Title: Tonedeaf's HT/audio set up
Post by: tonedeaf on Sep 08, 2007 at 07:44 PM
I. Brief History

First set-up (no pics though):

I got started on HT in 2002, when I set out to buy a dvd player. I chanced upon pinoydvd, met SGT (the late Sonny Tuazon of Home Theater), and ended up with a Philips 25" flat CRT TV, a pioneer dvd player, the mission speakers and Onkyo 494 receiver described below.

Here's what I wrote in my blog about it:

It started with Diana Krall and the Bee Gees.

January, 2002.

I decided to buy a DVD player. After checking with the helpful folks at pinoydvd, I was introduced to a world where watching a movie at home was not just about turning on your tv, playing a disc and plopping down on your sofa with chips and soda within easy reach. It was all about experiencing the movie - seeing the images in the manner which the filmmakers envisioned, and being enveloped by the sound of it.

I scoured the metro for shops selling home theater systems and learned about speakers and amplifiers and wires. I also met a kind shopowner who loved Diana Krall's version of "Let's Face the Music and Dance" , and played it over and over, using different speakers and amps, just to demonstrate the nuances of each equipment. I'd never heard of Diana Krall before, and after one or two sessions with him, I went to a music store, got the album and played it on my cd player. It wasn't the same. I went back to his shop, and this time, he asked me to watch the dvd of the Bee Gees - One Night Only. I sat on his sofa, dreading the thought of listening to Night Fever and Tragedy, and found, to my chagrin, that I was tapping my feet in rhythm.

I ended up getting a bigger TV, an amplifier and front and center speakers (Mission M73 and the M7C1). On my wish list: a subwoofer and two rear speakers for 5.1 effect, and maybe a turntable.

Second set up:

September 2007: Got a Panasonic Viera 42pv70h from Theatre Works and got a new TV stand (Sabre Luna), but still had a 3 speaker set-up (Mission M73 as fronts, M7C1 as center). As I lived in a studio-type unit then, there wasn't a lot of space. Here's a pic:

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/hometheatersetup.jpg)

Upgrades over the years:

October 2007: Got the Mission M30i as surrounds

November 2007: Got a Toshiba HD-DVD player. However, by the time it arrived in the Philippines, bluray had won the format wars  :'(

September 2008: I finally got my subwoofer (Velodyne CHT-10R). Finally 5.1!

March 2009: After 6 months of procrastination, a WD TV HD Media player!

December 2009: The condo unit I purchased was finally turned over to me. Since the floor area, while bigger than my rented unit, is still limited, I just tried to ensure that my set-up would look a bit better. Good thing my contractor shared my interest in HT, and gave some suggestions.

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/HT%20set%20up/PICT0072.jpg)

March 2010: This is how it looked like, after all the work was done.  The Mission M73s are hidden in the cabinets, so is the sub (lower left hand corner).
Gears as of this time - Panasonic Viera 42PV70, Onkyo 494, Mission M73, M7C1, M30i, Pioneer DVD-266, Bada Line Conditioner

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/HT%20set%20up/HT-resized.jpg)

December 2010: I got an upscaling DVD player (Pioneer DV-420) to replace my oldie Pioneer DV-266.

January 2011: I got a PS3.
Also, I realized that if I upgrade my receiver in the future, it might not fit my shelves. So I had it redone a bit:

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/HT%20set%20up/PICT0005.jpg)

with the gears:

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/HT%20set%20up/PICT0011.jpg) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/megdegs_photos/media/HT%20set%20up/PICT0011.jpg.html)

February 2014: After 12 years, I got Denon 1713 to replace my Onkyo 494

My only criteria for choosing this particular model, was that it was being sold at just about 50% off, and specs-wise, is already an upgrade over my Onkyo 494 because it has HDMI :) Many thanks to Paul of Sound and Vision for the deal.

Humabol sa February 2014: Samsung 51F5000, to replace my trusty 7-year old Panasonic 42PV70. This one, from Abenson, and it's never ending Friday-Sunday promo of this model.

March 2014: I decided it was time to change my fronts/centers as well. After a few days of reading up on the brands/models which would fit my budget, and auditioning said models in various HT shops, I decided to get the Psb Image B6 + C5, thanks to Rex of Watts Hi Fi.

Also on March 2014: Some minor tweaks. Got a subwoofer riser and custom made center speaker stand.

And on the last day of March 2014, I got a NAD516BEE  after doing a home audition:

April 2014: Pioneer BDP-3220K (originally, Pioneer BDP-3120)

August 2014: Yaden 2000VA automatic voltage regulator, and for office set up: Fiio E18 Kunlun, audio technica ATH M50 headphone

September 2014: NAD DAC 1 Wireless USB

December 2014: Got a Chromecast as a Xmas gift  :)

February 2015: Rega RP3 + Rega Fono Mini A2D

Hi Sir!

Hi!  so far, i have no complaints. PQ is good, even on a regular dvd player. for cable tv viewing, it depends on the channel (cnn and bbc, for example, have great PQ, the local channels less so). it's hot! (literally) the manual is not so helpful. changing channels takes about 2 seconds.

i haven't tried to use it as a pc monitor. nor have i tried to use with a ps3,xbox or any hd dvd player.

i suggest you get one of them surge protectors or AVR or a line conditioner (like what i have). nakakanerbyos pag nag brown out and biglang nag on ulit. hahaha!

finally, check out the panasonic 42pv70h thread. there are other users there who can better help you out.

@audiojunkie,

thanks :)

@kt,

re break-in, i watch a lot of cable tv and just zoom. i just realized today (after 4 days)  that i only adjusted the settings for tv viewing. after watching bourne identity, i realized that the settings were dynamic, well above the mid-levels, contrary to the break-in instructions. hahaha!

re Mission M7s and Onkyos, i agree. thanks.

yes, center speaker nga. i'm going to have some kind of a glass enclosure made to separate the two. else, will move the center speaker up, same shelf as the tv, to the space in front.

Congrats, madam tonedeaf!  Great gear choices!

after watching bourne identity, i realized that the settings were dynamic, well above the mid-levels, contrary to the break-in instructions. hahaha!

Dynamic kasi ang default setting out of the box.

Here's what I wrote in my blog about it:

Good idea.  The player might be getting too much vibration from the center speaker.

Additional suggestion:  Try moving the front speakers forward.  Clearing the space between the two front speakers will improve imaging.

Do IBP Journal articles and papers count?  ;D

Anyway, thanks for the compliment. But no, I don't write professionally. I keep meaning to, but I don't think I write often enough. If you note from my blog, I write maybe 5 times a year. hehehe. our work doesn't allow for much free time.

One of these days, when I walk away from the profession, or at least take a step back to breathe again, I will.

