Title: Endrik's Audio and HT
Post by: endrik35 on Dec 17, 2012 at 08:17 PM: After being a member since 2009, I think it's about time to post my audio and HT system.

My preamp and power amp in my main audio sytem took a well needed rest after I was able to get my AMX KT88 monoblocks from Mang Andrew this afternoon. In lieu of the Melos hybrid preamp and Muse model 100 power amp, my DIY Pass B1 with Salas shunt preamp is now paired to my AMX KT88 monos driving a pair of Sonus Faber Signums. The KT88's gives ample bass. . .that I have to turn off my sub when listening to 2 ch music. . .Thanks Mang Andrew! :D

My digital source is a Consonance Reference 2.2 tubed cd player with upgraded Mundorf supreme caps. Analogue source consists of a Rega P3-24 with Michael Lim upgrades, A TAS Lenco L75 turntable in Gemelina plinth using a Midas bodied Denon 103R cartridge. Tape deck consists of a vintage Teac V900X 3head casette deck and an ultra vintage Revox G36 tubed Open reel tape deck.

I only have a single sub which is a sealed type Rel Strata 3 used for audio and HT purposes.
I'm not much into HT so my HT setup is very simple which consist of a Samsung DVD player, Egreat R200, Sony Playstation 3 for game and bluray and a Nintendo Wii. Main front speaker is an NHT SB3 sealed bookshelf, center and rear speakers are all Mission's. These are all powered by a Harman Kardon AVR 355 receiver with Ipod dock :)

Had 4 wooden side panels fabricated out of mahogany for the traffo casing. Just used wood wax with no varnish. Anyway, i think it improved the aesthetics of the Duettos:)

Idol talaga . . . former AMX user myself. Switched to solid state kasi gastos ng tube replacement and tube rolling . . . ginagamit ko kasi for HT and stereo . .

Looks like you have Electroharmonix KT88 tubes . . . try using the SED 6550/KT88 or the Gold Lion KT88s. Mas punchy yung bass . . . better music all round. Adik ako dati sa www.tubedepot.com and sa website ni Jim McShane.

Thanks Brader JJ and Defcon. the Nakamichi is still working flawlessly after 20+ years. Problem is with the Teac. It lights up pero ayaw ng mag play. Pakibulong na lang po kung san tech ko dadalhin. Sayang kase, 3 heads yung Teac at maganda rin pong tumunog:)

Ngayon lang ako naenganyo kase kung tutuusin, puro vintage gamit ko Nelson, hindi naman talaga high end. I find the people here at pdvd easy to deal with at masayang community eto:-)

Thanks Timi, you don't need high end gears to be happy. Matching lang talaga. Like the Sonus Fabers, match made in heaven with KT88' power amps. Use a more malambing tube and sobrang mellow na, parang marshmallow. :-)
@Dodie, didiretso na lang ako kay Elmer para di na kita maistorbo. Tutal, madalas ako sa eastwood kase malapit lang samen:-) that is kung OK lang kay Elms:-)

First, use Bitumen(Dynamat or Flashband) to dampen your plinth. . . I placed the bitumen accdg to the recommendation in Vinyl Engine. . .

Then I ordered an aluminum subplatter from Michael Lim of Malaysia :)

Then ordered a double pulley, pulley puller and dual silicone belt (still from Michael Lim)

Decided to remove the old pulley and replace it with the double pulley. . .

Removed the motor cover and gently disassembled the motor from the plinth(which is connected only by a double-sided tape) using screw driver

Positioned the pulley puller and removed the old pulley

Installed the new pulley and removed the old double adhesive and replaced it with a 3m, reattach it back to the plinth and placed Flashband on the motor cavity to further dampen it. . .

