is it too early to do trash talking?  :)

meron kasing ambisyon ang celtics na ulitin yung tsamba championship nila last year hehe :)

go lakers! go cavs!

it will be interesting to keep tabs on the trailblazers. lots of young talented players looking to mesh. and to see whether one more year of seasoning plus the addition of james posey makes the hornets much better.

ops, wag muna magyayabang ang mga lakers fans. pj might get 10 rings, but...

...even more impressive, bill russell has 11 championship rings
(http://msnbcmedia2.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/071017/071017_Bill-Russell2_hmed_3p.hmedium.jpg)

(in other words, russell has 10 more rings than k.g., pierce, and jesus shuttlesworth will ever have.)

:)

correction: col. sanders already has 11 rings, including 2 with the knicks as player. so he's shooting for his 12th.
go phil!

NBA.com made a season and playoff simulation using NBA LIVE 09, and guess which teams made it to the Finals.
Miami and Lakers....L.A. won the championship in  6 games(if I remember it right)
Houston made it to the conference finals but was beaten by the Lakers..

Assuming that Artest keeps his head on straight throughout the season and injuries are avoided, Houston will be a legitimate contender and might give the Lakers problems in the post-season.  Artest has been very impressive so far as a Rocket both on offense and defense.

Woke up today to a huge NBA trade: Iverson's going to Detroit in exchange for Billups and McDyess!  :o  I don't know what to make of the moves made by either team.  But historically, Joe Dumars has proven that he knows what he's doing, except maybe getting Kwane Brown.  ;)

Looks like Joe dumars surprise a lot of of people just like Lakers did when they acquired Gasol.

One conclussion for me here Joe Dumars will be in the forefront once Lebron James contract expire with Cavs on 2010.

But will this new roster of Detroit be able to win the Eastern conference (A rematch of 2004 NBA finals might be possible this 2009 NBA finals LA Lakers/Detroit Piston, another payback time for my LA Lakers)

or darko, let's not forget him  :)

i think, for dumars, it's a win-now-with-iverson, win-later-with-stuckey trade. plus as darth-rye says it clears up cap space to pursue lebron in 2010 (get in line, joe).

for denver, it's let's-share-the-ball-more basketball.

for melo,it's give-me-the-f'ing-ball!

AI and Sheed's salary will come off the book next year.. that's 30M salary cap relief... if JoeD plays his cards right and we know he will, detroit can have a starting lineup of stuckey, rip, lebron, maxiel and bosh in 2011

But then again, these are Nellie's Warriors.  Every big men should have a heydey against Nellie's small ball line-up.

One thing going against this is HISTORY.  More often than not, when a franchise player gets traded, they're shipped to the opposite conference, especially so if the original team is also a contender.

Correct! Although one exception i can think was Luis Scola from Spurs to Rockets. Not just same western conference but same division as well.

Maybe Lebron or d-Wade only. Having Bosh will be too much unless they all take huge pay-cut and definitely it wont happen.

Free agency = Big Fat contracts!  $$$$$$$$

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with some of the players.  Is Scola already a franchise player? i should follow the games more.

I was thinking along the lines of

Milwaukee to Los Angeles - Jabbar
Philadelphia to Los Angeles - Chamberlain
Minnesota to Boston - Garnett
Los Angeles to Miami - Shaq

you know, players that makes instant contenders to the receiving team that would provide additional hurdle to the original team's own championship quest. of course, there are exceptions, that's why i didn't discount the possibility just pointed out the precedent.

Houston's Ron Artest came from Sacramento and I'd like to think he was the franchise player then for the Kings.

Steve Nash, although not considered Dallas' franchise player then, was shipped back to Phoenix and man did he and D'Antoni make the Suns fun to watch and a contender to boot.

Your correct voj!

Thats why i love NBA! 2009 season is barely a week old and already big time player movement made by the pistons. Other eastern team will likely follow suit.