I don't think I have as many boxsets as the folks here. hehehe. I like boxsets. I appreciate the time and effort spent by the makers of the film and the studio in releasing it. But all my collections are old. I haven't purchased a boxset in a while. Or dvds, for that matter.  I used to order a lot from Amazon, or had dvds shipped to friends who visit relatives in the states. and then i just stopped.

good thing i got that new tv. made me want to watch dvds again. now i want rear speakers and a turntable and all the dvds i missed out in buying. ;D

and yes, i'm one of the female members of pdvd. i hesitate to say 'lady', as it conjures up images of corsets and uncomfortable clothes  ;D

Ma'am (pala :D), Perfect view has a simple wood enclosure to isolate your DVDp from your center speaker. Another nice looking option is to wall mount your plasma and center speaker.

who (or what) is perfect view?  ;D

re wall mount, would love the option. kaso, i'm just renting my unit. my landlord forbids making holes in the walls. kaya no choice also on that matter.

Post by: MAtZTER on Sep 24, 2007 at 12:52 PM
You can find Perfect view in Ace hardware & True value.

The wood enclosure I was referring to basically encloses your DVDp in a wood frame, giving you space to place your center speaker on top of the DVDp. This way the DVDp is less prone to speaker vibrations.

Your boxsets are supposed to be old. Yet, a lot of them are still naka-plastic. D ka yata madalas manood.  ;D

i've watched all of the boxsets i have.

i do try,  however,  to keep the plastic cover intact when i first open the dvds. i use a cutter and just make a hole on the side where the dvds come out and leave the rest as is. hehe. i figure that might prolong its shelf life a little longer.

Oh wow! Akala ko pa naman that shelf life refers to pagkain lang ...  ;D

Let me see ... hula lang ako sa ibang habit mo:
1) Upuan ng kotse mo ay may plastic pa rin
2) Ang ganda ng fabric ng sofa mo pero may plastic or some other kind of cover
3) You very carefully open gifts, so that you can re-use the gift wrapper
4) Cellphone mo may original pa na plastic sa screen nya
5) And finally ... christmas tree mo ay naka-display na may plastic

Tama ba?   ;D  ;D

i'm just waiting for the speaker stands from AA.

may i just say that i feel fairly proud - i managed to connect the  speaker wires to the receiver and the speakers this evening. to put things in perspective, when i transferred houses about 3 years ago, i had the lipat-bahay gang transfer the receivers/fronts/center as is - without unplugging the interconnecting wires - as i was so scared i wouldn't know how to put everything back again.  ;D

now, sound is actually coming out from the rear speakers. hahaha! i'm so happy! even if i feel every ache in my body, from all the contortions i had to do just to figure out how to connect the wires to the receiver. i knew i should have gotten them banana plugs!

i managed to get optical fiber cable and speaker stands today.

after 5 years, my AVR was finally able to display the words dolby digital! yahoo! tomorrow, when i'm not so sleepy and tired from having to crouch down to figure out how to insert the optical fiber cable in the back of both the receiver and the dvd player, i will look for a dvd na dts naman. never paid much attention to it before. ang saya!

what's a sound meter?

my AVR has a "test tone" function, where you can indicate the volume level of each speaker. when i fiddled with it, the original settings had all speakers set to "0", though i can hear sound coming from them. what's this for?
Title: Re: My sort of complete HT set-up

@danrd andmb88,

thanks.  ;D

@5Speed,

i'm really looking for either the M7C2 or the M3C2 to improve my center speaker. Can't use the M7C1 as rear speakers though, because my AVR can only do 5.1 ;D

great, now i have to buy new center speakers AND a new receiver. walang katapusan!

seriously though, i'm choosing between getting a sub or a new receiver. i think they both will be in the same price range (between 20-30k). so i have to decide between having a 5.1 set-up (instead of my present 5.0) or upgrading my receiver.

I think it is more accurately called a "sound level meter." It measures the loudness of your audio. You need to balance the loudness of your speakers so that at your listening position, they are equally loud. This is very important.

The way you normally do it is to use the "test tone" function. Each speaker will alternately emit a tone and you measure this with your meter using "slow" and "weighted C" (I think!). You can adjust the volume of each speaker through your AVR. You have to adjust the volume of each until they are all equally loud (same decibel reading in your meter).

@danrd andmb88,

thanks.  ;D

@5Speed,

i'm really looking for either the M7C2 or the M3C2 to improve my center speaker.

Now that you got Digital connection bet DVD -> AVR, I suggest to get a Sub instead of new AVR, Coz you have't heared yet  the full pontential of your AVR in digital Audio.

Upgrading your receiver: 5.0 before upgrade; 5.0 pa rin after.  The improvement will be minimal.

Adding a subwoofer: The difference will be appreciable.

Low frequency effects give you the emotional impact that the director intended.  Setting the front speakers to "small" and using the correct crossover frequency will route lower frequencies to the subwoofer, leaving the front speakers with a lighter load.

A lighter load on the front speakers will allow them to produce clearer mid frequencies.  At the same time, your subwoofer will give you the low frequency extensions you've been missing for 5 years.

My advice: Get the subwoofer.  I guarantee that the sonic improvement will make you smile for days.  ;)

@barrister,

considering that my room is small (have a 46 square meter unit, with only maybe 20 sq. m. of it devoted to my bedroom/ht room), is it ok if i just get an 8" sub?

8" can be ok'ed with the size of your room but medyo kulang. try 10" to be more musical and  about 200 watts power... ;D

Panyera, mabibitin ka sa 8-incher.  Malaki ang 20 sq. m. para sa home theater.  Baka sabihin mo, "sana hindi na lang ako nag-sub kasi pareho rin pala ang tunog".  :(

OK lang sana ang 8" kung small room (not more than 12 sq. m.), pero kung around 20 sq. m., dapat 10" or 12" sub.

project long weekend: re-arrange set-up. put banana plugs. fix magulong wires.

i've decided to move my center speaker to the same level as the tv. jus so it won't sit on top of the dvd.

next, i moved my receiver to the 2nd level of the stand, so i won't have to crouch down and injure myself next time i think of unplugging the wires and cleaning it up. or when i connect my subwoofer cable (i wish  ;D). the dvd is now on the bottom portion of the stand.

then, i finally took a long look at the back of my receiver and unplugged the wires.
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/PICT0219.jpg)

had to put a code on each wire to remember which goes where  ;D

then i put banana plugs and voila!

