;D

You can download the Glass audio 12au7 pre-amp circuit. The power tranny can be easily fabricated, and all the parts are available. When I built mine years ago, it cost me roughly P 3,000 pesos.

I might be able to collect a preamp kit for you, I have sources for most parts for a tube preamp.

The big question is, what tube and what circuit topology would you want to build?

On a tight budget.

How much would it cost to build a DIY tube pre-amp?
Kung may kasamang pre-out?

Will be use to pair with a BADA power amp and B&W bookshelf speakers.
Music like audiophile voices are the ones to be played.

Including tubes, I don't think you will spend more than 12K on a foreplay inspired preamp (this will be using good quality parts).

Now, if you start using boutique parts such as "audiophile" labeled capacitors, then it will get quite expensive. ;)