Celtics will surely find their hands full just defending their Eastern conference title much more Their NBA title.

Vs Indiana and the game is not yet over.

I guess its a big thanks to Shaq now playing the Center position for the Suns. Amare moved to his natural power forward position and getting more comfortable with it.

Secondly, i think Indiana doesn't have a match-up for amare thats why his wreacking havoc. Lets wait for them to play Houston. Still very impressive!

I didn't see the game but maybe more of the second (at least for this particular game). Looking at the box scores Shaq only played 12 minutes so he probably didn't have a lot to do with Amare's stat line.

I am not just refering on this particular game but since shaq was traded to Suns they got a big man that can cover the center position. And Amare able to moved at power forward position which i thinks he is more comfortable rather than playing the teams center position during pre-shaq time. Just my observation.

Cant wait for them to match-up with my LA lakers (Nov.20)

Wow...Spurs being blown out at home.

In danger of being buried in an 0-3 hole of a start.

I think its a combination of 2 things. (1) other teams have catched up or are already "on" to the spurs type of play. (2) age.

The POR-HOU game was a classic!  Clutch baskets by Brandon Roy in OT, although it looks like POR should've had less than 0.8 sec. on the final possession.  I'm going to check the replay later, but I swore that, in the HOU possession before Roy's game-winner, the game clock stopped to run BEFORE Yao's jumper went in the hoop.  Home cooking for POR?  :)  But a great game nonetheless!  POR is looking good even without Oden.

EDITED:  Forgot about the foul called on Roy when Yao made the jumper.  Clock stopped when the foul was called.

Some minor upsets:

Bobcats beating the Hornets.

Heat beating the Spurs.

Bulls beating the Suns.

Spurs being at 1-4 can also be blamed on their low level intensity in defense.  Tapos na injured pa si Parker.

Perennial top 5 in opponents' PPG and FG%.

Now,  Spurs are giving up 106 PPG, #28 in the league.  Then, opponents FG% is 48%, #25 in the league.

Biggest surprise so far...

Atlanta at 4-0.    And they are doing it in defense.  They are in top 5 in both team defense stats.   #1 in points allowed, and #3 in Opp FG %.

POwerhouses Boston and LA Lakers are also in the top 5 on both categories.

Yeah, it's a very disappointing start from my Spurs. Now that Parker will be sideline for at least 2 weeks then I think they will stay at the bottom of the standing for a long time unless Ginobili and Parker will be back sooner than expected but that too wouldn't assure the Spurs that they can catch up with the younger teams though.  :)

4-0 for the Atlanta is really a surprise but it is too early to tell. Houston disappoints me too. I thought they are one of the stronger teams but 3 wins out of 5 games is a dismal performance considering how powerful their lineup is.

So far the player that really impresses me is Brandon Roy. Simpleng matinik. ;D

Thanks for the link. Was gonna watch this online Bro, but it was being shown on CS9 pala.

Shane Battier wasn't playing pala. IMHO, Battier defends Kobe better than Artest. That blowout was a surprise, seeing as the Rockets got ahead by 12 early in the first. But with Yao playing so-so and Tmac not really coming out to play, it was easy for the LAkers to overcome that deficit and take control in the latter part of the game.

Another big surprise are the Washington Wizards at 0-5.
Even if Arenas is out, they should  have won over the Nets, Bucks & the Knicks.
Their next 5 games are even tougher - Jazz, Rockets, Heat (2x) & the Hawks... Hope they won't end up 0-10!!!

If that happens.. goodbye, coach! >:( >:( >:(

Dapat si Cuban ang palitan sa Mavs....  acheche, siya pala ang owner.  ;D ;D ;D

But listen to what The Donald (Trump) had to say:
http://absolutely.fa-bulo.us/donald-trump-calls-mark-cuban-a-loser/

“Mark Cuban is a guy who . . . puts so much pressure on the players. He wants to win so much, ya know, he wants to put himself in the position of the players. He wants to be a player, I guess. And he’s not a player . . . [Cuban] probably always wanted to be a winner all his life, and if ya look like him, you can’t be a winner. So he wants to put himself in the place of the players, so what happens is, the team choked.”

