HT Experts,

I am deciding now between Denon 1803 and Marantz 4300,  as I can see in this thread lamang and MArantz in terms of price and features (correct me if I'm wrong)

I also see in this thread na lamang ang mission speakers.  Since I am very new to HT, can you advice me what models of mission speakers to get, where and price?

Also I noticed yun Marantz 6.1 siya.  Di dapat 6 speaker system sya?

Thanks :-[

Hi htboy, welcome to PinoyDVD,

I wont say lamang ang Marantz. In terms of price the Denon would come out more expensive because it is a higher model. Try comparing the price to a 1403 or 1603. Regarding the features, it depends on what do you need. In my case I need component connection so the Marantz was never my choice. Im not saying Marantz is bad but it does not have some features that I need. Both can decode 6.1 so you will need six set of speakers plus a subwoofer. I also have tried both receivers driving Mission and both are good. How about B&W speakers? It is a good match to both receivers also.

I think he is referring to the price when he means "lamang" cause its cheaper...

SR4300 as a pre-amp
« Reply #184 on: May 28, 2003 at 12:41 PM »
I'm writing this little review for the benifit of those who're buying the SR4300 primarily as a pre-amp as the various AV forums I've visited (including PinoyDVD) have little to no discussion on it.

Complaints

My main complaint is that the SR4300 doesn't come with XLR female sockets but with banana plugs/RCA. This made connecting the AVR to the power amps a bit cumbersome. Imagine you'd have to buy composite cables for all 7 pre-amp outs & buying 7 banana to XLR adaptors so you can connect it to the power amps. Did I mention that finding banana to XLR adaptors are hell? I had to go to Malate just find em!

Another complaint is that the manual doesn't tackle the use of the pre-amp outs of the AVR in full. It only tells you where to plug in the power amp too and doesn't mention that once connected your AVR controls the volume of the power amps & not to freak out if you don't hear anything. The Troubleshooting section of the manual has little to say except that if I can't hear anything my power amps are defective!

Heck I know my power amps aren't defective as we've been using it in concerts so we thought the SR4300 was defective til we jacked up the volume to -30db. At first we were hesitant to break the -40db barrier in fear of damaging the power amps & speakers connected to it.

Once you've passed the installation pains the thing rocks! We played Saving Private Ryan and passers by on the street came in to watch. Watching movies is really a community experience. :)

If you wan't a low costing DD-EX/DTS-ES/DPL2 pre-amp then this is your AVR.

I'll post the setup I've used for this pre-amp once the power to the venue is finished.

From what I remember we were using Crown & Crest power amps. I'll post the exact make & model number when I go back to the province. :)

The power amps am using are from Crown, JBL & Crest Audio (not the toothpaste) for pro installations. I'm trying to create a multipurpose room for concerts, raves, production launches, etc. Seeming there's all this equipment & a lot of down time I was thinking of including a "home" theater as well. That's why I chose the SR4300 cause it got pre-amp outs. We even got to go 6.2 with a pair of Behringer subs & JBL SR-X subs.

I had a lot of fun setting it up. :) Heck sa sobrang fun I didn't want to leave... :)

Once the place has been properly setup I'll post the pics & equipment spec. :)

dracula,

OK lang yan. Now enjoy mo muna yung 2 channel experience then mas lalo mong maaapreciate pag mag add ka na ng other channels.

Ako nga nun dati 5 channel mission and wala pang sub nag enjoy ako and after mag add ako ng sub, it was a whole new experience talaga specially pag maganda ang sound effects ng movie.

Your on the right path.... slowly but surely. ang galing ng Marantz + Mission combo sa music (lalo na pag Norah Jones and Charlotte Church)

Based from their website, you need to get the SR7300 if you want component video switching, but I dont think your budget would fit.

Marantz 530 has component video ins/out. Kaso hindi sya switching. Kung isa lang ang Video Receiver mo na may component video out, then this is not an issue.

Philander,

Are you sure the Marantz 5300 has component input? Its not in the web and when I was auditioning the unit from Hyperaudio I did not see any component input. That is why I removed Marantz from my list. Even the 6300 does not have component input.

Yup sir levi is right, no component ins/outs on the 4300,5300 and 6300. I know coz i auditioned this three in shangri la and Megamall when i was still looking for a replacement on my Yammy. :)

Ooops, my Bad  :P.

You are both right.

I just based my post regarding Cnet's Review on Marantz SR5300 at its specifications:
http://electronics.cnet.com/electronics/0-6342373-1317-21110571.html?tag=subnav

Sorry about this. Sorry for the confusion.

what is the significance of using the component video in receiver?  Is it really important on choosing a receiver?

I will go to Marantz if I hear a convincing response.

thanks.!

If you have two or more video players that has component video out, then you have the conveniency to switch to component video without manually connecting the other player's component video out of your player to the component video ins of Display Monitor.

Meaning you will connect the component video out of your video player/s to the receiver first, then the receiver will automatically output the video (and the audio) corresponds to your selected Input (you will be the one to set it up or you preset it).

But if you only have one player with component video out, then this is not an issue beacuse you can direct the connection to your TV.

To add more, if your Video reciever (Plasma, HDTV, Conventional/Flat TV, etc) that has more than 1 component video in, you may just switch your Display's input to the corresponding component video input.

importance of component video availability in AVR is dependent on what TV you have and what you want to do as a matter of setup.

If you have multiple sources of component vide (say multiple DVD players, etc etc), then you can hook this to your AVR to do the switching punta sa TV mo.

However, if your TV hs multiple component video input, you can have your tv make the switching between different sources. in fact, this is more recommended because you minimize the loss of your component video signal attributed to the AVR handling.

So from the above you can now determine if at all the component video in an AVR is important or not. if you only have 1 source and your TV has component video, why in a world would you want to have the DVD component video pass to AVR than direct to your TV?