@Dodie, the Rega RB300 and it's later iterations, ie., 301 up is an iconic tonearm. Good sounding na siya and it's weakness is in the bearing. Just replace the tonearm wires with Cardas Litz and you can dampen the tonearm by injecting silicone foam sa barrel:-)

kasali din sa tweak ung wooden cone mo sir Obet. I used 2 different materials as footers, yung metal at wooden cones mo with blutack na pang sandwich. . .:)

Hi Derick, Thanks. Just buy a Zebra 13.8V regulated PSU(parang pyramid psu na naoorder sa Amazon). May konting mods lang inside, resistors I think(not so sure) para tumahimik and your good to go. Pangit kase PSU ng VDAC2. Bulingit! :)

Hi doc! Di ko ito nabasa. I dunno which is heavier though mabigat din talaga ang MDF. If You can get hold of kamagong, very heavy and dense yun. Plus, maganda ang finish ng real wood sa house mo.

May I answer?
Mdf is more dense than common wood that it shouldn't be much of a factor in your rack. The bigger concern should be in the build quality. If you move your rack sideways do you see it swaying or creaking? Next, is your rack shelves bowing bec of weight or the rack capacity exceeded?
A wooden rack definitely looks good but not all wooden rack would perform the same... Consideration in material, joinery, quality and design would be factors to know and understand.

Thanks bossing. The best material would be real felt made from sheep's wool. May kamahalan lang. Cotton felt ginamit ko, may kalambutan so epektib din. Don't buy the synthetic ones na matigas:-)

I was able to retain Roy Gandy's concept of a light plinth(since both braces were lightweight. The plinth is very rigid right now due to the braces and is kinda impervious to vibrations. My next and last upgrade will be the motor isolation support wherein the motor will be completely detached from the plinth. . .

Thanks brader Mon and Fr. Jim. Sarap lang itweak ng Rega kase you can improve it's sa performance kung san siya mahina. Was planning on a heavy and thick plinth para sa Rega kaso hindi na siya magmumukhang Rega. So top and bottom bracing did strengthen the plinth and at the same time maintained the "lightweight"look of Rega tt's. Pero saludo ako sa Rega pagdating sa PRAT. Just like the Technics SL-1200 na tweakable din and one tweak is palitan mo lang ng Rega RB-250/300 tonearm eh mas gaganda pa tunog. . .DIY and tweaking makes audio fun and wholesome:)

Well, I'll be damned, I got tighter and cleaner bass that I'm not using my Rel sub for vinyl playback anymore. I know that most of you are skeptical about the beaks and most people claim that this has a "snake oil" effect but in my turntable, the "beaks" has a noticeable effect!

"I think the dual belt arrangement should help with the belt stretch problem associated with single rubber belts.

Blue Tak might be a solution, maybe the felt serves as a helpful isolation, especially with the motor now in a heavier pod resting on the shelf below the TT. And there's the rub- if the motor isnt "coupling" with the pod and exacerbating resonance it's cool. But if it just moves around the frequency of the resonance it might not be productive ( I know this from a few mass based experiments in the past). The real issue is: does the motor resonance excite the shelf, and does that return back up into the TT sitting on that same shelf? That could easily be worse than the stock setup if the shelf was easily excited at the motor resonance, you may need to change plinth feet again with possible further improvements to gain! Something to consider in any case, as us old scudder a have figured out through years of tweaks- any time you make even one change, you have to reconsider the entire system and it's thousand variables. Cables or speaker location/spikes could now yield huge improvements for example. Wow, I leaked OT.

I would tend to think these solutions are most helpful with the stock plinth, which is probably the next design compromise to be addressed on that TT. But if you do that, it's not the cool yellow... and there's a point at which other turntable components would be better anyway.

I think this is a good point to stop, having wrung out about as much performance (within reason) as is prudent.

well, here's the catch, a Canadian feller was able to address this concern and borrowing his ideas I came up with this :D
I was able to separate the turntable platform from the motor by making a square hole on the acrylic where the motor isolation base passes through which in turn seats on the lower bamboo platform. The footer I used to separate the acrylic from the bamboo base is a mixture of rubber cork, acrylic, dynamat ebony puck and small pieces of 3m bumpons. Here's some pics:

Bought a pair and it fits the top metal plate of my speaker stands perfectly. The top metal plate is covered with dynamat and I placed the silicon pad on top ;)

Remember the DIY mat I fabricated made up of corkl\ and rubber cork/ Panget kase laki ng butas sa gitna for the record label. Eto naisip ko. . .