“Same thing with the Mavericks. The Mavericks have a great team. They’ll never win with Mark Cuban as the owner because he is not a winner.”

Title: Re: NBA 2008-2009 Season on BTV, ESPN, Star, C/S
Post by: Battousai on Nov 13, 2008 at 12:01 AM
Donald's smoking something different for him to say Cuban's a loser. Cuban's one of the feitiest and passionate owners in the NBA or any league. He transformed the Mavs into a playoff team (the pinnacle was a Finals appearance). He really cares about his team and he's given them all he can give. It's just the players who lack effort or desire to win the ball game. If only they had Cuban's passion for the game, then they'd be winning more games this season.
Title: Re: NBA 2008-2009 Season on BTV, ESPN, Star, C/S
Post by: ruth2art on Nov 13, 2008 at 12:53 AM
Cuban should perhaps understand that the other NBA teams may have been better. This is inspite of the fact that his Mavs
had a COY winner in Avery, a legit MVP awardee in Dirk, one of the best PG that ever played the game in Kidd and
very good support in JT & Howard (an All-Star player).

Here's Cuban's description of The Donald:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20995929/

“Donald Trump is a first class idi_t,” a candid Cuban responded. “Donald Trump, you’re an idi_t.”

“The reality is, you can’t go back and say Donald Trump was successful at anything other than one thing.
Trump water, Trump magazine, Trump dolls, Trump steak, Trump vodka. When you’re so desperate to make
a dollar, you have to put your name on everything and then you have to comment on everything because
you know … you have to build everything off of denigrating somebody else.”

Passionate, indeed. ;)

Seven Things I think I think......10% of the Season Edition

1.  The Spurs will fall into medocrity this season.    Age, injury and bad luck has so far befell them.    Then they'll get lucky in the draft lottery again.
2.  Utah still can't win on the road.
3.  What a difference a coach makes in New York.    The Knicks have bought into the system provided by D'Antoni.    Says a lot about the ability of Isaiah Thomas in handling people.  Thats why Thomas develops suicidal tendencies.
4.  Its like the 80s once again.    Boston and LA Lakers will lord it over their conferences.     The Atlanta Hawks are relevant once again.   And former powerhouses like Dallas and San Antonio will fall back into the pack.
5.  Barring any team health issues, Boston and the Lakers will win more than 60 games.
6.  We will have a first time MVP this year.   Only if the Lakers wont flirt with 70 wins.

7.   Im excited this Christmas not because its Christmas.........because its Boston-LA (next day actually).

NBa coaches are covered with contracts. If a team fires a coach, then they go thru the normal legal process - usually ending in an
out-of-court settlement. Take the case of current Bobcats coach, Larry Brown. He was fired by the Pistons with still 3 years
& $21M remaining. Then he had a stint with the Knicks and got fired with still 4 years & $40M remaining.

He settled with the Pistons for $7M and $18.5M with the Knicks. $25M+ without even lifting a finger.
I guess his agent and lawyer are luckier.. :D

with larry brown, he is milking the franchises that are willing to get milked pa. kasi in terms of winning i think wala na siyang drive dun kasi he has won a title in all major tourneys sa US and the fact na he is old na rin kaya ayaw na rin ng masyadong stress :)

no lead is safe talaga. dapat they pounded the pacers til lets say mga 3 mins to go para sure win na. pero ang ginawa kasi nila eh start of the 4th period eh puro mga 2nd stringers na ang nasa loob. so nung medyo nag run na ang pacers eh they had momentum na and nung binalik ang starters eh hindi na makaya. kaya ayun, lesson learned sa kanila. they learned it the hard way (losing by 1 point, on a tip-in).