@5speed,

yes, that's my next project.  however, i have learned that subwoofers cost a lot (the ones recommended to me are in the 20k++ range). so baka pang next year na yun. in the meantime, i'm enjoying DTS 5.0 and dolby 5.0 sound na rin. i can't believe i waited 5 years to complete my set up. i missed so much pala. it's so much fun watching movies with surround effects.

anyway,  my favorite, so far, of the movies i've watched na may surrounds is Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. ang galing!

ang laki din pala ng difference when i got the optical cable versus my old analog wires. yung T3, ang volume ko lang is in the 35-42 range. samantalang dati, i used to watch dvds na ang volume set to 55-60. tapos, you hear so much more detail  ;D  :)
Title: new discoveries
Post by: tonedeaf on Oct 13, 2007 at 10:50 PM
i discovered a few things today pala, while i was fiddling around with my set-up.

apparently, my dvd player's settings still identifies my tv as 4:3 (the settings i made when i still had a crt tv). so kanina, i changed the settings to 16:9. the strange thing is, when i did that, i was able to watch X2 with the full subtitles even when i picked the full screen viewing mode (as i'm still in burn-in period). kaso, when i watched Terminator 3, full screen ulit and with subtitles, only the first lines of the subtitles were visible. bummer. i'm still trying to figure  out what's wrong with my settings, or talagang subtitles can't be seen pag naka zoom.  ???

secondly, progressive scan pala ang aking dvd player. so i turned on the progressive scan mode of my dvd player (buti na lang component video ako, which, apparently is a requirement). the tv now identifies the resolution as 480p, instead of 480i. didn't notice much of a difference though.

i'm still figuring out how big a difference an upscaling dvd player will make in the display. if somebody can assure me na malaki, i'll buy one for xmas. together with an hdmi cable.

one other thing i learned is that my tv is actually 'HDTV plasma' but not really 'true HD'. kasi the minimum true HD resolution is 1280x720(720p) or 1366x768 (768p). My tv's resolution is 1024x768. if that's the case, is there any point in buying an HD dvd source (like an HD DVD player or a blu ray player)? wouldn't it be like buying an HD source for a crt?  ???

IMO, the difference becomes substantial on a 42"-100" screen. Not much on a 32" or lower.

So ok yan sa 42" mo >:D

Higher resolution makes a difference, depending on the size of your screen and your viewing distance. This article gives a good summary:

http://www.carltonbale.com/2006/11/1080p-does-matter/

As a rule of thumb, however, at normal viewing distances, its hard to see the difference between 720p and 1080p unless your screen is 60" diagonal or bigger.

With regard to SD vs HD:

HD has a native resolution of up to 1080i so you can output 720p to your TV and the picture quality should be very good.

If you want to emulate this with SD, you will need to de-interlace (from 480i to 480p) and then upscale the picture (480p to 720p). In this process, the quality of the output picture will depend firstly on the quality of the DVD itself (and you will find that the newer DVD's generally have better video) and secondly on the quality of the de-interlacer/scaler.

The best de-interlacer/scaler will be a dedicated video processor which can cost anywhere from PhP100,000 to PhP200,000.

I think that the next best will be a DVD player such as the Oppo (I forget the model) which is supposed to have excellent capabilities. This can cost maybe USD250.

Finally, you have the Pioneer DVD players which can cost you maybe PhP7,000.

In making a decision, the best is to actually test your set-up with a de-interlacer/upscaler and then an HD player. And when you make that decision, keep in mind that the biggest cost will not be the first cost. Its just that the HD DVD software (as compared to SD in the Philippines) typically costs 3 to 10 times more.

the free HD-DVD discs:

the HD-DVDs I purchased:
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/PICT0052.jpg)

Mini-review:

I've played all the HD-DVD discs I have (at least the first few portions, and a random sampling of some other chapters) and no problems with each. Also played R1s na regular DVDs and no problems as well.

It does take a while from "power on" to actually being able to open the tray and slide a disc in. 15 seconds or so. For some reason, I am always presented with the set-up menu (to set time, for example) everytime I turn the player on. Despite the fact that I've set the time the previous occasions.

Sound isn't as loud as regular DVDs.

Btw, I got tired of having to unplug and plug the cables from the Pioneer DV-266 to the HD-A3, so I decided to do buy an HDMI cable from CDR-King. I also got a co-axial cable (Philips brand) from Electronics Boutique in Market Market kanina. So now my set up is:

Video: TV to HD-A3 via HDMI cable; TV to Pio 266 via component video cable (from Ace);
Audio: Onkyo to HD-A3 via optical cable(cheap one from True Value); Onkyo to Pio 266  via co-axial.

to recap, i have Missions all around (M73-fronts, M7C1, M30-rears), an Onkyo 494 and now, a velo CHT-10R.

so far, i've managed to connect the power cable properly (as evidenced by blue light indicator in the velo). i have also turned on the subwoofer in the receiver (3 available options: off/mode 1(small)/mode 2(large).
also, the volume level is 50. tapos low-pass cross-over is 80.

questions:

1. mode 1 (small) or mode 2(large) ba ako dapat?
2. if i do the test tone with the onkyo 494, sound comes out of every speaker tapos slight rumbling lang sa sub. dapat ba may tunog na lumalabas for the sub?
3. what sort of other things can i experiment with?

i tried my system with Diana Krall's concert DVD. I could actually hear (or feel) that giant bass guitar thing (forgot what its called, sorry). Tapos, now that i'm typing sa laptop a few feet away from where my set up is, ramdam ko ang vibrations. Aliw!

I don't understand what "small" and "large" means sa modes 1 and 2. Do they refer to the main or satellite speakers? In other AVR's, that would be the case and you should normally set the other speakers to "small." Can you try to check the manual?

Of course, sound should come out from the sub when you play the test tone! That means that it works! But you need to set the level to be equal to the other speakers.

Normally, there will be a phase switch at the back of the sub which you can switch between 0 and 180. Switch it back and forth and check which position has the stronger output. Yun ang piliin mo.

Your low-pass filter (not crossover) should normally be set at 120 hz but the crossovers between the sub and the other speakers should be set at around 80 hz. I'm not sure lang how your AVR works but this is quite important.

@streetsmart,

mode 1 - when small with limited bass signal handling front speakers are connected
mode 2 - when large wideband front speakers are connected

I checked the specs of the M73:
frequency response - 48hz-20 khz
LF response - 43hz

Not sure what category my speakers fall under ??? based on your suggestion though, i should try mode 1 (small) first.

also, there are 2 things i'm not sure i understand:

1. there's a "low pass crossover" knob at the back, and the manual says to use this knob to select the high-frequency range at which you wish to cut off the signal to the subwoofer. its from 40hz-120hz (which is called Direct).  It says when the subwoofer direct feature is invoked, the subwoofer plays all frequencies up to 200hz.
*per your post above, is this the one i should set to 120hz?

2. there's a "high pass crossover" switch (and you can choose between 100hz and 80hz). The manual says, smaller speakers with limited low frequency output may perform better using the higher 100hz setting while large speakers with geater low frequency output may be able to handle the 80hz setting.

re "phase switch", its in the remote - with the following options: 0, 90, 180 and 270. will fiddle around with it as suggested.

i'm reading up stuff found in the internet, didn't realize that the subwoofer would be the most difficult thing to set-up (in terms of settings).  ;D

Definitely use mode 1.

Set the "low-pass crossover" to 120 hz. The main purpose of this setting is for the LFE channel, which has frequencies all the way up to 120 hz.

