FROM IGN:
Lots of happenings surrounding The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King since its Oscar sweep. For starters, it will be returning (sorry) to more than 2,000 theaters next weekend for one last attempt to boost the box office take, which already stands at $364.1 million domestically.
Now for the bigger news. There was a party thrown by TheOneRing.net and the man of the hour Peter Jackson was there. The Digital Bits was the first to carry this blurb regarding the extended edition and a high-definition transfer of the movies.
"I'm sure most of you have heard me blabbing off in the past few weeks but we've just finished the extended cut of the DVD. I finished the edit before I came over here - these poor bastards at Weta have got another 350 effects shots to do! They're well on the way. Elijah's seen the extended cut. New Line have announced some box set that's supposed to be coming out which I didn't know anything about. When I've done King Kong I'd like to do a proper box set and we've got a whole bunch of material - not of the movie but we've got a whole lot of bloopers out there! When King Kong's out the way I'd like to do a really high definition version with the best possible picture quality."
Now, this is interesting because New Line hasn't announced any box set. Last week we had a story that first ran on DVDAnswers, a U.K.-based site, of an upcoming toy faire in Europe where New Line made mention of a LotR box set for 2005. But at this point we haven't heard any word. New Line has an announcement planned for Monday regarding RotK, and who knows, we may get more information on a box set.
His timing on a high definition transfer for the films would be perfect. King Kong isn't due until 2005, so figure with post-filming work, such as DVD prep, by the time he can turn his sights on a high-def LotR release it would be 2006, which is when HD-DVD should be hitting the market. Now that would be the tail wagging the dog for HD-DVD.
Now for the not so good news. The rumor mill regarding the RotK DVD releases has been the two-disc release in May and the extended edition around August. Well, scratch that. Here's a Jackson comment from the OneRing party regarding a prank played on Elijah Wood.
"…It's just something that we are going to put on the DVD in November for the extended Return of the King…"
So it looks like no early release for RotK.