In a way, it's a "good" loss for the Lakers.  It's "good' that it came this early in the season.  It's also a loss that they should learn from and build on, especially with a couple of road games lined up.

But still...  >:( >:( >:(

Another NBA coach was fired. Sam Mitchell of the Toronto papers got his walking papers.
He was the 2007 Coach of the Year Awardee. Goes to show that getting that award doesn't give any job security.

The bigger question will be - who will be next in the firing line?

Same thing with Indiana.....the Laker 2nd unit  were buried with numerous errors.    When the first unit came back...the Wizards are already riding on a big momentum.

He stepped down as GM.  His former assistant GMs took over.   He did became a coach of the T-Wolves before, on an interim basis, going 19-12, in the final 31 games of the 2004-05 season, after Flip Saunders was fired.

as the season progresses, the Lakers are getting worse.. they're playing sloppy and playing defense with their hands.. kobe's back to his old self.. just throwing shots here and there.. if they want to take the championship away from Boston, they better get their act together.. other teams are starting to get back their rhythm.. the Spurs are back and Cleveland has won 9 straight.. they are down 17 right now in Sacramento.. they lost 1 against the Pacers and allowed Washington to come back after being down by 20.. that's 3 ugly games against teams with losing records..

I'm not convinced that a trade is the key here. They've got the necessary players already (I pray all of them stay healthy). It's all a matter of being consistent now, especially during the second half when the LAkers usually have a lead and they seem to cruise and let other teams catch up to them.

Tough loss by the Lakers to the Kings.  This is the reason why LA is not really ready yet to contend for the title.  They need to consistently play defense and not outscore opponents.

^ Agree.  They shouldn't have off-nights on defense.

A couple of trades reported today:

1.  Phoenix gets J-Rich from Charlotte, in exchange for Boris Diaw and Raja Bell.

2.  Washington gets Mike James from New Orleans and Crittenton from the Grizzlies.  New Orleans gets Antonio Daniels from Washington.  Memphis gets a first round pick.

Phoenix will be shorthanded when they visit the Lakers today.  Read that Shaq also won't be able to play for personal reasons (death of his grandma).

This latest update seems to point out that Suns GM Steve Kerr is bailing Porter out (from being fired).
Sending Raja out for J-Rich somehow deviates from their defensive mindset direction...
they want more scoring... again ???

Well, Kerr is an Academic All-American. There must be some wisdom in this move... I hope. :D

Yan ang problem when you're one of the elite teams, hehehe....laki ng expectations.

The good part despite the loss:

They are 17-3 and are 3 games ahead of the nearest pursuer in the west.  Im not worried that they will lose contender status.  Very very far from it.

The bad part:

Their vaunted bench mob has been playing pretty awful the last few games.   Too much one on one plays and bricks.   And oh, Kobe has been shooting badly.   Lots of jumpers, less driving plays.    The first time I felt that kobe is slipping....   :-\

Their defense is in transition.   The strong side trap that they used from season's start was effective when teams didnt know what to do about it.    Their D was effective early on, but teams have studied it now, and its weakness have been exposed.   Teams that can rotate the ball well from strong to weakside capitalizes with open jumpers and easy lay-ups.

Overall, Im not yet worried..PhilJax will keep them motivated enough for the regular season......I'll be pretty worried though if they go .500 in their next 4-6 games.

Read somewhere that during the start of the season, LA was holding down opponents below 100.  The last 6 or 8 games...the average shot up to more than 100.

You can't do that in this league.  Ask the Phoenix Suns even during their most successful seasons.  It may get you the best record in the regular season but it doesn't translate to post season success.