The "high-pass crossover" is normally used only if you send the full audio signals for the front speakers to the sub, in which case you need to filter out the higher frequencies. I assume that is not how you are connecting the sub. Your sub is connected to the "sub out" of your AVR, in which case the "high-pass crossover" is useless. In any case, you can leave it at 80 hz.

What I don't see is the crossover setting that your AVR uses. This is the point at which lower frequencies are sent to the sub, while higher frequencies go to the other speakers. This should be found somewhere in the menu of your AVR. If you can't find it, I will assume that the AVR just sets that automatically to 80 hz, which is pretty much the standard. If you find it, set it to 80 hz. This refers to the bass signals which would normally go to your other speakers (different from the LFE channel) but which are now re-directed to the sub.

Actually, may isa ka pang kulang and that is the location of the sub (which is actually very very important) but that can get pretty complicated and can take a very long time. You can read up on that at Audioholics.

Good luck! :)

@streetsmart,

i've read and re-read the manual of my Onkyo, no crossover settings on the receiver. baka luma na kasi.  ;D anyway, thanks for the tips. volume na lang ang concern ko ngayon, but i think its something i can figure out when i experiment with the sub.

@vtec3,

thanks! i figured "one time big time" purchase na lang ng sub. instead of buying entry level and buying the velo (or its equivalent) after some time.

re Onkyo and Mission, i've read from the posts here (and based on my own use) na bagay talaga sila! good for us! kasi i wasn't aware of that when i purchased either of them. parang ang nangyari, i got the Onkyo because it sounded like the middle of the Yamaha and the Denon. Yung Mission naman, within my price range. And for that I have to thank Sonny Tuazon. Wala akong ka-alam alam when I got my stuff from him. Now that I know a little more, I realized that he gave me good quality cables, and installed my equipment properly and picked good pieces to put together.

Rather than getting Avia, I suggest you get the HD-DVD version of Video Essentials. Much cheaper and apparently more accurate.

Congrats on your sub!

Just some minor new additions...purchases from my vacation here in sydney. still to be unpacked and tested:

Logitech Harmony 525 universal remote
Radioshack analog sound level meter

reviews to follow (especially on the universal remote). let's see if it will be able to control some of the older components in my system.

Initial impressions of  the Logitech Harmony 525 remote:

Set-up took about 30-45 minutes (including the software installation, putting in the name, model of each component etc).

you can pre-set the following:
watching tv
watching dvd
playing cd
listening to radio

with this option, you can do any of the above with just 1 push of a button. for watching dvds for example, the remote will turn on the tv, dvd player and the receiver by itself, and already set it up - the tv will be turned into AV option already, the receiver to DVD etc.

my gripe so far, is that i can only pick 1 dvd player in the "watching dvd" option. so, if, for example, i set it up using the pioneer, if i want to watch using my toshiba hd dvd player, there is no 1-button set up for it. i have to manually turn on each component. tamad hehe  ;D

more to come.

sorry, just saw your question. ako, i didn't realize that each speaker had a "volume" separate from the main volume. the SPL helps me set up each speaker such that sound from each reaches me at more or less the same decibel.

Looking back at this year, i got my long awaited subwoofer, a universal remote and a sound level meter. I purchased but later disposed of, my Toshiba HD-A3. So now I'm left with my trusty Pioneer DVD player, which isn't even HDMI or upscaling. I was going to buy one of dem media players, but ran out of money. Hay buhay.  ;D

Happy New Year to all, sana magka budget para sa mga gusto nating goodies  ;D ang wish ko lang this year (or next, tutal, mahaba naman pasensya ko):

1. an upscaling player (the Oppo 980 or the Toshiba XDE);
2. a media player, baka yung WD kasi mas mura :)

ayos yan maam.

bang for the buck get the xde at 7.5k landed and its confirmed that it can be region freed. wd media player is also pretty good na. paired with 500 gb, that will be 5.9k + 5k = 10.9k.

20k should do the trick!  ;D ;D ;D

A funny thing happened to my resolve to get the WD. I kept getting foiled. Something (more important, less about me and my hobby) always came up.

So last weekend, I bit the bullet and just ordered one from Richie and the nice folks at E-home, together with a 1TB WD MyBook  ;D

To follow (hopefully this weekend) - Updated pictures of my set-up, and a mini-review from one who knows next to nothing about NMTs, MKVs and what have you (WD's target market, i think).

Thinking of replacing my Mission speakers (M73, MC71, M30i) with a soundbar. Reason: space contraints when I move later this year. I won't have a dedicated HT room and I don't want to duplicate my present set up which was wires all over. Plus, the space I will save for not having floorstanders. Para sub na lang problema ko.

My best candidate so far is the Polk Audio Surroundbar. Speakers lang siya talaga, so I can use my present receiver, sub and video sources.

thoughts?

good review for the polk soundbar. but coming from a mission set-up, i think you will find noticeable difference once you shift to a soundbar (no matter how good these are). if space is a constraint, why not try sat-sub set-up, you get the space you need, still 5 speakers and hopefully, better sounding movie soundtrack than a soundbar.  :)

what's a sat-sub set-up? satellite speakers? what are the good brands for these type of speakers?

yup satellites. i think polk has some satellites. but energy and definitive technologies are the award winning ones. yun lang nga, i think a set includes the sub. ganda na sub mo maam, or just buy the set then sell the sub from the set para you can keep your velo.

kung di na practical maglagay ng speakers then this should do .....

Still can't figure out whether to keep my set up, modify it slightly to get smaller fronts or get a surroundbar. Decisions, decisions.

My experience on the soundbar so far when I had a Philips soundbar. It worked well because it was a small room. By the time I had moved it to the living room. It didn't give me the punch I was looking for.

Just my 2 cents. Check it out first. There are a lot of Soundbars out there from Philips, Teac and Polk as well.  ;)

@Onkyo606,

Dati pa kasi, mahilig na ako sa movies at music. So it was a logical progression for me to start buying HT stuff when I could afford them. Mahirap yata if wala masyadong hilig ang wife mo sa mga ganitong bagay. For example, a lot of my friends can't understand my fascination as well - mas masarap daw bumili ng bag or shoes or clothes.

Nice. Parang wifey ko, comment ng comment sa system ko. Mahilig din kasi. Ok yun pagkaka-enclose ng FS. Wag lang sana tamaan ng SARS kunsi sayang yun gastos sa enclosure. I hope madaling kalasin, relocate or convert into a rack or sumthin in the near future.

Hi Mam,

Hmm...wala naman ako napapansin na difference in sound. kasi the front portion of the enclosure is like a net lang, sound waves can easily pass through.

ang mas pansin ko, in terms of my rear speakers. the placement isn't as ideal in light of space constraints. pero puwede na din :)

Madaling alisin ang front cover. Pero yung full enclosure, kailangan ng panday kung gustong alisin :)

For future upgrades, siguro ang limitation lang is that the speakers I should buy should fit into the enclosure. Pero malaki naman allowance in terms of height. Maybe sa width ang mas limit, but front speaker sizes shouldn't vary so much.

Hi guys!