*Notice the recessed middle part designed for the record label? What I did was cut a circular pattern on the middle part the same diameter as the record label, sanded it's bottom portion and replaced it back on the platter mat ;)

Eye candy yung cork mat Karl. Tumaas VTA ko which is about right kase nagdagdag ako metal brace. Yung sound? Much better than the stock Rega felt mat and a notch above my DIY rubber cork mat! Pure cork is better!:-)

Dodie, I'm using a benz micro mc gold for the Rega P3-24. Yung Lenco L-75 ang naka Denon DL-103R with Midas body:)
Karl, masyadong mabigat Denon DL-103 R for the rega tonearm though nag upgrade nako ng counterweight ;)

Based on the rp6 platter design with more weight on the periphery, the DIY bug caught me so I bought washers at ace hardware yesterday, glued 4 washers with steel epoxy, sanded and painted it flat black and attached it to the underside of the glass platter(8 pieces)via 3m double adhesives in a symmetrical fashion, equidistant from each other. Have a blessed weekend :D

Wala naman akong pera kasinglawak ni Mykel. Gustuhin ko man yung Devore Fidelity Gibbons 3XXL with that immaculate Bamboo baffle, wala akong ganung moolah!!!

Time to visit my neighbor Audio Amplified and look at some speakers. . .

Audi dito audi dun, walang kasing lambing at magical ni Signums. Lumo ako until I heard these tiny pair. . .

Tama! Lesser scale but same sonic signature:) I consider this a poor man's Harbeth! Parang bbc monitor:) tama lang to sa music room ko. Maliit lang kase. Medyo overpowering pa nga ang bass eh:):-)

At dahil din nasama yung Dynaudio sa walang kuwentang speaker, mas bagay pala siyang gawin ko na lang na speaker stand! ;)

Post by: endrik35 on Nov 05, 2013 at 11:30 PM: Just got the Sonic Frontier power amp from Kris Loo, very heavy and it almost broke my back, malaki siya so muntik ng di magkasya sa rack. Compared to my Kt-88 power amp, iba and tunog ng 6550-c, mas malambing siya tumunog. It was set to 8 ohms so di siya pwede sa xavians. Used my NHT SB3 na lang which is an acoustic suspension type(non-ported) pero kayang kaya parin ng SF amp. There's something special about non-ported speakers, accurate at tight ang bass niya, walang gapang. The NHT SB3's are bang for the buck speakers with luscious mids and tight bass :)

The DIY bug caught me this morning. Remember the DAC holder I did with the oblong narra plank and girl's black elastic headband?(first pic).Pangit! So what I did was too fashion out 2 wooden borders with a screw hole on the top middle with felt foam inserts sa medial side para di magasgas yung DAC. 2nd to 4th pics shows the finished project with felt pads for feet. Now that's more like it!:)

Tried to decide on getting another REL but I learned that their new stuff is now made in CHINA :( Not good. . . Visiting Frank de Witt of Wholesound, I saw this dimunitive sized sub, almost less than 11 in in cubic diameter and claiming to go down to 13hz(skeptical about that) but most important STILL made in UK. . .he he. So after some audition, (Neutrik speakon connectors one of the kickers for buying). . .I saved up some money and bought the MJ acoustics pro 50 mk3 sub the other day. Now this sub I must say is the "King"of budget subwoofers. ;) It is small, kicks ass, highly musical, faster and tighter bass then the RELS(imho) and easy to integrate. As of now, I think there is still 1 stock left at Wholesound(Ferdie Ludo already shipped his 2 remaining stocks to Frank) So go check it out, this may be the last sub you'll ever want. Of course I won't compare it to Rhytmik, it's like comparing apples to oranges but if you're more into music than HT, not much of a bass head and has a small to moderate sized music room, then this might be the RIGHT sub for you. :D Thanks Frank and Loloy and of course to Mykel for introducing me to Wholesound. :-*

Best compliment I can give upon auditioning Cal's speaker cables last night is that it's like putting your ears directly on the speaker outputs of your amp. It's that clean, detailed and transparent. Put a bad source and it will reveal it fully. Put in an excellent source and it will make you smile. . .Garbage in,. . .garbage out! :)

I have a Technics SL QL1 - transverse tracking TT. As I have a fairly largs collection of vinyl I may have to to upgrade.

