I'm writing this little review for the benifit of those who're buying the SR4300 primarily as a pre-amp as the various AV forums I've visited (including PinoyDVD) have little to no discussion on it.
ComplaintsMy main complaint is that the SR4300 doesn't come with XLR female sockets but with banana plugs/RCA. This made connecting the AVR to the power amps a bit cumbersome. Imagine you'd have to buy composite cables for all 7 pre-amp outs & buying 7 banana to XLR adaptors so you can connect it to the power amps. Did I mention that finding banana to XLR adaptors are hell? I had to go to Malate just find em!
Another complaint is that the manual doesn't tackle the use of the pre-amp outs of the AVR in full. It only tells you where to plug in the power amp too and doesn't mention that once connected your AVR controls the volume of the power amps & not to freak out if you don't hear anything. The Troubleshooting section of the manual has little to say except that if I can't hear anything my power amps are defective!
Heck I know my power amps aren't defective as we've been using it in concerts so we thought the SR4300 was defective til we jacked up the volume to -30db. At first we were hesitant to break the -40db barrier in fear of damaging the power amps & speakers connected to it.
Once you've passed the installation pains the thing rocks! We played Saving Private Ryan and passers by on the street came in to watch. Watching movies is really a community experience.
If you wan't a low costing DD-EX/DTS-ES/DPL2 pre-amp then this is your AVR.
I'll post the setup I've used for this pre-amp once the power to the venue is finished.