Need your advice sana. I have 2 planned upgrades this year:

1. a PS3 (hopefully by January); and
2. a receiver. I currently have an Onkyo 494. I'm thinking of getting the 508 or the 608 or any of its counterparts in competing brands.

Considering my set-up of Onkyo, Mission M72 (fronts), M7C1 (center) and M30i (rear) plus Velo CH-10, tama ba na receiver ang palitan ko? Or do I improve my speakers, especially the fronts and center?

i would get a newer receiver. onkyo din if you like the house sound. may improvement din yan. biggest effect on the sound since you already have good speakers. 608 is good but you might want to step up to the 708 so you have multeq. this will make your speakers sound better in the room along with the sub (vs 2eq which only equalizes the speakers).

ps3 - great if you play games or want to use it as an expensive bd player.

Happy new year, panyera!

Ngayon ko lang nabasa yung mga new posts mo, sister.  At any rate, pareho rin naman ang suggestion ko:

Onkyo 608 receiver + voltage regulator 2000VA.

@barrister,

Whenever I read the threads re AVRs, I get conflicting views and I end up thinking I probably don't need an AVR. Darn it.

Can I buy 2 1000 volts AVRs instead? This way, I use 2 outlets instead of just 1. Parang it's so weird to have all these devices plugged into 1 AVR and then to 1 outlet.
Title: Re: Finally 5.1!
Post by: CMac on Dec 29, 2010 at 11:00 AM
^ some 1000W AVR's, specifically the omni brand, only has 1 220v plug and 1 110v plug. their 1500w has 4 220v plugs and 1 110v plug. plug allotments are one of the crucial factors in determining avr type and model.

having separate avr's could be better but i prefer flicking a single switch to operate most of the gears i use at the same time. hdmi pass thru requires receivers to be in stand by mode, and it helps that the receiver is connected to the same avr as that of the TV's for example.

hahaha! been debating about this for the past 2 months. dedicated BD player or PS3?

ps3. not unless stand alone players cost only 3k nowadays.  ;D

It's like a spare tire on a car.  Do you need a spare tire?  (a) No, as long as you don't get a flat.  (b) Yes, just in case  ;).
You don't need a voltage regulator if your power supply is stable.  But it's better to have one in case of severe voltage spikes.

Ultimately, it depends on how expensive you gears are.  I wouldn't bother connecting an iPod dock/alarm clock to a voltage regulator, but I would if it's a Plasma TV + Blu ray + receiver.

Can I buy 2 1000 volts AVRs instead?

It's not 1000 volts, it's 1000 VA (volt-amperes).

Sometimes people say "watts" instead of "VA", because they are similar.  Watts refers to the "actual power" drawn by the appliance; "VA" refers to the "apparent power".  "VA" is used for determining specs for wire sizes and circuit breaking.  (Don't ask me to make any more sense out of that; I don't understand it either ;D)

Can I buy 2 1000 volts AVRs instead? This way, I use 2 outlets instead of just 1. Parang it's so weird to have all these devices plugged into 1 AVR and then to 1 outlet.

Sure, but that's not necessary.  It's safe to connect to 1 wall outlet as long as the voltage regulator's capacity is sufficient for all appliances connected to it.

I say use one voltage regulator so you don't unnecessarily complicate an already complicated HT system.

Here's how my set-up looked like when I woke up this morning:
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/HT%20set%20up/HT-resized.jpg)

Note that there is very little shelf space over my 6-year old receiver.

In anticipation of a receiver upgrade (hopefully by midyear), and a PS3, I decided to re-design the shelves. So now it looks like this:
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/HT%20set%20up/PICT0153.jpg)

Not as good IMHO. But more workable. Need to have to portions re-painted and polished:

Very practical. And you can opt to repartition the other 2 shelves once you've decide where to put your receiver. Sources such as BD/DVD players and NMTs doesn't require much headroom for vertical clearance unlike the new design of receivers.  ;D

Very nice, Meg.  :) :)

Suggestion lang -- Pagawa ka ng small stand for the center speaker so that it is just below the TV. That should help in the clarity of the dialogue kasi it raises the tweeter to around ear height and it provides some distance between the speaker and the shelf (otherwise, you get "boundary interference" which is not good).

My planned receiver upgrade is officially on hold  :( In the meantime, I will have to content myself with relatively more minor upgrades.

Just to recapitulate, my current set-up is as follows:

Mission M73 (fronts)
Mission M7C1 (center)
Mission M30 (rears)
Velo sub
Onkyo 494

Recently saw an M7C2 center being sold sa marketplace. Is it worth to upgrade my center speaker? Or no discernable difference?

tiles ang nasa likod ng TV.  Can't remember how much, but pricier than the Mariwasa/Lepanto models. Got it from Tile Center or is it Floor Center branch in Pasong Tamo. It's got branches everywhere.

3 years ago, I was thinking of getting a new receiver. 3 years later, still nada :)

But soon. The problem with not being updated is that I have no idea what receiver to get, and what are these latest technologies that everyone is talking about. Hahaha!

The only criteria I have is that it doesn't have to be 7.1, but has to have HDMI (which will qualify every darn receiver in the market). Looking at the Denon 1713 (since it's on sale) or the counterpart newer models from Denon and other brands like Onkyo.

Truth to tell, I think I'm more excited  about the thought of getting new fronts and center.

In fact, I already put my current fronts and center on the MP na, though I'm having second thoughts.I'm not sure kasi if there will be a discernible difference between the sound produced by my current fronts/center  versus fronts/centers in the 25-40K range (which is my budget).

just upgraded my TV (still plasma, but from Panasonic 42pv70 to Samsung's 51F5000)  8)

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/2014-02-23193703_zps056526a1.jpg) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/megdegs_photos/media/2014-02-23193703_zps056526a1.jpg.html)

My brief review of the 51F5000 after a few days of use

*PROS - I love the bigger screen; cheap; good PQ for digital cable tv and other HD sources; it's a plasma :)
*CONS - a tad more reflective than the 42pv70; for regular cable tv viewing, the PQ of the 42pv70 is better; tv speakers sound a bit shrill.

next up:

1. a stand for my center speaker, as recommended by streetsmart a few years back;
2. an AVR;
3. read up on the threads here on how to improve sound quality of gears by improving HT area;
4. and maybe, new fronts and center?  ;D

updated the first post to reflect March acquisition :) and to add a few more stories...

I think the only additions I will make in the near future will be:

1. an AVR (something I've been telling myself to get for the past 4-5 years);
2. a turntable (maybe as a project for next year). Still trying to figure out where I'd put it though;
3. an NMT (though I never did find much use for the WD TV first gen which I got a few years back).

Questions:

1. Since I got the Ixos 6003 speaker wires for my center/fronts 12 years ago, is it time to buy new wires?
2. Would it benefit my system if I got either the Auralex Gramma or Subdude for my sub? Are there cheaper counterparts? My floor is the wood-laminate variety.