Wiggum said it best....THERE SHOULDN'T BE OFF NIGHTS ON DEFENSE.

let's talk about other teams naman pa-minsan minsan.  :)

while the lakers, cavaliers, and celtics are at the top of the heap, the next tier below them, and not too far away, are the blazers and magic.

magic are doing well, and dwight is becoming more consistent. blazers, however, have more upside as their players are younger and have not yet peaked. brandon roy may not be as dominant as lebron or kobe, but in terms of pure technical basketball skills he may have the best overall package. he's also turning out to be clutch.
interesting game between the two yesterday. portland got hit back with a game-winner 3 by hedo after blake did that same thing against the raptors.

hornets might be up there too but have had early problems. and watch out for the spurs, who some writers have called the "cockroaches of the nba" because they just won't die. td is playing as well as he ever has.

Eventualy i hope they will be able to make the right adjustment and remain on top of the Western conference.

Boston goes for win no. 17 today against Chicago, which I feel should be a cinch.  Boston's opponents will then be sub-.500 teams New York and Philadelphia (so that should be 19 straight), before their much-anticipated rematch on Christmas Day against the Lakers at Staples.  It would be really nice for the streak to end then.  :)

BTW, based on their schedule online, Star Sports will be airing this game LIVE at 6:00 a.m. next Friday!  ;D

2 straight losses for the lakers on their 4-game road trip. they get an easier outing next game against memphis, but then head to new orleans on a back-to-back the next day -- another dangerous game.

the lakers' hyped defense has become soft of late. plus i don't think i can trust a team with odom in the lineup. and i'm starting to get the same feeling about gasol. only fisher and kobe are real fighters; the rest of the roster looks soft.

beating boston on christmas day would be a good break if they can do it.

+1.
Marbury is bad luck. He is a coach's & a team's nightmare.
KG & Marbury were the best of friends during their early years with the Wolves. But the egoistic Starbury's true colors
came out...

IMO, Rondo is the Celtics present & future PG. Posey is their bigger loss and the Celtics should try to find a better
replacement for that position.

Btw, what do you think about LBJ's crab dribble? I really do think he's taking at least 3 steps! It is a sure travel if not for his All Star status.

I think not having Z and West to help out King James made it easier for the LAkers. But hey, I'll take that W any time. Hehehe.

Yeah, Lebron's crab dribble is travelling. That's one step too many no matter how much he defends his move.

yup. travelling talaga yun. they should also be strict sa mga crossovers kasi marami dun eh palming move na... basta as long as it disrupts the normal rhythm ng bounce ng ball eh violation agad...

Yep, I've noticed DWade and Tmac do the palming thing often. They take one huge lead step while lifting the ball.

Who here thinks Magic is legit? I think its gonna be shortlived until teams find a way to effectively double Dwight, trap Nelson, and defend better the perimeter.

Siguro yung sa Orlando, malalaman ang if contenders sila or pretenders once yung injuries nila eh nag pile up na and once the trade deadline lapses na kasi for sure yung mga teams gunning for playoff slots will be looking to upgrade their lineups ng mabilisan.

Orlando was coooooold. They rely too much on 3s, modern day Phoenix with inside presence. Perhaps Porter could copy a thing or two.

I haven't checked up on the All-Star line-up, but, I'm curious if Shaq will be on the West coz it will mean Shaq and Kobe playing together on the same squad. Would be great to hype that up if Shaq is part of the West team. Oh...and to make the reunion complete, Phil will also be the coach. Wow!

My picks for this year's All-Star reserves:  :)

West:

G - Brandon Roy!
G - Deron Williams (or should this be Chauncey?)
F - Kevin Durant
F - Dirk Nowitzki
C  - Shaquille O'Neal
Wild Card - Steve Nash (for the Phoenix fans)
WC - Al Jefferson

East:

G - Devin Harris
G - Andre Iguodala
F - Danny Granger
F - Paul Pierce
C  - Chris Bosh
WC - Joe Johnson
WC - Jameer Nelson

I think Shaq will be a shoo-in.  So yup - it'll be a treat to see him play alongside Kobe.  Kobe will probably think twice before passing to Shaq.  :D

the true test of the Lakers is still to come -- lots of road games.

here's a breakdown of home games and road games left, for the top 4 teams:

For LA: 15 home games and 24 road games.
For Boston: 17 home games and 19 road games.
For Cavs: 21 home games and 19 road games.
For Magic: 21 home games and 18 road games.

time for mitch kupchak to start calling other GMs again for a possible trade deal and keep their fingers crossed that another gimme (like the gasol trade) will happen again. i suggest that they try to get Biedrins from the warriors para may strong rebounder sila and nakaka score ng paunti unti. or they can try to get okur from the jazz.