Finally was able to buy a 1 meter 3/4 inch black heatshrink at Lyn's electronics at Cubao. The Achilles heel of the SL-1200 is it's tonearm. Either you put another tonearm( most are rega tonearms modified by Origin Live but you'll have to send your rb-250 or what have you to England) and the other option is either you put silicon O-rings around the tonearm or wrap the tonearm in heatshrink. . .I took the 2nd option and right now, I'm happy with the sonic benefits. . . Very cheap tweak, 21 pesos for the 1 meter heatshrink, a 20 pesos cricket lighter and a small piece of black electrical tape(20 pesos) to tidy up the ends. Then you need a VTF gauge to adjust the VTF and you're all done. Tweaking is such fun. . .

thanks brader Obet.1 meter yung 21 pesos pero dami pa tira. Around 6 in lang need mo for a 9 in tonearm. What do you mean by single or double cut?

Finally was able to buy a 1 meter 3/4 inch black heatshrink at Lyn's electronics at Cubao. The Achilles heel of the SL-1200 is it's tonearm. Either you put another tonearm( most are rega tonearms modified by Origin Live but you'll have to send your rb-250 or what have you to England) and the other option is either you put silicon O-rings around the tonearm or wrap the tonearm in heatshrink. . .I took the 2nd option and right now, I'm happy with the sonic benefits. . . Very cheap tweak, 21 pesos for the 1 meter heatshrink, a 20 pesos cricket lighter and a small piece of black electrical tape(20 pesos) to tidy up the ends. Then you need a VTF gauge to adjust the VTF and you're all done. Tweaking is such fun. . .

I saw one being sold here but the price is kinda stiff for me. A helpful soul, Jun(Quezon Hill) pm'ed me and said he has one and was willing ro sell it to me for 4k. Now that is the price I want and seems to be fair. Long story short, I went to Victory liner Cubao terminal to fetch it. Upon opening the box, I was surprised that it is in near mint condition considering it's age.Now I have an option to change the acoustics especially on poorly recorded cd's and Lp's. Would like to thank pdvd because without this forum and it's helpful members, the searching for an item would be more tedious especially for a much sought after equalizer like the GR-777 which was TOTL during it's time(1989-. . .)

Tried it na Ronald. Rubberized cork pa. Ok din at maganda sa stock rubber mat. Pero the origin live mat for the technics is the best mat I've tried so far. . .

Latest update, my tubed phono stage is already finished. Got it from Mang Andrew the other day. It's based on the design of a VTL phono stage by the late David Manley who Mang Andrew met in Hong Kong so many years ago and David was so kind enough to share his design and some notes too. :D I asked Mang Andrew to make it a dual mono design hence the 4 traffos you can see in one of the pics (separate power supply).
Will design the exterior so +Sneak Peek" muna tayo guys ;)

Bought Dymo yesterday for labeling and had a brass plate fabricated in honor of the late "David Manley". . .

Sound is detailed, sweet with very low hum(Probably because of the substantial PSU). It was a worthwhile build in my humble opinion. . .Thanks Mang Andrew! :)

This week i was given a box load of LP's mainly 80's music.Good thing I passed by sensible audio yesterday and saw this Marantz cd/md cm-6200 combination player with recorder. It was playing warm and detailed music. It has also cd text capability and more important eh mabilis magbasa ng pirated cd. Tinawaran ko si Raul and brought it home. May panlipat nako ng ibang lp's ko sa MD format. Thanks Raul! :D

thanks. My first cd player was a Marantz cd-84 bought way back in 1984. There's something about the Marantz sound na babalik balikan mo. . .

The smoother and shinier part of the cloth is in direct contact with the acrylic cover so it's essentially scratch proof. . . :D