1. If it's working fine, then no need to change..
2. Try rising your sub about 2-4 inches, use any stable flat form then see if you hear any difference..If you like what you hear then go and get the Auralex Gramma I raised my sub about 3 inches and i like it better than just sitting on the floor level.. It gave me better punch and eliminated rattles from doors and windows..

Here is a good topic regarding Subwoofer Risers... This is where i got my idea of rising my sub, though mine is DIY

re center speaker stand pala, are there available ones for sale? or do I also go the DIY route and just make a box-type thing na patungan?

@audiojunkie,

spent the past few days just tinkering with the set up. and playing movies and cds i haven't touched in years. always good to have new gears :)

@Oldboyracer,

been looking at your thread in the gallery, as well as the others with dedicated HT rooms. wish i could have that, but current space constraints don't allow. i'll have to put that on my bucket list because that would mean getting a new  house, or buying my neighbor's unit. no budget for either option. hahaha!

Now using a sub riser c/o Pinoydvd's erwin allen:

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/2014-03-15100233_zps514e1040.jpg) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/megdegs_photos/media/2014-03-15100233_zps514e1040.jpg.html)

Based on ear and feel test, the "boominess" which I noticed when listening to audio CDs/concert DVDs, particularly in cases where there is upright bass or double bass, has been minimized, if not totally eliminated. If only for that, I'm happy, because I was already thinking of getting a new subwoofer, and that would be way more expensive than the riser.

Ran Audyssey this morning to see if it would make a difference. My subwoofer level increased by 1-1.5db. I have no idea what that means :)

Also, I just got a center speaker stand custom made by turbokiller:

@sovrain @Courage @audiojunkie @BongerDude,

Thanks! I'm very happy with my 2014 additions/improvements. No more for this year, hopefully,  though I am getting new speaker cables (can't decide if branded or those being sold here). I am also mulling over one project which involves acoustic panels and my headboard in the bedroom, which is at the opposite end of my set up. Hahaha!

I've thought about  it some more, and it looks like I'm leaning towards the following improvements for 2015:

1. an AVR (2000 watts);
2. a CD player (Marantz or NAD, based on what I've read here so far, though I'm open to 2nd hand from the MP);
3. maybe a turntable (have not researched enough on this);
4. maybe a NMT;
5. maybe a subwoofer (2nd hand, if I find something within budget and which is an improvement over my current sub).

Thanks audiojunkie!

My resolutions for the coming months:

This year, minor acquisitions na lang, like AVR, acoustic foams for room treatment. And if I'm able to pay with my credit card points, a Pioneer blu ray player (pero dapat no cash out).

Next year:

1. NMT; and
2. DAC.

In 3 years, or if my Onkyo 494 (being used in the province) conks out, whichever comes first >:D - a 7.1 receiver.

Fingers crossed that no NAD integrated stereo amplifier gets offered in the MP between now and 2016. That will be the true test. Hahaha!

4 days later...

My resolve remains the same - no more major purchases this year (I hope)  >:D

In 2015 - an integrated amp (looking at the NAD 326BEE, Marantz PM5004 and Rega Brio R) with the end in view of buying a turntable the following year
In 2016 - a turntable (if based on today's models,  looking at the Rega RP3)

Better than the one for Marantz?  The reason I'm still including the 326bee in the mix, btw, is that it costs less than the Brio or the PM5004 even if I add cost for  separate phono stage.

@sovrain, walang papalitan eh =)  puro bibilhin lang, as I don't have any of these equipment yet.

@audiojunkie, no phono input for my 1713 =)

Yes it should be better than the Marantz phono since Rega makes turntables. And also based on reviews, rega outperforms your other choices but not in a bigger way. Let your ears decide. Haven't heard a PSB on a Rega still.  ;D

New resolution - I'm going to home audition some of the stereo integrated amps I listed (NAD and Rega, if possible), see if I can hear any difference between these and my AVR. If none, I'm buying a phono preamp + turntable instead :)

In the meantime, mindful of my moratorium on spending any more this year  on HT >:D

1. I resurrected my WD TV:

Kudos to WD, since it's basically been gathering dust since 2010 and it just up and started like the last 4 years of neglect never happened  ;D. It's working well so far, though BD menus don't work and there is no option to "chapter-select".

2. I got a Pioneer BDP-3120 and paid for it using my credit card points. I had to donate my DVD player (Pioneer DV-420) to my parents since my Pio DV-266 which they were using is now acting up. Here goes:

Cross-posting:

it's looking like i want a turntable :) - most likely a Rega RP3, maybe a Technics 1200 or RP1 if things don't work out.

My receiver is a Denon 1713, which has no phono input.

Been reading the threads here just to have an idea of what i'm getting into, if i proceed with this course of action. Baka mamaya di pala kaya ng current set up ko.

I arrived at 2 options.

Option 1 - Tipid mode option - approximate budget: 10K or less, in addition to cost of turntable

1. buy a phono preamp which should handle both MM and MC cartridges (looking at Rega or NAD);  and
2. interconnects (not the expensive ones  :D).

Option 2 - Not so tipid mode - approximate budget - 28-30K, on top of cost of turntable

1. Buy a phono pre-amp from NAD/Rega;
2. Buy a stereo amp;
3. Interconnects; and
4. Amp switcher.

Budget will be closer to 28-30K if I get a NAD 326BEE (which doesn't have a phone input) + a phono pre-amp.

If I buy the Rega Brio R or the Marantz PM6004, I can opt to use the built in phono stage. Budget will still be in the 28-30K range as the 2 are more expensive than the 326BEE. Dunno how comparable the built in phono input is though, versus a dedicated one.

Questions -

1. Will the 2 options above already make my turntable work? Or am I forgetting something?
2. Would the sub-10K models of phone pre-amps from NAD and Rega suffice, for my purposes?
3. Assuming Option 1, where would I connect the phone pre-amp to my receiver? Right now kasi, my CD player is connected to the RCA input marked as Cbl/Sat. So I just use the RCA input marked as DVD? Yung DVD/blu ray player ko kasi, connected via HDMI.

Kung ako, tipid mode muna. See if magustuhan mo talaga yun turntable. But even in tipid mode, it doesn't end there kapag turntables ang pinaguusapan. Ang daming pwedeng upgrades sa turntable. master Jen is a witness. Hehe! Then if you really love it after 5-8 months, you can dispose your phono preamp naman. May mga sellers naman dito sa PDvd ng pre-loved turntables and phono preamp.

Or you can get an integrated steteo amplifier na may phonostage na para no need to buy a seperate phono preamp.

para sa akin tipid mode option 1 muna lalo na kung satisfy kana sa current set up at sa two channel sound. :) ;), you can connect your phono to any inputs of your receiver kung may spare pa. :)

+1 and Tipid mode.. se if you will really like a TT setup... Then you go from there.. Madali na mag upgrade kapag may budget na to get what you really want...