Ok lang yan.   Injuries are part of the game.  If the Lakers are going to be Champs again...they have to rise amid adversities like this.   Gasol and Odom with fillers like Powell and Mihm is still formidable.

I just hope that the timetable is right, so Bynum can return somewhere in the 2nd round of the play-offs.   That is if they are still alive by the then.   That said, Im gonna treat it like Bynum is already out for the season.

Kobe just dropped 61 pts. against the Knicks.  ;D  Looks like we should expect more monster games from him now that Bynum's out (and for opposing defenses to adjust accordingly).

I think (hope) LA will handle Bynum's absence better this year.  But they will obviously have problems against teams with powerful frontcourts.  :(  I read that his injury doesn't require surgery, so perhaps that's a good thing - easier to rehab?

It aint that bad.....Bynum's impact will be missed.  But I would prefer that the other Lakers overachieve, and the other teams underestimating them because of the injury.

Without Bynum, the Lakers are too soft (Gasol) in the middle.  Right now they are winning by outscoring opponents.  When the playoffs get underway, outgunning other teams might not be enough to get LA over the hump.

I recently had surgery for my left knee (ACL) and estimated timetable ng return ko to basketball is 6 months (june 2009).

kay bynum ang naging decision nila siguro FOR NOW is to have him go to rehab (leg strengthening exercises) only to have him moving properly na ulit and baka ang plan nila is offseason surgery. siguro ang iniisip nila is "an 80% bynum by playoffs is better than no bynum at all" tsaka depende pa rin sa severity ng injury niya yun. basta if bynum is back by playoffs sana he can get his groove back agad or else masisira ang chemistry ng team sa pagdating niya ulit sa rotation.

What a classic!  A redemption of sorts for the Lakers - winning on Boston's floor after last year's Game 6 rout, without Bynum, in the second game of a back-to-back, and despite a 50%+ FT shooting clip!  ;D  These teams really have to meet again in the Finals.

Couldn't understand why Boston kept going to Big Baby down the stretch, both in regulation and in OT.  ???

wow odom!
never thought i'd use those two words together.

as i'm a fan of both teams, lakers and cavs, this was interesting for me. philjax has done an outstanding coaching job against the cavs this year. he's put his bigs where they can do most damage, dialed in the defense against the cavs' high pick-and-roll with lebron, spread the floor to beat rotations.

the way they're configured now, the cavs won't have a chance against the lakers should they meet in the finals. and we already know that the celtics were swept by the lakes too.

hope odom and gasol don't disappear in the playoffs.

great teams win on the road. yan talaga ang true test. :)

Then, the great team/s are in the west...since, most, if not all, of the Lakers and the rest of the Western Conference 'Nine''s remaining road games are against Western Conference teams...while, the East's big three's (Boston, Cleveland and Orlando) remaining road games are against Eastern Conference teams...

The LA Lakers (the streak-breakers) were 6-0 during their 6-game road trip, including 2 streak-breaking wins -- Boston's 12 consecutive wins and Cleveland's 23 consecutive home wins...

The Spurs (they're 'Spurs Lite' no more) defeated Boston, the C's now have 2 consecutive home losses...the Spurs are currently 2-1 in their 8-game road trip...the C's 4 home losses, all are against Western Conference teams...

The C's will now embark on a 6-game West Coast trip, includes 5 games against the Western Conference 'Nine' -- New Orleans-Dallas-Utah-Phoenix-Denver-LA Clippers...that will leave the C's with only 1 road game against the Western Conference 'Nine', a road game against San Antonio on March 20...

But would Amare accept a supporting role behind Lebron and because he is the point guard....Mo Williams.  Option number 3 will not be acceptable to Amare's ego.  Playing behind Shaq, he already made tantrums.  What more behind a bigger star in Lebron.

Behind Shaq meaning the Suns plays revolved around Shaq not him.  Even though when you view the stats, he is still their leading scorer, most FGs attempted, etc....the whole Suns offensive philosophy centered on Shaq.  He wants it to be on him.  He wants to be the "main man".

The Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award will be presented at the conclusion of The Finals. Select writers and broadcasters who cover the series will determine the MVP.

The 1969 Finals between the Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers was the first time a Most Valuable Player trophy was awarded, with the Lakers' Jerry West the first recipient -- the first and only time the MVP Award has gone to a member of the losing team.

about amare being traded....i think the suns concern is their $$$, they want to trade stoudemire's contract for a player with expiring contract...para makatipid, same as Charlie Villanueva and Tyson Chandler...because rumors says that NBA team owners are also affected by the global financial crisis...some are nalugi na ng millions of dollar...

Anyone watched the Slam Dunk contest? I thought it was bad. The best dunk I've seen was Rudy's, from a feed from Pau.

i'm with you on this. if only pau had just gotten the pass right the first time. that was even more spectacular than iguodala's similar dunk from a previous contest.

Rudy's first was impressive too. Behind the back, off the rim. Dwight got 50 for a so-so dunk. I read a lot about this contest being rigged to be a Superman-Krypto-Nate (or lil lex) show.

suns firing porter might mean that they might keep amare after all and go back to a faster game. now they're reportedly  shopping around the big cactus.

well, a trade that actually happened was tyson chandler to the thunder. that won't make chris paul a very happy camper.

+1
I believe that title was last owned by Grant Hill. ;D
On the same note, there must be some "faith" healers in the Suns organization. :D
Look at the amazing recovery of Amare. Hill now is on his 2nd longest playing season.
And Shaq seems to be getting a second wind.
Maybe T-mac should try those doctors for a change. ;)

SOURCES: GOODEN TO JOIN SPURS

Barring an unforeseen snag, Drew Gooden will be joining the San Antonio Spurs later this week, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday that Gooden -- waived Sunday by the Sacramento Kings before the midnight deadline to be eligibile to play in the playoffs with another team -- has made known his intent to sign with San Antonio after clearing waivers Wednesday.

Gooden was pursued by several playoff-bound teams this week, including San Antonio's divisional rivals in Dallas and New Orleans.

But the Spurs have nearly $1.5 million remaining from their mid-level salary-cap exception to offer Gooden for the rest of the season, as well as a shot at title contention.

The league-wide expectation since Sunday, when Gooden finalized a buyout with the Kings and Joe Smith secured his release from the Oklahoma City Thunder, has been Smith signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers this week and Gooden joining the Spurs.

The Arizona Republic reported on its Web site Tuesday that the Phoenix Suns are on the verge of signing Stromile Swift, who will also clear waivers Wednesday after completing a buyout with the New Jersey Nets.

The Spurs will be thrilled to win the race for Gooden, given the production he potentially offers at such a low price.

At the trade deadline, San Antonio thought it was close to acquiring center Marcus Camby from the Los Angeles Clippers, but such a move would have put the four-time champions into luxury-tax territory while also costing them prized rookie George Hill and two title-tested veterans in Bruce Bowen and Fabricio Oberto. Signing Gooden for just under $1.5 million does not pitch the Spurs past the league's $71.2 million tax line.

The primary concern with Gooden is his health. He averaged 13.1 points and 8.6 rebounds in 31 games with Chicago and posted 12 points and 13 rebounds in his only game with Sacramento, but the 27-year-old has been plagued by a stubborn groin injury that could limit his ability to help the Spurs immediately.