Also try to audition some good setup from members.. Madami dyan... i heard mykels Turntable setup and it was amazing.. we compared it with his CD and Digital setup same song content and nanalo SQ wise yung turntable ang galing...

you're right, it is more prudent to go with Option 1 first. Baka nake-carried away lang ako with the thought of getting a turntable. Lalo na at ni isang plaka wala ako  :D :P

in fact, i was thinking to myself, what if i just wait until next year (my original timetable) before i go the turntable route.  nasasayangan lang ako kasi may good deal on the RP3 which is what I intend to buy anyway. Ang hirap!!!

He he he resist the Temptation..

Sit back, turn on your gears and listen.. Do some critical listening and hear what's missing, what you dont like and what you possibly need..

From there you can decide ano ba dapat pag ipunan..

Nabili ko mga gusto kong Audio gears not overnight but 2 years. Pinakinggan kong mabuti kung anong kulang, anong gusto kong tunog at anong kelangan ko... Non stop audition and comparison is the key..

@Courage,

Sadly, di ko kaya ang 2 years. Months or weeks lang. No EQ.

The only reason why I didn't change my gears for years, is because I never seriously thought of changing them. Pero late last year, I decided I want a new receiver and a new TV. After I got the money, pulled the plug on both.

Ang unplanned ko, speakers (which I decided on after maybe 2-3 weeks, and only 4 auditions) and CD player (1 home audition, and even lesser period). Kung may stocks lang si Epoy of AA ng Dali Zensor 5 last February, di na ako nakarating ng Watts Hi Fi at di ko na nabili ang B6. Hahaha.

Hahaha.

He he he.. if that's the case.. then go buy what you really want he he he... Para masaya na agad.. That would i do if i were you he he he...

hi maam, neat setup you have there!

how did you hide the cables for the tv and receiver?

hi maam, neat setup you have there!

how did you hide the cables for the tv and receiver?

There's a pipe on  (or buried inside) wall where the cables from TV to receiver will pass. Right now,  just the power cord of the TV and 2 hdmi cables.

Pros - neat, wires not visible.

Cons - hard to change cables. I have to remove TV from wall mount if I need to replace cables (for example, when I first changed from component video to hdmi or if I want to replace my current hdmi with another). I changed TVs recently, and it's a good thing the power cord is the detachable kind (e.g. Can be unplugged from TV side) because the power cord portion will be hard to fit and maneuver inside the pipe, since it already has 2 hdmi cables.

Since I couldn't decide whether to buy a turntable, an integrated amp or an AVR, I decided to get a La-Z Boy recliner instead  8). My current chair for HT use was disintegrating and I couldn't find an upholsterer who knew what to do with it :)

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/HT%20set%20up/2014-04-30152824_zpsc63e0dbd.jpg) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/megdegs_photos/media/HT%20set%20up/2014-04-30152824_zpsc63e0dbd.jpg.html)

Fabric, not leather. Slightly slimmer than most models, but not the slimmest kind (which was too expensive for me).

Mini-review: worth the money, very comfortable. The only thing I regret is that I missed the Blims promo in March which made La-Z Boys available on 0% interest for 24 months. Drat!

Since I've said no to new gears (for the time being), eto na lang pinagdiskitahan ko:

Before:

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/2014-03-03163914_zpsbd1e81f1.jpg) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/megdegs_photos/media/2014-03-03163914_zpsbd1e81f1.jpg.html)

After:

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/HT%20set%20up/2014-05-25132833_zpsdf88fe35.jpg) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/megdegs_photos/media/HT%20set%20up/2014-05-25132833_zpsdf88fe35.jpg.html)

Verdict: Parang may improvement naman though I cannot swear on it, since I have no more recollection of how things sounded before I put in the foams.  >:D

Thanks! The good (and bad) thing about a forum like ours is that you learn many more things about your set up, than you already did. Hahaha!

Right now, my fascination is with streaming music (like spotify). I think it's great because I tend to listen to the same songs and artists over and over again and it will help expose me to other artists.

I'm trying to figure out how to make Spotify play (via MacBook or phone) through my ht set up. With as few tweaks to my system as possible. Still researching.

Let's see if it will make me break my moratorium :)

Doing a home audition of both the Nuforce Air DAC (SRP Php 8,500) and the NAD DAC 1 USB wireless digital (SRP 15,500).

Initial impressions of the Nuforce Air DAC
(https://www.nuforce.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&layout=item&id=11&Itemid=1133)

Pros:

1. Very small footprint.
2. Works with both Macbook Air and desktop PC (with Windows 7 running); a breeze to install, although my PC had to download the necessary drivers. The only thing you have to do is to pick the speakers where the sound will come out.
3. No problem playing iTunes, Spotify, the works.
4. Coverage is pretty good, even if i'm in the kitchen area (about 5-7 meters away from receiver).
5. Subject to my observations below, SQ is good. (not audiophile level of course, it says it's CD quality sound. Better than via regular bluetooth)

Cons:
1. Does not work (yet) with Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Although Android compatibility is supposedly in the works.
2. As explained in my observations below, the SQ and volume level is not consistent for all platforms.
3. Only RCA output - no coax/optical or USB.

Additional observations:

If playing Spotify, the disparity in the volume level and sound quality if the Nuforce is attached to a PC versus a Macbook Air is fairly noticeable. PC wins, hands down.

If playing music stored in hard drive, using iTunes, the opposite is true. Much better to listen using Macbook versus the PC.

Not quite sure what's the reason for these. Maybe hardware? or the settings in my PC and Macbook?

And a NAD DAC 1 USB wireless coming soon (fingers crossed)

No more space in my HT cabinet for additional gears though. Unless I get those upright AV receivers from NAD (like the D3020), or a small NMT with built-in HD.  Or maybe a Brio R.

Or maybe it's a sign that I should stop buying ;D

Part 2 of my wireless DAC home audition

Initial impressions of the NAD DAC 1 Wireless USB
http://nadelectronics.com/products/digital-music/DAC-1-Wireless-USB-Digital-to-Analogue-Converter

Pros:

1. Works with both Macbook Air and desktop PC (with Windows 7 running); a much easier install for Windows than the Nuforce.
2. Works with my Samsung Note 3 (via OTG cable)!
3. Has coax out (unlike Nuforce which only has RCA);
4. No problem playing iTunes, Spotify, the works.
5. Coverage is pretty good, even if i'm in the kitchen area (about 5-7 meters away from receiver).
6. Subject to my observations below, SQ is good. (CD quality sound, like the Nuforce; better than via regular bluetooth) Also, in the Watts Hi Fi set up that we tested it with, it sounded louder and better than the Nuforce. In my home set up, the difference in volume was not as stark, but SQ is a bit better than the Nuforce.

Cons:
1. More expensive than the Nuforce Air Dac (almost double the price; but note that as of this writing, it's only US$99 at Amazon, in limited quantities and at 110v <- I think);
2. Same as the Nuforce, the SQ and volume level is not consistent for all platforms.
3. bigger footprint. The transmitter end will dangle if connected to a desktop CPU.

Additional observations:

If playing Spotify, the disparity in the volume level and sound quality if the NAD DAC 1 Wireless USB  is attached to a PC versus a Macbook Air is noticeable (but not as great as Nuforce). PC wins, hands down. Low volume level if Note 3 is the source.

Verdict - because of the compatibility with my Note 3, and the US$99 price at Amazon, I chose the NAD. But if I had to buy locally, I would have chosen the Nuforce. Can't justify paying more than 10K considering that my main purpose is just to play Spotify over my HT set up.

I decided against an office set-up with amp + bookshelf speakers. Laptop + DAC + headphone na lang, so I don't disturb others  :)

So, in keeping with my just-jump-right-in-with-minimal-audition philosophy (i.e. no EQ), I got this:

(in english, for the benefit of OBR) these items are not so expensive, just the entry level type, so "hakot" might be a bit of a misnomer.

Also, the only reason why I regularly post in this thread is because the folks here in pinoydvd, who I consider my friends (for being similarly afflicted), are the only ones who can relate to and share in my happiness at acquiring  these things. most of my other friends don't even know what a DAC is (so did I, btw, up until a few weeks ago hahaha).

Quote ko lang kasi September pa eh. If you have been bitten by the upgrade itch bug, hindi na aabutin ng next year yan. Hehe!

I auditioned this today...

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/HT%20set%20up/2014-11-27130337-1_zps036b470b.jpg) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/megdegs_photos/media/HT%20set%20up/2014-11-27130337-1_zps036b470b.jpg.html)

Ang ganda! And I mean that visually. Hahaha. I did an A-B comparison, same song played via NAD 516 BEE versus Rega RP3 regular cart. The difference in sound is actually discernible, though I cannot choose one over the other.

Hmm..revisiting my Option 1 below. Kaya kaya ng EQ ko to wait until next year?  >:D ;D

1. Buy a phono pre-amp from NAD/Rega;
2. Buy a stereo amp;
3. Interconnects; and
4. Amp switcher.

Carbon cart?

You should have tried it with the elys 2 :)

@Nelson,

Sobra! It took all my willpower to walk away from the store. Hahaha. I'm still trying to figure out where I'll put it. Medyo may space constraints na kasi. Might have to buy a separate stand later, especially if I end up buying a dedicated amp for music/stereo. Para magkakasama yung NAD + turntable + amp.

@meat_eater,

Oo nga eh. I wanted to do a comparison but didn't have time. But if I buy the RP3, it will be the one with the elys 2 cart. Unless I get other suggestions.

Newest addition (slightly used, slightly discounted Rega RP3 c/o Watts Hi Fi):

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/megdegs_photos/HT%20set%20up/2015-02-19115823_zps707e871e.jpg) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/megdegs_photos/media/HT%20set%20up/2015-02-19115823_zps707e871e.jpg.html)

I was actually eyeing the Union Jack version of the RP3, for the aesthetics, but never felt comfortable about spending the extra money just for the aesthetics.

I ended up with a used, slightly discounted gray RP3 (with Elys 2 MM cartridge) which blends in with my gray-ish set up.

I've connected it (via a Rega Fono Mini A2D) to my Denon 1713 receiver, and it's sounding great so far.

So for future purposes  :D ;D, the question is: do I put up a separate audio-only set up which means buying a stereo amp or do I just upgrade my Denon 1713 to a higher end receiver which also has musical qualities?

For Option A - audio only set up:

1. Buy an integrated amp, or separates;
2. Either use my current PSB Image B6 as audio-only speakers or buy new speakers for the set-up.

For Option B - upgrade receiver:

This is a simpler, and maybe cheaper option. I stick with my current speakers and just buy a new AVR.

**Note: updated 1st post as well, to include new additions.

I actually have that already :) got it in 2014 because I'd been thinking of getting a 326BEE since last year.

congrats on the TT! which sound do you prefer vs your digital set up? :)

I've been doing A-B comparisons lately. I only have 3 records (2 Beatles and 1 Fleetwood Mac). For the Beatles albums, I compared it to the CD I have - Beatles Number 1s. Rumours, by Fleetwood Mac, I have it in FLAC.

For the Beatles albums, I can't make a fair comparison  because the records I got are used and aren't in the best condition. For the Beatles, I always liked their later work, more than the initial batch of songs (Love Me Do etc). But playing The Beatles:1962-1966 made me appreciate the following songs which I wasn't a fan of: And I Love Her, In My Life and Girl. There really is something about the whole ritual - watching a record spin around - which draws one to the music. Siguro kasi kailangan mong bantayan since there are only 6-7 songs per side.

Yung Rumours was a nice experience. Yung FLAC version was so detailed. Grabe ang treble, the sound of the cymbals on Dreams for example. On the other hand, the LP version sounded as great as well, fuller, but not as bright. It's like listening to a Polk Audio versus a PSB speaker.

Since my turntable is hooked up to an AVR, and not a stereo amp, I use Pure Direct mode when my source is the turntable. Then Stereo when I play my FLAC files. I always like a bit of bass when I listen to music, so I sometimes switch to Stereo even with the turntable so I can have the benefit of the subwoofer.

Congrats ma'am tonedeaf...! It's really a different feeling watching the record spinning and listening to music recorded decades ago... ;)

I also got lucky to find Beatles' Abbey Road album, original pressed from u.k. 1969, still enjoy listening to it despite occasional pops and ticks.. ;D

@toy factor and Denton,

I was afraid suggestions like yours would be forthcoming. Hahaha.

I'm looking at:

1. Integrated amp, later this year (if not too expensive like the 326BEE) or early next year (if next level);
2. new AV receiver, maybe in 2017.

Once I get those, I am sure I will hear people say I should get better speakers than my B6. Or have a dedicated audio speakers.

Never ending! :)

I've lasted more than a year without buying or upgrading anything. I think this is an achievement. Hahaha. So still no integrated amp for me, nor an upgraded AV receiver.

On the negative side, I hardly used my system except to watch iFlix or youtube via chromecast or to stream Spotify using the NAD wireless. And I haven't been as active here in Pinoydvd. Hope everyone who reads this is well, and I hope to be more active in the coming days.

Photobucket decided you need to pay them especially if you will use the uploaded pics for 3rd party use such as posting to forums like pdvd... Fortunately Flickr is still free...
Better to buy same brand and model speakers as your existing for timbre matching.
As for receiver, consider the newer models with Dolby Atmos and dts:X capabilities as well as hcdp 2.2 for 4K future proofing. HTH :)

I checked with Rex of Watts Hifi what speakers I can use to get Atmos effect even if placed in front. Didn't really plan to have additional speakers in ceiling. Haha.

Excited to get Atmos and DTS:X capable receiver :)

I'm considering Marantz but familiar with the not-so-slim ones. Is this 1608 okay, even if slim? this might be better for me since I don't really have lots of shelf space.
